Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Doc: Its worse than I feared. I'm afraid your son has the knack. It's a rare condition characterized by a extreme intuition about all things mechanical and electrical, coupled with a complete social ineptitude.

Mother: Will he be able to lead a normal life?

Doc: No... He'll be an engineer.

I've always heard that audio clip paired with a Dilbert comic. Was it originally from Dilbert? I've never found another source.

Yea, it is from the animated Dilbert show. It's available on Netflix streaming.

But yep! that was growing up. I remember watching that when it was first on TV back when I was in 5th grade laughing my ass off while quietly crying to myself because I knew it was true.

I can't upvote it. When this happened, when I as a kid, everyone was completely devastated. As an adult, I look back on it with a certain cynicism. Adventuring is a dangerous business, and people die. It's expected. The space body count went up. I can't, however, really be that crass about it, and it's bigger than the deaths of the astronauts aboard (as unfortunate as that is).

It's because, even though people will say that the slow-down of the space program is:

A) Non-existent. It hasn't slowed down. Look at all the great stuff we're doing.

B) A necessary consequence of the fact that the moon race was politically fueled.

C) A good thing. Space should be a low priority.

This was really a turning point, it felt, in the 80s. You see, when I was a kid, people were proud to be Americans, and we were especially proud of our space program. There were plans.. big plans, for next-generation space-shuttles, an American space station, and hints at permanent settlement on the moon and Mars missions just decades away.

None of that happened. Don't get me wrong. What we have now is quite exciting. We've got a functional ISS. We got private space industry cropping up. It's a regular Wild West in space right now. It's a very interesting time to be alive. The USA, however, really lost something in the fallout of that disaster.

Why is the flag backwards?

[–]djepik 26 points27 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Good observation, but it's not. It's meant to appear as if the flag were hung appropriately and was then being blown in the wind as the shuttle travelled forward. (At least I think that's the case - I've just extrapolated from flags on the shoulders of military uniforms).

You know some German engineer is squirming in his grave because iz not dis simple!

[–]mediapl0y 35 points36 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It could have been. U-boats spent little time fully submerged and when they did, they probably were too busy sinking ships for anyone to poop.

[–]brainburger 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Even if the u-boat was at the surface, if the outflow was below the surface it would have positive pressure in the wrong direction. It`s a lot more likely that the toilet flowed into a septic tank which was pumped out at intervals.

[–]mediapl0y 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

On first guess (and as one that has spent plenty of time on boats) I would totally agree with you. However, it doesn't appear that the U-boats were designed that way. Here is a brief excerpt of the info found on this page.

They didn’t have a storage system so the contents had to be pumped directly into the water when flushed and the water pressure at depth was too great to allow this. A storage tank that could have been pumped out later would have been a better idea but that’s not how the boats were designed.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No shit. U-1206 (Type VIIC U-Boat ) sank because of toilet malfunction.

U-1206 was one of the late war boats fitted with the new deepwater high-pressure toilets which allowed them to be used while running at depth. Flushing these toilets was extremely complicated and special technicians were trained to operate them.

On April 14, 1945, 8 miles off Peterhead, Scotland, while cruising at a depth of 200 feet, misuse of the new head caused large amounts of water to flood the boat. According to the Commander's official report, while in the engine room helping to repair one of the diesel engines, he was informed that a malfunction involving the toilet caused a leak in the forward section. The leak flooded the submarine's batteries (located beneath the toilet) causing them to release chlorine gas, leaving him with no alternative than to surface. Once surfaced, U-1206 was discovered and bombed by British patrols, forcing Schlitt to scuttle the submarine. One man died in the attack, three men drowned in the heavy seas after abandoning the vessel and 46 were captured.[2] Schlitt recorded the location as 57°24′N 01°37′W / 57.4°N 1.617°W / 57.4; -1.617 but the wreck could not be relocated.

[–]blargn 2 points3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It really wasn't that simple: U-1206 was lost partly due to problems with its high pressure toilet system.

Apparently the Tower of London used to be famous for the fact you could smell it for miles - the moat was an absolute festering blackened mess of shit and carcasses and all the most foul things imaginable - and that was done deliberabely. This was so even if you did intend to ford the moat during an attack, there would be a pretty good chance you'd die of some infection or disease, so it simply didn't happen.

I liked his book Incredible Explosions better -- the title was a little misleading, but the illustrations were chaotic fun. I loved the exploded train showing the engineer with the individual layers of the sandwich under his hat separated along with all the nuts and bolts of the engine, as well as the exploded London metro station surrounded by unexploded Nazi blitzkrieg bombs.

Also, IIRC, every exploded illustration in the book had little green aliens and a flying saucer hidden somewhere inside the drawing... even inside the human body. ಠ_ಠ

My friend had one of these. I remember the image of the exploded tank also had the driver cut in half, showing his intestines. I'm sure it was the illustrator's little rebellion against having to draw what the publishers thought would sell better.

Stinky Cheese Man! Definitely one of my favorite books as a kid. I was lucky enough to meet Jon Scieszka at a Parent/Teacher Meet & Greet where I got my picture taken with him (he also signed my book(s) and all that). Last year my mom was at the National Book Festival, saw Jon was doing signings and got him to sign my book again for me, probably 15 years later.

Super nice guy!

Someone at work was giving away a bunch of books and I immediately took everything in the "children's Star Wars encyclopedia" genre, while the herd scrambled for the adult fiction.

For the rest of the day every time a colleague would notice them sitting on my desk we'd have the exact same conversation:

Them: I didn't know you had kids.
Me: I don't.
Them: Oh, a nephew perhaps?
Me: No.
Them: Maybe you should leave them for someone with kids.
[long awkward silence while I clutch the books tightly]
