FYI - The view out of the windows is fake. The Earth's too small and you wouldn't be able to see the stars. Phil Plait made a post about it a while back.

Wow... Look at all that outdated technology...

[–]Javbw 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's pretty advanced for 1970's tech. That must be a newer orbiter, with the glass controls.

Also, all of those large switches and buttons are extremely well built, and will outlive the buttons found on most electronics. they have to be, since NASA has such stringent requirements and demands on every piece of equipment.

the software that runs the orbiters have no bugs. They have to write perfect code, which cannot crash. The software design model they use is extremely expensive and time consuming, so it is difficult to do it outside of something as mission critical as space deployment.

Modern CPUs have such small tracings that cosmic rays it them and burn out pathways very easily.

a friend of mine at JPL told me most of the satellites and probes use something similar to a 486, with very large tracings and redundant sections in case something pops. a generic laptop, with a modern CPU lasts a year on the ISS for this reason.

So I guess it is outdated, but for the Job, it seems to be modern enough.

Came here to say this had to be a composite because of the contrast of interior and exterior lighting.

[–]evitcele 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's not necessarily a problem if you have a long exposure, a dark cabin, and a single flash. But you still wouldn't be able to see the stars.

[–]MrDanger 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's what I meant.

[–]twilightmoons 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The stars are WAY too big in the image. Just about all stars are what amount to point-sources of light, not round blobs.

That, and the light of the earth's surface would wash them out... along with the instrumentation. The human eye deals with contract/lighting differences much better than cameras.

[–]ShadyG 25 points26 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The stars are big because when you're in space you're closer to them.

[–]hallucienda 44 points45 points ago

Picture from :

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:STSCPanel.jpg

The "glass cockpit" installed on the Space Shuttle: JSC2000-E-10522 (March 2000) -- Eleven new full-color, flat-panel display screens in the Shuttle cockpit replace 32 gauges and electromechanical displays and four cathode-ray tube displays. The new "glass cockpit" is 75 pounds (34 kg) lighter and uses less power than before, and its color displays provide easier pilot recognition of key functions.

The new cockpit is expected to be installed on all shuttles in the NASA fleet by 2002, and it sets the stage for the next cockpit improvement planned to fly by 2005: a "smart cockpit" that reduces the pilot's workload during critical periods. During STS-101 Atlantis will fly as the most updated shuttle ever, with more than 100 new modifications incorporated during a ten-month period in 1998 at Boeing's Palmdale, Ca., Shuttle factory.

Note: this is a composite image that was published prior to this cockpit configuration ever flying. The control sticks and seats are missing.

The background was photoshopped from a separate image.

Too bad they only were able to get funding because the engineers tricked one group of brutes into believing that it would somehow help them beat down a competing clan of brutes.

[–]AntiMythRenegade 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Impressive? Yes. But it also begs the question as to what could be possible if humanity had worked as one through our progression to become the dominant species of this planet.

[–]omgpro 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

We'd probably just sit around being fat and happy. Which I don't have a problem with, but conflict spurns action. We only went to the moon to shove it in Russia's face.

[–]AntiMythRenegade 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is likely true. However, if conflict was simply not a part of the human condition, perhaps other motives would create positive action.

[–]DEADB33F 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

More like create apathy.

If conflict was simply not a part of the human condition we'd likely still be living in caves and eating berries. Look at the Australian aborigine for an example.

They were pretty happy & contented though, so there is that.

[–]hseldon10 12 points13 points ago

[–]yumpizza 1 point2 points ago

Competition drives humanity more than anything. The reason we went to the Moon was pure competition. Without the Cold War, no one would've tried.

Most human advancement is from trying to be better than the next guy, either to become rich, famous, gain self-gratification, or to be better at war.

[–]Concubicycle 5 points6 points ago

Definitely. There's way too many buttons on that thing, you could get rid of at least 20.

[–]theghostofme 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

20? You could get rid of all but one:

The touch responsive Launch/Fly/Maneuver/Control/Land button with built-in Retina Display that is designed to know exactly what kind of situation an astronaut is in and will adjust to that situation when swiped. It also comes with Angry Birds Lite, Farmville, and I am T-Pain pre-installed!* All at the reasonable price of $163,239,000, a small price for NASA to pay for the easy of automation.

*Warning: The 1G L/F/M/C/L Touch does not support multitasking, and it is advised that no other apps be run during a mission. To disable the Auto Security Lock, go into Settings > General and switch it to off.

[–]xCoffee 7 points8 points ago

funnily enough, many people on reddit/in the general population have a very strong tendency to blame major corporations/government/political parties as well for things they don't understand particularly well.

It’s an embedded system, really, and any more would probably be overkill. The tasks that it has to perform are probably relatively simple compared to what it requires to play a compressed video or render a 3D environment in real-time.

Sure, people tend to assume that just because it’s in space means that it much be ridiculously complex. Well, it is, but there are many who don’t realize how complicated the average computer is these days.

Haha that's a great point. I thought reddit was pretty awesome when I joined over 2 years ago, and still do! There has been a seemingly noticeable change in posts as reddit becomes more popular but by sticking to certain sub-Reddits and unsubbing the most popular ones like /funny it's still great.

[–]imightsoundlikeajerk 1 point2 points ago

I love this site. I have made a game out of reddit. See every comment I make as a reply has a clue in it for the next treasure and an another clue. This is like a treasure with all of you and in case some one is following that treasure.

Thank you very much. I hope you're a hot girl that I'll never get to be with in this life. We will sure meet in afterlife (I hope it would be better than the movie) and in case you are waiting for me. Just be ready to make me a sandwich.

Non-descriptive post titles are not constricted to one period of time. They're just a habit that needs to be beaten out of a large number of annoying redditors.

[–]webKami 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I totally agree, specially it annoys me when you have seen a link/picture already with a proper title and somebody submits it in few hours with title like this and you have to see a repost for karma whoring.

[–]drgradus 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's probably due to the fact that he wants it to get seen more than for karma whoring.

Had he not, according to your definition, "karma whored," I would not have seen this awesome pic. That would have made my day just a little less awesome. If karma whoring makes my day better, I'm all for it. Now, if it makes my day worse, or is a repost of something already front-paged three or four times, I'll be more inclined to agree with you.

But that's what downvotes are for.

[–]krelian 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's a good point but it's a bit self centered and too specific for this case. Try looking at it in a general way, what if everyone was doing it, would reddit be a better or worst place?

Eh. I sit in front of this plus more every day at work. And all of that is sitting in front of over 100 monitors. (Actually only 12 divided into many by a computer...)

It becomes second nature.

Keep in mind that you're looking at the Hightower of 1960's technology there. That's when it was designed. Some additions obviously, but it was said to be mostly outdated technology when it took off for the first time

I call shenanigans! All those buttons are mere props. Everyone knows that the space shuttle is run with a series of cables and pulleys, with maybe one lever attached to a steam whistle...
