The picture is titled Modern Rome, painted by Giovanni Paolo Panini, 1757.

Source

EDIT: I was mistaken. The painting is indeed a Panini, but it is a piece done two years later by him titled, Gallery of Views of Modern Rome. The similarities between the two pieces are incredible. Even more amazing that Panini did a series of these highly detailed works!

Correct Source

Thanks to BradburyMan for pointing that out.

The OP's painting and the one you posted are not the same. I believe the one in the photo is called "Galerie de vues de la Rome moderne"

i hope this comment gets noticed because my life has been leading up to this.

i just spent 4 months putting together a massive, 5,000 piece, 5 foot long puzzle of this very painting.

http://i.imgur.com/kB3cI.jpg

i now know every goddamned detail of this painting, from the blue stool, to the guy crouching with the red cape, to the many, many, many fountains in the paintings, not to mention the lion, the hemispherical picture window, and those godawful drapes around the entire thing. so help me, i know it all so very, very well.

i know it like the husband knows the various shades of pink within his wife's vulva, and the way she could with a pencil draw a vertical line perfectly matching his wangvein. i know it like the feces inspector knows the corn of the fece, and how the lonely reddit addict knows the exact contour of sadness.

pity me, but upvote me. for i know this painting.

EDIT: here's a pic i took of it midway through http://i.imgur.com/z2Vxg.jpg

Funny you mentioned OCD. I had to ban jigsaw puzzles from my house because I would work a 1k piece puzzle until it was complete. Didn't want to do anything else. I'm almost tempted to get a nice puzzle and see if I remain human. I also had to ban Tetris and Klax for NES because I would play for hours.

[–]eggertm 15 points16 points ago

You start with the corners, and then do the frame - the rest is just finding identifiable bits and assembling them. Personally, I find the hardest part keeping the cat out of the work in progress.

Masterful. With these writing skills you should consider writing a book about how the painting conceals clues about an ancient religious order protecting the descendants of Jesus Christ. Just an idea.

Well done... but I hope you take my advice here. Jigsaw puzzles are a huge waste of time. I did them in my youth, but ultimately it's like digging a ditch and filling it in. The time is better spent either learning to draw/paint, or doing photography. These hours of frivolous tasks add up. Reddit could be a time waster, but isn't since there is valuable information from others to be learned.

I do congratulate you on a job well done,

But hope I can dissuade you from calling puzzles "fun."

They can be entertaining to a child for a spell,

But soon you grow to realize there's life outside your shell.

I would instead request that you find a useful skill,

A trade, artform or hobby with which your time could fill.

The world needs painters, sculptors, and photographic prints,

Not weirdos in their basements puzzling 'til their brain is minced.

Puzzles do improve short term memory and your ability to recognize minor details(something that in any field of work can help you succeed I challenge you to find a job where paying attention to details doesn't make you better at it) while wasting time and being entertaining.

[–]Vitsen 31 points32 points ago*

This was a selected work of the Academic Decathlon art section last year. Panini was very skilled in "vedute" (views) paintings, and he was great at drawing architecture. Both Modern Rome and its pendant piece, Ancient Rome, were painted for his sponsor, the Count de Stainville, who is pictured in Ancient Rome as the guy holding the guidebook. Panini himself is in Ancient Rome as well.

"Modern" refers to the Renaissance and Baroque era, not the neoclassical style that Panini painted in. You can see statues like Michaelangelo's Moses and Bernini's David and Apollo and Daphne.

Panini himself was pretty good, but my favorite neoclassical artist would have to be Jacque-Louis David. If you wish to see a truly epic painting, check out Diego Rivera's murals or stuff like Romagnesi's The Triumph of Aemilius Paulus.

EDIT: Well with the OP's edit, I can only follow up with this: I know nothing about The Gallery of Views of Ancient Rome.

Because historically as a nation we never really got along with Britain and the rest of Europe (but especially Britain) until World War I, and even then, not too cozy until World War II. The war of 1812, the forced conscription of American sailors on the high seas by the British, and the burning of our capital couldn't have done any good on the friendliness front. Considering a great deal of our European immigrated population were the poor and outcast of those societies, there likely wasn't a huge willingness on their part to continue to 'fall in line' with what the Europe did as standards evolved.

So until the early to mid 20th century, it really was a bunch of fuck you back to the Continent. Vocabulary (you can thank Webster), mannerisms and culture, units of measurement- IMHO it was all a bid to further our sense of uniqueness from our (at that point) forefathers.

Of course, I prefer metric.

Hey, look! I can screw around with decimals and fractions to make one system look sillier too:

67.75"x 91.75" or 2 3/10 m x 1 140/200 m

I still think we should use metric, but there are plenty of legitimate reasons.

[–]hogiewan 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

67 3/4" = 1.72085 m

and

91 3/4" = 2.33045 m

or we could say 67.8"x91.8" and it is just as concise as your meter reference

[–]Bing10 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's unfair. Why does meters get represented with decimals, but the inches representation uses fractions? Also, the inches (being smaller units) is more accurate. Hell, even using feet it would be more accurate.

Here: 5.6' x 7.6'

The advantages of the metric system is that it's easier to convert. But it's dishonest to pretend there's any others.

[–]Chirp08 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why are you comparing a measurement in inches to one in meters? It is 5.6ft x 7.6ft which is just as easy to read and comprehend.

It sounds like a touristy thing to say, but the best thing about Europe is the museums and places where ancient stuff is lying around. There are so many private collections full of stuff that you'd never hear about, but which are on display for free, and half the churches in Rome are marvels of art and architecture.

Like, you can go the the palace cisterns in Istanbul and there's a cafe right there underground where you can just chill out and sit in a national treasure.

I bet most redditors live near a museum they could visit right now. Gotta make time to just marvel at all the great stuff humanity creates every once in a while.

[–]RobertVoor 25 points26 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

One of the reasons I live in New England, and not, say, anywhere else in the States, is that it is one of the few places in the US where I feel an actual connection to the past.

Living in a country without a visible past - without ruins, old buildings, or even museums showcasing the past - warps our world view. It both speeds up our pace of life and creates in us a belief that life is eternal, and that social, political, and religious structures are permanent.

It's subtle, but it's there. I need to be able to stumble on a stone wall from the 1800's every now and then, and think about the people that made it, and ponder how overgrown it is today.

[–]astrodog 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There's a great Anglo-Saxon word that describes a concept like this: dustsceawung, meaning "contemplation of dust". "It is a true image of the Anglo-Saxon mind, or at least an echo of that consciousness which considered transience and loss to be part of the human estate; it was a world in which life was uncertain and the principal deity was fate or destiny or "wyrd."" The poem The Ruin is a good example of an Anglo-Saxon view on old Roman ruins and how this once bustling and rich place is now just rubble --its people long gone, but their structures remain, slowly decaying.

Its a pleasure to see someone that enjoys this stuff.

I lived in a country town and took pleasure in lurking regularly in our Art Gallery (2 story !) and our two museums (one for specifically for marine stuff being a crayfishing town and one for history etc).

First thing I check when Im holidaying is what museums are available and art galleries, I might not do all of them but I make a point to work through the list each time Im on holidays at each location.

One dusty little Australian town church has some beautiful pictures on display, they had been stolen by thieves who used stanley knives to cut them out their frames (hand made by the artist iirc) so they could roll them up. The paintings were eventually retrieved from some Arabic country and returned to the church. Honestly the story was just as interesting as the small church and their painting collection.

Note: sorry for the vague details, I was about 10 when I saw this church and have not been back that way since.

I've got an Art History class this semester, and I'm blown away by the depth of knowledge in some of these extremely old paintings. Eh... as unfair as it is to now bring up DaVinci, read about his painting "The Last Supper" if you can. I haven't been able to find a place online that explained it as wonderfully as my teacher, but each person is an astrological symbol. Their hands and body parts even represent old ways of understanding the symbols. This comment might be a little useless, but old art is the shit.

[–]CeeZedby 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not denying that DaVinci or any of the renaissance masters weren't brilliant, but there can be a danger in maintaining that any one interpretation of an artist's work is the only true interpretation.

There are many many ways of looking at something as beautifully crafted as the "The Last Supper", and if one particular view allows you to appreciate it differently from before, then great. But every interpretation is only someone's opinion.

Ok, here's what I know from that day in class. Might I remind you I'm a CS major, and am repeating what I know from memory. Don't blame me for things that might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure not. Take this picture of The Last Supper (a cleaned up version). Now this wonderful teacher I had told me about how DaVinci was ahead of his time by being able to recognize that we're looking at the constellations in reverse order. Starting on the far right you'll get a religious figure representing Aries, and on the far left it ends with Pisces. Before, and even after for a while, people believed the Zodiac was viewed in reverse. Now I can't remember exactly how, of all of their body parts, they're supposed to represent the sign, but I do know Pisces is known for the feet, which is the man on the far right has his foot showing more prominently. Also, there's these 4 groups of types of people he was talking about. Minus the center figure there's 4 groups of three that all represent a different kind of mentality in people. The painting is probably the best point of perspective work in history. Everything seems to point to the middle, for obvious reasons. I'll come back if I can remember more, but my memory is poor :/

You mean the type of art whose goal - recreating the 3D, physical world on a 2D plane - can be done more quickly, easily, and accurately with a camera?

There's a reason why photography and the modernist art movement took off roughly simultaneously. It's all a matter of using the right tool for the job. If you want to make a precise copy of a visual image, the camera is the right tool. If you want to express visually things that do not occur in the real world, modern art (painting, sculpture, etc.) is the right tool. Doing a good job with the wrong tool can show great personal talent, but one can do an even better job with the right tool.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Modern art requires skill, but it's skill in coming up with a new idea that no-one else has, as opposed to technical mastery. I accept there's a lot of crap due to people trying to be "original", but somewhere out there is our generation's Warhol or Pollock, and they're going to have an impact on the way we see the world and ourselves, whether we like it or not.

[–]Rokusi 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

that sounds more like creativity than skill

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's probably a fair point. But it's applied creativity; coming up with all sorts of crazy crap and hoping some of it is seen as relevant is a pretty hit-and-miss strategy (thought I'm sure many use it).

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's from a stunning series of works. One of the similar pieces, Picture Gallery with Views of Modern Rome is hanging in the MFA here in Boston, and it's incredible in it's full sized splendor. If you're interested in the pieces, they were commissioned by a french duke to commemorate his stay in Rome as the french ambassador to the vatican. That's the duke depicted in the middle there. The sculptures around him are from Michelangelo and Bernini, and all of the paintings are also Panini's paintings of some Roman landmarks including St.Peters Square, Trevi Fountain, and the Spanish Steps.

Here's a picture of the one in the MFA

So it has been like 10 years since I took an art history class... but did they make these as a way to sell art, or at least was there a class of paintings that were like traveling catalogs where they would use it to sell the paintings depicted within? For some reason I remember something like that but I may be just making it up... I might have to go pull out my copy of Gardner's Art Through the Ages and find out.

[–]adozeninsurgents 2 points3 points ago

Pretty sure it was a way to show a bunch of different views of a city without making separate paintings.

My source is that I'm pretty sure I remember seeing it in the Met and reading that on the plaque.
