Yeah, in some cases it's baloney, but I think it's legitimate in this case. I look at it as similar to anorexia. I know guys that are pumped to hell, and for no good reason. The risks don't matter to them. Health risks aside, they're not pro-athletes, and they're jamming themselves through of hormones that are highly illegal. I haven't met many women that want anything beyond a 'statue of David' physique in musculature. This is all my opinion based on limited information and personal experience.

Ok, I get that steroids can give you massive muscles. But do they even work? I mean when I go the gym I see guys on a regular basis that are pretty large and you can tell they've worked very hard to achieve their size and they are often doing the same workout I do with much heavier weights. But were he to get to the same size using steroids, would he actually be getting much stronger or do the drugs just make you look stronger?

Steroids give you two benefits when working out: 1) faster recovery & 2) increased strength for the muscle size. The increased testosterone gives the muscle more explosive energy and it doesn't get tired as quickly, while also increasing the rate at which the muscles can heal/grow, however once you go off of the juice people tend to retain the size but be weaker than they would have been by attaining the gains naturally.

A bodybuilder's primary concern is not strength and many bodybuilders don't care about strength at all. Size doesn't necessarily equal strength. The sarcoplasmic hypertrophy that makes up the bulk of a bodybuilders size transfers more to muscle endurance than strength.

Top powerlifters, strongmen, and (olympic) weightlifters use steroids to get stronger just like bodybuilders use them to get bigger.

Steroids allow you to train harder and more often. The end result depends on how you train.

I've got a pretty good but unavailable study and a bodybuildingforums post. Apparently doing straight testosterone is not advisable, but several other drugs have been formulated to stimulate the growth of strong tendons along with muscles.

Doesn't negate the liver damage, increased irritability, and gender bending properties of steroids, however.

When used properly, steroids are only used when an already EXTREMELY fit person has hit a plateau, or reached their biological maximum. Then the 'roids come in. And YES. they do work, and make you stronger, and bigger. And can totally ruin your body if you don't use them right.
