"Related" means that posts must contain gaming-related content in the link/post body, not just a "forced" connection via the title or a caption added to the content.

Posting Rules

  • Posts must be directly gaming-related. Thus, "generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission; similarly, reaction GIFs are also not appropriate as submissions.

  • No "general" URL shorteners (bitly, tinyurl, etc). Single-site URL shorteners (such as youtu.be or fav.me) are allowed.

  • No game or product giveaway of any kind

  • Spoilers can be posted using the following formatting:
    [X Kills Y](/spoiler)

  • To mark a spoiler as relevant to a specific game/topic, use the alternate formatting:
    [Player 1 wins](/spoiler "Pong")
    Result:
    Player 1 wins

  • Report posts containing spoilers not using the above method

  • Don't post users' personal information.

I love that if you set everything to max. in UT2k4, the game plays a voice clip yelling: "holy shit".

I laughed far too hard the first time I heard it.

Its actually done that since the original UT. I was t he only one of my friends that could do that with my schnazzy 128mb ATI 8800 LE or whatever it was.

I pulled it off with my Voodoo 3 3500 TV card back in 99.

1mb matrox card :-( I was ripped off by PC world with a "mermaid" computer. On the other hand, I learned so much fixing that thing all the time.

I can attribute most of my technician skills to a terrible (absolutely terrible) packard bell 486 dx2 that broke down more than I care to forgive.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yup, I owned an Apple IIe for 5 years and didn't learn a thing. I owned a 486 for 5 years and learned pretty much everything I needed about troubleshooting a PC.

[–]tg989 3 points4 points ago

You don't learn anything on an Apple (except maybe bsd).

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

Banshee were one of the first cards with 2d/3d right? I remember trying to save up the cash to buy one, never did though.

I had some Diamond Stealth 1MB card, eventually upgraded to a ATI 3D Charger 4MB.

Ahh, good ol' Monster 3D.

I still have my Voodoo video card boxes just for novelty. Plus I happen to have all the mouse pad designs from the three lines of Voodoo3/4/5 cards. Blue Purple and Green. Anywho, the other day I whipped out my blue 3dfx mouse pad and someone said. "Oh you like Avatar?!" and I said, "bs, I like it, but Avatar stole its shit from Voodoo!" then I proceeded to point out the 3dfx logo at the bottom of my 3m voodoo mousepad.

:sniffles: I so miss 3dfx. I went through my business card collection last week, and I still have 3dfx cards from 3 reps.. memories... LoL

HOoooooooollllyyyyyy Shiiiiiiiiitttt. Dommiiiiiiinating! HHHHHEADDD SHOT. M-m-m-monster Kill

Spent countless hours on UT99, a little on ut2k4. For some reason now I really want to play UT3, it's $15 on steam for the whole Unreal pack... but I already own all the games in the series I just want UT3.

[–]swuboo 47 points48 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

UT99 ruined me for shooters for years. I got so deep into that game that I couldn't function in an FPS without jumping around like a deranged jackrabbit afraid of the ground. My sensitivity was so high that lifting the mouse would send me into a nine hundred degree freespin.

Man, the completely uninteresting stories I could tell...

[–]P-Dub 4 points5 points ago

UT or Quake, never known someone that went nuts for both. Always one or the other.

[–]rezanow 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I loved them both. Quake was my first. I found UT to be a bit too fast paced for my slow reactions. Loved playing with the AI set to scale.

Way back when I was running a Pentium 233, running Quake in DOS...

[–]MsgGodzilla 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

People looks back on Quake more fondly but UT was the superior game. IMO.

[–]ronintetsuro 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This. Quake remains the competitive arena, but for the rest of us that just wanted to have a blasty time, UT was the choice of the connoisseur.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I disagree. Watch a 1v1 pro fight on UT99, then one on Quake.

UT's movement was far less interesting.

[–]weez09 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

2k4 movement was a lot cooler to watch

[–]caliform 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I played UT99 first, then Quake 3 and ended up loving both. They're completely different games.

[–]lordnecro 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

UT3 is similar yet nothing like UT99/2k4 unfortunately. They managed to alienate their entire previous PC player base with the changes in UT3, then somehow blamed the PC users despite providing a half-assed console port. I loved UT99 and helped run a very popular UT2k4 server... but UT3 was a disappointment.

The links to the patches are both broken. Anywhere we can get them now? And do the GOG versions support this mod?

Edit: It does work with the GOG versions, which are also already patched up to date.

Edit2: It installed correctly with the GOG versions, but it seems to require the ToB disc. I can't seem to find a fix for it, looks like the only option might be torrenting it.

[–]slick3333 1 point2 points ago

I have tried it yes, and I have tried playing Baldur's Gate thanks to everyone's enthusiasm on this site. What I could get over, was how all my guys keep getting one or two hits and die, or how I have to sleep each time I want to cast a spell :S I must be playing the game wrong, because it was extremely frustrating constantly loading so these party members I found wouldn't die all the time :(

[–]Reddit4LifeDawg 5 points6 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, I certainly applaud anyone wanting to nostalgia a hundred times, but take it from this old retro rat, I've spent my entire adult life reminiscing from my childhood, and nostalgia like this one can do more harm than good.

If you nostalgia for one game (and that's all Descent is, one game), you're setting yourself up for sadness the road. I've seen it a hundred times.

To turn on those graphics, it's like putting a powerful engine in a stock Toyota Tercel. What will you accomplish? You'll blow out the drive train, the clutch, the transmission, etc., because those factory parts aren't designed to handle the power of an engine much more powerful than the factory installed graphics engine.

Nostalgia basically only trains someone to only like old games. What you really want to do is play old games, but also try some newer games (shooters, RPG's, puzzles) at the same time, over the course of a gaming session. And don't forget your Farmville Farm!

I'm proud of you guys for reminiscing over Descent. Three cheers! Falling in love with Descent, Space Orbs, etc., is one of the greatest things you can do for yourself. And you WILL fall in love with it if you can just force yourself to stick with it for the first level or two experience the amazing progress you'll make.

But do it right, okay?

My advice, find a good computer, with updated drivers who will play your programs for you (especially in the beginning, until you get the hang of it yourself) and guide you in your quest to save the universe. Thirty to 45 minutes a day, three days a week, is all you'll ever need to do (I refuse to believe anyone is so busy that he or she cannot make time for that, especially considering how important it is).

And don't worry about being embarrassed at not being leet the first time you die. You have to start somewhere and almost every one of us were there ourselves at one time. So no one will say anything to you and very, very quickly you will progress way beyond that stage anyway.

Now get out there and do it! :-)

Make sure to turn off the 3D animations. They cause a lot of issues in the newer windows systems.

IPS panels have a far faster response time than they used to. My panel is based on H-IPS from a year or so ago now, it has a perfectly acceptable rt. Newer versions have even better rt's.

[–]1000 4 points5 points ago

I still have a CRT. They're getting really expensive now though, so I fear when this one goes I'll have to make the switch to glorified laptop screen. Or maybe it'll hold out 'till OLED is a reasonable price.

[–]Manisil 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I dont understand this comment. Crts are not better than LCDs at all. Maybe in a gun fight or a battle, but thats hardly ever the case. Not only are they massive and heavy, once they get a little old they start making that annoying bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz sound that older people cant hear, and i dont even want to think about the radiation your face is getting bombarded with.

[–]jftitan 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

hey I like my refresh rates being over 80hz. although I did have a AOC 21" monitor that pulled 100hz and I never noticed a damn difference other than... "smooooth"

Now I'm seeing LCD TVs and so forth having selling points of "The difference between 60hz and 120hz is AMAZING BUY THIS TV OR BE A LUSER FOR LIFE"

Honestly, I've been so pissed at how marketing and manufactures bullshit the consumer its just annoying to go to a best buy these days.

"marketing works, because I still want one of those new fangled 120hz TVs"

[–]byproxy 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Set your LCD background to "black" in the dark and notice that it's really "dark blue."

[–]ggggggggggggggg 10 points11 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Maybe in a gun fight or a battle, but thats hardly ever the case.

Yeah, that like never happens in a video game.

Not only are they massive and heavy, once they get a little old they start making that annoying bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz sound that older people cant hear

Sure, those are the drawbacks and they might matter to some people.

Crts are not better than LCDs at all

Demonstrably false. One way in which CRTs are better is response time. Try not to speak in absolutes -- you'll end up looking like a fool.

and i dont even want to think about the radiation your face is getting bombarded with.

More like "i dont even want to think," eh. There's nothing dangerous about CRTs.

[–]chalfont_alarm 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I liked Counterstrike 1.6 at 100Hz (and by extension, 100 fps). It was very shiny. Most LCDs are capped out at 60Hz, which isn't quite as perky.

Unfortunately whenever I mention this, people who Did Not Do The Research tell me the human eye can't see more than 30fps, or something.

Spoiler - it can.

Buy a big CRT television. They're dirt cheap, if not free these days. Look on craigslist; people will give them to you free if you're willing to drag it out of their house. Bring help.

[–]antdude 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How about new ones? Also, CRT monitors. I still prefer CRT for the colors too.

[–]1000 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

CRT is the superior technology for monitors, but they're getting expensive right now. No one makes value CRT monitors any more - because you buy a value LCD screen - so most of the decent ones are several hundred £s more expensive than a similar resolution LCD.

Luckily old ones are still just as good as they used to be, and so long as there's no burnt out tubes in the back then you're good to go in seconds. Protip: They're free if you go to the dump.

You can get a 21" trinitron for around $100 these days. Which, having bought one 12 years ago, just really freaks me out.

Sure, they are Gigantic. But a high-dollar CRT is so much better, in almost all ways, than a LCD.....

[–]antdude 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

For new ones? Where?

[–]tg989 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I remember buying a 19" LCD to replace my 22" trini and returning it the next day... that was when LCD's were rediculously expensive and response times were in the 25ms range... not ideal for gaming.

2048x1536 @ 120hz and 120fps... doesn't get more responsive than that.

[–]Rocco03 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't have to. I work with an LCD but I game with a good old CRT.

[–]partysnatcher 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I miss CRTs, where response time was nanoseconds rather than milliseconds.

[–]bostonmolasses 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The refresh rate on crt was still milliseconds. Its just that most of them refreshed below the threshold of what most people could consciously detect.

[–]partysnatcher 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Misunderstanding: I'm talking about response time, the average time it takes each component to change color to the other side of the spectrum.

In LCD/TFT, this is very slow; you can try it out by grabbing a window on your desktop and dragging it calmly from side to side; the window title text will blur/smear quite easily (it will not on a CRT).

[–]bostonmolasses 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

oh i understand. i just thought you meant refresh rate.

i had to learn far to much about crt monitors in grad school. i designed a backward masking paradigm where i had to have the monitor write an image and wipe it within one refresh cycle. lcd is horrible for anything fast.

With the resolution patcher you most certainly can.

When you're talking monitors, "finest" takes on a more literal meaning.

This should be a lesson to all game designers. ALWAYS keep future resolutions in mind.

But then you would have an infinitely long list of resolutions available, you would scroll down as long as the universe exists, never reaching the end, and think 'fuck it'.... choose a 'bajillion x googol' resolution... and your monitor would melt

[–]wtf_apostrophe 27 points28 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Or just get a list of the available resolutions from the OS, which is what they appear to do now.

[–]jaegerjaquez50 0 points1 point ago

I don't understand why games don't just let you type in your resolution yourself. It'd save so much trouble.

Go!

Define a minimum resolution? Upscaling the HUD shouldn't be a problem...

The aspect ratio is the problem.

Does this game run on windows 7 64 bit ? Ive wanted to give it a go for years but heard it is finicky with certain systems.

[–]0rgasm0tr0n[S] 8 points9 points ago

I'm using 64-bit Windows 7 and it doesn't run well. Crashes frequently, but I haven't had much time to play it anyway so I haven't bothered searching for any fixes.

Well, one. I should have played this a decade ago, there is a big empty spot where the nostalgia should be

Aw, that reminds me of FF7. I borrowed a playstation to play it on... got 60 pages through the 64 page walkthrough (wasnt cheating, was playing then 'reading back' to see if i'd missed anything important) then my friend wanted his playstation back >:(

So a few months later, borrowed another playstation, this time played it forewarned, had an UBER party, and had to give it back... right in the same place, arrgh. I never got to find out how it ended

You know how many times final bosses have multiple forms/stages? The very very final fight surprised me and I thought it was an appropriate finish to the game. Highly recommend finishing, even if you have to look up youtube vids (although ps2s are like what, 20 bucks used nowadays right)

I think the only game I've ever beaten with a 25+ hour length before was Final Fantasy IV (the only Final Fantasy I've ever beaten). RPG's are just too goddamn long.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, I got to the last dungeon of Secret of Mana, but never beat it. Oh yeah, I also did beat Mass Effect, which is 25+ hours. Most of the games I've beaten in my life are old nostalgic classics I forced myself to beat because I played it as a kid and never finished it.

I've only finished a few games in my life.

I tend to blame that more on padding than my own issues. A lot of games seem to just go with the need to be really long, even if the gameplay to support entertainment for that extended period isn't there. It's one of the great things about portal. Short game, that they actually released as a short game rather than trying to make it a multi-month epic. And they wound up with something people are still buying.

Until very recently I was running on some old terrible hardware and one the reasons I loved games like Baldur's Gate was being able to feel like I had a powerful machine turning all the options up and activating these "experimental" features for powerful machines.

[–]mMelatonin 1 point2 points ago

I first had to play this game on a Compaq Presario. We already had a pretty nice Mac so my ma was unwilling to pay much for a functional PC. That was when I was 14; ten years later I still don't have a functional PC, but my Macbook has bootcamp. I installed BGII and nearly cried when it worked without turning the settings all the way down. Maybe ten years from now I'll be caught up on PC games that are out today...

[–]jerubal 1 point2 points ago

I installed Final Fantasy 7 recently to see if it was like back in the '98, and it told me to beware because it used 'cutting edge 3d graphics' that most PCs couldn't handle. I was like 'eyyy'.

I don't know why, but I'm oddly impressed by you saying 'eeeeyyyy' to your computer. I assume in the manner of the fonz. I may or may not be stealing that idea.

Funny, I am a huge fan of GOG, but they didn't fix this. They only really work on making sure the game starts on recent Windows versions and let you mod the game for high resolutions.

I'm pretty sure if you email them they'll have a go at fixing it, they're normally pretty good at that sorta stuff!

They mean it when they say that. There's all sorts of incompatability issues that make the game crash and stuff with those higher resolutions. Plus, everything becomes so small that it is hard to make out what is going on. Best to experience this superb game in all its low res glory.

I've been installing a lot of old games the past month or so. From gog and otherwise. I've gotten immense satisfaction from all the programs telling me what a badass my computer is. Well, except for the ones that tell me my computer is too crappy, because it's outside the bounds of what they're checking for. Context, oddly, doesn't seem to matter much. I just get :D or D: based on what the program comments about.

Was just advising my cousin on his solo no reloads run this week. I highly recommend no reloads ("hardcore") style play - BG is already the most strategically complex single player RPG out there, and playing on no reloads adds significant depth.

My computer died on Xmas eve and I've had to make an emergency one out of ancient bits from the junk box and a questionable copy of XP. None of my games will run on it. So I installed Baldur's Gate and the installer doesn't believe that my disk can possibly be as big as 40GB.
