True story: My first ever job interview was at a McDonald's. No, that's not the interesting part. I was asked "Why do you want to work at McDonald's?"

My response? "I need money." The girl interviewing me kind of stammered and asked "Ok, but why here specifically?" and I replied that this job didn't require special training or anything like that. I ended up getting the job only because the girl wasn't comfortable saying "no" to people. Afterwards she interviewed a bunch of people specifically to tell them "no".

Huzzah!

I always hated those kinds of questions, because they are basically asking you to lie, and they know this, too. My real greatest weakness? I dunno, bullets? Massive radiation? I've never tested it, lady!

I think lying is essential to many white-collar jobs.

[–]Quetz23 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hah no kidding. I learned over time that lying in interviews is the key to success as long as you learn to lie in ways they will likely not be able to call you on. Ive talked to a few managers are various fast food places on how much they follow up on references and most said they dont even call the person!

[–]Snufflesaur 4 points5 points ago*

See if I were to answer that truthfully I would say my strong aversion to work. I don't think that's what they want to hear.

[–]WarPhalange 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What they actually want to hear is how you are overcoming a weakness. Some story about how you're not detail oriented enough, so you started carrying post-it notes to write shit down and if you don't do it properly, you force yourself to eat the piece of paper.

If I'm being interviewed for some high-ranking position, I can understand people wanting to know that you'll get shit done and try to improve your professional weak points instead of ignoring them. But I'm 24 and in grad school. If I were to interview for a job right now, my greatest weakness would be getting up at noon on weekends and not eating breakfast until 3pm and the fact that I take personal offense when I am forced to wear a collared shirt.

I can't even tell where I stand at this point, let alone what weaknesses I should be trying to fix.

[–]mikekearn 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What they actually want to hear is how you are overcoming a weakness.

Yeah, and that's the bullshit I feed them, but when both sides know it's a lie, I don't see why we have to bother.

[–]WarPhalange 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Or why you have to wear a suit and tie to interview for a job you'll be doing in jeans and a t-shirt.

[–]thedragon4453 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When I was interviewing people for these type of jobs (customer service with few/no prerequisites) I'd ask these questions sometimes. They aren't good questions, per se, but they are a good gauge of social skills, which is one of the few things you need for a job like this. So if you've got someone that can't answer the question, they might not be very good thinking on their feet.

Of course, there's also the lulz.

[–]shadow1515 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

One of the few things I like about the place I currently work is that they don't bullshit about that kind of thing.

When the interviewer asked me why I wanted the job, I said, "Because I just graduated college, and you pay more than any job offer I've had that actually requires my degrees. I need money to pay rent and student loans." He replied, "Great! This job sucks, and the only reason anyone works here is for the money. You have the right motivations for this line of work. If you want fulfillment or a challenge you will quit in less than three months."

[–]Timja 5 points6 points ago

Even if the job does suck, having management that doesn't bullshit you must be refreshing.

[–]shadow1515 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It really is. All of my coworkers, my supervisors, and my manager are very open about how much we hate what we do. But it's $12.95/hour, which in my county is $5k per year above the median income for females ($5k below for males, but good luck finding any of those jobs - it's mostly doctors at the county hospital and a few lawyers and business owners dragging it up), and no one's going to turn that down.

Similarly with minimum wage:

You're paying me the least you can without getting arrested, so I will work the least I can without getting fired.

I never understood some bosses' mentalities that their minimum wage employees should be going above and beyond to make the business flourish, yet reaping none of the success...

[–]RupeThereItIs 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You seriously don't understand? I find that hard to swallow... but jut in case... If you can convince someone to break there back for next to 0 compensation, you win big. If they refuse to do so, you don't lose anything but your time trying to get them to think they should work harder.... and if you find another who WILL break there back for minimum wage, you can replace the non-cooperator. It's obviously in the Boss' best interest to try and work each minimum wage, commodity, worker as hard as they are willing... if you burn 'em out, there are 20 more to replace 'em with limited training, etc.

[–]shadow1515 14 points15 points ago

[–]mintyy 1 point2 points ago

I definitely understand how that is one approach to managing a workforce. However, the opposite way of treating your employees to get the most out of more of them through the establishment of respect, responsibility and involvement, is stifled when the first thing that is laid out is putting the employee in a position of replacability and disrespect. This system has proven to be profitable and beneficial for the corporation in other ways than bottom line.

I'm with ya. Theory X vs Theory Y: I'm a huge fan of Y myself, but I do understand the motivations of the theory X tool-box-managers (even if I disagree strongly). Was playing devils advocate to make it clear why they behave that way.

[–]xempathy 0 points1 point ago

The turnover is too high because of the job types usually. If the employer could reasonably expect to keep people long term then it would make sense to pay them more. Since they usually don't end up staying though you give raises to the people that do and start the new people off at minimum. If Mcdonald's paid $10 an hour i'm sure that while the turnover would be less it would still be high as hell. Why should they waste their money if they don't know if you are a good worker or not?

Capitalism the new Slavery: electric boogaloo.

[–]Merlaak 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Conversely, many workers want to do the least amount of work possible for the most amount of pay. If a certain job at a company paid $5/hr and a marginally more difficult job paid $7/hr, people would be attracted to the higher paying position because it offers more money, not because they may have an opportunity to work harder.

[–]shadow1515 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think there's a threshold, though. I haven't yet found a job that pays what I think I'm worth, but some of my friends from high school have started to. The moment that they make enough money that paying their bills isn't a struggle and they can start saving, their attitude changes considerably. Once they believe that they're actually getting paid a reasonable amount of money for what they do, they start working harder.

"Well ya see, Norm, it's like this. A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine ! That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers."

Some jobs are so shitty that death is preferable. I keep plugging away because I have a family to support, but the thought of accidental death is somewhat comforting to me, because they would get my life insurance and I wouldn't have to spend the majority of my life doing something that drains my sanity anymore.

I'm a debt collector, but I don't hate it for the reason you'd think. I'm cynical/sociopathic enough that I don't mind calling people about their student loans (especially because I make less money than most of them, and have a higher payment on my own student loans). The monotony of going in to work every single day knowing that there will be no point where I will be required to demonstrate any creativity or even have a thought in my head wears me down pretty quickly.

Three months of summer time. It's not that bad out, but you're horny and tired, and you just want a fucking bed. You've been walking for hours looking at 5 am for a quiet place to sleep. Its colder than you'd like, but you'll deal with it. You've dealt with worse. You know that this town has some folks to ask for help from, but god knows if you can find them. You're tripping over yourself because you're just so fucking tired, you smell like piss and everyone knows it. People avoid you like the plague.

And you can't quit. There is no hope of "leaving" homelessness.

Of course there are shelters and shit, but that's the first steps to looking for a job and getting your shit together.

My job is weird, can't say I hate it, I do marketing/promotions, but I only work 3-4 days a week and I'm getting by just fine. However, I had a 9-5 for 5 years, it SUCKED. And, yeah, I just stayed there because I was afraid to quit. I've definitely found that I didn't need all the stuff I had and I feel much better having less.

Actually, I would definitely enjoy homelessness more than my job (I had a college professor who actually chose to be homeless for years before he finally decided what he wanted a PhD in, because any other work felt like a complete waste of his time).

If I didn't have a wife and a kid on the way, I would absolutely move to a warm city and just wander the streets. If I starve to death, no big deal, at least I didn't waste the time I had.

I sometimes think that San Francisco businesses purposefully tell the government to not clean out the homeless people from the financial district because they provide intense motivation for all of the workers who cross their paths on the way to work.

Downscale your life until you figure out the absolute minimum you can live with. You don't need as much shit as you think you do and you don't need as much money as you think you do.

[–]RupeThereItIs 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

True. I'd suggest to any whipper snappers out there, to live like a collage kid for as long as possible (and I don't mean bing drinking). Live cheap, you get a raise? don't raise your cost of living. You don't NEED that huge TV. you don't NEED that expensive car. You don't NEED a bigger apartment or house. Live well beneath your means, and after a few years you'll be shocked how much money you have, you won't be TIED to your job. You'll have a nest egg that lets you know you can quite at any time, you won't, but just knowing you CAN is great comfort.

[–]soapyluggage 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh, so now I can keep my miserable job and ALSO be miserable when I get home because I have a tiny TV, a shitty car that breaks down every 4 days, and a tiny apartment with no room for my stuff.

Good deal.

[–]RupeThereItIs 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nope. YOU are gonna be miserable, because you've confused commercial goods for happiness. Don't believe me? go ahead & buy that awesome Audie, 60 inch TV and McMansion.... it won't ever be enough to make you happy for more then a few days, eventually you'll reset back to normal & now with less money & more debt around your neck. As for the car, I didn't say to keep a shit box that breaks down every 4 days, I said don't get the expensive one (a car that breaks down every 4 days is VERY expensive).

[–]PixelMagic 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't know why you are being down voted, you speak absolute truth. I recently got a job that pays twice as much as my old one, but I have not changed my living circumstances at all. Still drive the same car, have the same 6 year old computer, a 27-inch CRT Television, Same sized apartment, etc. As a bonus, I am now much closer to work, and am spending 1/5th the amount of gas I used to.

[–]soapyluggage 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And what is your hobby? The point is people need to be entertained. They spend their money on something they enjoy. I don't have a huge TV or an expensive car and live in a 3 room apartment. But somebody like the expensive car, and that's how they invest their time and money. It makes them happy.

I hate this fucking attitude of "just buy what you NEED and your spirit will lift you to happiness!"

[–]PixelMagic 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, certainly you do have a point. If cars is one hobby, then there is no way around that. Filmmaking, photography, and CGI are my hobbies. I'd like to have a brand new computer for those, but the one I have is sufficient. It does what I need it to do, if only a bit slower than I would like. I also rarely watch Television, which is why I'm not jumping to buy a 60 inch HDTV, even though I would like one to watch movies on.

But if one is like me, no matter what expensive item I buy, it quickly looses it's luster and attraction to me, and now I'm just in debt for something I've grown tired of.

That doesn't fix the part where you spend 8 hours a day doing something you hate. No matter how minimalist you get, it is probably still going to cost you something to keep a roof over your head and food in your stomach.

I've had to explain this in class a few times this year: social programs are not explicitly socialism (the form of government).

And yes, a free market with some kind of accountability to protect the working man would be nice.

[–]TheSchmitz09[S] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A perfect world would have a Socialist government: people cooperating by selflessly doing different tasks that all promote the common good. People just hate socialism because Communism never quite worked.

Robots? pfft! A perfect world would see me as one of say 1000 surviving men who are charged with repopulating the planet. It's an exhausting job but somebody would have to do it.

A perfect world could have an authoritarian government run by a benevolent leader. There are no inherently good or perfect governments.

[–]MaidenLane 0 points1 point ago

Partly. "True Socialism" is an academic principle. We all know the reason it does not work in practice is because of human nature, and a lack of accountability.

That is why the only partial success it has ever had has been with small and isolated groups of people. IE: If there is no fish to eat, it is because "x" did not fish today, etc...

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

The largest Amish community right now is 55,000 strong. Why couldn't it work for 100,000 or 1,000,000 even?

[–]hollywoodbob 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It works for the Amish because their religion forbids the failings of capitalistic society. To the Amish having more than you need is a bad thing, being wealthy is regarded as shameful.

If you could get rid of greed socialism would work anywhere.

Maybe one day we'll phase money out of society and raise a few generations of people who do things because they want to rather than because they have to in order to earn a living. But before that can happen the technology will have to be such that all the shitty jobs won't require people to do them.

Albeit a utopian fantasy, it'd still make for a nice society.

There are actually people who advocate shifting our current society to a non-monetary economy.

Homogeneous cultural for one. Rumspringa(sp?) dumping those who don't play well in such a society onto our society at large, for another (those who stay, CHOSE under pressure to play by the stringent rules). expounding on point one, the community is held together by very strong religious convictions compared to our (yes even in the USA) more secular society. So my theory is culture & purging the non-cooperators/non-followers at an early age. As usual, i'm totally talking out my ass so, sorry for the smell.

On a more serious note, I think it's because of the different values the Amish have. For them family and community are much more important than personal gain.

[–]shadow1515 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And that's really it. Anyone who puts their own personal gain above the success of the community will necessarily be a detriment to the development of an ideal society.
