Cleaning that would be a real bitch

[–]EasyReader 75 points76 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Plus you'd probably end up with dirt and whatnot between the pages of all your books.

[–]pwaryuex 45 points46 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nah I take my dirty, disgusting shoes off near the door because it means that the inside of my house is cleaner.

And yeah, I'm white, but downvote away!

[–]EasyReader 92 points93 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't know what your skin color has to do with anything anyone said.

[–]topplehat 93 points94 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

White skin makes white dust particles. Harder to see.

[–]sundowntg 47 points48 points ago

Typically removing the shoes at the door is characteristic of Asian households.

[–]kynthija 38 points39 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Or perhaps a Canadian thing... I sure haven't met a household around where I live that wears shoes indoors... muddy carpets would be a bitch

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Some people walk on carpet with shoes? Why?

[–]UnsubstantiatedClaim 27 points28 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And Canadians

[–]ShadowRam 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What? American's wear shoes indoors?! Europeans too?

[–]Nurgle 24 points25 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

We usually just throw the house out when we're done with it.

[–]iigloo 15 points16 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Europeans do not. Okay, I can only really speak for Swedes but I have never experienced any other Europeans doing it.

[–]dolichoblond 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Never quite figured out why Americans never caught on to the idea of house shoes. Given that all but the most cramped city dwellings have plenty of room for a stash of them (or slippers) by the door. So civilized.

[–]walksofar 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah my Euro family definitely doesn't. Neither does anyone I know in here in Canada...I still don't understand americans that do.

[–]LordV 6 points7 points ago

America yea, don't know about euro. Canadians FTW!

[–]bawzonurjaw 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

my dad always insisted that we take our shoes off in the house, it was always a rule of the house, when i went over my friends houses i never had to, and when they came over they would always forget and my dad would yell at them, we could be in the kitchen or any hard floor with shoes though i think its just for the carpet. I follow the same rules in my place, i think its fucking disgusting to wear shoes on the carpet, i like being able to lay on my floor and feel like its not dirty

[–]jasher 1 point2 points ago

Europeans don't wear shoes indoors. Tho it was different in the past

No need. Dirt is already everywhere in the house.

[–]MrMercurial 1 point2 points ago

And Irish. You just wipe your shoes on the mat and off you go...

[–]iigloo 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ehm, or European... Wearing shoes inside would never ever cross my mind. And if someone were to walk into my house with their shoes on I would be really confused as to why someone would be that rude...

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No it's not! It's a characteristic of a CIVILIZED household. Americans haven't leaned that taking your shoes off at the door is a sign of respect, a sign of cleanliness, and better for your health.

[–]zlam 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And a Swedish thing aswell. When I was in the states for the first time ages ago first thing I did when I entered the house I was staying at was taking my shoes iff. I was a bit perplexed that I could not see the shoe stand in the hallway or any other shoes for that matter. The hosts looked at me equally perplexed as to what I was doing. For me, it's just a reflex..

[–]st3ph3n 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Irish here. We wear our shoes indoors. Outside of asia, the take-off-your-shoes-at-the-door thing seems to be common in places that get a lot of snow, where that makes a lot of sense.

[–]Essar 20 points21 points ago

[–]Umbrasoli 5 points6 points ago

White people are the worst. They're so generic, and not to mention white.

[–]SnuggieMcGee 4 points5 points ago

Why wouldn't you? Personally, I hate white people.

[–]chaching37 7 points8 points ago

I enjoy my clean house sans outside shoes as well. I feel like it's incredibly more sanitary (the thought of the accumulation of poo, urine, mucus, and other nastier elements of the outside on the bottom of my shoes is just revolting).

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm white, but downvote away!

Um, okay.

[–]thelandlady 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That kind of makes me laugh...because out of all the people I know, White People are generally the last to make this a requirement. My Black and Asian friends force you to every time.

WHITE PEOPLE PROBLEMS

...Nah, I'm kidding. I do it too. We shall be brothers in cleanliness.

My cat would have a field day slowly pulling books out one at a time and knocking them down the steps one at a time.

[–]soulcakeduck 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The headboard of my bed doubles as a bookshelf. It's a great idea in theory, because I can keep my current reads and all my lifelong favorites right behind my pillow for easy access.

Every morning my cat wakes me up shortly before my alarm by knocking books down. If I set my alarm earlier, I can beat him for a few days, but he adjusts.

[–]guinea_pig 39 points40 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What's with the alternating depths (of the steps)?

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have no idea, nor could I find a good explanation for why they are designed that way.

[–]kekspernikai 84 points85 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is a space saving technique. It allows for a greater height increase over a shorter length, by overlapping the steps. I'm finding it a bit hard to explain...

Here is a different style of the same concept.

[–]sox406 66 points67 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Fuck that! I would never make it to bed after a night of drinking.

[–]libria 3 points4 points ago

Looks easy enough to go up drunk. Coming down w/ a hangover would be brutal, though.

[–]BobGaffney 26 points27 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

By recessing the alternate sides of each succeeding step, you allow a deeper apparent tread for each foot as you alternate. Stairs like this used to be common as attic or loft steps in old buildings, but are illegal under today's building codes. They're easy going up, but going down is really disorienting. One drink and you're on your ass at the bottom.

[–]kekspernikai 4 points5 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, a lot of times when I see these stairs in magazines or cool houses like this, it's not in the United States. Very cool, but very dangerous.

edit: I posted about that house in /r/architecture if you're looking for the website.

[–]vorin 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yep, here's the original staircase with alternate views.

It's obvious that you're supposed to use a specific foot for each step.

[–]schwab002 1 point2 points ago

[–]unholymackerel 5 points6 points ago

left right, left right

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why have steps larger than the bottom of your foot?

[–]journeymanSF 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think the idea is that the smaller steps are smaller than a usual step, not that the larger ones are larger than normal. In reality, you don't need the small steps at all since you would be stepping only on the larger ones. So I think the idea is to save space while not making the stairs completely awkward or unsafe. It also provides easier access to half of the books, and probably provides a nice little spot to sit. You could also probably sit sideways easier and have some room for your knees.

[–]journeymanSF 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

These steps would be incredibly annoying to a left handed person (me)

[–]unholymackerel 2 points3 points ago

lead with the other foot

[–]journeymanSF 1 point2 points ago

[–]KingJulien 3 points4 points ago

im right handed and lead with my right foot...

[–]PontifexPrimus 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They're quite common over here in Germany; they are called "Sambatreppen" (samba stairs) because you move up or down them by alternating left and right steps, so you have to sway your hips. They are usually found in older buildings, leading to rooms you only access occasionally (like the attic), and they can be really really scary if you're using them in the dark or carrying a heavy load.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Left foot, right foot, left foot, right foot. You only step on the ones that are protruding further out.

[–]NothingReallyEnds 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's quite common in old farm houses in Germany and the Netherlands. You can make the stairs steeper like that. But the steps, when old, aren't even and it's really hard to climb such stairs properly. I really don't like it.

[–]Richtar 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think its to make the stairs more comfortable to sit on.

[–]UFChick 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My first thought was "Cool... the way the stairs are means you can sit sideways comfortably and look through your books."

[–]jconnormcl 65 points66 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i suppose if you have 1000 books of the same height this would be a viable option...

[–]a_noni_mouse 25 points26 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wait, you buy shelves that are tailor-made match the height of your book collection?

[–]reodd 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I just buy shelves with adjustable shelving and put paperbacks in the shorter ones and then adjust to suit for different sized hardbacks.

[–]M3wThr33 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, I only buy books that are the same height as the rest.

[–]Atario 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Book shelves typically have much more height between shelves (~12") than staircases do between stairs (~7").

[–]they-see-me-trollin 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i just staple 2 short books together to be the same height as the taller ones. sometimes i have to cut a few inches off the top or bottom, but hey, at least my stairs are level.

Obviously they didn't get permits or have a building inspector look at that because it's absolutely not to building code. Shit wouldn't fly during initial construction of the house.

[–]Prof_G 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Building codes are not the same around the world. And frankly, even in North America, many people will do renovations without getting permits. It's our way of sticking it to .gov. '

I have a whole house (3 beds, 3 floors) that was built without the municipality knowing about it.

[–]epalla 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Can you really tell enough about how it's built to say that it's not to code here?

[–]rabidlemming 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The changing ratio of rise to run in the stairs. How high each step is vs how far horizontally it goes usually has to be uniform. and i know that at least 40 states use the same rise/run tolerances. between 6 1/4" and 7 1/2" rise and 9 1/2" to 11 1/2" run. It is anywhere between 32 and 38 degrees incline.

I like this one better. Cause stairs are such a waste of space but this makes them efficient. What's cool is you could sit on the stairs and find your books. It would be like a little reading adventure. Climbing the stair mountain of reading and discovery.

While visiting in Germany I stayed with a family that bunked me down in the third floor of their house. The stairway was incredibly steep when I saw it from the back side, but when I got around to the side where I would walk up, the steps were made like these. It was no more difficult walking up these steps which are about twice as steep and conventional steps. German ingenuity kicks butt.

Do not run down those stairs during an earthquake..

[–]duxup 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Too easy to trip up the stairs (as it is I do that), also I suspect there would be structural problems due to the lack of support.

Doesn't look as stealthy as the drawer-stairs, but it's still better than a traditional set of stairs. Do want.

You could fit a whole lot of Kindles under there.

[–]travisjudegrant 0 points1 point ago

This would work in Canada. People don't wear their shoes in the house, so dirt wouldn't be an issue. But seriously, there's no need to hold on to all of those books! When I decided to let go of my collection, I left my favourites at bus stops, for random people to discover.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

people wear shoes in houses in other countries?

[–]xtc46 1 point2 points ago

Yea, its pretty common in parts of the US (not in Hawaii where I am from, but we have a heavy asian influence)

[–]sleet01 1 point2 points ago

[–]Gypsiee 0 points1 point ago

I track A lot of mud and dirt up the stairs, I feel like this would be a problem.

[–]PSBlake 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Now, imagine someone traversing those steps in muddy boots. Still seem brilliant?

[–]ThatGuy20 0 points1 point ago

[–]wadelandis 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

These are actually just disregarded books, recycled into a staircase. No one reads books anymore.

[–]Stair_Car 0 points1 point ago

This presupposes where you will put your feet, which is way more annoying than it sounds. Your feet go all over when you walk up stairs. Sometimes you lead with one foot, sometimes the other. If you're carrying heavy things, you might take half steps.

[–]thebullfrog85 0 points1 point ago

a) a poor person who cannot afford enough space for a real bookcase, and we should feel sorry for him.

or

b) pretentious dbag who thinks its cool to have a user unfriendly book case.

either way, not cool..

[–]pookiemon 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not that brilliant. The books under the steps and at the corners are furthest away from your arms reach when standing upright at each step. You'd have to sit on the steps or crawl each time you want to get to them.
