"...fired..." Approval.

[–]gid13 39 points40 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As much as I'm glad that they were fired, it seems to me that beating someone in that condition should really qualify as assault. And that maybe police convicted of assault should face even more serious penalties than everyone else.

It's odd in some ways; I think police need to be able to cause harm to people while they're endangering others, and as such I may well have been okay with them, say, ramming his car to stop the chase. However, they need to be able to recognize when someone is not a threat, and restrain themselves accordingly.

[–]chobi83 23 points24 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you read the article and watch the video, it says that the cops are likely to face criminal charges...and according to the speakers, it's not looking well for the cops since they were fired "within hours" of the video coming to light.

It seems as if the mayor of Birmingham frowns upon this kind of behavior by cops, as he was himself a victim of similar behavior in his past.

[–]junkit33 12 points13 points ago

This isn't over for the cops yet - the guy will likely win a huge settlement over this.

[–]lolocoster 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm just impressed that the guy is alive, if he can walk or do anything of his own motor abilities he just may be one of the luckiest people I've ever seen. I'm an EMT, and I see car crashes much less violent than this where a person sustains life threatening spinal injuries, but this man surpassed them all.

He was ejected from a car which was going at an extremely high velocity (60+ mph likely), rolled over and hit his head. Following that, he was beaten with clubs while unconscious on the ground.

When I see anyone in half as bad an accident like this, I have to ensure that their spinal mobility is limited so they don't end up in a wheelchair for the rest of their life. But the cops not only didn't stabilize C-spine, they wrecked it.

[–]senatortruth 3 points4 points ago

Beating an unconscious individual should constitute attempted murder. Even assault is too lenient.

[–][deleted] 1153 points1154 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i love the comments: "if someone in YOUR family was almost run over, i bet you'd do the same thing!"

actually, no. if someone in my family was almost run over, i would not become part of a mob savagely beating an unconscious man with clubs. i really cannot imagine any circumstance that would cause me to beat an unconscious man with a club, much less join in along with a bunch of other guys stomping, kicking and beating an unconscious man on the ground.

i guess that's one of the main reasons i never went into law enforcement; the culture that beats unconscious men with clubs and stomps on their limp bodies is pretty foreign to me.

[–]BonesJustice 661 points662 points ago

if someone in YOUR family was almost run over, i bet you'd do the same thing!

Let's say I did. What would happen to me? I'd be held accountable. Why shouldn't the police be held accountable too?

[–]Bloqhead 429 points430 points ago

I'm sure all of them will get a week's suspension with pay. What a fucking joke.

EDIT: I stand corrected. According to the article Hippocrap posted all of the officers were fired. Fired is acceptable as a first step. Anyone else that did such a thing though would be slapped with criminal charges.

General population.

[–]ZanThrax 89 points90 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I got no argument with these guys going to prison for assault, but the "gen pop" argument is the moral equivalent of the "federal rape me in the ass prison" being advocated for other criminals.

[–]nickE 50 points51 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

actually it's battery not assault because there was no apprehension (the guy was unconscious).

/lawnerd

[–][deleted] 85 points86 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If cops start getting sentenced to general population prisons, that's some incentive for the people who run them to clean them up. Prisoners should be safe. Having to constantly fear for your safety is a completely disproportionate punishment for the vast majority of crimes.

[–]dec0o 66 points67 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How about call for prison reform regardless?

[–]cicoffv 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How effective has that been so far?

[–]TruthWillSetYouFree 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So you think cops deserve special treatment just because they're cops? Maybe I just don't understand what you're saying, but that's the way I interpreted it.

I don't see the connection you're trying to make. I don't advocate "federal rape me in the ass prison" for anyone, but I don't advocate separating cops from the general population either. Cops should be treated just the same as anyone else, if anything they need to be held more responsible for their actions than the average person because of the power and authority they are granted.

[–]ZanThrax 21 points22 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, I think that in the US prison system as it currently exists, cops in gen pop will get murdered. Putting someone in a situation where their lives are in danger is not an acceptable decision. Ideally, prisons should be far less crowded, far less corrupt, and generally safer places so that not only could cops (and other convicts who get put in protective custody) be kept in general population, but the idea that going to maximum security prison is likely to involve repeated violent anal rape would be seen as morally reprehensible, instead of an almost desirable element of the penal system.

[–]poqwuk 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Perhaps the call for putting them in general population is not intended as pro-inhumane-treatment, but instead as anti-special-treatment.

[–]xployt 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree, however that'd never fucking fly. Fucking precious cops. Despite what they tell us, they don't have the same laws we do.

[–]elvispt 132 points133 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Fired is not enough.

I believe that everyone should respect the law enforcement agents and they should be well paid, but when they break the very laws they swore to defend their penalty should be greater than those of a normal citizen.

[–]fishrobe 35 points36 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

or, fuck, at this point I'd take it if it was even the same as a normal citizen.

[–]fishrobe 5 points6 points ago

[–]reddler 7 points8 points ago

[deleted]

[–]ticklefights 31 points32 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

you are correct....this is a good start. If someone that was not in law enforcement did this they would see some time........and most people that are in jail don't keep their jobs......sooooo i think charges along with being fired is fair.

[–]Disgod 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It is only a good approach if they are also banned for life for getting another law enforcement position in another town/state. There are plenty of places that would probably still be willing to hire them even if they know about the cop's actions.

[–]aDildoAteMyBaby 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Then we need a front-and-center public forum for 'reviewing' individual officers, like with RateMyCop.com. I think other precincts should absolutely be able to hire cops with egg on their faces, but that reputation should not only follow them to the new department but leave an imprint on it, too. Maybe then we can target problem precincts in a quantifiable way, which would be the first step for a focused public outcry.

[–]Oroborus12 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Unfortunately, the only question a prospective employer can ask is "would you hire them again?", anything more than that is illegal, at least in the states.

[–]Levirules3 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree with the others. If it was, say, a garbage man who beat an unconscious dude with a club, the garbage man would get jail time and most certainly lose his job in the meantime. Why shouldn't the cops get both as well?

[–]throwaway-o 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ah... they were fired. If a peasant like you and me had done this, we'd be brutalized in prison for many years. Not just fired.

[–]bongozap 18 points19 points ago

I hate these false dichotomies. Conservatives use them all the time. For instance, if you criticize the response to 9/11, you'll often get: "Way to think about the victims, asshole!" or "What about the terrorists that did 9/11!?"

No, false. Illogical. There are not only two options in the situation. The man who almost ran over the police officer can be a criminal as well as the police who beat him while he was unconscious. They can both be wrong. They can both be criminals. You are allowed to scorn them both. You can disagree with both of them. You don't have to be on one side or the other. They're both assholes. Why does everything have to be about taking sides with these people?

Because most people don't think logically. That's why. And if, given the circumstances, you try to open their mind and try to discuss something logically, their mind react violently and generates a strong hate feeling against you for trying to be "the smart guy".

That's why education is so important.

What I love are the cries of "If it was your mother ..."

Just stop right there. It wasn't my mother or your mother. Maybe someone's father, but that information isn't available. There are all kinds of scenarios where maybe it could have been my mother and then maybe things would be different. But saying "What if ..." is just stupid because mere supposition about someone who clearly cannot commit the acts justifies nothing.

Yes, the guy hit a cop doing his duty and he will be charged accordingly. But nothing justifies what the police did to him while he was unconscious.

The firing was being merciful, in my opinion. The least that should have happened was charging them with assault and possibly attempted murder.

im sorry but those police should of put a bullet in the back of the head of the criminal.

Wtf is wrong with people

Some people have authoritarian-follower tendencies. This means they like simplicity. They want good guys versus bad guys, with zero shades of gray. More importantly, they want to be told who is good and who is bad. They don't want the mental struggle of having to figure it out themselves. Once they are told police=good, runner=bad, they are impervious to additional information.

Please don't think I'm just getting on a high horse and talking trash. Sociologists have studied this stuff. It's real.

That's a damn good question. According to this, they can't, at least in Dallas. It seems they could possibly get around it by turning their sirens off, though.

I went to high school with my neighbor.

He used to huff freon at parties.

I majored in Criminology at college.

When I found out he became a police officer I wanted to switch majors.

[–]Wepp 48 points49 points ago

I had a friend in junior high school who was always in trouble. He was just that sort of kid - he used to shoot birds from his window with a BB gun and threaten his parents with violence rather than being obedient. One day, he showed me the handgun he kept hidden under his dresser. We were about 14 years old. I asked him where he got the gun, and he explained he stole it while visiting a police station as part of the "Police Explorers Program" for children interested in learning about law enforcement.

Today, he is a cop.

[–]theowne 3 points4 points ago

The week he became a police officer for a small town (pop. 10k) he purchased an M-16 and modified it to make it fully automatic. He keeps it in the trunk of his cruiser. "You know, just in case."

No, I do not see a person like this changing or coming to a sudden realization that with great power comes great responsibility.

I did it a few times when I was about 14 and I'm not dead. YMMV.

Freon just puts your mind into a loop and has about the same effect as sulfur hexafluoride on your voice.

One trip, everything went black. A toy jack-in-the-box appears. Out pops Jack and he starts flopping back and forth in a wildly exaggerated motion. While this is going on I hear: whackada whackada whackada whackada...

Another time I was standing outside next to this girl sitting on the trunk of a car. I start huffing, hand her the tank, then immediately fall face first into the gravel driveway. Then the loop effect kicks in and it feels like I keep hitting the ground, over and over. Wham! Wham! Wham! This trip had a looping sound track too. Though to this day, I can't describe what I heard.

This was so shocking and so appalling to me that I'm going to tell everyone on Reddit that we live in a police state like this. Then, I'm going to finish this comment and go back to watching The Walking Dead. Normally I try to look at police "brutality" objectively, as I realize that the police have dangerous jobs that put them in situations that are unbelievably stressful. I often receive copious downvotes for supporting the police when most of reddit jumps on the brutality bandwagon.

That said, this is completely uncalled for. The driver should've been charged with attempted murder, but he should also sue those police officers for everything they will ever earn.

[–]LennyPalmer 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Attempted murder nothing. From where I see it he didn't even intend to hit the officer, much less kill him. 'Almost manslaughter due to the victims own negligence' perhaps?

If I accidentally knock someone down 2 steps, and they hit the concrete, they could quite possibly have DIED. Is THAT attempted murder?

EDIT: I don't mean to say that what he didn't wasn't wrong, but attempted murder is when you attempt to murder someone.

[–]bolapara 11 points12 points ago

This deserves an upvote. I'm not saying ALL cops are bad, but I am saying that our police force is so badly trained and the level of professionalism is so low that this type of outcome in a situation like this is the NORM and not the exception as you would be led to believe.

The fact that violence seems to be ALWAYS an option for our police force now ensures that violence is the only option taken.

When they had only guns they used them (mostly) when their lives were threatened. Now the have tazers and batons and they are used in FAR more occasions than are necessary because they are not "deadly force" and apparently are now appropriate for any situation they want.

Something has to change.

Jesus Christ, if you are going to be a bunch of pricks at least learn to turn your car at an angle where your illegal activity can't be captured on tape. It's like mugging someone right under a surveillance camera...you know you are going to get caught so why even bother?

I doubt that the driver was attempting to hit or kill the officer. He was driving, at high speed, and suddenly a spike strip was laid in-front of him. The preservation of his vehicle was his highest priority, so he swerved around the strip where the officer happened to be.

At that speed, I very much doubt that he even saw the officer. I might even go so far to say that the officer made an error in standing right next to the strip.

He's still a reckless fucktard for leading a high speed chase though :p

[–]gid13 36 points37 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think it matters what he was attempting to do (at least, not until his trial). In my eyes, what matters (in terms of whether beating him is justifiable or not) is whether he was endangering others at the time he was being beaten. And that seems pretty clearly a no.

[–]gmorales87 24 points25 points ago

I once had a cop acquaintance. He explained to me one time that all chases end with the fleeing driver getting the shit beat out of him/her. He said it was because that kind of driving is a life or death thing for all involved, and causes the pursuing police officers to be overcharged with adrenaline - and they just have to "get it out". I'm dead serious about this.

And people wonder sometimes why I have such a low opinion of cops.

[–]mariox19 3 points4 points ago

I have a cop friend who told me once that people who try to run from the cops get some "schoolin'," as he called it. He didn't even try to rationalize it with the bullshit "life or death" spiel your friend attempted.
