Sad video or saddest video?

[–]trel 37 points38 points ago

From the comments.

With no disrespect intended...

while most look forward to walking with Jesus when they go, I think I'd rather walk with Big Bird

Thank you Kermit...

Oh god, his voice cracks and everything. I need to go call my best friend and tell him how much our friendship means to me...

Watch Frank Oz's video at the same ceremony. Awesome story, even greater impact of the last line

From the same ceremony, the most heartbreaking, uplifting three minutes any of us are likely to witness.

Also, perhaps the truest mark of the man is the legacy he left in his work and the gentleness and care he brought out in his friends and colleagues.

We miss you, Mister Hooper.

No picture of Jim Henson can make me sad. That man did more good and touched more lives than most of us could do collectively. I will probably die not having contributed anything to the progression of human life and that is what I would call sad.

I remember seeing an incredible poem about Dr. Seuss right after he died (I can't seem to find it on the internet) but it was titled something like, "My best friend Dr. Seuss Died Today" and it was like this photo, inspiring and touching.

[–]briangilmore 16 points17 points ago

Andoo, you're 100% right. Sadness isn't what he wanted out of people, so we're betraying his memory if we focus on the negative. People weren't even allowed to wear black at his funeral, so let's not do it here.

Also, this sad muppet comic came into mind... related... even though it fuels the fire.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Don't be such a negative Nancy. Your life and everything you do effects everything around you, like ripples in a pond. The kindness you show, teaching your kids math or science or the arts. In a thousand years your actions might indirectly cure cancer or establish a colony on Venus.

[–]roark7 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

what's sad is that you made this about yourself

[–]saywhaaaaaaa 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I will probably die not having contributed anything to the progression of human life and that is what I would call sad.

I may not have a memorial service quite like Jim Henson's with muppets and singing, but I can try to work toward it (maybe not the muppets, that's probably unlikely). And I guess it helps to stipulate in advance that no one wear black to your funeral or memorial services, and to write down stuff like this: "Please watch out for each other and love and forgive everybody. It's a good life, enjoy it."

[–]Pufflekun 37 points38 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Or you can be happy just having fun with your life, and not caring that you're not going to contribute anything to the progression of human life.

Not everyone can be content with such an attitude, of course, but once I realized that I don't have to do anything significant with my life if I don't want to, I became infinitely happier.

[–]thespacebase 32 points33 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You know, this was a man who made and played with puppets. He did what he was into, and his contribution came naturally.

Basically, relax. If you want to do something, make it work. Maybe it'll be a major contribution, maybe you'll just make really good coffee.

this a million times. the amount of suffering that people create for themselves because they feel the need to have lofty goals is staggering. i have friends who have not been truly happy their entire adult lives because of this. being content and letting that contentment really permeate your life makes such a huge difference.

By 2 a.m. on May 15, 1990 he was having trouble breathing and began coughing up blood. He suggested to Jane that he might be dying, but did not want to bother going to the hospital. She later told People Magazine that it was likely due to his desire not to be a bother to people.

This was from two seasons ago or so. That season also had Tina Fey and Paul Rudd among other very cool celebs. But I have to say that was the last good season. If you've watched the absolute newest season (or two, I can't remember), you'd be very disappointed. Not only is the last 15 minutes dedicated to Elmo (Elmo's World) but there's a 10 minute CGI short called Abby's Flying Fairy School, another 10 minute claymation short called Bert and Ernie's Great Adventure, which completely lacks the charm of the real Bert and Ernie, and another 10 minute thing with Murray Had a Little Lamb. So, it doesn't leave much of the "old" Sesame Street there. You're lucky if you hear the alphabet.

Sorry, that may have come across a little rantish.

Edited for typos.

During a family vacation at Disney World my dad noticed that Jim Henson was having breakfast a few tables away from us. The restaurant was virtually empty and my dad told us to go ask for his autograph. I was about 8 and my sister 12, we were both to shy to go and ask him and just sat there feeling bashful. It wasn't but a few months later that he died.

Thanks a lot dad!

Damn, I had never seen this, thank you. Back in elementary school I read his biography because when I learned he created the muppets, Sesame Street, and the Muppet Movie I owed it to him and myself to read his biography. Upon reading that he had passed away a few years earlier, I was sad and remember I had a lump in my throat. At the time I was just 8, having arrived to the US a 3 years earlier and at the time felt I mastered English thanks to watching these shows :)

[–][deleted] 27 points28 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Jim Henson and Mr. Rogers helped me learn English too. I actually remember watching them in the hotel the first few days I was in America.

[–]FANGO 19 points20 points ago

I surprised the hell out of my parents by learning to read years earlier than I should have, and I attribute this to watching wayyy too much Sesame Street as a kid.

[–]HighInsights 3 points4 points ago

Same here; my folks have certainly agreed that Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers gave me a huge jump start on learning.

[–]V2Blast 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, I didn't really surprise my parents by becoming a proficient reader early, but that's because they encouraged my watching so much Sesame Street. And I watched a lot of Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood, too.

Caroll Spinney (Big Bird) was the commencement speaker at my brother's college graduation. Sesame Street has done more for education worldwide than probably all of the government run departments combined.

[–]briarios 20 points21 points ago

I'm old enough to remember the episode where Mr. Hooper's death is explained to Big Bird. The way they handled that episode was pure genius, and totally daring for television at the time. They treated kids like thinking people. Not looking down on kids is part of the great success of Sesame Street.

[–]eternalkerri 4 points5 points ago

After watching the link for 'Big Bird at Jim Henson's Funeral' I watched the rest of the clips from his memorial service. I teared up and remembered watching it when I was little not quite understanding... but realizing when I asked my parents about a month or so later why 'Kermy's' voice had changed.

However your link had me crying like a fool. I had forgotten how real Jim Henson had made his characters for children. When I think of Kermit the Frog I don't think of a puppet but an actual being that I loved as a child.

Thank you for posting this link.

it'd be even more disturbing if Frank Oz was in the picture as well, with his hand crammed up in any one of these Miss Piggy's.

One of Franks pictures makes him look like a famous Analrapist.

Or maybe happy in a sad way.
I can't quite decide.

Watched the Muppet movie on the plane the other day.

Why did Kermit leave the swamp he loved?

"To make millions of people happy"

Jim succeeded in that goal as well.

A personal favorite of mine is the Rabbit of Seville. I actually went to see the opera becuase I loved this cartoon so much. Conclusion: Rossini has nothing on Jones.

Even the music, was just so much more exciting, energetic and moving in the cartoon. Yup, hats off to you Mr. Jones, my hat is off.

'What's Opera Doc' is by far a classic cartoon in my book. As many times as I've seen it I still get amazed when watching it that a silly clip about a rabbit and a hunter can be so powerful.

I have never watch sesame street, but every time i see the funeral for Jim Henson, it brings a tear to my eye. Just knowing that a man could bring so much joy to so many people gives me a bit more hope that our childen will be raised more educated for him. I did watch Fraggle Rock though and enjoyed it so much.

Rock solid proof that there is no God. What possible reason could there be for a man like this to go so early? Dick Cheney's still around and a man that made millions cry laughing gets the short end of the stick. God wanted Muppets I guess.

It saddens me that he died 2 weeks before I was born. I've seen the shows he's done and I have learned a lot from watching his creations. But I will never know what it was like to walk this earth with Jim Henson. :(

It is sad that Kermit has to revisit emotionally the sexual violations he was subject to on a regular basis....

Yeah, horrible joke I know, but it keeps me from thinking of how much I really miss the old Muppet movies...heh, I just discovered that Firefox spellchecker reminds you that Muppet is a proper noun and deserves the respect of the capitol M.

His funeral was "an epic and almost unbearably moving event." That's not too high to aim for as funerals go.

The Street was the only thing my mom would let me watch on TV. Of course the only other options were Mr. Rogers, ZOOM and The Electric Co., and that was just to wild back in the day.
