Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Part of me thinks that's beautiful. The other part is thinking about the snow stage on Mario Kart 64.

Reminds me more of the one with the snowmen.

At first glance, I thought there was a gigantic sperm whale swimming through that canyon.

Beautiful, but imagine how fucking terrifying that must be to see it in person. Massive sheer walls of ice leading down into a dark river of freezing cold water with no escape?

FUCK. THAT. SHIT.

Greenland is full of ice. Iceland is very nice.

Things we learn from Mighty Ducks 2

[–]Umsakis 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Iceland IS very nice, but it does have a fair bit of ice during the winter. Greenland, on the other hand, is definitely mislabelled.

[–]insickness 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In grade school, I asked my teacher why this is. She said that Vikings discovered Iceland and came back to tell others about their finding, no one wanted to go because it sounded like a crap place filled with ice. So when they found Greenland, they named it that way so their finding would seem better.

I should probably read up on the history, but it's good dinner table conversation either way.

Where in Greenland is that? I am flying to Thule in a few days and I am looking for some good areas to explore.

[–]ballybough 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why are you going to the most remote USAF base? I've been on business a couple of times. There really isn't much to do, especially during winter. Just do what everyone else does there and drink at the Top of the World club.

[–]exNihlio 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I got a job with Harris. They have the contract from the Air Force for the operation of the Air Force Satellite Control Network.

[–]ballybough 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sweet. It's fun to go at least once just to say you were so close to the top of the world. It's almost impossible to go outside of the base during winter. Too cold and its perpetually dark. During the summer you can get some pretty breath-taking photos.

[–]Unythios 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nice I work for Harris as well. What branch are you in? And where from?

[–]exNihlio 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

IT Department. I just got the job a few weeks ago after separating from the Air Force in January. I am in SLC, Utah right now.

[–]Unythios 0 points1 point ago

Awesome. I'm in Florida trying to get into IT.

How is there water in all that ice?

[–]travelinghobbit 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It might be something like this? I really have no idea about the science of it, but it looks like it's the same idea.

[–]djdementia 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Possibly geological activity like an underground hot spring. It appears that the dark area may be because the ice is being melted from below.

[–]pics-or-didnt-happen 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's a melt pool. Eventually the pool will melt deep enough to meet with a fissure in the ice and then it will become a maelstrom.

Also, because the water is darker than the ice, it therefore reflects less sunlight, absorbing more heat and increasing the melt rate of the surrounding ice.

I'm imagining a swarm of hungry sharp teethed leopard seals circling in the dark.

[–]serpentjaguar 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Dude, leopard seals live on the opposite end of the planet. The Arctic and Antarctic; learn the difference. One has cute penguins and evil seals, the other has cute seals and evil bears.

I'm still having nightmare thoughts about what's in that hole.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Meh, there's still room for my optimism. "Half melted? Naaaah, looks like it's half icecapped to me!"

You thought airplanes used regular water with some additive. Instead they import bottled Blu-Flush from Greenland.

That's a fairly big sign of what's to come. When these land-based glaciers do end up melting and falling into the oceans, there will be a lot of flooding, disease and famine.

On the other hand, it's quite pretty. I went to Greenland when I was in college.

We're starting to see so many of these "Meanwhile, in...." posts on the front page of r/pics. There is http://www.reddit.com/r/meanwhilein, although it has no active posts. Maybe it should be used?

WHAT THE FUCK?!?!?!...Greenland is all ICE?!

[–]triggerfish1 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, it's not, and that's what bad about it. When an iceberg melts, the water level won't rise a bit. When ice on land melts, it will lead to higher water levels...
