My first instinct would be to help the little guy but that would be like putting your hand down the garbage disposal.

I love cats. I adore cats. I think it's funny as hell when a normally lithe and coordinated animal turns spastic.

One of mine fell twice last night, once coming in the window and then off of the table he jumped onto. The look of disapproval on his face when I laughed at him was perfect.

They will also groom right after a unfortunate fall to be like "I'm cool, that was planned" and not appear weak.

[–]sulimanthegreat 48 points49 points ago

Yeah. They're all I did that on purpose.

[–][deleted] 23 points24 points ago

Then they go behind the couch and mutter to themselves "Meow, fuckin' meow..."

You were downvoted, but I'm pretty sure you're right. Cats usually groom when they're feeling uneasy or are uncertain.

Or they just kind of act like they're doing something else. Like walking around or freezing and making sure no one saw. "I know what I'm doing."

My former roommate was a taxidermist, and once he put a crouching coyote in the upstairs hallway. You would come face to face with it as you rounded the corner near the top of the stairs. After scaring the crap out of all the roommates (one actually fell backwards down the stairs), I wondered how the cat would react, so I carried her up the stairs. purr...purr....TASMANIAN DEVIL SLASHING ME TO RIBBONS

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My first instinct is to disbelieve you, but if I was a taxidermist I would do this shit to my roommates all the time. How did you meet such a guy and end up living with him? I don't quite see the allure of taxidermy or how you get into that business...

oh god there is a funny story about that. My dad was unloading the trunk of our saturn. It has a bike rack on the back so it is very heavy and will sometimes slam itself shut. my cat who likes to sleep on the roof of the car slid down and got his paw stuck in the trunk. (when he hit it it shut). anyways my dads first instinct was to drop the keys and try to free the cat. my dad ended up having the cat bite through his had some odd 30 times. not just bites. you could see through these holes in his hand. i tried helping my dad when i only got bit once through my left index finger. very crazy day. oh and the cat was completely fine.

[–]twinsea 92 points93 points ago

When a cat loses control it can go absolutely ballistic. Our cats routinely get themselves into some sort of trouble. We have to make sure we don't put plastic grocery bags on the floor because they would occasionally put their head through the bag loop and then freak out when the grocery bag would start following them. They would just start running, crashing into walls, knocking over everything and spreading our groceries all over the house trying to get away from the grocery bag that they were inadvertently pulling behind them.

[–]ojoil 63 points64 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Plus, they absolutely can not resist sticking their heads through the handle.

[–]twinsea 26 points27 points ago*

You would think they would learn after the first time. My kids put stuff on them constantly and they purr throughout, yet a plastic bag -- armageddon.

[–]agnesthecat 5 points6 points ago

This really is an evolutionary defect of cats. Ours tried to get a treat out of a paper bag and in the ensuing panic, somehow managed to tear the bag in half. We captured one half and threw it away. At 3am that night, she found the other half. There is nothing worse than waking up to a terrified cat dragging half a bag through an apartment as she does laps at 15mph.

Our old cat got so freaked out when she did that. Whenever someone came home from the shops after that, she would run and hide :(

I have a kitten that does the same thing if anything gets stuck to her fur, like a piece of tape or one of those long stringy fibers from a banana. The worst is long plastic strips from packaging that hold a strong static charge. When it happens she almost seems to shrink, almost as if she's trying to escape by sinking through the floor. Then she starts running and eventually makes it to her favorite hiding spot. It's really funny for the first little bit, but she won't leave her hiding spot until you find her and manage to remove whatever is stuck to her.

Many cats prefer running water. You might want to try a cat fountain.

[–]mooshicat 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My cats like running water, so we tried this. but they refused to put their faces into it. So by using their paws to drink, they turned it into a whirlpool for all of the dust from the floor (even despite the filter).

[–]rjcarr 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My cat was losing weight and looking sick and then he started doing this. There would be a water bowl next to the shower and he would still get in the tub and lick all the walls dry. We brought him to the vet and he had a serious GI infection ... needed a feeding tube and everything (not pleasant).

Once he got better her never went in the tub again. He's been healthy for about 3 years now. Very strange.

tl;dr: If your cat just started doing this you might want to get him checked out.

[–]avamarie 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My cat will call me from the sink (bathroom or kitchen) to turn it on. He hates standing water. He'll even drink from a hosepipe. He's not so bad if I have a separate water dish for the cats that the dog can't reach, but not much.

A cat fountain has saved me quite a bit of yowling through the years.

[–]walkingjuxtaposition 0 points1 point ago

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Our cats did this when they were young, but they stopped for some reason.

[–]avamarie 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I had one that would take the drip (well, more of a slow stream) from the tap, push his paw up against it, and spray the entire freaking bathroom.

He did this over and over and over and over before we were able to fix the leak. Even so, on nights when it would get super cold and we'd leave the water running, we'd have to lock him up or the kitchen and bathroom would be soaked.

[–]LittleNibbler 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

One of mine loves the tub too. He will hide in there when we have company and wait for some unsuspecting person to come in and shut the door. He then leaps from behind the shower curtains scaring the person to death. He also likes to come in the bathroom when I'm soaking in the tub to dangle his front paws in the bubble bath.

My grandparents have an indoor pool in a solarium-looking-thing made out of mason block. They built it back in the '70s, adjacent to the auto shop. They'll leave the doors open in the summer because otherwise it gets up to over 130 degrees. This is by design - the pool is unheated, but has a layer of thick black plastic over it (pretty sure it's just the plastic you use to line rock gardens) that we raise via a block and tackle system.

One time we were rebuilding a transmission and a cat wandered in. We're not quite sure what he saw out there in that expanse of black plastic, but he leaped onto it -

...and landed, completely without expecting it, in the middle of what was essentially a 20' x 50' waterbed.

I really wish I had video of that cat. It probably took him ten minutes to make it back to terra firma. Don't think he ever came back.

[–]Stop_Sign 9 points10 points ago

Once I was informed that I would have no running water for the day due to maintenance being done. So I filled the bathtub the night prior so there would be water to use. My poor cat had a habit of running and jumping in the tub. I failed to take that into consideration and it was fairly traumatic for him. Now he reacts in a similar fashion as this cat despite the tub being dry.

She was like, you might not see it but "I guarantee there is water in that tub".

Hahahaha. Now this is what I call an overreaction to a nonexistent threat. This little pussy
cat turns into a cloud of fists & feet cartoonists draw to depict fights. Is always staying dry
the lifelong goal of most housecats?

What is it about cats and water?

[–]WorkingAtWork 25 points26 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Most cat owners don't bother to introduce large bodies of water to their cats when they are still young. Instead, they go "LOL BATH TIEM!!", put the cat in the tub, and start hosing it down, which is fucking traumatic. Catch a kitten when it's playful and curious, and slowly introduce it to water (playing in a puddle, getting its feet wet, etc), and don't just dump the cat in the tub come bath time, and most cats will adjust accordingly over time.

Everyone I know with cats has done this, and all of those cats are like "hey cool, it's bath time. I'mma sit here and play in the water while you pet the crap out of me, then brush me."

So yeah, i'd put my money on it being a case of people not knowing how to properly raise pets, not so much an inherent trait of the cat.

I adopted my cat as a full grown kitty...at least 5, possibly around 10 years old. One day she messed up her litter box real bad, walked all around in it, and needed a bath....oh how I feared what was about to happen.

So I filled the tub a small amount, put her in, and there was pretty much no resistance as she took her bath like a champ. I love my cat. Thanks, whoever owned my cat before me!

It's all in the upbringing. Our cats will swim with us in lakes and chill in the shower. They even will chase and attach the stream of water from the hose. We just raised them around water from the day we got them home.

[–]Vicinus 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Can someone actually explain this?
Our cats also feared our bath tube, and i could not see a reason why. The few occasions they met the tube they, as a far as i remember, did not even see it filled with water and yet hated it. They were curious and all but ran away like shit. One of our cats fell into it and was freaking out like the cat in the gif.

Our cat pees himself when we put him in the bathtub. Sometimes he poops too. He really, really hates water and baths. Water doesn't even have to be running or present, sometime you just can carry him near it and he'll pee. Kind of sucks since every time we take him in the car he does those things too...

My cat used to go in the tub ALL THE TIME, coz I never use it anyways and it's always dry.

But my grandma came over for Christmas and would take warm baths before going to bed. She'd forget to drain the water out.

So there he goes and jumps in while I'm blow drying my hair and freaks the hell out, splashing water everywhere. Poor baby, now he's scared whenever I'm carrying him around near the tub. He's traumatized and won't go back in, even if it's dry.

[–]Intel81994 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There is a psychological explanation for this. This cat may have been previously exposed to a great amount of water (bath time) involuntarily, causing it to exhibit fear. Now I don't know if cats inherently are predisposed to hate water or what, but either way this fear of the bathtub is a conditioned response: when the cat was exposed to the water in the BATH TUB before and exhibited fear, it saw that the tub and the water always went hand in hand and so associated the bathtub (conditioned stimulus) with the water (unconditioned stimulus) to create a conditioned response of fear in the future with any subsequent interactions with the bathtub. Its brain associates the presence of the bathtub with the presence of a large quantity of water which triggered fear before, so put simply it develops a phobia of the bathtub.

Wow, that is a total freakout by that cat.

My cat's the opposite, after I shower he sits in the bathtub staring at the tub faucet.

I actually have to close the door to keep my cats out of the tub. For some reason they like the water. And we have a big bowl of water in the kitchen. Maybe they don't like drinking out of the same place as the dogs.

Immediately after getting out, he sat in the middle of the bathroom floor, looked indignant (or stoic) and began to clean his paws, as if saying "It's cool guys, I got this."
