My favorite is a stupid, non-worky phonetic one that somebody invented and then had to explain:

HOLY CRAP, I REMEMBER NOW!

Actually, I think "the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" is generally used more often because of two reasons: Usually this sentence is used when practicing to type fluently, so by typing the word "the" twice, it doubles your experience with typing the most used word in the English language. The second reason is that it just rolls off the tongue easier.

          Oh no...InDesign wasn't even a concept back then.

          Old Teletype machines (M15 & M20) wrote 72 columns wide on fanfold paper. The barber pole pattern was bold enough to make errors stand out. These machines were mostly mechanical and driven by asynchronous motors. Timing errors could be induced by improperly fitted parts (there was an art to fitting and assembly).

          On modern UNIX machines, you can use chargen to make the pattern on a console or other media. Line by line, all letters shift by one character so it's easy to spot a missing or erroneous character.

          My money would be on the Akita Inu, as it is the largest but other Japanese dogs such as the Shiba Inu and Shikoku Inu also look very similar.

          If you're in Central Europe at the moment, come to the Biennial of Design in Brno and enjoy posters with equivalents for Quick Brown Fox in about ten different languages, including Chinese and Japanese. (The Chinese one is a single character with all the language's strokes, rather than a sentence with all letters. The Japanese one was a sentence, though - or actually, a poem!)
