All puns aside, this is beautiful, terrifying, and extremely moving. I've seen this image hundreds of times, but you have managed to make it affect me as if I'd never seen it before.

Happy to hear that! It's what I was aiming for. :)

The emotion and the look on the face of the monk on the very far right says it all. A meritorious effort btw.

I was thinking the same thing, and that I would love to see other historically iconic b&w photo's colored as well.

[–]TheLaughingGod 2 points3 points ago

Watch World War II in color on the Military Channel. Its video footage of the war colored and its very moving. It puts a whole new light onto the face of the war.

[–]just_a_french_guy 50 points51 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree with that, it's a great job. And even a little more than that. But I think you could make the car a little less saturated, it's so blue it distracts the eye from the monk.

But what do I know I'm just a french guy who loves to practice dipterosodomy (the art of sodomizing flies) (I just realize that I don't know if you guys from the other side of the great blue ocean use this expression???)

[–]archiesteel 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think that expression (enculer les mouches) is used in English. There's "splitting hairs" (couper les cheveux en quatre) and "nitpicking" (not sure what a nit is...)

Too bad, I really like the original expression. Maybe I'll start using it in English to help spread it around: "hey you, stop butt-fucking flies!"

[–]Nur_Ein_Mann 6 points7 points ago

That looks more like a painting to me.

[–]Yazan24 12 points13 points ago

It is spectacular, I also agree that the blue should be a little less distracting, also a lighter blue would be more historically accurate.

That would be my only comment as well; the car is a bit too pastel and saturated. Other than that, it is nearly photorealistic coloring. Well done.

[–][deleted] 134 points135 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Perhaps there is some explanation of how this is possible, but I think the much more likely situation is that, because of his cultural and perhaps religious significance, it was decided he should be mythologized.

Actually I think it was some discovery channel show where they attempt to bust myths, or something. It was in the context of several historical figures who were burned to death, but their hearts survived; Joan of Arc and several other saints iirc.

[–]turambar 5 points6 points ago

The human heart is a solid hunk of wet muscle. Meat doesn't burn very well.

Edit: It's normal for the heart to not burn during cremation, I believe. During a second one is unusual, but not impossible.

Alternately, you could accept it as a miracle.

[–]MahBoy 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Was going to post that, but I saw that you already did.

The colors we see when the image turns from color to greyscale are the complements, or opposites, of the original colors. When the eye sees a color, it is widely theorized that it also sees the color's complement. For instance, the car in the retouched image is blue but when the image turns to greys the eye sees orange in its place.

tl;dr: Eye sees color and its opposite; that's what happens here.

The fact that it is so blatantly offensive is what makes it hilarious.

[–]Zackismet 36 points37 points ago*

I'm not sure that it's hilarious because it's offensive, I think it's just two iconic images and extremely creative which makes it hilarious.

Side note, I think it's important that we don't hold anything so sacred that it must be exempt from parody. Once we start down that road there's really no way to draw a line and not be hypocritical.

Photoshop CS 5, and tablet. Used Brush Tool with mode set to Colour, entered quick mode (Q) sometimes to make finer selections eg. the fire which I then used Gradient Map on. I think that's it. :]

Approx 4 hrs

[–][deleted] 375 points376 points ago*

  • The colors are a bit oversaturated throughout.

  • Objects should appear bluer and greyer the farther they are from the camera. The green foliage in the background is much too green. The robes of background monks are too orange.

  • Shaded areas should be much, much bluer than anything lit by daylight. You should add a blue layer and paint in all the shadows, especially ground shadows and the folds in the orange robes.

  • The fire is a little too red and not enough yellow near the fuel source.

  • The fire should also cast orange light on the ground and nearby objects. But don't overdo it. The side of the gas can facing the flames should be quite orange, and the car should be getting some of that orange light as well.

  • Tone down the car color. It grabs too much focus.

That being said, you did an awesome job. This is excellent work.

[–][deleted] 126 points127 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also, be sure to add a layer of color noise above everything else. Create a 50% grey layer and add a noise filter (uncheck monochromatic) at 100% strength. Put a 1 pixel median filter on the noise. Set the blending mode to Color, then play with the opacity (5% - 10% is probably where you'll want to be). This will decrease the overall saturation too. Hopefully the noise will make your colorization seem more natural.

One more piece of advice: Remember that everything in the scene casts color on everything else. If that blue car were in the sun, it will reflect blue light on everything near it. You can't just think of "blue object", "green object", "orange object". Everything colors everything else. The effect can be subtle, but without it your subconscious kind of goes "what's wrong with this picture?"

[–]cusoman 39 points40 points ago

[–]Mpoumpis 6 points7 points ago

Oh, I see the difference.

I just changed to cleartype from the display properties, I can't decide if I like it better like this or without cleartype . It seems kinda "foggy" from time to time.

Is cleartype considered better?

[–][deleted] 30 points31 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Cleartype uses subpixels (red/green/blue dots that make up one pixel on your screen) to render text at higher resolutions, giving more fidelity to rounded corners and such.

It's a matter of personal preference, but greatly increases readability of small fonts, and makes big fonts overall nicer.

Just let it stay on for about a week, then switch it off to see how horrible text looks without it.

Also, setting your browsers default font to a cleartype font can help loads.

[–]laketrout 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also, if you're going to use cleartype, don't forget about fine tuning it with the tuner. http://www.microsoft.com/typography/cleartype/tuner/step1.aspx

[–]shodanx 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

cleartype is not the same as font anti-aliasing

cleartype is subpixel imaging, it only work if you have the right triad pattern (depends if you have a shadow mask or aperture grill crt or a lcd)

anti-aliasing blurs out the staircase effect by blending adjacent entire pixels together

[–]cultcirca 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's considered better in the sense that the font is smoother and easier to read to most people. I for one have anti-aliasing turned off along with most features on my laptop to gain any little speed i can out of it.

[–]ffffuuuuManChu 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It also lowers the contrast a little.

Makes it easier on the eyes. Think of of tiring it would be to read a real book if it was printed on paper as white as the white of the reddit background? Bah!

[–]kylegetsspam 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It will take you a day or so to get used to anti-aliased text display. It will look blurry at first and the part of your brain that rejects change will scream and whine for you to change it back.

Stick with it, though, and your computering experience will be vastly improved and you'll wonder how you ever got along without it.

Isn't that a double entendre and not a pun?

[–]blargh9001 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They're not mutually exclusive. The distinction is that puns are supposed to be humerous, while double entendres are usually 'risqué'

pun

  1. the humorous use of a word or phrase so as to emphasize or suggest its different meanings or applications, or the use of words that are alike or nearly alike in sound but different in meaning; a play on words.

  2. the word or phrase used in this way.

double entendre

  1. a double meaning.
  2. a word or expression used in a given context so that it can be understood in two ways, esp. when one meaning is risqué.

It's pretty good, but:

  • Almost everything is way too saturated (especially things at a distance);
  • You used the same orange colour throughout the shot;
  • You use solid colour fills. In real life, colours will mix and bleed and run all across the gamut. Blue is never "just blue" and orange is never "just orange". Doing it that way creates a comic book feel. But doing it right takes a lot of work, because you essentially need to learn color theory and how to paint.

Incredible job, however the road sign really stands out as strange for me. I guess you're american as you've coloured the sign in green - however, the chances are it was probably blue. Also the girder structure it stands on looks far too red, it was probably just rusted rather than painted.

sorry if the criticism comes off negative, be assured I'm amazed at the job you did :>

"I was to see that sight again, but once was enough. Flames were coming from a human being; his body was slowly withering and shriveling up, his head blackening and charring. In the air was the smell of burning human flesh; human beings burn surprisingly quickly. Behind me I could hear the sobbing of the Vietnamese who were now gathering. I was too shocked to cry, too confused to take notes or ask questions, too bewildered to even think... As he burned he never moved a muscle, never uttered a sound, his outward composure in sharp contrast to the wailing people around him."

--David Halberstam

"Before closing my eyes and moving towards the vision of the Buddha, I respectfully plead to President Ngo Dinh Diem to take a mind of compassion towards the people of the nation and implement religious equality to maintain the strength of the homeland eternally. I call the venerables, reverends, members of the sangha and the lay Buddhists to organise in solidarity to make sacrifices to protect Buddhism."

He was 67 year old Zen master who had been training Zen since he was seven years old (Vietnamese Zen is called Thiền).

Buddhists think that while mental and physical pain is unavoidable, suffering is not. Pain is sensation. Suffering is reflexive reaction to that sensation, "I do not want experience this". If you learn to accept any sensation you experience, you are free from suffering. Thich Quang Duc had been training whole his life of being aware here and now and not avoiding any feelings or sensations that come up. It's not surprising that he had some mastery over his mind.

Affirming Faith In Mind

[–]chuckDontSurf 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, but still, he was on fucking fire.

Seriously though, even with his lifetime of training, it's still mind-blowing. We're not talking about some mastery of his mind. We're talking about mastery over every human instinct to stay alive and avoid pain. No, not just pain--probably one of the most painful things you can experience. And to be fully accepting of that to the point where you don't even react is just incredible.

I'm a somewhat experienced meditator, and I learned to be able to accept some amount of pain while sitting. Theoretically you can extrapolate that out such that if you continue to develop mindfulness deeper and deeper, you can be open to greater amounts of pain. But the pain you must feel being burnt alive, and not even to react to it is just mind-boggling.

It's interesting that in a country with 90% Buddhists they were oppressed by a radical fundamentalist Roman Catholic president. I understand rulers being evil and crazy, but in this case there are additional factors, at any time the Pope could have publicly disavowed the Vietnamese actions, announcing that Catholicism does not teach the oppression of people and the Vietnamese President was not representing Catholicism correctly. Because this announcement was never made, it seems likely that the message is that Catholicism does in fact teach the oppression of people, and support despotic tyrants in their schemes, as long as they are Catholic. (Yes I realize the long history, but this happened in the modern supposedly more enlightened time.)

Excellent work. If I was to REALLY nit pick for perfection I would:

Show the reflection of the fire on the wet parts of the ground. The tones in the grey image would not have shown the detail but it would have been there. http://www.loupiote.com/photos/26781612.shtml http://www.corbisimages.com/images/67/739221A2-2EA6-426C-9762-A6E156C5C515/42-21876379.jpg

Add some illumination from the fire on the ground and the man. It currently looks like two separate elements (a fire and a ground) instead of them being together in the same environment. http://www.moneyfingersinc.com/wp-content/uploads/ablaze.jpg

Add some discolouration to the fire burning the clothes. The same tonal value of grey may not have shown the orange turning brownish as it burns. http://i.ytimg.com/vi/7AdZHI9Bpnk/0.jpg

the smoke has some redness from the fire, but it looks like its all slightly red. Keep the warm tones right next to the flame and then reduce the saturation as it rises. http://www.rendallscleaning.com/images/smoke-damage-restoration.jpg http://www.kevinwilliampang.com/wp-content/uploads/Smoke.jpg

The blue on the car is a little flat (like the whole car was hue saturated to blue). Its missing the subtle colour tones from the reflected environment. The car wont be just shades of blue (like the underside will get a little of the browinsh grey from the road, and the front metal and lights would have pings of orange from the crowd. The chrome trim would also have little hits of orange to really pull the elements together. The colour itself is very bold, and draws the eye away from the point of focus. maybe tone it back a little, but dont flatten the tones. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3001/3019943673_9be7b201f2.jpg http://www2.2space.net/images/upl_news/101219/1292751003.jpg

the light blue tshirt in the background really drew my eye. maybe adjust the saturations a little as the photo recedes.

The orange clothes are all very even. like they are all new. Give them a little variation of fading and slight orange shifts. It may already be there, but they all look very close. http://www.france24.com/en/files/imagecache/aef_ct_wire_image/images/afp/photo_1272510021560-1-0.jpg

Yes, I realise that my points are really picky, and the colourisation that you have done looks fantastic. (If you hadn't guessed, yes I work in effects)

Overall, great stuff.

[–]supremanade 45 points46 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Very well done, but imo it should be slightly less saturated. Also, the flames should lighten the ground around themselves slightly. That would take a bit thinking how to make it though, but now the flames look like they are shopped in it.

[–]huxtiblejones 27 points28 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, if the ground was being lit up by light, you would see it in the black and white.

http://www.insurancetipstoday.com/images/burning_car.JPG

In this photo of a burning car, do you see the fire lighting up the ground? This would really only happen in a very dark scenario, but in broad daylight, it's sort of like shining a flashlight. You just don't see it.

It is very unlikely that the value of glowing light matches the exact value of the ground it's sitting on. If the light was shining on the ground, we would perceive it in the black and white.

I also wanted to let you know that I practice under a Buddhist monk who comes from the same lineage as Thich Quang Duc. As a matter of fact, my Dharma name shares the same surname. So, in other words, we are from the same Buddhist family.

I'm going to forward this to my temple's master. I think he would appreciate seeing that someone still remembers his brother's sacrifice.

[–]Pomnom 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well done. I can't say much about the photoshop aspect (saturation, reflection, etc) but about the color of objects: * A monk use the same robe (more or less) throughout his life, so normally the younger ones will have brighter robe and older ones will have darker robes.
* The pole and road signs and the wall color was wrong. They're all blue (I've been there). Red poles are only for train signs. Road signs should be white on blue as well. Also there's a small part(above to the right of his car), those are tin (same as the roof) and not wall.
* I see you leave the smoke in BW, which somehow turns out to be correct. That traffic light pole should be white, and it is white in your pic.
Overall, that's very good. You almost fooled me :)

I still think, normally this would make headline news. Of course I have no say on what is news and what is not news, but the act of suicide has always been a complex one, and as Durkheim explained, it is not solely a selfish act. I see it usually as the result of certain pressures pushing a human to go to the ultimate limit of voluntary death. When the act of suicide is also used to convey a message to society, I think it's pretty big in itself.

These people who immolated themselves were not crazy, deluded people. They had the rationale and wanted to tell people something, that they felt could only be delivered with a shock. Unfortunately the media does not comply.

"What is one more life thrown away in this sad and useless national tragedy?" he wrote. "If one death can atone for anything, in any small way, to say to the world: I apologize for what we have done to you, I am ashamed for the mayhem and turmoil caused by my country."

Yet some people1 consider this a selfish, stupid act. Maybe in terms of human survival can suicide take a place in the Hall of Shame, but there is more to suicide than what may seem just a mundane, useless, un-needed thing to do.

[–]rolfedh 2 points3 points ago

The colors are striking at first, particularly the flames, increasing the impact of the "bonzo" = a Buddhist monk self immolating in protest. Then gradually, un-natural aspects of the coloration become distracting and take away from the content. Patches of blue on the asphalt foreground. The uniformity of the orange in the robes. The impossible brightness of the car. The photo and the color hides or distracts you from truth. Who among you knows correctly what he was protesting and when?

My father served in Viet Nam. He has an almost identical picture to this classic. I thought he had been present and took his picture from a few feet away as the photos looked very similar. My father has many pictures leading up to, during and after the burning. The after pics are pretty grisly. He told me that the burning he attended was another monk and that the monks in Vietnam at the time were setting themselves on fire it seemed, almost every week. The government was so repressive that the monks were protesting by setting themselves ablaze. This was the beginning of the end for the regime and one of the many reasons the US supported Diem's assasination--everyone hated him.
