LOAD"*",8,1 loads the first program on the disk and executes it.

LOAD"$",8 loads the contents of Drive 8 [the first Floppy Drive] as a BASIC program so you can LIST and see the contents.

I had one as a kid and had no idea what any of that actually did, but figured it out like this year with emulators... and the manual.

[–]Sabbatai[!] 5 points6 points ago

So you are saying it was a GUI and nothing more? What difference does it make in the spirit of this conversation though, whether or not people realize the "technical" aspects of this?

[–]swm5126 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Windows 3.1 was pretty much just a window manager running on top of DOS. So was any version of Windows 9x in reality, but they did a heck of a lot more and added a lot that you really couldnt do in DOS, while still using it for some tasks.

[–]diadem 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That makes me feel very old. My first operating system was ProDOS. I didn't upgrade to MSDOS until I got that top of the line 386DX 40MHZ.

If you don't know what an Apple IIc is, don't worry. You aren't missing much. Even my horribly outdated phone destroys it in almost any measurable factor aside from screen size.

My family was always slightly behind technologically though, we got our first PC in 2002, and it was pre-loaded with ME. I'm not sure how that was possible. We got a new one with XP within a year I believe. Pretty sad really. On another note, I got a Super Nintendo right before the N64 came out, then a PSX when the PS2 launched. sigh

fun windows xp logon trick: by default, the administrator account has no password and doesn't show up on the user list, so nobody bothers to set a password for it. at the logon screen, hit ctrl+alt+del+del to get the classic logon box and log on as administrator.

[–]Eptesicus 50 points51 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Best way to bypass the XP login:

Any application that runs under no particular user (for example, the login screen itself) runs under the SYSTEM user, which is basically Windows root.

If StickyKeys is enabled, then pressing Shift five times on the dull NTish login (though I think not on the fancy one with user account images) will pop up the box about StickyKeys. This box is actually a program called sethc.exe, from System32, running under the SYSTEM account because nobody is logged in.

If you boot off a disk that supports NTFS, you can navigate to System32 and replace sethc.exe with a copy of cmd.exe. Then, when you go to the login screen, simply press Shift five times and a command prompt opens up with all the permissions of the SYSTEM user (that is, total power). Proceed to use the user command to add or modify local user accounts as you please.

Edit: To add to this, if you want to retain long-term local access and are more comfortable with having CMD in place of StickyKeys than you are adding a new admin account or changing the existing one's password, then just run explorer.exe from the SYSTEM command prompt. It's a big buggy since it's not supposed to be used as a normal account but should let you run anything else just fine.

[–]Megatron_McLargeHuge 51 points52 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So your hack requires booting to your own OS and modifying the drive?

[–]Eptesicus 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes -- I used NTFS4DOS -- it went on a floppy and basically booted oldschool DOS without any interaction with Windows (if you just use a blank floppy it can't read NTFS). Better stuff like Ubuntu would work too -- but takes a little longer to setup, which can be bad if you're actually breaking into something.

If alternate boot devices are disabled in the BIOS and the BIOS is passworded, then you're probably out of luck, unless you have enough time alone with the machine to open it up and reset the BIOS password by moving the jumpers.

The subtext here is that if you have full access to begin with, you can copy whatever you want or install a rootkit or keylogger. I suppose your trick is a pretty good one for someone who wants access but isn't interested in spending countless hours perfecting hacking skills.

[–]NinjaYoda 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Doesn't the old Cmos battery trick work? If you just remove the little battery on mother board and it resets the Bios password.

[–]tpcbri 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wow thats awesome. Seems that it would work on Windows 7 also, I just tried shift 5 times at the logon screen and sticky keys popped up, along with sethc.exe in task manager.

[–]Eptesicus 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Neat trick. Too bad you need to already have full access to the system before you can pull it off.

That's true -- if you have access to modify system files, whether from within Windows or not, then you pretty much have total power to start with. This is most useful for a system you use regularly but have limited access to, or one you otherwise want to be able to have full access to without jumping through hoops later on. If you're just looking to grab some files you don't have permission to or something, then there are a lot of more direct ways of doing that.

[–]Japsser 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but don't you just mean physical access? Booting a machine with a live linux CD will allow you to modify anything you want on a windows partition right? That is if it's not encrypted by the user.

[–]speedis 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I can confirm that this even works on Windows Server 2008.

I've had to use it a few times at work when things have gone wrong. Just boot with an Ubuntu Live CD, mount the Windows drive and replace the sethc.exe file (after having backed it up, of course).

[–]clevermoniker 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Instead of using stickykeys, which may or may not be enabled, you can also replace "logon.scr" with your choice of batch files renamed as logon.scr. Unfortunately, you then have to wait 10 minutes for the logon screensaver to get called by system... After that you have the keys to the castle, though.

[–]zaffle 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you can boot from different media, you can use ntpasswd to reset any local admin password, thus skipping the step of replacing a system binary. Replacing the system binary is only useful if you want to covertly gain local admin access and the system hasn't been locked down properly.

[–]NinjaYoda 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Next time I try hacking into a windows box, I will make sure to try hitting Shift 5 times just in case a cmd prompt pops up so I don't have to do the menial work.

[–]omgpro 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But how do you copy that file without being logged on?

[–]Eptesicus 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Boot from an insertable disc -- e.g. the Ultimate Boot CD, or Ubuntu, or NTFS4DOS (which was my choice when I learned about this).

Stop me if you've heard this one... Get a Linux live Cd. Stick it in the drive of most computers. Let the OS load into memory. You now have access to everything. It's not even a hack. LOL.

[–]BinaryRockStar 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't understand all these people in this thread that think they're discussing some sort of hacking but all on the premise that you have physical access to the machine, BIOS and even internal access to the components(!). Breaking into any machine is kinda trivial under these circumstances.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's still a form of hacking. And some of them only require physical access and poor BIOS settings, not BIOS or internal access.

It's usually not that hard to get to log onto a single node on a network. If you're able to reboot from a media drive, then some of these tricks are useful. If you aren't, well, then that's hacking as you see it. I don't think it's the only form.

Could we argue a little bit on the gender of Windows 98? I'd like to think your use of the feminine gender was a nice touch, but isn't masculine the everyday usage? You could also have avoided any gender, but then again your creativity won.

[–]Areia 5 points6 points ago

[–][deleted] 30 points31 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Let me get this straight. I measure myself in man years (or I assume they're man years because they're what I've been using this whole time; my driver's license agrees). For one man year, 3.83 woman years go by. If a man is at least 18 in man years, any girl who has been alive for 5 man years can legally give consent. It would be discriminatory to measure any person by the opposite genders age system, therefore men must be allowed to treat everything in man years. Of course the opposite it true, but I'm willing to let 6 year-old girls drink, drive, and enlist if I'm right.

[–]Velium 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually, no. On average, a woman year is 3.83 man years. However, women years pass faster over time, at a rate proportional to the square of the number of man years that have passed since birth. Thus, woman years are actually longer during early life before becoming much shorter.

Better yet, do you realize that if you hit cancel it will take you straight to the desktop? Windows 9x isn't a multiuser OS like NT, XP, Vista or Win7. The prompt is basically to get access to the network domain, it doesn't matter if you manage to get explorer working the network still is secured.

That's why first hitting cancel would take you to the desktop anyway, is not a security feature for local access, but for network access. Microsoft made possible (optional) for cancel to fail because many dumb employees where canceling when they forgot their password and then called IT because email, the printer or POS wasn't working.

TLDR; those who find this funny don't really know what it was designed for, for local use Windows 9x is a single user OS.

Are you serious? I swear I remember it being larger than that.

I suddenly feel compelled to chart this.

[–]khast 56 points57 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, okay, 2nd edition was 120MB for an average install. But first edition was ~68MB.

Windows 3.11 was only 8MB 95FE was 28-32MB 95SE was 48-60MB 98FE was 58-68MB 98SE was 100-140MB

Depending on options and such.

Me and a friend used to compete against each other to put 95/98 on systems that "shouldn't" have been able to run them. My friend managed to get a 98 install down to 10MB (Though the one that impressed me was 95 on an 8088 with 640KB and a 20MB HDD).... I managed to get 98 running on 2MB with no cache with almost no noticeable hiccups. (Those were the good old days....)

Oh god, I used to do the exact same thing trying to get a 286 with 1 MB RAM and 30 MB HD to run operating systems way ahead of its time. There was a special sort of joy that came out of pushing old equipment past its limits.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I call bullshit; even Windows 3.11 used lots of 80386 instructions. Unless you recompiled the OS, it wouldn't run on older hardware. An 8088 isn't just slower, it's an extremely simpler architecture which is not capable of doing a lot of things that 95 requires to run.

[–]amraam 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]khast 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Surprisingly the 286 and 386 computers did okay with Windows 95 even if you didn't have enough RAM, little slow for 98...you had to trim so much off to make them even remotely usable. (The 8088 one was completely useless as it was too slow to operate, the frame draw rate was like 1-2 frames per second with obvious lag on the draw/erase...but if you had patience, I guess you could've played Solitare.)

I had hard drives velcrowed to the side of the case of my old ass computer, and just barely got it to over a gig of space, after investing thousands of dollars.

Some operating systems are still that small, and they are freakin' awesome. The newest version of Puppy Linux is only 130 mb, and it's actually pretty fancy. Makes my 1998 IBM run super fast, too.

Only because he was trying to log onto a domain - hitting Cancel worked if the machine wasn't part of a domain.

[–][deleted] 64 points65 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He basically made it seem more complex then it actually was. He wasn't able to hit cancel because of the domain, but that little trick still logged him into the local machine not a domain.

[–]King_Hippo 103 points104 points ago

Its true, this isn't "Computer" login, its "Network" login. Hitting cancel only prevents you from accessing network resources.

[–]xeusion 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This same glitch used to let us bypass the Novell ZenWorks login prompts on the Win98 computers we had in high school. This, combined with another glitch where you could trick Novell into re-mounting network shares with the permissions of the last logged-on user made for great fun.

We'd have someone fabricate a printing issue with their computer, have an admin reboot the box and test it. Of course it would work and they would go on their way--then, it was exploit time. You can do all kinds of nefarious things with admin rights on the file servers...

yup. windows 9x lacked real security for its users. the only purpose for the logon was to load user preferences. Although, this is a fancy way around hitting cancel ;)

I forgot what it's called, but it's essentially a local security policy editor. Cancel won't get you anywhere if set up properly. You'll get an error prompt. I used to manage hundreds of these Win95 boxes.

For a good time: run command and type "cd con/con"

protip: if a computer uses windows xp home and you only have a limited account, you can boot the computer in safe mode without a password (home only) and it logs you in as administrator then you can create an alternative admin account or change the current admin password.

if you want to access files on a windows xp pro admin account (or any account for that matter), use a live linux boot cd that supports reading and writing to NTFS. linux will load and you will have access to all files on the windows partition.

If you have physical access to the machine its game over. This applies to every OS out there.

[–]JohnFrum 15 points16 points ago

Things aren't quite that black / white. If the machine is off and the drive is encrypted your data is pretty safe. The memory card hack requires the system to be on and even then it doesn't work every time.

Yes indeed. There are linux boot disks which will reset passwords all the way up to Windows 7, which is hilarious. Although a good system admin will block boot access to DVD drives and USB sticks, and resetting the password really only gives you access to the local machine.

Cheers

OSX (at least 10.3, I think it was) isn't much better. My cousin got locked out of his (or "a") Mac and called me up, asking if I knew how to bypass the security. Well, I didn't. However, after a bit of Google-fu, I was in like Flynn.

This is not actually a fail. That's not a windows 98 logon. It's a microsoft networking logon. Pressing ESC would give the user full access to the computer, but no access to network resources.

I first started programming on mainframes with punchcards

When PCs first came out, I had a CP/M machine. (IMSAI 8080 with front panel switches to enter bootcode in binary)

When I got an IBM PC, it ran PC-DOS.

I suffered through MS-DOS, DOS extenders, himem.sys and Windows 3.

Believe me...at the time, Windows 95 was a HUGE, MAJOR, FUKKIN' INCREDIBLE improvement!

Of course, now we can all laugh at how much it sucked.

[–]gc3 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I kind of miss the lack of security in those days. I used to set up a local network just by assigning each computer an IP address. No need to futz with complicated settings, it just worked. You could share files, printers, etc.

If people were better behaved we wouldn't need any security.

[–]davendak 2 points3 points ago

Win 95 was worse--merely hitting the cancel button brought one right to the desktop, albeit without networking.

[–]Tiver 2 points3 points ago

Maybe it didn't work on every machine but ctrl+escape would bring up a task manager, from which you could do file->run and run explorer. Vastly fewer mouse clicks than this gif shows.
