I can't view the wordpress image from work, but from the pic they look like small guage mortar rounds from the AAV's (amphibious assault vehicles) they're used by US Marines for amphib landings, especially the 31 MEU. In the smoke screen to the background, I can see a US Navy LCU, and what looks like an LHD, possibly the the USS Essex, USS Boxer or Bonny Dick. I'd bet the photos were from the mock landing drills that took place along the S. Korean coast as an FU to N. Korea after the shelling of Yeonpyeong Island. Nothing riles up a hostile country better then a few live ammo drills near the boarder.

Edit: Analyzed the photo a little closer (weapons expert here). The helo in the background is a SH-60 Seahawk, the red symbol half back toward the rotor is squadron HSL-51 'The Warlords' based out of Japan. The ship is LHD-2 USS Essex, and its flying two flags x-ray (means commencing firing, which is usually flown in a drill) and the second I can't make out, but judging by the helo off the deck its likely to be the hotel flag (means helo ops). The AAV's are definitely part of MEU 31, they're the older vietnam style and are mostly beach assault configuration (there's a few different varients, don't see any engineer rigs or heavier 20mm cannons; just twin 50cals). The LCU off to the right I can't make out a marker on, but its most likely to be from ACU-1 'the Surf Riders'.

Why is there a giant exploding smoke ring in mid-air?

Its a live fire excercise and they are using small guage mortars, essentially grenades. You ever play MW2 or BlackOps? You know the noobtube? That, but fired into the air from the vehicle. If you zoom in on the AAVs (the camo floaty tanks) there are launchers on the turrets, they're the three finger looking things on both sides... now if you look at the air burst and then slightly down to the left, you can see the shell casing.

Edit: They're meant for anti-personnel, they spit shrapnel if the vehicle is being overrun by infantry. Because they have to float, they're taller then the average infantry vehicle and because of that, they do terrible when close in. This picture shows more air bursts http://i54.tinypic.com/rqzp7k.jpg and if you look at the water you can see the shrapnel.

Edit Edit: Those same launchers are also how the AAV's pop smoke. They're slow, barely sea worthy, and often filled with up to a whole squad of marines... soo they make for good targets and a covered beach landing is ideal.

[–]panfist 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't quite understand...it's an airburst of an anti-personnel mortar, that detonated basically directly over the vehicle that fired it, in the middle of the ocean, where there isn't likely to be any personnel. So, why would they fire those rounds in this type of situation?

[–]935Penn 28 points29 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Training. They don't make paintball shrapnel. They do it at sea because they can't do it safely on the beach when troops start pounding out.

Edit: Third look, it could be popping smoke too. The airbursts look similar and it'd make more sense to have them that closely above. The other pic I referenced is the anti-personnel, this could be screening with smoke.

[–]jutct 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But, why doesn't that kill people on the boat? It's right over their heads!?

[–]TheRealBramtyr 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The AAV's are closed on the top. The exercises in the larger photo they are just popping a smoke screen; Crew have their heads out of the hatches and would be vulnerable to shrapnel otherwise.

[–]Atomic235 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Probably because the photographer used a telescopic lens from a pretty good distance away, and the foreground is being compressed into the background.

In other words, it's probably an optical illusion. That air-burst could be a pretty good clip away from the boat that launched it.

[–]dVnt 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

FWIF, that angle makes it very hard to tell how far away that explosion is from those craft.

Good targets, yeah especially with those thick white exhaust columns they seem pretty easy to hit from the beach.

[–]Sandsworth 1 point2 points ago

thick white exhaust = laying a smoke screen to hide the larger ships and landing craft in the rear.

Actually there is a lot more to the Colonel Blitz Exercise then you mention.

Not only are amphibs/APC's are landing but fully loaded LCAC's with a few M1A1's from the tank battalion, humv's, Cobra's, CH-46's, Stallions, Uh-1's, a battalions of Marines + HQ CO, and sprinkle in some harrier's you now have a full fledged invasion of some hard dicked Marines - ready to whoop some ass.

After all the commotion of the beach landing you get to your destination and play war games for the next week or two.

Semper Fi

Edit - Well seems they have renamed it to Dawn Blitz - seems much larger then before/or what I can remember.

[–]pootastic 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

YUT! Although riding in Amtraks does suck a whole new level of shit. It's not fun looking into the track on the Amphib, looking up and seeing the beach X number of miles away and knowing you're going to spend that distance wet, breathing diesel fumes and puking on the floor. Actually, looking back, no wonder we kill people like no other.

[–]Sandsworth 0 points1 point ago*

I heard (From a Marine) they are phasing out Marine Landings since we haven't made one for tactical reasons in over 50 years. Is that true?

[–]935Penn 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes and No, leaning more no. We haven't made a major beachhead in a long time, but tactically there is no better way to get a large amount of troops and equipment into a hostile zone quickly. You can air insert small covert units, but to wage a long offensive, you need to bring in a lot of heavy gear, and unless we're fighitng in/around our own borders, the sea is how its going to happen.

The US has over 10,000 troops and supporting equipment within 3 hours sail from N. Korea. If Kim Jong's replacement decides to flex his muscles and backhand S. Korea, you can bet there will be a major amphibious landing soon after. They've actually been working on the replacement for the AAV for years, its the EFV (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expeditionary_Fighting_Vehicle) and if you've lived in San Diego, you might have seen them doing drills off of Coronado Island.

[–]mdickw 5 points6 points ago

BTW, the EFV was canceled last month.

[–]935Penn 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Haha damn, I'm out of date on that one. It could just be another delay though... the USMC V-22 Osprey saw the same development hiccups from as far back as the 80's but were feilded in 2007. I could be wrong on this one, so hat to you sir. I'd wax nostalgic on it though, taking away the sea based assault from marines would be repurposing them from the very meaning of their name : "A branch of the U.S. armed forces composed chiefly of amphibious troops under the authority of the Secretary of the Navy."

[–]mdickw 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, as Gates said, "let me be clear: this decision does not call into question the Marines’ amphibious assault mission." We're just going to have to make do with what we've got for now. It's really an issue of priorities: "if fully executed, the EFV — which costs far more to operate and maintain than its predecessor — would essentially swallow the entire Marine vehicle budget and most of its total procurement budget for the foreseeable future" (Gates again).

How do you get to become a weapons expert? I can't find the major option at Phoenix Online University. Thanks!

[–]dblagbro 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Start by not even considering Phoenix as a "University"... move to where you have NO college educated neighbors, then invite them hunting. See, you start small with hunting rifles, then one day, you may, just might if you try hard enough, make it to the big leagues.

[–]NeedsMoreMinerals 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was joking about the Phoenix part but I'm sincerely interested in the answer. Does it require an army background?

[–]dblagbro 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, doesn't require an army background but its A LOT harder without it... even within the army, special forces and / or weapons specialist background is much preferred.

I too was partially joking, partially serious about the move to the country part.... cities don't foster much in terms of firing ranges and hunting - don't try to start learning about an M16... start with some hand-guns then hunting rifles, understand their physics, and then understand that the military weapons are going to be the same physics but with higher numbers (in terms of velocity, etc)... seriously, take it from the basics, don't start with the advanced stuff; that'd be like learning to drive in a bus rather than the family car or more often, on a bike.

[–]grahamja 0 points1 point ago

The last Marine Corps times made a comment about the EFV being canceled, but a new cheaper program would be started soon. AAV's are ficking old.

I live near the ACV base on the 5. my buddy said they did a big war game about 6 months ago with landing vehicles and it was a huge failure. Speaking as an american I hope not.

[–]pootastic 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Probably not so much a failure as it was lack of experience. We've been in the desert and mountains for years doing counterinsurgency ops. Good to see the Marines getting back to our roots.

Just to impress further, I could also note the sailors on the flight deck of the Essex. I see four on the middle right. Two grape's and two safety-O's. The US navy has a flight deck rainbow and from it you can tell what they're likely doing besides watching an amphib landing.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What color do pilots and other non flight deck crew personnel wear while on the flight deck?

[–]935Penn 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Pilots wear a flight suit and are usually on the flight deck while going too and from the plane/helo. Flight suits can be different colors, but usually drab green, black or blue depending on squadron. Other personnel wear their regular uniforms but only when the flight deck is clear. If helo ops are in place, the flight deck is off limits to non-flight crew.

Edit because I used the wrong 'where'

[–]akmjolnir 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Let me correct you on a few things:

There is only one style of AAV, the AAVP7A1 RAM/RS... I was the crew chief on one, we just call them amtracs, or tracs (amphibious tractor). The RAM/RS is the upgraded version with a more powerful engine/transmission (Cummins VT 400 -> VT525), and improved suspension (same as M2 Bradley).

It never had a 20mm cannon, or two M2s. The P7 (troop carrier) had a Mk. 19 and an M2, the C7 and R7 had a single M240G.

The "O" is one of the amtracs firing off a smoke grenade from the launcher behind the turret, and you can see a second grenade to the left, and down, right before it to explode.

[–]935Penn 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I stand corrected sir. I was a sailor myself and only got a ride twice in an AAV (from White Beach into the belly of an LPD with the 31 Meu). 20mm's were on the striker's right? In the well deck we'd lump them all together with the Amtracs in the wood section by the sterngate.

I am positive there are multiple varieties of AAV's though, I've been in a command AAV and I've seen the ones with the engineer arm on the back. When they hit splashdown they were so heavy we'd always fear them not coming back up.

Since you didn't understand, I'll explain.

I was pointing out your smugness. The mortar is the weapon that fires the mortar shell. And it doesn't fire shrapnel, it fires shells that explode into shrapnel.

This was my job in the Marines. The explosion you see is a smoke grenade launched from the center AAV. You can tell because his turret is the only one with the hatch closed... the grenade is made up of basically white phosphorous and rubber (you dont want any of it to touch you.. it doesn't stop burning until all the rubber is gone). There is a safety mechanism inside the turret (where the grenade control is located) that prevents the grenade launchers from going off with the hatch open.

The white smoke coming out of the AAV's is from the from the smoke generator ("smoke jeny"), it basically drips diesel onto the exhaust side of the turbo. It doesn't get hot enough to burn, but hot enough to vaporize into the white smoke. You only turn these on when you are within a few hundred meters of the shore or "combat speed". The driver literally lays on the gas until he hits shore and hopes the naval shelling and helo fire has stopped by then.

In the world of amphibious assaults, its better to be late than early to the party. If you have any other questions ill try to answer them, i still love this stuff.
