Beware of trading scammers!

A subreddit for anything related to games (but not sports).

"Related" means that posts must contain gaming-related content in the link/post body, not just a "forced" connection via the title or a caption added to the content.

Posting Rules

  • Posts must be directly gaming-related. Thus, "generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission; similarly, reaction GIFs are also not appropriate as submissions.

  • Following Reddiquette is encouraged

  • No "general" URL shorteners (bitly, tinyurl, etc). Single-site URL shorteners (such as youtu.be or fav.me) are allowed.

  • No game or product giveaway of any kind

  • NSFW submissions and comments must be labeled

  • Spoilers can be posted using the following formatting:
    [X Kills Y](/spoiler)
    Result: X Kills Y.

  • To mark a spoiler as relevant to a specific game/topic, use the alternate formatting:
    [Player 1 wins](/spoiler "Pong")
    Result:
    Player 1 wins

  • Report posts containing spoilers not using the above method

  • Don't post users' personal information.

Submission Rules

Is your post not showing up? Do not delete it. Wait 5 minutes to give AutoModerator a chance to look at it; it approves most submissions automatically. If it hasn't shown up after more than 5 minutes, simply message the moderators and ask us to let it through.

Were you trying to say "No U (you)"? Did you misspell "Now"? Or perhaps you were phonetically spelling it the way Arnold Schwarzenegger would pronounce it?

[–]Infinity_Wasted 51 points52 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

also, since the letter "W" is derived from the letter "U", and since American English has extremely flexible orthographic rules, "nou" could be pronounced the same as "now"." in fact, in some Old English dialects, the letter "W" was written simply with two "U"s, like so: uu; others used a now-defunct letter called Wynn.

Actual happenings and the name of something, together in perfect harmony. I love linguistics. What I find amusing, is when tv shows call gun shot wounds (3 syllables) G. S. W.s (5 syllables) for short.

[–]Lillefix 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I could see this happen in real life too. It would probably be so incorporated in the written work they do, that it would just be confusing to use the actual words in speech.

Also, world wide web shortened to www shares this property, not that it is often used in speech.

May I interject with a silly story?

Yes?

Ok...

I am South African, I was raised English colonial and had what was really a very British styled upbringing.

My wife is Afrikaans. In SA it's still a 'thing' dating/marrying over the language/culture line, certainly not as much as if I'd hooked up with a black girl and not that many people would ever even speak openly about the issue but it's there...

In Afrikaans 'nou' means 'now' but it is pronounced 'no'...

As the joke goes: what is the best thing about dating an Afrikaans girl?

...if she says 'no', she means 'now!'

Really not sure how well this will translate, I'm sure Charlize Theron would find jokes like this to be symptomatic of rapey intentions but maybe a few Saffers will read this and bark at their monitor :)

I used to accompany dad to his office, at times, thinking I would have an awesome time there. But after an hour or so things got rather boring and dad won't drop me at home. At times like that, I would watch this screensaver take over life.

[–]cynicallyenhance 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah! My dad worked in a cubicle, but because of his type of job he didn't stay in it very often. I found myself watching the screensaver a lot to pass the time. It was actually really entertaining.

I was once waiting at my mom's office (a bank) back in the late 90s, and was sitting at her colleague's desk (said colleague being on vacation). The PC on her desk (running Win 95) was on and unlocked, so as a joke I set up the screensaver to say 'This computer has been infected with a virus, please format hard drive immediately.' Left with mom a few minutes later and forgot about it.

.. until a few days later, when my mom told us about how there had been a crisis that hit her office - her colleague came back from vacation and melted down because a virus had 'destroyed all the files on her computer', and freaked out for a full half hour trying to fix it. Apparently it only ended only when they called IT, and the guy 'solved the problem in five minutes'.

tl;dr I messed with tech-unsavvy old folks with a virus screensaver, lulz ensued.

[–]DefaultGen 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I did too. And then the screensaver stopped and I got upset and stared at the screen for 20 minutes.

[–]Duh_Ambalamps 9 points10 points ago

protip: right click desktop, properties, (find the screensaver tab, i am in windows 7 at the moment and cant think of the exact procedure.) click PREVIEW. And be forever alone.

[–]unfortunatejordan 20 points21 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When I was 10 or 11, my best friend got a new computer (pentium 166mhz) and I would insist, every time, instead of playing games like monster truck madness, that we go through and preview all the screensavers, and mess with the settings. The bulge and spiral ones were my favourites. He thought I was a freak.

To be fair, he probably still does.

[–]Watercolour 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Dude, I did this exact same thing! My friends would always get pissed at me for doing it and later when the computer inevitably fucked up it would always be my fault for "messing with the settings". Remember how touchy computers were back then? It seemed like any little thing could freeze it. Open up two programs at once, forget about it. Game over man.

[–]WalnutSoap 2 points3 points ago

FTA: "The key to the easter egg is to hold down Control and Shift and type "IBMAB" on the intro screen ("Bambi" was the project's code name). This will unlock the player's controls on this level and allow you to navigate through the level's photo gallery using the arrow keys.[2]"

Here's a link to the maze. It doesn't play well with dula monitors, but it's awesome on a HD screen.

I remember a friend doing the old "my dad works of microsoft" trick and telling me that you could control the mice if you did a series of buttons, but it HAD TO BE the PERFECT combination other wise the screensaver would go away.

Cornell ECE 476, baby. Microcontroller heaven.

You are not alone. I loved pretending to play this maze.

Then, I found an Encarta install disk which included a sweet maze game which if I recall correctly was very similar to this screensaver. Best game ever.

If anyone can remember, it was on the Encarta encyclopedia disc. Forgot which version of Encarta- it came with my Compaq Presario Pentium II back with Windows 95.

[–]dyrim 3 points4 points ago

Was it the trivia maze game which always made me happy when I got the right answer because it played the epic victory music. The one in the medieval castle with all the different characters in the different rooms. And how you could light a match and see the WHOLE maze for like 5 seconds. And in VERY end you get to some witch that transports you back into your time because the whole thing was like some sort of "OMG we need a intelligent dude from the future to come help us break this curse" thing? Is this the one?

[–]squished_orc 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I remember there being an amazing game on Encarta which involved going around this castle solving riddles and questions derived from the enclyopedia. Probably not the same thing, but it just goes to show Encarta had some awesome games going for it.

Wolf3D is 3.4 MB. That's how far gaming has come since then.

Does anyone know how big Solitare is now?

Be cautious, because there can be viruses in .scr files, but I found this a while back. http://www.mediafire.com/?0dyzv1i2weo

Will work on modern versions of Windows.

i really want this but now I am scared. I'm scared even if I d/l and scan with MSE... If i do this and it's clean is it basically for sure safe at that point?

I'm in the middle of writing my thesis and the last thing i need is a virus. (the second to last thing I need is wasting time with shit like this)

[–]AmosTrask 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Could be wrong, but the way you say this makes me think that you haven't backed up your thesis. Don't consider anything saved until it is backed up. Seriously. if you don't back stuff up you are going to lose something eventually.

Register for an account on Dropbox

it adds a new folder to your computer that's synced online. So whatever file you work in that folder, all changes are backed up instantly, and you can revert back to older copies. Very awesome.

I liked it cause it reminded me of this ChexMix game we used to have. You had to slime creatures. Kind of weird, but it was my favorite game ever.

I was 6. I had just taken my first plane ride to the new country known to me as the united states. I also took my first car ride ever to this bizarre place called Costco. There, I was mesmerized by the compaq presarios with colorful pipe screensavers, and of course this one. I thought I was in control, but everytime I hit an arrow key, the maze would disappear and I would have to wait five minutes for the maze to come back. After that, I watched in wonderment until my mom called me over for free samples.

[–]TomatoSlayer 2 points3 points ago

It was a game, but it was severely bugged. It would start up randomly and my character would just randomly walk by itself, and when I tried to move around with the arrow keys, the game crashed to Windows with no error message. Also, there weren't any enemies.

FAKING LOVED THIS AS A KID The best was when you set the walls ceiling and floor to that psychedelic, undulating colors pattern :D

I would like to play it as a game until you hit a dead end and then the map would flip upside down and collapse on itself. It would be the best most nerve-wrecking game ever!
