        An opinion can't be wrong, but it can be invalid: in the obvious case, this is something like "In my opinion, Orville whistle-tuck skydiving monkey bottlecap." However, there are less self-evident cases, which are still equally invalid—like "In my opinion, there are supernatural things that people experience, but which science cannot, by its very nature, explain." Since science, by definition, is just "paying attention to your experiences to draw useful predictions from them", then anything that science cannot explain (predict) must not be able to be experienced. Thus, the opinion isn't a real statement about a possible way the world could be, but rather just a jumble of words.

        The notion of "opinion" tends to bleed over into the notion of "belief" in common usage. That is, "It is my opinion that" and "I believe that" are used interchangeably by most people, and I was using them in this loose manner above.

        So, to be more precise in my original statement: an opinion is invalid if it does not describe a preference between world-states; meanwhile, a belief is invalid if it does not express a likelihood of a world-state existing/coming to pass. But still, neither is valid if the words they use don't hold together as a logical statement.

          Not really, no. Science can only usefully discuss a certain set of things. It can only discuss phenomena that can be objectively measured, and it can only ask specific kinds of questions about those phenomena -- falsifiable statements about the measurements of the phenomena.

          There are certainly questions that can't easily be discussed by science, as the Mary's room discussion reveals.

          Virtually any discussion about conscious experience is off the scientific table. The only times the discussion becomes scientific is when some sort of survey/questionnaire (i.e. a measurement device) is introduced, but those are very crude tools that can only discuss what people think about their experience, not the actual experience itself.

          My risk games generally devolve to that even when not playing online. It's something to do with the rate of meaningful decisions over time. Losing is no problem, but losing for two hours in a row without any significant influence on the outcome makes for the most annoying game ever.

          I'd rather lose horribly at a 20 minute game where I can actually choose my actions than win gloriously at a two-hour one where the game plays me instead.

              As a PC gamer myself, (I joke about it being superior, but honestly I just play it because I'm a multitasker and like using ventrilo and being able to check reddit and shit while I play) this is the thing. I love mouse and keyboard a million times more than a controller, but man I wish I could lay on a couch and play my games. I'm sure there's a way I could set it up to do that, but that's work.

                Here's how I see it.

                Pros to gaming on a PC

                • Keyboard + Mouse is the most versatile control system, and you can also hook up a game pad if you so desire
                • The system was designed to be upgraded/fixed rather than having to buy a new one every generation or whenever it breaks (applies to desktop computers only, laptops are terrible gaming machines in general anyway)
                • Mods for games
                • Tons of free/cheap indie games
                • Easy piracy

                Pros to gaming on a console:

                • Multiplayer on one single system
                • Bigger screen generally
                • Less buggy, usually.
                • Innovative controls (Wii, Rock band-style games, etc)
                • Couch

                So, I use PC for most of my games, but my Wii for multiplayer party games or when I want to play with my wife. Well, I did, before it was broken by my dogs :/

                As I mentioned elsewhere in this thread, I like it just because I can multitask better.

                I have friends that I talk to on ventrilo. I like to be able to check my facebook and read reddit. Mods are a huge plus, especially for bethesda games. For FPS's, the mouse and keyboard is endlessly more accurate. Also, when my PC acts up, 90% of the time it's something I can fix myself. If my Xbox decides to bork then I probably have to send it in.

                I do wish I could play just laying down on the couch comfortable though.

                I prefer FPSes on a PC over a console because I'm really bad at playing them with a console controller. I played Doom, Quake, and Unreal before I had ever touched Goldeneye on the N64. I had the mouse and keyboard gameplay reflexes highly developed where my console FPS ones are sorely lacking. It ends up being a negative feedback loop too, I'm bad at console FPSes so I don't ever want to play them to get better. I also enjoy RTSes which I don't think can ever be done "properly" with a console controller. Beyond those two genres I have no problem playing games on consoles. Neither console or PC gaming is better in general but specific genres of games do lend themselves better to each.

                      I've unsubscribed from /r/gaming for the following reasons:

                      • the lack of contextual opinions of games

                      • overemphasis on console platform, despite they all pretty much have the same titles

                      • all conversations degrade to a "Mac/PC sucks" topic

                      • humoris links are the only popular ones. While I like zero punctuation, I can google it myself

                      This subreddit used to be so much more than it is today. Actually this trend has happened across the entire site. I've already unsubscribed from /r/reddit.com and other popular ones because of their vapid, pop orientated content.
