Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

this cheapens what is a complex issue.

No issues. To each his own.

THIS IS NOT A VALID ARGUMENT

This haphazardly but rather accurately and succinctly describes the issue. Most of you all are being silly.

A gamete is simply a haploid version of the organism. And since these are even pictures of the zygotes, they are fully diploid organisms, just young.

EDIT: well the seed and the sperm/egg pics are zygotes. The egg is actually still haploid and thus cannot represent it's adult form in your argument

OP eats zygotes and haploids alike. Is it a gateway to eating babies?

To be fair, this pic sweepingly generalizes. But yeah, I get what you're saying.

This is more fitting for the chicken egg one (balut). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balut_(egg) grey areas..

I have no stance on abortion, but that's a retarded argument, OP.

The problem with the picture is that it fails to recognise that the meanings of these words is not so black and white. A human zygote may be a person, but why? What even is a person? "Zygote" is a scientific term that means something specific - a diploid cell resulting from the fusion of two haploid gametes. "Person" is not a scientific term, and does not have a specific meaning, but the problem is that this picture seems to suggest that it may.

To be honest, this picture totally forgets that things like personal responsibility and cutting off what COULD BECOME a sentient life are part of the issue... but i did laugh so upvote for you

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

Why is sentient human life better than animals? Does it deserve to live more than "inferior" species? I'm not saying your statement is wrong, i'm just playing with thoughts here.

[–]Trenks 0 points1 point ago

In a word? Yes. Spend some time with any chicken and you know it is not wrong to call it an inferior species.

[–]Lil_Red_Riding_Hood -2 points-1 points ago

Nope. But killing for the sake of food is a necessary evil. Killing for the sake of convenience isn't.

[–]MutaschioedGentleman 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

To be fair, you are using the word killing which is debatable in and of itself.

[–]bontox 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

True! And the word convenience. WTF? Hello: rape, incest and health of the mother. Ugh!

[–]Lil_Red_Riding_Hood -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In instances of rape, incest, health of the mother, etc. I do believe that abortion should be allowed. Of course it should. I doubt many rational people would dispute that. I just mean if it's nothing other than two people were being careless, having sex without protection.

But aren't we currently living in a world where we have the option to not eat dead animals? People kill and consume them for pleasure, not survival.

Even a fertilized egg is not a chicken.

That was my point. Is that why I'm being downvoted? People think I was defending the picture?

Anyone else see those fetus cookies in the bottom righthand corner. They look more appetizing than an all star breakfast at Waffle House.

[–]jorgesum -1 points0 points ago

One could equally well make one with a newborn baby in the lower right-hand corner. That's not a person either. Or is it? It can't walk or talk or even open its eyes, these are things that persons can do, and it's tiny! Far tinier than even the smallest human. Babies don't become persons until the age of eighteen months. Or three years. Or something.

The issue is where to draw the line between "person" and "not-person". From a philosophical point of view, I actually think that fertilization, the point at which the entity obtains its full complement of unique human DNA, is a more sensible point at which to draw the line than any other... but I'd hate to lose abortion because it's just so convenient.

But yes, acknowledging it as a complicated issue should be the starting point of any sensible conversation on the subject.

This is so fucking smart. Thanks.

Bad. Maybe that is not a human, but how long into a pregnancy do we wait? By your flawed reasoning if it is 8.5 months, should we still be able to abort it?

[–]Lithomatic 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think the reasoning is that flawed. Abortion at any stage of pregnancy is permissible, since the pregnant woman (who is a person) has the right to do whatever she likes with the non-person thing stuck in her body. Even after birth, a baby isn't a "person" for a couple years anyways, in cultures all throughout history infanticide has carried less of a penalty than murder (Even in the bible!) and is often necessary for a society's survival (if the Inuits kept every baby, they'd face significant starvation). Of course, these days there's plenty of people willing to take a baby off your hands, so infanticide isn't justifiable anymore. I think we might see something similar with abortion if artificial wombs ever become developed and reliable.

IMO, it's ridiculous that as a society we're perfectly comfortable euthanizing animals for any number of reasons but when it comes to terminating a senseless fetus we suddenly start throwing a shitfit.

edit: don't even get me started on the other stupid reasons our society has killed actual people. People so readily disregard the value of human life when it comes to wars and the death penalty that it stuns me that people care about abortion.
