Michael's unfettered hate for Toby is one of my favorite parts about The Office.

[–]TrevorJordan 548 points549 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The story is that Steve Carrell came to the set one morning during the 1st season and said, "I have an idea. I'm going to just start hating Toby."

But it makes total sense. HR is the Debbie-downer for a person like Michael.

[–][deleted] 78 points79 points ago*

I was watching the episode last night where Jim, Michael and Karen were all interviewing for Jan's job...

When Jim is in the interview and sees the note Pam left him, David Wallace is still talking "You'll love everyone who works here, except Kendall, our HR guy... He's just... just the worst."

Everyone hates HR, apparently

edit: Kendall.

I like my HR person (although it is a University), I liked the HR person and her predecessor at my previous job, and I liked the HR person at the job before that. But I'm a IT/IS guy, maybe us under-appreciated workhorses of the world just need to stick together.

Are you like the IT guy on the office, the one you see like two times. And then when he leaves no one knows his name. Is that you?

Kendall. Kendall is the HR guy for corporate.

...The fact that I instantly remembered that fills me with glee, pride, and shame all at once.

[–]trifthen 10 points11 points ago

My company gets around this by hiring nothing but smoking hot petite women for our HR department. They may have office politics, infighting, and drama galore, but I don't care. No straight man can hate an HR department full of hot chicks.

[–]klobbermang 298 points299 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not just that. Toby is (or at least was, not sure with the new owners thing) the only one in the office Michael technically has no authority over since Toby reports directly to corporate - not him. The one guy who can tell him what to do in HIS office.

Toby makes a joke walking out of the conference room and everyone laughs. Michael is a jealous bastard.

[–][deleted] 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think it's from the "Diversity Day" episode. Toby walks in with everyone else and says something like, "We don't have to sit Indian-style or anything do we?" Michael kicks him out. It makes perfect sense now that we know Michael hates Toby, but it came off as kind of harsh in that episode (which I think was the second episode of the series).

[–]linkdood 31 points32 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's based on a joke from the UK Office. They're all making sexual innuendos, then one guy gets kicked out of the conference room for making a joke no more offensive than any of the other jokes being made.

[deleted]

[–]charlesviper 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As a huge fan of Gervais and the UK office, I watched the first three or four episodes of of the US one (the ones which are a word-for-word reading of the original's script) and proclaimed, 'this is the dumbest thing ever'. About a year and a half later, I was asking a friend of mine why they liked the US office over the UK one if it was just the same humor with new actors.

I think a lot of people who don't like the show did what I did: they assumed that it was just a cheap remake and stopped watching. After four or five episodes, it really turned into something great (for two or three seasons, at least).

Either that or they are 'having a negative view on something popular makes my taste seem exquisite' jerk-offs.

[–]tiberone 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

(the ones which are a word-for-word reading of the original's script)

So by "the first three or four episodes," you meant "the pilot episode".

[–]Cyc68 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Totally agree. When the show was trying to re-create the British version it did suck a lot of the time. When they stopped that and started making their own show it got better very rapidly.

One of my favorite Toby/Michael scenes is in the 5th season in the episode "Moroccan Christmas".

Michael asks Toby for the number to a rehab clinic so he can "make a deposit" with Meredith. After Toby gives Michael the number, Michael takes the pen he was using to write the number down with and bounces it off Toby's face and walks away! I died laughing.

What I love is that, with Jim in a management position, he's now starting to hate Toby too

[–]EldestPort 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Which is weird (Jim's hate, not your love) because Jim hasn't really experienced any 'HR nightmares' yet (so far as we have seen) - which is the only reasonable explanation I can think of for Jim starting to feel like that.

[–]sthrmn 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Toby also likes Pam, and Jim caught on to it when Toby put his hand on Pam's leg (maybe earlier, can't remember), and then hopped the fence and left for Costa Rica. Also, that was the best exit ever.

My favorite part is that all managers hate HR. Jim starts to hate toby as soon as he becomes co-manager. When he's applying for the job at corporate, David tells him that he will like everyone at the office, except for this guy in HR.

[–]Pedgi 17 points18 points ago

Look maybe it's just me but I feel absolutely terrible when Michael rips Toby apart the way he does. It's one of my least favorite parts of the show. But god damn that doesn't stop me from watching.

[–]radiohead_fan123 20 points21 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Most of the time I feel sympathy for Michael in the show because he generally means well. However, I thought we saw a really dark and nasty side of Michael when he planted what he thought was weed in Toby's drawer and then called the police to get him fired. That was really crossing a line for Michael that he rarely crosses. It was more like something Jan would do.

[–]rayne117 26 points27 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Guess you forgot he tried to stop the cops from searching Toby after the cops where there.

[–]radiohead_fan123 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

hmm... yeah I don't remember that actually. So did he call the cops initially?

[–]rayne117 28 points29 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yep but once the cops came Michael was saying "Hey cops let's just call this whole thing off, it was probably a prank" before they found the marijuana. After they found the "marijuana" Michael said "It's mine I confess, it's mine!" and Dwight was shouting "No Michael!"

[–]sje46 15 points16 points ago

Jan? Maybe Ryan would do that.

[–]khamul 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]gizza 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's hard to say what Ryan would do. It's like he was a different character every season but they just couldn't be fucked getting different actors.

[–]captainlavender 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree. The sympathy he gets for being well-intentioned dries up when they show him caving and doing the expedient thing in difficult scenarios. I was personally squicked when he blames his "failed" discount idea on Dwight when it looked like someone was about to be fired. Guess he really is just a child, and sometimes children do mean things when they're scared.

[–]radiohead_fan123 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah. He was really brilliant though when he was negotiating his job back with Pam and Ryan (after they had set up their own company and taken loads of DM's clients). That was Michael at his best I think.

[–]captainlavender 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That scene did redeem him somewhat, as well as having one of my all-time favorite moments -- Michael accidentally lets the cat out of the bag by calling his company "worthless", but everyone who deals with Michael is so used to him using the wrong word that it's completely overlooked. Better than expected!

Can someone give an only occasional watcher of The Office some context? I know Michael hates him, but what causes that outburst?

[–]linkdood 38 points39 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Toby left the company at the end of Season 4, Michael is absolutely delighted at this. A few episodes into Season 5 he comes back, hence Michael's reaction.

[–]Clumpy 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Here's a more complete answer. The theory is that Toby, as the HR rep, represents the only real authority over Michael in the office. Michael hates oversight and HATES being rebuked because it threatens his very sense of self-worth, so he in turn hates Toby.

I think knocking the tray off of the table was probably the crowning moment of awful for the Michael/Toby thing.

[–][deleted] 23 points24 points ago

Toby left to live in Puerto Rico, and he came back due to an accident. Michael didn't realize he was back, and Jim told him to go look in the "Annex."

There are a lot of things in that video that I don't remember. When did Angela slap him, and when did he get in a fight with Ryan?

This show without Steve Carrel... awful.

[–]mattmentecky 28 points29 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If they try to replace Steve Carrel definitely awful, but I think they stand a SHOT at still being good if they just give Jim and Dwight more story.

[–]wurtis16 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think 3 episodes of Steve Carrel and his deranged cousin Zak Galafinakis going through interviews of the staff bob/bob style and getting him integrated would be a great replacement.

[–]ifiwasntintherapgame 2 points3 points ago

Zach Galifianakis would be the only suitable replacement.

Actually, the rumors are to replace him with Harvey Keitel, which would actually be awesome.

Just wondering how they're gonna work in full frontal....

I heard that they were considering Rhys Darby, who plays Murry from Flight of the Conchords.

I think he'd be almost as good as Carrel.

I just learned through your post that he's leaving the show, which is a huge shame, because I think Michael Scott is one of the funniest characters of any show ever...I'm from germany and have just discovered The Office this summer (here we have a different UK knock-off called "Stromberg", which is also really funny but drastically different), and I love it, I love it, I love it...I'm already at season 6 for the second time, that's how much I've watched it this summer, and it breaks my heart to hear that Steve Carell is going to leave.

Still, I don't agree that the show woud be awful without him. Yes, Michael is by far the funniest character on the show, but we're talking about one the funniest and freshest shows on TV anywhere, and even without Michael the show had so many unforgettable and hilarious moments that it would still be a great show overall...Certainly not one of the best anymore, but totally worth watching. It's not gonna anywhere as bad as Scrubs season 9.

Toby is the most human character on the Office.

[–]squackmire 59 points60 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Toby Flenderson.

Worse than 9/11.

Worse than the Holocaust.

A man so universally reviled that the medical world joined together and renamed AIDS a light case of the Tobies.

Women miscarry when he sneezes.

When Toby enters a room, the blind within can see for a few seconds. But it is not their surroundings that they see, it is their parents engaging in the raunchiest of sexual acts.

He eats dreams and shits nightmares.

He is truly of Cain's brood, ye who doubt. When God has forsaken ye and turned his face towards the heavens rather than towards his flock, it shall be the face of Toby that you will see and his voice that you shall hear. And ye, the end of days shall be upon us.

The best part of this comes after, though, when Dwight demonstrates why its a trick question because he could kill all three with one bullet through all of their throats. I love how the rest of the office is just like "Oh cool!" when he shows them.

Does anyone else find the American Office soul-crushingly depressing? I've known too many people like Michael and Kevin and Toby, who are just sad, dejected, lonely individuals who are down on everything and just keep failing for it to be funny.

[–]Verumero 101 points102 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Have you seen the British version? It's terrible! EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER is like that. They're all miserable and they seem to hate each other through the entire show. At least the American Office has little friendships and everyone seems to be good-hearted.

I've always found the British one to be far funnier. And I'm American. But yeah it's certainly harder to watch due to the soul-crushing awkwardness.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They watered down Michael's role to suit American audiences because of this. He was way to sad for Americans to find funny.

[–]tora22 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You noticed that too? Outside of the romances everyone in the british office is just varying degrees of dejected and boring -- well except for David of course. Still love the show.

Pfft. The american the office is dull and boring in comparison to the original. I haven't been able to se one whole episode from it because it hurts inside.

Seriously, I don't understand why the american the office has gotten so popular. It is not subtile anywhere. The humor just smacks you in the face all the time (lots of great one-liners though, but for me, that's about it)

As a general request, could people stop using tumblr for media hosting in reddit posts? It's blocked for me at work (I know I know) and at least one of my friends, while they haven't cottoned onto imgur and can't block youtube.

Plus, imgur is awesome. Why use tumblr?
