I had more trouble with step 3. On step 5 all you do is pull out/up the top edge. It won't be flat, but once you get to the next step it will be.

you kind of just have to play with it a bit. The only important part that comes from part 3 is getting the bill of the hat to pop out, after that you can just bunch up the bill any way you want to get it to frame the left of his face
