My wife has extreme allergies, she has tried all the drugs out there and the neti pot is the only thing that works for her.

Thank you. You've just convinced me to get one.

Remember to use the vacant stare as well when using the pot. Otherwise it's pointless.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points ago*

Use hand warm water and add salt so that it's saline solution. This way you don't feel a thing. Right angle is also important.

Funny fact: Indian yogis use their own urine to do this. It has right temperature, right salt concentration and it's sterile (urine is sterile unless you have bladder infection). Much more hygienic than using water from the river Ganges I guess.

[–]Timelines 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's sterile when it comes out. But I remember being told that it's a breeding ground for all sorts of things once it cools down and has been outside of the body for a while.

[–]selectrix 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Any kind of source for that?

[–]dylanrush 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Funny thing: I snorted my own urine during pledging for my fraternity, and it actually didn't feel like anything was wrong at all. When it went down my throat, it was a little less bearable.

I can personally attest to the merits of urine snorting.

Some drug stores will sell boxes of saline packets you can use. One packet to one cup of warm water (use wrist test like a baby bottle). The packets also contain baking soda as a mild disinfectant.

My neti pot came with the packets, and I can by refills from the same company.

[–]dylanrush 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You can also get saline packets at your local McDonalds for free.

[–]xyqxyq 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Regular table salt irritates the sinuses. The nasal rinse mix packets I have are made with sea salt, plus it has aloe vera extract to leave me feeling soothed, apparently. Also sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and sodium citrate + citric acid.

[–]monkeybreath 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you work out the right mix. Too much or too little is painful. The premixed packets take the guessing away.

But you are right, I should figure out the right measures myself. It would be much cheaper and less wasteful.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The packets that come with the rinse also have sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) in them. I don't know what that adds to the party, but is sure does work.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yep, it's exactly the best worst feeling in the whole wide world. You know how, if you've ever had problems with sinuses, you'd wish that there was something with which to just dig up there and clear them out?

There's your magic product. Seriously, sinuses have never felt better.

[–]SherryBobbins 0 points1 point ago

I would suggest you use it in the shower the first time. Water also comes out of your mouth.

[–]murf43143 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That has never happened to me.

[–]mooglespy 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It happened to me the first time, you gotta get the angle right.

I recommend using a neti pot especially to anybody who has allergies and wants to impress your drunken non-neti pot using buddies. It's very effective at both.

[–]monkeybreath 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I use it bent over a sink. It feels silly, but is effective.

[–]catrfelt 0 points1 point ago

I have extreme allergies too, but they're so extreme that it makes the neti pot unusable. :( Glad your wife found relief, though.

[–]FeastOfChildren 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My father has really bad allergies as well (the kind where you can't even get the saline solution to cycle through your sinuses).

He uses an industrial version of the above nelipot. It has a water pump that that seems to be more effective than simply pouring the solution into your nose.

Something like this.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

She also had that problem. She uses it after a hot shower when her mucus had been loosened by the humidity.

[–]wholemilk 0 points1 point ago

I'm the same. I actually tried again this morning and could only get water to go in one side... the other side wouldn't even let water flow in. fuck the world.

[–]Angry_Caveman_Lawyer 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That shit just doesn't work for me. I try it and all I get is a bunch of water running right back out the other side.

The only thing that has worked for me (twice now) is getting frigging tubes put in my ears.

edit: and by "right back out the other side" I mean the side the neti pot is in.

[–]lazy75 0 points1 point ago

Maybe if you're snorting in through your nose and spitting out your mouth.

I snort daily, but blow it right back out my nose. Using a neti pot goes much deeper.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thanks for that. I actually read a similar study when I was first getting into using it often. I decided that the risk of a sinus infection does not outweigh the allergy relief that I experience. Now, if I were getting sinus infections monthly, I would obviously reevaluate.

[–]deepestbluest 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Figured I'd chime in here: had a bad cold a couple weeks back, started using my neti pot (probably overusing it), and got a gnarly sinus infection. I wholeheartedly agree with that study - use with caution....also make sure to sterilize it

[–]pacoverde 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Strange. I've been doing this for probably two years, without a sinus infection - although I've never been prone to them. I use the squeeze bottle like this. I also make my own mixture of baking soda and salt.

I go running almost every day directly after sinus rinsing. Maybe that has something to do with it (running clears most of the salt water out).

Edit: Since I mix my own solution, I started experimenting using more than one packet worth. Now I use about two packets worth every day, which according to what I've read is another way to increase the potential for infection. Maybe I'm just lucky ;)

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've used a neti pot/nasal irrigation on occasion in the past and it has inevitably given me a sinus infection, every time, without fail. :(

They work. My wife has many allergies and no medication has worked better than this method. -- It makes you wonder what other eastern born medical practice us westerners are scoffing at / turning our noses up to.... acupuncture anyone?

[–]aposter 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Funny thing. They do scientific research on these eastern medical practices and alternative medicine, and when they find something that works, they call it medicine.

They have done research on "nasal lavage" and found that it does give varying degrees of treatment/comfort. They have done research on acupuncture and found that pretty much any benefits fall within random chance and placebo effect variances.

[–]ChortlingGnome 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

why is it bad if acupuncture still elicits results, regardless of how they come? Is there any downside to it? I know intelligent people who use acupuncture multiple times a year, to relax, help with hormonal balances, or other health issues. It obviously works for them.

Use warm water and add a pinch of salt. Cold unsalted water makes it feel like you are drowning and your sinuses will swell up. Warm salted water clears out everything. Not to be disgusting but globs slide out each time and it feels so clean after.

Make sure you use the saline packets (or a measure of salt : water) It sets the salinity to match (more closely) your body. -The most common reason for discomfort. (my wife has one and loves it) Yea for eastern medicine !

actually, snorting the water up into higher sinuses is exactly what you do once you get used to it. Up the shnoot, around the noggin, down the throat, and out the mouth. Not for the dinner table.

[–]knightofni451 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It doesn't go through any of your sinus cavities, it just goes across the back of your nasal septum at the front of the nasopharynx (the part of the throat that's actually above the mouth).

I bought one and tried it with a couple colds. It was effective at clearing out my sinuses, but only lasted for ~30 minutes.

Maybe I had a particularly bad cold - but in my experience they only offer very temporary relief.

[–]novagenesis 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh, same experience here. For me, it's worth the minute-or-two every half hour (when I have the option) to not feel like I have a head cold at all.

And I have no evidence whatsoever, but it seems like it shortens colds for me. I usually get past 90% of the cold in 48hrs with nothing but Vitamin C and a netipot. YMMV on that, I just do it because it makes me feel better and any illness-shortening could just be a very effective placebo.

I. FUCKING. LOVE. MY. NETI. POT. SO. HARD.

I used to get extreme sinus infections and I have a deviated septum from breaking my nose three times. Since I have been using a neti pot I have not had a bad sinus infection....in two years. It also makes me feel better if I am hungover...not sure if other people use it for that? I always use it first thing in the morning before I run. I kicked at 15 year every-day Claritin-D 24 habit with the neti. For those of you who think your allergies are too much for it, I recommend the squeeze bottle versions -- they break through more and clear out the sinuses more effectively. You will realize the futility of nasal sprays once you try / get used to this. Seriously, get off the drugs with water and salt: it's that easy.

I do not use that product specifically but yes, that's the type you want to try. Google Nasopure and order one of those -- also, 2 parts himalayan sea salt, one part baking soda in the mix you dissolve in the water = the same stuff they sell with this product. Works great for keeping you bug-free in the flu season if you use this once a day, kills anything that might decide to take root in your nasal passages. The regular Neti pot really didn't work well for me either, but got me started down the path: this Nasopure product has literally changed my life.

These are great, but I prefer the Sinus Rinse. That little bit of pressure makes a huge difference.

[–]g1ddyup 1 point2 points ago

A couple of my (pharmacist) professors swear by the Sinus Rinse. It makes sense from a physiological standpoint, too. Your body is already trying to flush out the nasal passages with a runny nose, so this just helps that process along. The pressure helps to actually get the water into the sinuses, cleaning them out too.

side benefit of sinus rinse: you get to show to bottle to your friends, and say, "That's how much water I flushed through my sinuses!"

I'm really lucky I have friends.

Seriously people buy one of these. Nothing and I mean nothing has ever cleared up my nose and sinuses like the Neti Pot. OK it feels a little strange running warm saline through your nose but trust me it's so worth it anytime your sick. My fiancee uses one for her allergies too.

i dont have sinus problems using the neti pot. just a little bit of warm salt water. no pills, no nothing.

do it for about 10 days the first time and then a follow-up of a few days annually.

it feels weird as hell in the beginning because a little of the salt water goes down your throat until you learn how to position your head properly.

would recommend to a friend.

[–]darkbeanie 0 points1 point ago

From reading the comments here, I've concluded that I'm an alien. I've tried using a couple different neti pots on numerous occasions, and the only times I've gotten them to work correctly is when my sinuses are fine and I have no need for one.

If my sinuses are clogged and I'd like to flush them, I can pour water into one nostril, but guess what -- the other one is CLOGGED. This means the water won't flow through it but instead flows out my mouth, an exit which requires no forcing from backpressure. I can pour water into the other clogged nostril, and this allows me to confirm that the water pressure flushing the first nostril did NOTHING to unclog it; instead it just expanded the sinuses temporarily. Again, the water therefore flows out my mouth. In the end, almost invariably nothing has changed except now my nose feels funny and my eyes are watering.

Almost invariably. I can report a couple times when the irrigation did seem to unblock my sinuses and get me breathing again. But, if you think this fixed the problem, then you clearly don't understand the nature of sinus congestion. The problem isn't the stuff in your nose, which this tool ostensibly helps to remove. That's a symptom. The problem is the histamine reaction that is producing the stuff in your nose, a reaction to stuff you're breathing from the air, which the irrigation does nothing to stop. Naturally, when it's worked at all I have found the effect to be short lived, and within a couple minutes, my sinuses were clogged again.

But then again, I suppose that my sinuses simply aren't human, and the magical neti pot principle must therefore not apply.

[–]SherryBobbins 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've heard that the irrigation is useless when your nostril is completely clogged. Which sucks, because that's when you could really use it. Have you tried it in the shower?

And while the problem isn't the stuff in your nose, sometimes it hangs around in greater quantities for longer than it needs to.

[–]illegible 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've heard it explained as a dried out (relatively) chunk of snot that blocks the upper sinuses from draining and starts to build up pressure, unclog it and allow the sinuses to drain naturally and you get rid of the pressure. Works fine for me.

incidentally, you may want to try it repeatedly and in conjunction with a heavy duty humidifier, when i get big blockage i may have to soak the clog with moisture before it will clear. The other thing i find helps is ditching the neti pot and using a bottle like this one: http://www.neilmed.com/usa/sinusrinse.php which i can force the solution through (while holding my throat shut)

My girlfriend would probably dump me if I didn't have one of these. I snore unbelievably bad if I don't neti pot before bed. Plus it feels really good, like you just swam in the ocean.

For anyone looking to buy one, there's definitely a "getting used to" period. It's a very foreign feeling and pretty uncomfortable the first few times. Just remember to start breathing from your mouth before you start poring it in your sinus. It'll make the valve in the back of your throat close and keep the salt water from going down your throat.

Dwight: No trades.

Jim: Come on, it's a shamrock keychain. Good luck.

Dwight: "A real man makes his own luck." Billy Zane. Titanic.

Jim: Look, it has sentimental value, Dwight. Can I buy it from you?

Dwight: No. I want it. I'm going to use it.

Jim: You don't even drink tea.

Dwight: True. But I get sinus infections, and sinus infections can be cured by making your tea from green tea leaf stems ..

Jim: Okay ..

Dwight: .. and pouring it directly into your nose, like so. [demonstrates]

Make sure you use kosher salt, or at least non-iodized salt. And close your nasal passage so water doesn't come out your mouth. And you can't be completely stuffed up when you try it. Once I got the hang of it, I did it four times in a row because it felt so good. It felt like my brain was lighter!
