I suspected it when I saw his shadow.. but I'd thought I was at the end of the comic. I said to myself "Something's wrong with you for assuming the worst... look, it clearly says he's coming to read a bedtime story." "Oh wait, there's more"

Scroll. Confirmed. Powerful powerful comic

[–]Radica1Faith 22 points23 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You were assuming the worst because it's a well made comic. Portraying the dad as an ominous shadow, the girls facial expression going from angry and apathetic to a more defeated and slightly frightened look, all subconsciously led you to arrive at precisely the conclusion the creator wanted you to.

[–]BILLYBOB817172 15 points16 points ago

A more obvious tip off was the next frame after the "bedtime story" she has her pajamas opened up a little more. Pretty fucked up.

[–]basicchannel 4 points5 points ago

I had the same reaction! At first I thought "child abuse." Then I thought "Are you so paranoid and conditioned? Are all adults around children automatically predators? You spend too much time on the internet, sir."

Then I got to the end, and the comic evoked the intended emotions. Geez.

Holy shit :(.

The "mimi the chipmunk" connection is made pretty clearly, but what about the name "rippyfangs the werewolf"? I feel like there's something I'm missing there, apart from the werewolf metaphor.

[–]deusnefum 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Rippy / rapey is my best guess.

There's also, like you said, werewolf metaphor. At night a man goes from human to monster.

Plus there's the whole Red Ridding Hood thing. Red riding hood is a cautionary tale for young girls to avoid wolves (men) who want to take their virginity.

I love the attention to detail in that comic. In the last panel, the dad looks like the wolf, and Clarissa looks like the chipmunk.

Quite depressing though.

[–][deleted] 27 points28 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, they kind of have to, since that drawing is Clarissa's cry for help.

What's most heartbreaking is her desperate "ME ME! Get it?"(Mimi) appeal to her teacher, and how the teacher completely misses it. I'd prefer to remain optimistic that one day someone will notice.

[–]ProofisinthePudding 56 points57 points ago

Did the stuffed animals commit suicide or were they just escaping? :(

[–]Enfors 63 points64 points ago

A stuffed animal is supposed to bring comfort to a kid. But this one coulnd't protect her, so perhaps that's why she threw it out.

[–]jdrc07 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think it's the other way around. The imaginary friends leaving is happening in her own head, so it's not so much that people are abandoning her later in life it's that she is afraid that people will abandon her later in life, even though it's obviously not true, because of the psychological trauma. If you think about it, a stuffed animal can never leave a person, just as nobody would decide to abandon a friend after they discovered they were abused. So I think the stuffed animal is just there to represent the friends that she doesn't allow herself to have, rather than friends that would abandon her, or whatever.

Anyways, very interesting comic. Makes you think.

that's what I thought, and I thought that the stuffed animals on the ground were past sex-toys.

In a way I'm glad it didn't turn out like that.

[–]Enfors 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Right. The bunny failed to bring her comfort - she was raped with the bunny sitting right next to her. So, since the bunny didn't do what it was supposed to, she rejected it. As she had done many times before with other stuffed animals.

[–][deleted] 124 points125 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

She imagines that they don't want to be in her room after witnessing what happens in there, so she throws them out.

[–]deusnefum 93 points94 points ago*

Yeah, I believe it's called projecting. She can't stand it and wants to escape so that's what she makes her stuffed animals do.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

no man, it's worse than that. it's her undone clothing, her uncaring mother, and the wide open eyes...

It's quite an appalling comic. Bravo.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't know if the comic itself is "appalling". I would have described it as maybe "darkly witty", or "thoughtful", or that it touches on very serious issues while appearing to be a childish strip, that it portrays a childhood and the lack thereof succinctly for some unfortunately very real victims of sexual abuse.

[–]nobody_really12345 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Don't get me wrong, it's amazingly well done. I've never been so disgusted from a few panels before... I always associate comics with innocence, and having it destroyed like that, well...

The comic evokes strong emotion, therefore it is art... and art doesn't have to be liked, if it's well done...

[–]liquidsnake06 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah definately, I started to read through the comments, and some people were saying how they had to re-read it. So I did, then I noticed the state of the little girl's hair after her dad 'read her a bed time story'. then the :'( followed the :(.

It's hilarious at times. Nabokov is a very comedic author and makes Humbert Humbert out to be, at times, sympathetic. The shock is that you catch yourself thinking this and laughing and you remember, oh right, this guy is fantasizing about 9-14 year olds (not Nabokov but the character).

There's a great quote by Nabokov about the book which goes something along the lines of, "Art, by its very nature, is shocking. It should be something truly original and therefore unexperienced"

[–]Sticks45andStones 11 points12 points ago

After reading the commands and explanations (I did get it first go, though) I'm surprised no one has mentioned it. The mother has the same scowl as the daughter in the first panel. I find that the most telling part, that child sexual abuse is a timeless and established tragedy in the world.

[–]Walls 3 points4 points ago

Thank you. The comics reveal an extremely complex system of abuse, abuser, victim, denier, and a nice coating of slick maple syrup covering it all up in fear and denial. It is the most complex one I've ever seen and I can only read it when I'm up to it.

What kills me is that there is no hope of rescue. Her mother permits the the abuse, and the teacher is too fucking stupid to cop a damn thing. All throughout it is the fact that it is blatant that there is something wrong with this child, that she is unhappy and angry and full of rage. But no one will ever help her, and she will end up just like her Mum.

My partner suffered through this as a child, up voted.

Note: Its not always the father but is typically someone close to the family. Another reason Conroys "save the children" internet filter here in Australia is wrong.

[–]FluffySauce 5 points6 points ago

That's very true. You also tend to see these things in cycles of "inheritance" as it were. One of my former partners was molested by her brother, who had been molested by a neighbor in a football league. What was even harder to witness was the way her abusive parents(who were themselves children of abusive parents) behavior began to rub off on her -- it was heartrending to see those same patterns developing in her.

I agreed with everyone wishing they could unread this at first, but then I thought about it and now and I don't want to unread it anymore ...

I want to post it every where.

For me(us?), this strikes a cord because the I consider my "inner child"(that child), my memories of childhood, my hopes and dreams as my aspirations for who I want to be.

I want pedophiles to read this.

I want them to look at their hopes and dreams; who they want to be.

I want them to look at their cock/cunt and think about this.

[–]nusuth 196 points197 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well the general point is that the dad has abused her at least that many times.

Depending on how bleak you want to be in your interpretation: She imagines her stuffed animals as living things in an unconscious effort to maintain the innocence and happiness of a normal childhood. But she can't consciously and intentionally allow herself to participate in this fun because she knows what's soon going to happen. After it does, her imagination retreats in the face of the horror and she throws the toy out the window. She acknowledges the death of her childhood by discarding the totems of childhood.

[–]anonymous1 30 points31 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think it is quite intriguing that your interpretations don't account for an actual magical bunny.

Also, remember that the mother is part of the story as well. It appears that the mother is a flight attendant and, to boot, she drinks. Note that the mother looks despondent, but she glows when she hands her daughter the toy.

Now, there are two paths: 1) the mother knows or 2) the mother doesn't know

From there, regardless of whether she knows or not, readers could learn a lot from the mother's motivation in giving these toys. Does she feel like a bad mother because her husband abuses the child, or is she making a feeble attempt to connect? What could the mother's motivation be?

Finally, imagine an actual magical bunny. A bunny that died falling out the window. A magical animal that essentially committed suicide itself rather than deal with the child abuse. Or perhaps the bunny thought it would be OK.

man

[–]nusuth 38 points39 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah I just chose one possible interpretation. I could think of a few more. It really depends on how bleak you want to make it.

Mom might know, and provide a steady stream of toys in an attempt to assuage her guilt and shame over not doing anything about it because she feels powerless. Her desperate need for his love and approval force her to overlook his heinous actions and choose between her helpless child and her own selfish desire to feel loved. And her child always loses. The booze helps medicate her crushed self-esteem and the inescapable path of self-criticism which consistently reaches the only possible conclusion: She is a monster.

Or she might not know, and she drinks because she's trapped in a loveless marriage with a distant man who hasn't touched her in years, and her daughter is disengaged and emotionally inaccessible. She's been told her whole life that the happiest thing you can do as a woman is marry a man and have kids. Instead she's isolated and miserable. That slowly unraveling lie, told to her by her family, her friends, her church, fuels a steady decline into alcoholism and self abuse.

I wouldn't think there's enough to read into the bunny itself being magical, but lets say that Clarissa does indeed possesses the power to bring stuffed animals to life. Even though she knows they can't change anything, she continues to animate each toy her mother brings home in the vain hope that perhaps one might bring her a small moment of joy in her otherwise grim existence, only to watch one after another commit suicide rather than serve as the sole witness to the experience she endures day in and day out. And every night she's reminded of the bitter joke that god has played on her, giving her the tremendous power to bestow life on others, while leaving her powerless to stop the relentless piecemeal debasement and degradation of her own.

I thought I was painting a dark enough picture as it was, but you asked for it man.

As MagType said, you have a very nice structure to your writing. Lends itself at least to fiction, I wonder what it does to nonfiction.

[–]nusuth 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

FWIW, I don't think she's a flight attendant. The hat and coat are actually pretty classic Jackie Kennedy. The hat seems uniformly round, and you'll notice it's a long coat, not a blazer with a skirt. She also has no name tag, and there's no luggage around.

I took her outfit to be emblematic of an upperclass housewife.

This is the impression I got as well. I thought it was a symbol of a wife who looks the other way. May be reading too deep though.

[–]stupidly_intelligent 17 points18 points ago

To put in my two cents, I think the answer is 2, and for two reasons in fact.

1) She seems depressed, not worried

2) Her profession is one that she spends a lot of time away from home.

The reason I found for the depression over worried idea is the switch she has from one panel to the other. She goes from super smiling mother/flight attendant, to one of the most saddening faces I have seen in a while. It's not a type of worry for her as she walks away, its a switch from happy mask, to sad state of being. This is made much more prominent by the sudden switch between a couple of panels in the second strip.

The reason why I think she doesn't know due to her profession is pretty simple; she spends a lot of time away from home, giving the father plenty of time to do what he wants without notice. This is further compounded by a couple of frames however. It's the two frames that show how the entire ordeal of what the stuffed animal had to sit through, took a extended period of time. Something that the mother would notice very easily if she were there.

Though, there can be plenty of other reasons you can throw either way.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I thought that the mother's sullenness stemmed from the depressing state of her relationship with the father. I assumed that the father, being otherwise inclined, was not attracted to the mother. That plus, being an abusive personality, he may mistreat the mother in some way as well.

[–]nobody_really12345 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

but she's not truly beaming when she gives the toy. If she were, it would be residual in the following frame, but it's a full-on "fuck it" face. The mom has been complicit for so long, that she's checked out, and gone to a place in her head where she doesn't care.

This is a masterpiece of subtleties, I think... but I've said it before already.

[–]cartopheln 3 points4 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think she knows. As you mentioned, she is in a perpetual state of being sad.

Why ?

Because she was the little girl herself, when she was a child. (Or, if you wish, the little girl will grow up into that unhappy flight attendant mother.)

Does anyone else see the Blackhair brother as being the one who, in a few years, quietly and calmly walks up to his father and brains him with a rake? One of those solid old metal affairs that weighs a tonne and could be used by a medieval crusader in the Holy land?

[–]prettycreatures 14 points15 points ago

There's also the underlying implication that the mom knows about the abuse and is giving her the animals as a way to make up for not saving her from it and as a way to buy her silence. By discarding the animals she is rejecting her mother's pathetic attempts to keep her silent and compliant.

[–]nusuth 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's certainly plausible, but I don't think it's strongly implied. She could just as likely be an alcoholic uninvolved mother who thinks the extent of good parenting is buying the affection of her children.

The implication could have been made much stronger with just one additional panel of mom interacting with dad.

[–]BitterHerb 9 points10 points ago

The girl had imagined all of them alive, but after seeing what her father did to her, none of them wanted to deal with it, so they jumped out the window.

[–]staircasewit 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That makes sense. So since they did end up outside her window, we can assume the girl put them there somehow, since they weren't really alive, just imagined alive?

I'm just asking because I feel like if I understand it better I can appreciate better what it says.

[–]CrazySpaniard 5 points6 points ago

is it bad or good that I assumed that she had sex with the bunny until I came here and read the comments?

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I totally misinterpreted this comic. I thought the girl was bitchy and did not like her toys, and her dad came in sold her for being too loud.

She eventually 'raped' her toys and then they killed themselves out of shame by jumping out the window.

The explanations below make far more sense then mine. But goddamn that is a fucked up comic o.0;

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago
