Malcolm made the show good, but Hal made it great

And now Hal works as a professional badass, cooking meth and killing people

Sweet Jesus that's where I recognized him from! Holy crap.

Also I hate IMDB's new look. HATE.

If you have an account there's a box in preferences you can check to get the old layout.

[–][deleted] 131 points132 points ago

Make the site layout so bad that you have to create an account to avoid it? Ingenious!

[–]frukt 16 points17 points ago

Reddit did it, why not IMDB? I've had to turn off all the thumbnails, custom styles and other sundry bullshit in preferences here as well.

Ya, the new IMDB sucks. Not really feelin' the makeover on Metacritic either :(

[–]BHSPitMonkey 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why all the hate? I think the design is a lot better and easier to look at.

The only thing I can see missing is the index on the left column when you're looking at a title, but you can just skip to the footer for the same thing now.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I just feel like it's harder to find information on the new IMDb. There's so much space taken up by the actor's photo and the "YOU MIGHT KNOW THIS PERSON FROM ONE OF THESE FOUR FAMOUS MOVIES" section. 99% of the time, when I click on an actor's name I just want to see their filmography.

[–]MBuddah 10 points11 points ago

[–][deleted] 46 points47 points ago*

You have to look at it like a pay raise. Boy, 30k sure did suck. Now that I'm making 40k, I'll be happier...Boy, 40k sucks. I just bought a new car, and loans are eating up all my funds. I want 50k...Now that I have 50k, the house loans are eating up my funds! I want 60k...On a 60k salary, I can only take like 2 vacations a year! The kids need a new dental plan. If only I made 70k...

And so on, and so on. As soon as you make more money, your spending grows to accommodate. With $40 million, you'll do stuff like buy private jets and solid gold hot tubs. You'll wish you had $100 million. Few people are ever happy with what they have. Comfortable, yes. Happy, no.

Actually, it's right at $75k. Above that, happiness does not correlate with money, but instead on the person. But it does make you more satisfied with life.

Below that, oh yeah.

Hal / Francis dual storyline episodes were always the best.

[–][deleted] 56 points57 points ago

Absolutely. It's like The Simpsons. Children think Bart makes the show, but adults realize that Homer Simpson is where the true comedy is at. Or where it used to be anyway.

Fun Fact, Dewie now goes to USC.

[–]Gold_Leaf_Initiative 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Dewie was hilarious. The "Genius but nobody has time to pay attention to him" act led to some ridiculous situations. I loved how he was "better" than his brothers in many ways, and was only held back by his age and size. Definitely an interesting dynamic.

[–]DarkScorpion 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Agreed. Before his character really developed, I wasn't a big fan of the show, but the maturation of his character made the show a lot more interesting for me.

Give them all time... with the right role, maybe some time doing live theatre, any child star can make a decent comeback (NPH, Seth Green, Christina Applegate, Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Leonardo DiCaprio). Truth is, acting isn't that hard -- that's how the children of famous people get into show business, it's not because talent is genetic.

[–]ameerkat 12 points13 points ago

Alright so here's the plan we'll arrive at his house at 10:45, ifiwasntintherapgame and myself will approach his door while jun2san pulls around back so we can get away unnoticed. We will then proceed to knock vehemently at his door. At approximately 10:46 someone will answer the door, at which point we will politely ask if Frankie Muniz is in. Assuming he is, when Frankie Muniz comes out at 10:47 ifiwasntintherapgame will then proceed to hand me a $2 bill, at which point I will then ask him for two $1 bills. He will then give us the money if everything goes to plan, at which point we will proceed around to the back where we will make our get away. Alright, any questions?

They need a scene where Malcolm walks in the room, and he just stares at Walter. Walter looks up at him and has a look of pure shock in his eyes.
He slowly walks over to Malcolm, and embraces him, as he whimpers quietly "Son...".
Malcolm embraces his father and then tearfully pulls back.
"God Malcolm, I can't believe you're here, the last I heard you'd beco-". He stops mid-sentence. The last he'd heard of Malcolm, was that Malcolm was the President of the USA.
"I COME HERE FOR YOU DAD!"

Because of competition. Some actors are so good at what they do and the public likes them so much that studios compete to get them. In order to get them, they have to offer more and more money. But it's worth it, because the actors bring them in a higher profit.

Most actors aren't famous, and aren't paid well at all, or can't find good work.

I'm sure there would be many great actors and athletes if we lived in a world where they're not offered more than 30 dollars an hour or so, by law. Many of them do it because it's what they love, what their passion is. But if you offer someone a lot of money for doing something they would do for 30 dollars an hour, 99% of people will do it. The only people you can blame is the general public for supporting films just because they have certain actors, but that's just them having tastes. A lot of actors make a lot of money simply for being famous (and not for talent), but a lot are also genuinely very talented. I have no problem with Leo getting paid millions for his roles. We should support good art, and good culture, and that means choosing good movies to watch. Everything else is just the studios trying to stay in business and provide for their employees. No one's really at fault here...I don't see what the problem is. Maybe actors and athletes should be encouraged to give more to charity?

I still haven't figured out why Kim Kardashian is famous.

[–]sje46 6 points7 points ago

For being famous.

Actually, her father Robert Kardashian was one of OJ Simpson's attorneys and friends. So he was kinda a rich Hollywood lawyer. Kim became became a bit of a socialite, and it's pretty much her sex tape with some rapper that made her famous. It's stupid.

This is very true. Most actors make a very small amount of money, and even those in major movies (not in lead parts) make only mediocre livings.

They don't all get so much money, just the ones that are irreplaceable. Supply/demand. If you're one-of-a-kind, you're in short supply.

In other words, people overvalue them.

[–]Kache 113 points114 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'd say that's not completely true. They're (successful) in the entertainment business. If they're good enough entertain me for an hour, I'd say it's worth $1-5 dollars from me.

Now if 10 million other people do the same thing, well, that's just the way popularity works.

[–]killingmelarry 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The public may overvalue people but the companies that pay them rarely do. Tom Cruise is worth $20M per movie because he generates >$20M extra revenue per movie.

The same is true for athletes. It's even more "fair" with them. Anyone who is more skilled than Tiger Woods can make more money than him (well, endorsements might be less if you're not attractive).

[–]Rhomboid 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If an individual actor or athlete personally made X amount of money it's a pretty good bet that they made 2X, 5X, 10X, or more for their team owner/production company/studio/etc, otherwise they wouldn't have been paid X. It's really just a form of profit sharing. Hopefully if you're ever in a position to make a company 100 million dollars you'd have the good sense to ask for a mere five or ten percent of that in return.

[–]withnailandI 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Back in the day, the athlete/performer would get a pittance compared to how much management and the owners made. So we've progressed since then.

[–]railstay 3 points4 points ago

Because you go to watch their blockbuster movies and their Superbowl games.

How do you place a cap on how much people are willing to spend on luxury? Or in the case of athletes, there are salary caps in place, but it's a complicated issue because of demand and consumer trends. Lets say they capped athlete salaries so no one can get paid over a million dollars, but the leagues are still raking in disgusting amounts money. What happens to all that excess money? There are only so many stadiums you can build and events you can promote. In the case of the NFL, sure in the past they really didn't take care of their injured players, but now players who get injured or even permanently injured receive a great deal of support. If it doesn't go to the athletes (after all, they're what makes the entire franchise possible) then who? Are you going to force a private corporation to donate to charity? Is that morally correct?

What makes an actor or an athlete so different from any other form of entertainer? If I wrote an amazing novel that sells over a billion copies, should I be capped on how much of those sales goes to me?

I definitely wouldn't want to end up like the man who made Tetris. What happened to Alexey Pajitnov is a total travesty.

[–]megablast 4 points5 points ago

Because you are a fool. Athletes and actors make so much money, because they create loads of money for the people they work for. if they didn't get paid heaps, then the people they work for would get even more money, and they already make huge amounts.

Actually a study came out that concluded wealth that allows you to relax and have a good time does make people happy. Imagine that.

[–]Mooshiga 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, but I don't just mean happier, I mean happy. I don't see how everyday misery could get to you with all that money, but it still does. All my clients are extremely wealthy yet miserable.

[–]smpx 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because happy is not a lifestyle, but an emotion. For some reason, people think that human beings can just "click" into perpetual happiness forever on condition. This makes no sense, emotions come and go dependent on a person's frame of reference.

If you made 50 million dollars today, you'd probably feel pretty happy. Then your cat dies. Now you're less happy. Then your girlfriend gives you a blowjob, now you're happy again. Then you find out your friends all hate you because of how much money you have. Now you're unhappy.

Money is just a change in the frame of reference, it has nothing to do with emotion.

So there's this thing called advertising, then there's this thing called movie tickets. Now since there are ... billions of people involved in the entertainment industry and the entertainment industry is pretty much privately owned.. they can profit from it as much as they want.

This is why Albums cost $10, Movie tickets now cost $10, and cable is $100/month. Because millions watch TV and brand recognition is so important, advertises pay big bucks (since many of the HAVE big bucks, there is competition for these ad spots) to get their name during commercials.

Now, I'm pretty sure you just felt like throwing that out there since you probably allready knew this and just feel like you don't Like that it works that way... buuuut Anyways.

tl dr Lots of people watch shit. Big companies want people to see Their shit. Actors and Athletes = Bank.

I have a friend that met Frankie at his cousin's wedding. Every time he saw Frankie he called him Cody Banks.

"hey what's up Cody?"

"actually my name is Fra-"

"See you later Cody!"

This continued until Frankie would walk away whenever my friend was nearby.

Every time I see Cody/Frankie on television I think of this and laugh.

I have no reason to doubt him. Malcolm is in massive syndication which is HUGE money, and he was starring in it for how many seasons? He's also known to have invested in expensive real estate, which could have gone either way but it's likely he made a ton of money on that too, or still owns them. Combined with the movies, $40M is not a stretch.
