It's a joke. There was an ad campaign with this slogan, but it was all universally bad things. Like a picture of a girl crying, that said "getting paid $10 for sex isn't normal, but on meth it is". 4chan picked up on it, and started photoshopping it on all kinds of random pictures.

[–]Mourningblade 28 points29 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I hated those ads. They just made me feel bad.

They were also extremely dishonest.

Hey, how about an ad campaign with a little boy crying. Maybe with a caption like, "Fearing God will never forgive you for being molested isn't normal...but with Catholicism it is."

Or better yet, show a skinny white guy implicitly going down on a tattooed guy: "Going from a full-ride scholarship to being someone's bitch in prison for 5 years isn't normal...but in the drug war it is."

Wait, that one's accurate.

The first poster idea made me D: irl. I didn't even know my face could do that. Those posters should be made and hung up everywhere in the world.

[–]Mourningblade -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Except they'd be no more true than the Meth Project's posters.

If you wanted a true poster, maybe something like a little boy crying with the caption, "Hiding and protecting child molesters isn't normal...but with Catholicism it is."

Said nothing about leaving the church, the comparison was to molestation.

As for methamphetamines: yes, there are well-understood bad results that are possible from their use, but to characterize them as "normal" is to overstate the case.

Only considering non-perscription use, most people who use meth will use it 2-3 times and that's it. Some will use it off-and-on and never have trouble with it. A small fraction of the meth-using population will develop a problem with it and use to excess; another fraction of the population will already have serious problems they are escaping using meth (or they are switching to meth because it's cheaper, similar to crack).

With Catholocism and molestation, the vast majority of children will never be molested.

As a reductio, since it sounds like you're an atheist: which would be a better tactic to help convert someone away from Catholicism... a) if you don't, you'll be molested, b) no proof of God's existence, you could do better things with your time and effort to make the world a better place.

What typically happens is 6 months of extreme productivity and on-top-of-the-worldness, followed by a lifetime of misery and addiction.

It's more like too scared to continue. Enough drugs that cause psychosis tend to scare the shit out of most people. Takes about 3 months actually, then most users quit. The ones that made it that far. Those of us that made it 6 years? I'd say we were brave. And stupid.

they keep the dosages pretty low on stuff like that, in comparison to the amounts people use to get high. still, if users of the prescription drugs are acting paranoid or having psychotic episodes, maybe they shouldn't use those prescription drugs. you'd have to gauge it on a case-by-case basis.

This is the combination of a playful non-deterrent and a wholly misleading ad for so many reasons.

Drug deterrents shouldn't mislead and say "you'll see chewbacca" when we're talking about a stimulant and not a hallucinogen. As soon as someone tries meth and doesn't hallucinate, then they won't trust any other deterrent propaganda anymore.

Isn't telling people that their skin will get splotchy, they'll lose their teeth, etc enough of a deterrent?

Honestly, the Faces of Meth drug deterrent program was probably the simplest and best I've seen.

Why would meth make this normal? I guess if they did excess amounts and entered into amphetamine psychosis it COULD be some sort of delusion, although in my years as an EMT most resultant psychoses were usually just paranoid about the police or military, helicopters, following them, whatever.

[–]havespacesuit 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Read the like fifty (exaggeration: two) responses saying that sleep deprivation is what causes the hallucinations, although the paranoia sure helps with the freak-out factor.

[–]robeph 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sleep dep can cause hallucinations, but...I've never seen this in the field (insofar as it being represented as such or even recognized as disruptive hallucination/delusion) from meth. Meth heads, regardless of the tv created horrors of users, don't usually go on 1 week benders without sleep. I mean even high on the drug I imagine that becomes uncomfortable. All I know is what I've come across in the field, talked to the users, watched them OD,freak out, or whatever, it is a nasty drug, but it is so very very very far from what they suggest in these anti-drug ads.

[–]MethIsOverrated 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I made this throwaway account to defend meth.

Meth is way overrated. It really isn't that bad, it just has very uncool image because of all the dumb rednecks that abuse it. It's not that addictive, the whole "meth teeth" is a silly myth, and it doesn't alter your personality all that much. In mild doses, there is a feeling of euphoria coupled with a urge to be productive (individual results may vary).

Much less harmful than alcohol, by a long shot.

I use meth a few weekends a year. Usually to enhance sex, but sometimes to get a lot of work done when I have a pressing deadline. I stroll into the office on Monday morning feeling fresh as any other day.

I've had friends who basically became sub-human once they started using meth. They weren't necessarily addicted, but they "saw nothing wrong with it" and when they were using they were incredibly self-destructive. And they are completely untrustworthy.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You just made me read a lot about meth. Since I have known enough addicts who have developed dental and skin issues I wanted to find out why. Apparently lack of hydration and bad hygiene is 75% of it. The rest is mostly obsessive picking, scratching, and tooth grinding. Apparently if you religiously drink water, remember to shower and brush your teeth, and can keep yourself from picking at acne and other wounds you will be fine. The more you know...

[–]aesimpleton 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The danger isn't occasional use, but addiction. Substance-Induced psychosis is most certainly not a myth, and it will fuck your life right up. What's more, meth can and will destroy your teeth if you smoke it often enough.

Most drugs are fine in small doses, even heroin, but the problem comes from people who can't control their intake. Most people can't and advertising it without acknowledging the danger is stupid and counterproductive to the legalization movement.

[–]blahaoeu1234 -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Many of my friends in college did loads of meth and today they're fine (and I'm not talking prescribed smart drugs, I'm talking about snorting crystal meth bought off the street). I've read all the horror stories, but seriously, people ruin their lives with video games, food, and bad relationships. I don't think meth or any other drug is any worse in the wrong hands.

[–]MegaRouge 2 points3 points ago

[–]Feifner 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You are a fool. Video games, food, and bad relationships don't get you addicted on the first or second try. They also don't have the ability for you to overdose or for your teeth to fall out. Just because a couple people you know were able to do meth and turn out fine doesn't make it the same as video games or food. If you look at the number of people who can play video games and still have a functioning life compared to the people who can do meth and have a functioning life you will realize the difference. People have to go through rehab for meth which can take months, and it will be the worst time of their lives. People who want to stop video games or eating unhealthy just have a small urge to go do that activity.

Meth isn't very addictive and it doesn't make your teeth go bad.

You are the victim of some serious confirmation bias. The reason you believe all of these fallacies about meth is because you haven't met any productive and normal meth users with good teeth. What is saying is analogous to observing an alcoholics anonymous meeting and concluding that everyone that drinks a beer will become desolate addicts.

[–]lmbrjck 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You don't know many meth heads I take it. It's true that with some restraint, one can use meth and not become addicted. Above you claimed that you've done it and haven't become addicted, as have I, and I've been fine. On the other hand, I've also known many people who have not been so lucky, and it has gone from an occasional user to full blown addict. I feel that it is incredibly naive to claim that meth is not that addictive. Smoking meth, or mainlining it, makes you feel like you're on top of the fucking world and many people just want to keep that going, probably due to other psychological issues, but that's why many people start/continue to use drugs anyway. And meth teeth is not a myth. If you smoke meth regularly, there's a good chance that you won't have good oral hygeine, and your teeth will get fucked up.

Fallacies about meth?

You are a dumbass if you think Meth isn't addictive. Just because you can control yourself doesn't mean it isn't addictive for other people.

Okay, you got me, Meth doesn't cause your teeth to go bad. It causes your mouth to get extremely dry which can in turn cause your teeth to go bad. You have good teeth because you use it occasionally, not constantly like the meth users you probably don't associate with.

I never said everyone who uses meth has rotten teeth and is going to die, so I am not saying something analogous to alcoholics. I was saying that the chances of abusing meth are a lot higher than the chances of abusing video games, food, or even alcohol.

You are preaching that meth is okay to use because it hasn't caused you any problems. You probably even know a lot of other people that are able to use meth for recreation. You probably don't have much interaction with the people who I am talking about, because they suck to hang around with. Most college students don't have problems with alcohol, and they probably don't associate with alcoholics too often. They realize that alcohol has a horrible side to it. Get the hell out of your own world and realize that abusing meth is far more common than you think.

First of all, I'm not saying that meth is okay. It's a drug. You can use it responsibility and have fun, or you can abuse it.

All I'm saying is that most people believe all sorts of ridiculous misconceptions about it. I'm one data point that says "hey look, meth doesn't fuck my life up!" which is sufficient information to make you, and everyone else, reevaluate what you think you believe to be true.

Also, addiction is subjective. Some people have addictive personality disorders. These people will sacrifice hygiene, their job, friends, family, and quality of life just to experience a few moments of euphoria. Put any drug near these kinds of people and they will abuse it to no end.

That said, there is no way you can possibly back up the statement "the chances of abusing meth are a lot higher than the chances of abusing video games, food, or even alcohol." How would you even go about measuring that? Do you want to compare the number of overweight people versus the number of meth addicts?

I'm not overweight and I hate video games. Addiction is a personality disorder.

While I agree that there are many people with addictive personality orders abusing drugs, meth amphetamine is a drug with a far higher potential for physical addiction due to the fact that meth floods various reward circuitry in the brain with dopamine. This action greatly affects brain chemistry and creates a dependency in a similar fashion to the physical addiction caused by opiates and nicotine. Someone below commented that more people who try nicotine become addicted than people who try meth. I am sure a lot more people try smoking than people who try meth and so this is proportional. I have been around for a while and have seen and done a lot of drug related things. I have seen people go to prison and I have seen people die. I can confidently say that Crystal Meth is not a drug worth getting into. There are far more worthwhile and enlightening chemicals out there in both the tryptamine and phenathylemine families. Meth is really just ephedrine thats been stripped down a bit with some solvents and iodine. There are much cooler things you can extract with solvents and iodine, get a copy of phikal and see for yourself.

Yeah, I think the meth mouth is actually a result of bad hygiene and being malnourished, not meth itself.

I was at this game. Tigers Vs. Dodgers 5-21-10 in L.A. It was the 30th anniversary of Empire Strikes Back. They had ESB things on the scoreboard all night. I even have the poster they were giving out.

The pic is of Chewbacca throwing out the first pitch.

Are they serious? It's a good thing kids know that adults lie and exaggerate like crazy to them or we'd see a fucking meth explosion with this ad.
