Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Strange Brew had a very special MGM logo - instead of roaring, 'it' bletches, and the main characters spend a few seconds trying to convince it to roar (including playing with its tail). The lion finally roars a minute in, during their introduction.

The lions they used for these things must've been incredibly well trained, and possibly heavily sedated.

Loved the MGM logo as a child, wonder how I never thought about the fact that they actually filmed the lion close up like that. Coolest photoshoot ever?

I couldn't agree more, that is absolutely amazing. The huge mic a foot in a half away is crazy too. The mic kind of looks like one of those 20's era carbon condenser mics but I can't tell for sure.

[–]rsound 338 points339 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's hard to tell exactly, but I think it is a Western Electric model 387 double button carbon microphone. They were big in radio and telephone equipment at that time. LINK It could also be a 1925 Kellogg Model 501. They had a line of telephone equipment too.

Condenser microphones existed then, but they looked like miniature radio cabinets because they needed a amplifier and power supply right in the case to work. Double Button Carbon Microphones had good sound for the time, and had VERY high output, which was important during the era where amplifier power was expensive.

i am interested to know how the hell you know so much about 1920s recording equipment

[–]rsound 347 points348 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I make my living in IT, but I was blessed with excellent hearing and a habit of tinkering (and a dad who encouraged it). I built my first microphone at 11 (sounded like crap), my first mixer at 13, and did my first sound-on-sound recording at 15 after hearing a Les Paul record and wondering how it was done. Now I'm chief sound technician at my Church (no pay of course).

It's AMAZING how much of what you see in the recording studio today was developed in the 1920's, usually by Bell Labs to improve the telephone and later radio. Turns out the problems are very similar. The basic technology for disk recording with microphones was established by 1928. High Fidelity was available by 1935. Hi-Fi stereo recordings were being done in 1939. A list would be too boring for this forum, but standards set in that time are still in use today in every recording studio.

I'm a voracious reader of the history of technology. Recommended books that are in my library: "Audio Cyclopedia" by Tremaine, "From Tin Foil to Stereo: Evolution of the Phonograph" by Oliver Read, "Elements of Radio Service" by Marcus (1947), "Telephony" by McMeen and Miller (1922)

For the same reason I'm not working in Radio or Recording; Doing what you love isn't enough, you must FIRST make a good living. I'm a Boomer, but was well steeped in the Depression-era work ethic: You worked to put food on the table: what you loved was the hobby you did on Saturday after the yard work was done.

really? racist Tom and Jerry?

[–]Nukleon 29 points30 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Tom's owner was a very "mammy" like black woman, with a voice to boot. Even though you only ever saw her legs, this was deemed racist, and her voice overdubbed. I'm not sure if they digitally changed the art for her.

I do know that they have taken out several references to Tobacco, both in Tom & Jerry, Tex Avery and other shorts from that period, digitally replacing them with straws, lollipops and whatnot.

The story of editing these goes way back though. Since they were originally shown before movies, some of them were a little raunchy, especially stuff like "Little Red Hot Riding Hood" if I remember the title correctly, and thus edited when they were shown on TV. I don't know if the original version even exists anymore, but it's a point to remember that these weren't always aimed at kids either.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

She wasn't the owner, she was the maid.

[–]AQUA2 16 points17 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Being an innocent child, I never noticed the racism, but now that I look back at it, there were some objectionable episodes...like the one where Tom's stranded on an island inhabited by a bunch of very stereotypical-looking black 'savages', if you will.

I don't think the producers were intending for it to be racist. It's just that, when you think about it, most tropical islands are occupied by dark-skinned people, and in the bushes, some tribes might have retained certain traditions which have shaped the stereotypes embodied in that particular episode. We can argue that there is a n unfair depiction of black people, but come on...it's a cartoon...for children. Surely something as benign as a sketch of a cat chasing a mouse isn't going to turn them into white supremacists.

[–]MozTS 30 points31 points ago

The obvious one is the lion is way to close to the camera, and would look distorted if the were using such a wide lens.

also, why would the crew be lit?

[–]zakool21 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why would it be distorted? If in the center of the frame, distortion is minimized with w/a lenses.

[–]unfortunatejordan 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In the original logo, the lion looks 'flatter', as if it were filmed from a distance. I can't really prove it, that's just the way it seemed to me too.

At the close distance depicted here, the lion's face should look more 'bulbous', for lack of a better word. More difference in size of features at different distances. Consider this image of a dog taken from (very) close range.

But I dunno. Just a hunch.

According to Wikipedia "Originally silent, the sound of Leo the Lion's roar was added to films for the first time in August 1928".

Even though this big lion may look all calm and domesticated it's still quite dangerous. Fucking animals
are completely unpredictable. One day they'll act all nice and the next they're mad at you for coming
into their cage for feeding time. Lions are crazy strong too. Which makes them more difficult to jerk off
of a pedestal, like the one in the picture, if they don't want to move. Shoving your fist in their whole
mouth is the best way of defending yourself if attacked. You'll end up subduing them while you get off
with only a few scratches. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

So, it's not much different from your standard house cat. It's just big enough that when you piss it off, it could easily kill you.

I actually had a friend who lived near a farm which cared for show animals, like lions. I don't know
he slept at night, because there would be roaring and other noises. I told him , "How you do it,
I'll never know", but he just said he got used to it and didn't think much of it. I find it difficult
to believe, as they could break out at any time and you would never know, but maybe that's just me.

Isn't it a little absurd that many films begin with a large cat yelling into our faces. It's a complete non-sequitur that we just take for granted because we've seen it so long. Imagine walking into a bank or something and there's just a screen with a bear that yells into your face as you walk in the front door. And the bank people would just be like "Yeah, that's our logo."

It's something I see almost every day, but I never thought about them actually filming it.

I like how the mic is set up right in front of the lion's face, like the lion is about to read a news report over the radio or something.

And I think this every time I see a picture form the 1920s, but damn, people dressed up back then. Dress shirts and newsboy hats just to film a lion. People are going to look at pictures of the present day and think we were all a bunch of slobs.

Gay's Lion Farm- El Monte, CA http://www.image-archeology.com/Gay's_Lion_Farm_CA.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gay's_Lion_Farm

"Gay's Lion Farm was a public selective breeding facility and tourist attraction located at the south-east junction of Peck Road and Valley Boulevard in El Monte, California. It operated from 1925 through 1942, when it was closed temporarily due to wartime meat shortages. It was never reopened."
