Topology joke. A rare thing, sadly.

I can explain the relevance of a cup of tea to topology, but I can no longer think why the poster would reference topology when it comes to Escher's cube.

A mug is often used as an introduction to the idea of manifolds and holes; you ask how many holes the mug has, people say "two", and you correct them, and explain how it's one, the hole created by the handle, and how it's logically equivelent to a donut or something.

[–]spikey1000 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In topology, a cube is the same as a sphere, because a sphere can be made into a cube and vice versa. I'm not sure if it was meant to be a topology reference though.

What I thought I saw is almost exactly what exists -- you have to look closely to see the difference (and I don't mean the comments and their scores).

I'm using IE 6.0, the browser that my employer provides on my computer that I use for work. Many sites have informed me it is out of date, but that never stopped my employer from using software once it's been paid for.

Atoms are mostly made of empty space. We're all on a tiny rock hurtling around the sun at 66,000 miles per hour. How can you sit in your chair without falling through it or being thrown off it?

[–]rawberry 20 points21 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Earth's gravity keeps me on it. Electromagnetic fields repel the empty-space-filled atoms enough so that they don't fall through. Elementary, my dear.

[–]zepolen 3 points4 points ago

What fucks with my mind is: Can we see things in the 2nd dimension as they have no height? Are there 2d beings that we will never know about since we cannot see them?

Likewise, if that is true, there could be 4d beings that will never see us because we have no 'height' in the 4th dimension.

[–]piratenaapje 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But wouldn't we be able to see the 4d beings in that case? Since they WOULD have a height, width and depth, along with some 4th dimension.

[–]zepolen 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yea, we should be able to see 4d and above objects whenever they pass through our dimension as weird shape-shifting objects. Makes me wonder about the clouds sometimes :)

[–]expectingrain 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If we were on 2 dimensions and a 3 dimensional object came in to our world, we'd only see it in 2 dimensions. Think of us living on a piece of paper and a finger intersects the paper. So if a 4d object came in to our world, we'd only see 3 of the dimensions, the last 1 would not only be hidden, but inconceivable.

[–]zepolen 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was referring to the way clouds seems to sometimes appear out of thin air and grow then seem to disappear again.

Look at the emulation of a human passing through 2d space:

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Suddenly, I understand why many refer to time as the fourth dimension. Just think of clouds and how they transform over time.

[–]dem358 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have this suspicion that I actually am a 4d object, it is just all these 3d sheeple that don't get it...

[–]devgeek0 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you are of the school of thought that time is a spatial dimension, then yes, everything around you, you are seeing its height, width, depth. You can only see it as of "right now", though, because we can't see in four dimensions. We can only see the cross-section of the fourth dimension in which we live.

In other words, if we COULD see in four dimensions, you would be able to see things all along their fourth-dimensional plane (or their timeline). But because we can't, we only see as they are at the instant in which we live.

[–]intheZenArcade 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This sort of idea was explained well in Slaughterhouse Five.

[–]robosatan 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Our mind does actually percieve 4 dimension in a sense (we can remember things in the past and predict events in the future), however the limitations of our perception to projections of 3 dimenions on the 2 dimensional surface of our retina makes actual 4d images hard to imagine (that's to say imagining a string of events as a single entity rather than a sequence of 3d events).

[–]devgeek0 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I hear this quite often, that the aspect of memory is a perception of a fourth spatial dimension. While it's true that we have the ability to retain somewhat of an "image", they are nothing but vague snapshots of previous cross-sections-- nothing even close to what existing "in" the four dimensions would be like.

[–]zepolen 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In a 2d flatland with 2d beings moving about in X and Y, where they were 1 minute ago is different from where they move to.

So is time really the 4th dimension? Or is time just our perception of the dimension above our current one, ie. for a 4th dimensional being, they would experience time as the 5th dimension.

[–]devgeek0 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This discussion assumes quite a bit. It's my understanding that most physicists don't even accept that time is a spatial dimension, rather, the universe consists of X number of dimensions (as determined by your flavour of string theory) + 1 non-spatial dimension of time.

I am far from a physicist, though.

[–]prunk 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The question though is whether or not they could see us.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, a 4th dimensional being would be able to see us. We just can only see them in 3 dimensions.

I was looking through the thread wondering why nobody had posted this yet. =]

[–]zepolen 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Neat, this brought another thought: Just as we 3d beings view other people in 2d. Those flat landers would 'see' in 1d, so everyone is just a line.

However they could 'construct' a 2d representation just as our brains do for 3d.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yea, they'd have to have at least two eyes to do it. Not just one like they have in the movie. In fact their eyes in the movie aren't placed well at all, they'd need to be on the very outer edge of their body and look outward.

[–]zepolen 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yep, I thought about that too.

I am watching the movie now and so far I think I'm getting 4d; part of the problem is fathoming just how HUGE the amount of 4d dimensions are in relation to us.

I would imagine 'seeing' in 4d could be emulated with an infinite amount of cameras pointed at a 3d cube. If you could process all those pictures at once, every single state of rotation it could possibly be in simultaneously, you'd have an idea of what 4d is like.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Check out these videos:

http://www.vimeo.com/13831859

http://vimeo.com/1398634

This guy takes videos and processes them so that the 3rd dimension and the 4th dimension (normally called time) are swapped. The result is something that is somewhat familiar yet very very odd.

[–]zepolen 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Those are great videos, and to think, that's what a single 'line' of our world looks like in its infinite phases.

[–]timewarp 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Can we see things in the 2nd dimension as they have no height?

Yes. The text you are reading now has no height.

[–]zepolen 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Don't the pixels that block the light have height? If they had zero height, would the light still be blocked?

Consider a piece of paper, if you put it flat in front of a light source, it casts a shadow, but if you turn it so that the thin edge is in front of the light towards your eye, it is barely visible.

[–]timewarp 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

For the purposes of your perception, the pixels have no height. If you want to get technical, matter doesn't exist in only 2 dimensions. You can't have something with 0 height.

[–]prunk 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Depends on the angle of their projection. Imagine a piece of paper flat in front of you. You can see it. Now rotate it 90 degrees in the "horizontal" plane so that now you see the edge of the paper which for a 2d object wouldn't exist so we wouldn't see it. Now If we were forced by some law of physics (such as electrons traveling at perpendicular paths to magnetic fields) to travel at right angles to the viewpoints of 4d creatures we would be invisible. If we weren't forced to move as such then we appear like a rotating paper with crazy stretchy dimensions due to projected angles.

The camera focus throws me a little, but other than that awesome.

[–]benpeoples 25 points26 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The camera focus makes it -- it's ambiguous if that point is in front of the plane of focus or behind it. If it were a traditional cube, it would be out of focus there. If the corner were missing, the rearward corner would also be out of focus. If it were in between (e.g., in plane with the corners), it'd be in focus, but it's not...

[–]Aldrenean 6 points7 points ago*

Yes, the depth of field enhances the illusion, but it's overdone, the center ball looks as out of focus as the box in the background. Makes it look like it was blur-brushed in photoshop.

im a visual person by trade.. and even though i photoshop almost everyday.. and knew it had to be either shopped or 3dsmax'd -- i still choked on the air i was breathing for a minute with my arms in the air-- pretty much reverted me back to being a monkey for an entire 2 minutes. thanks.. sincerely.. its good to get in touch with the roots sometimes

I actually thought it was a photo, and was trying to figure out how he took the picture to make it look that way.

then the source shows it's photoshop...should have really known better.

I too thought it was a photo of a possible structure. While thinking how nice it looked, I was busy planning to construct it on my hyperbolic 5d lathe.

I could make a real one of those, just add 3 extra bars to the nearest corner and cut their ends in a curve to match the part they should look like they are touching. Photograph with a telephoto lens and avoid depth of field by using a small aperture.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Isn't this just a play on perspective? Wouldn't there be a skewing of the lines proportionate to the distance which are instead being illustrated as straight lines in order to pull off the illusion, and isn't this more just about tricking our eyes than making any kind of meaningful statement?
