I would so love to grow this in the US. One of my pipe dreams is to have an exotics garden. I want to grow these, Black Currants, Miracle Fruit, and Ice Cream Bananas (ok, so those wouldn't be feasible, yet they are still awesome).

Take advantage of grafting and make a utopia tree that bears every type of fruit you can imagine.

I think you're overselling this a little bit. You can do a tree with multiple citrus fruits (lemon, lime, orange) on the same tree, or different types of apple on a single tree, but there are plenty of limitations. Apple -> citrus won't work, for example.

[–]ginnungagap 21 points22 points ago

Alas, you've crushed my dreams. Although you've saved me a great deal of time.

[–]OMGTSN 9 points10 points ago

But what if you were to splice the apple/citrus molecules and make a CITRAPPLE TREE. Then use this logic to graft your citrapple onto your citrus tree, making it easier to graft an apple to this now glorious tree.

[–]ianfw617 28 points29 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Grafting only really works with trees from the same family. For instance, when I was a kid my grandparents had a couple of orange trees that had branches that would bear limes, tangerines and grapefruits.
Grafting works especially well with citrus trees and most orange groves consist almost entirely of grafted trees as I understand it. Apparently the root system that sweet orange trees have is fairly weak, so to compensate they plant a whole grove of sour oranges, then after they grow a bit graft on sweet orange branches and voila!

[–]srmatto 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Is that even possible? I know you can make one tree with lemons and limes on it and another tree with different varieties of apples.

[–]YHZ 23 points24 points ago

My parents have a black currant bush at their house in Nova Scotia. Not that exotic.

[–]Team_Braniel 32 points33 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thanks to an old law put in place to stop a parasite they were banned in the us till recently. They aren't common here. It may not be exotic but it fits my wishlist of esoteric fruit.

[–]YHZ 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That sucks.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Probably not as much as an invasive parasite, though.

[–]Team_Braniel 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It was an 1800s law put in place by the timber lobby to stop a bug that ravaged pine but would only live in pine and the currant plants. Since then the us has been currant free, until recently.

Black currant is the strongest antioxidant fruit, even better than acai.

[–]maasikas 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

...They were banned in the US? My grandfather smuggled them in from the USSR in a handkerchief in his inner suit jacket pocket in the 1970s (that's the only illegal part I knew about) and grew them, together with red currants, for decades in New York City and Baltimore. We still have bushes of each in the garden now, though we're starting to lose them.

Huh. Who knew.

[–]mmrc8 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Have you had them?

They're not that great, in my opinion. They have a strange, gamey flavor which really isn't very pleasant in a fruit.

I grew up on an exotic fruit farm in Hawai'i. We had, among other things, starfruit, star apples, black sapote, jackfruit, soursop and sweetsop, liliko'i, mountain cup, and a number of varieties of papaya, mango, and banana. We had ice cream bananas (blue-green skin, fat like a plantain, soft and creamy flesh in a pale yellow tone), and about fifty other varieties, including a rare Hawai'ian variety that had been reserved for the highest cast of the Ali'i (nobles). This banana was flame orange-streaked yellow with red flecking, had bunches that pointed straight up (instead of hanging down like normal bananas), bright yellow-orange flesh with a texture like that of ice cream bananas, only richer, and a flavor that I can only describe as heady, like a cognac, rich, like a spiced chocolate custard, and cloying, like mango. And, if you ate them, they caused your urine to turn blood red.

[–]Gioware 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ok, where can I buy some of that flame orange bananas?

[–]ImpulseControl 2 points3 points ago

Is that banana listed here, on this sweet Hawaiian banana poster?

[–]JshWright 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Do you mean the entire bunch grows upright? I've never seen a banana that wasn't growing "up" (though the overall bunches were hanging down).

[–]blckhl 10 points11 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you're really interested in growing it, Pineberry isn't some long-lost strawberry species, it's just a branded name for one of several similar cultivars of Garden Strawberry. Every strawberry you've likely ever eaten in America, Canada, and probably Europe has almost certainly been a variety of Garden Strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa), which in turn is a hybrid of two American strawberry species, Fragaria virginiana, a small, red, flavorful species native to virtually all of North America, and Fragaria chiloensis, a larger white species native to the Pacific coasts of North, Central, and South America.

In the US, you can get Pineberry Strawberry plants, other heirloom Garden Strawberry plants, as well as the two European strawberry species, the Musk Strawberry and the Alpine Strawberry at a variety of places scattered across the internet including this place.

You can also get accessions of a variety of underutilized and odd plant species that have been preserved at the National Clonal Germplasm Repository for Fruit and Nut Crops for free in most cases, again if you live in the US. I think they give preference to legitimate scientific work, and what they will send you is basically a live cutting of that plant, so you have to already know how to root it or graft it yourself.

Edit: I linked to the wrong NCGR page. This is the one that has strawberries

I actually know a guy that does this, he's who I bought miracle berries from when I tried them. He had star fruit, dragon fruit, and a bunch of stuff I don't remember the name of, all in his backyard. He had a greenhouse, too, but I didn't go there.

[–]webbitor 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Seems like Ice Cream is a more colloquial name for them, Blue Java being the other name. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Java_banana

[–]Team_Braniel 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Unfortunately no. We had them when we were in Hawaii. It was a smaller softer banana that tasted like vanilla ice cream. We found them at a few road side fruit stands.

[–]yopladas 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Perhaps you were eating Apple Bananas? A fully ripe one tastes something like vanilla-apple, they are small and grow in Hawaii... Though you could have eaten something entirely different, as Hawaii has countless variations of bananas.

[–]sirbriantheterd 9 points10 points ago

[–]simonjp 2 points3 points ago

I can fully understand why, but it's still a bit funny to hear of blackcurrants being exotic. Us Brits are brought up on them - well, on Ribena anyway.

I found a site where you can order seeds, but it's in German. From some breeders in Austria who cultivate these since about 70 years.

The fruits of the OP are something else though, it's a product of Dutch breeders (more info). The were available this spring at Waitrose in the UK, a pack of 125gramms (0.28lb) was sold for 3,99 £ (US$ 6.30).

[–]TheWingedPig 10 points11 points ago

Suspicions were compounded by the fact that the only store that was offering them for sale at the time, Waitrose offered a similar product- a banana-pineapple hybrid (pinanas), that was later revealed to be an April Fool's joke.

one of the European strawberries is white with yellow seeds, very small fruit, has two sets of chromosomes, and will typically not breed with the commercial berry due the commercial fruit having eight sets of chromosomes...the latin name for strawberries includes the word annanasa...which alludes to the pineapple flavor; by the way, the European wild type grows well in California and possibly in southeast, regenerating true to type, easily, from seed...

[–]sailingthestyx 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

the breeder who released this variety is a pretty cool guy; his cross is simply from the two wild types that got the whole commercial gig going in the first place 250 years ago...you can easily replicate the cross at home by buying a few plants of each, growing them out, and taking the pollen from one and transferring it to the anthers on the other...you can go either way...gather the seed and plant it out in your yard...see what comes up; it's pretty much that simple...

These are available in Japan as well. They are expensive. If I recall, it was more than $30 for 6 or so.

You're not alone. This happens for me with a few other things with "holes" too. Blegh, even thinking about it is starting to gross me out.

Apparently it isn't a recognized phobia. It's not in the dictionary. The article for it was deleted in wikipedia. Google Scholar has no hits either. Though I swear I have it too...maybe it falls under a broader definition of another phobia?

Anyone else remember reading in survival guides that ~99% of white berries are poisonous, ~99% of blue/purple berries are edible, and with red it's about 50/50. That's always stuck with me and as a result, these look lovely, but I'm just not inclined to eat them.

Why did you submit a photo only? Where is it being marketed in Europe? Who is growing them? Where does it grow in the wild?

More importantly, why the fuck didn't you link the source you took the photo from?

I studied abroad in London earlier this year when pineberries first became available. I remember being surprised that it was real seeing as it was announced on/around April Fool's Day.

It tastes kinda funky. Like a really sweet strawberry. I didn't taste any pineapple flavor and don't think it's anything to write home about. It's definitely a conversation starter though, so pick up a box if you can and show it to your friends. It's a little more expensive than regular strawberries but nothing too outlandish...
