I hated Kimmel for trolling us for the "alternate endings" but I'll give him props that this is damn funny.

This would of been 100% better if it had the iconic "duuuuuunnnnnnnnnnnn!!!!!!" sound when it showed the Lost logo.

I laughed so damn hard. Imagine for a second how awesome this would have been if this was the ending shown on TV. Just the shocked faces of all the eager fans across the country.

Well people who seed torrents have an opportunity for such a prank.

I always thought it would be kinda cool to have the scene from Empire Strikes Back that was shot as originally written...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R66FvPTj2Yw#t=1m39s

...occasionally play as part of the movie on the DVD boxed set. The DVD would use seamless branching, and if (for example) the user hit PLAY after viewing the DVD Menu page for precisely 30 seconds, then the entire movie would play normally, except for that one scene.

They guy would be like.... whoa... I don't remember it being like that. Then he calls his friends, and tries to show them... but the DVD plays the normal cut of the movie.

User assumes he's losing his mind and checks himself into a mental institution. There he meets charming stutterers, alchoholic indians, and a small group of crazies convinced George Lucas is sending them secret messages on his special edition versions of the original trilogy.

That'd be cool.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not just any robots. Dr. Doom robots!

And now you've all got me wondering if the Dark Tower or LOST was more absurd...at least the Lost writers never wrote themselves into the story.

Both stories made the same kind of mistakes. But both stories are also what I consider to be a journey which is a worthwhile watch/read despite ending as if they were written by five year olds. I like to pretend that the last DT book doesn't exist, just as I will go on fondly remembering the great moments of Lost while ignoring pretty much all of season 6, with the exception of the Richard episode.

[–]CheerioMan 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Honestly, I wish I would have stopped after book 4.

[–]chronographer 1 point2 points ago

The very end of the dark tower was pretty cool though, to end with *** *********.

[–]Alofat 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Now that's what I call writing skills. Everyone loves robots! Lost should have had robots!

[–]johnb 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Around the middle of season 2 it seemed like it could turn out to take place in Roland's world. All the out-of-place rundown technology + supernatural stuff really felt the same as while I was reading DT.

[–]Entropy 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]hobbers 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It was hard to resist getting sucked into a series like that with everyone around me talking about it. But I figured it would be a giant scheme like that in the end. However, I'm still incredibly curious, but still can't devote a hundred+ hours to TV. So would it be beneficial to watch a few key episodes like the first and last one, just so I know what people are talking about? Or would it be pointless?

[–]yellowcoward 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I still liked the show, a lot. It was fun like a rollercoaster, no one ever says their favorite part was the slow corner right before the end.

[–]keebler980 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I read on TWoP that sums it up best. We came for the mysteries, but stayed for the characters. It's a very character driven story. Of course it has it's ups and downs, but if you read most comments, most people enjoyed the ending. Not all questions get answered, but such is life.

[–]IsThisSilicone 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm gonna have to go ahead and... disagree with you there.
If great characterization is a bunch of stereotypical cutouts whining and bitching for hundreds of hours then MTV's Real World would be the greatest story since Jesus Christ Marries Vampire Spartacus.
The fact that Lost's "story" turned out to be disappointing to many fans merely drives home that it was an overproduced, blithering mess with neither the characters or framework worthy of the adoration it received.

[–]keebler980 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, I guess Fat Hippie Millionaire, Walking Again Wheelchair Guy, and Time Traveling Scottish Dude are some of my favorite stereotypes. Sure they pissed, bitched, and moaned. They were broken individuals, and that's what broken people do. That's why they were brought to the island. I'll admit that if you came to the show for purely the science part, and wanted purely a scientific ending with all 5000 questions answered, then you will be disappointed. But, for me, it was nice to see Hurley step up, and many of the other characters finally let go.

[–]frickindeal 3 points4 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I re-watched the pilot when it aired last week. Just watching that, the character development was actually quite good, and the whole story just grabbed me again and I remembered why I've watched every episode since.

When the pilot ended, I thought to myself "and thusly were millions of viewers hooked."

[–]kaiise 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

tvtropes stock character list must be out of date lol

edit: also must echo a hell ya to your actual point, in modern life and civilsation, in an age of rampant anti-depressant abuse, over-medication of children, widespread poverty if we are to make any progress, we need ot embrace these very simple concepts,

"let go"

"live in the now "

"there is no past or future"

"there is no now"

we pretty much nailed the whole cain and able thing, this is the nest step.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

You just described every sci-fi show on TV...including Fringe, BSG, and The X-Files.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The first season or two were actually pretty fun because they just involved survival on the island.

My unpopular opinion that the rest of the show was so shitty it never should have been made indicates that you might as well stop there.

[–]dallen 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is how it ended. Vincent eats the body of Jack and enters into the bright light. But since Vincent is evil, he becomes another smoke monster and escapes the island, which turns out to be at Iceland, and the smoke spreads all over Europe. And then the dog shows up at protests in Greece. This incident causes the jet engine on the island to cross over to the Donnie Darko universe crashing through Donnie's bedroom and Frank tells Donnie "In 29 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes and 12 seconds, the world will end" and then

What is it with you Americans and that Heaven nonsense? First you ruin BSG with that Angel shit and now Lost. If Supernatural doesn't end with Dean shooting God in the middle of the face, I'll come over there, buy me a gun and go on a shooting spree in central L.A..

There was nothing about heaven in Lost. If anything, it more closely paralelled Bhuddist beliefs.

You must hate ancient mythology.

<BSG spoilers>

Remember that the BSG remake implied that the Cylon God is a super-intelligent computer. Similarly, heaven might just be another dimension in the multiverse, from which the Cylon God plucked the post-mortem Kara Thrace (edit: and the imitation Baltar and Six) in order to help get the human progress program reinitialized. To me, it still seemed like good sci-fi and not just mysticism. But mysticism can make for good stories, too.

Ok, here's what gets me about LOST and this last season, specifically. The "real" time line all the events that happened this last season were much more streamlined than previous seasons. The drawn-out melodramatic scenes were kept to a minimum and the story moved along at a faster than average pace, at least for LOST.

But in the finale when we learn that the Sideways timeline isn't a timeline at all, but just...Purgatory or Bardo or whatever, it's such a waste of airtime! Half the season, not an episode or two, but half a season was spent in Purgatory, which ultimately amounts to a shaggy dog joke. If you think about it, any story could end with the characters in Purgatory, waiting to be reunited with loved ones. It's lazy and cheap writing, and it kind of surprises me that they were planning this all along.

Look, I'm a meat and potatoes kind of guy. Mysteries are all well and good, but I don't really care for the unsolved kind. Cuse and Lindelof could've spent that half a season answering more questions. Why were Walt and Aaron special, the numbers, the electromagetism, the nature of Smokey and of the Protector. And goddamit, who were the first people to come to the island? How did Allison Janney get there and what motivated her? What is the island, anyway? Give me scifi aliens to explain it, but I want an explanation, dammit. People bitched about the Jacob and Smokey backstory, but my only disappointment with that is they didn't go back far enough. When the fuck did the island first appear/get made?

But no, in the finale we get handwaving and the ultimate red herring. All in the service of a happy ending that'll make your girlfriend cry. It's like one of those movies that are incredibly sad throughout but have a tacked on happy ending.

Us nerds don't really care about catharsis, or redemption, or logic vs. faith, or the Big Questions that you're supposed to grapple with. I wanna see Zeus creating the island from the lightning from his scepter...or whatever. If they can't give me the why, they should at least give me the how. But they didn't want to do more scifi, they decided to leave it as fantasy.

[–]robomoses 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Eh I slightly agree with you, but I remember a post somewhere on Reddit that offered a counterpoint to the exact complaint you have. Would you REALLY have been ok with whatever far-out explanation they could have given?

It would have just amounted to another midichlorians. God forbid.

[–]Anthropoid1 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think the time investment makes me want more explanation. Mysticism and irrationality are fine for a little while, but after six seasons, I'm just regretting spending so much time on that randomness. Or at the very least, the writers needed to follow through with their build-ups. For example, you could tell Walt was going to be an important part of the series' resolution, until he wasn't.

[–]ihaveissues 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, if the alternative is what we got...but yeah, midichlorians. The disappointing thing is that Cuse and Lindelof are good writers, so maybe they would've worked something out. Hell, they could've just trolled a few LOST fan websites and picked up ideas from their dorky fans; there ain't no shortage of fan theories and fiction and whatnot.

Or maybe they're just suited for TV melodrama hackwork. The finale seems to suggest that.

I'm not a professional writer or anything, but how about showing Hurley having a nightmare and flinging himself about like that dog does, then jumps out of bed and hits the wall etc, then he takes a dump and you see it coming out and falling and then clouds part and the enormous turd brings down the plane and we are right back where it all began..

thoughts?

I think of the LOST ending as the biggest Bel-air ever pulled. It's this long interesting story, then at the last second you have to put the entire six years behind you for the sake of some overdone theme that everyone suspected from the beginning but quickly dismissed as the plot got interesting. And the end result is the same: Why did I fall for that again?!

I'm so disappointed and pissed at Lost.

They took a show involving heavy science and turned it into crap the last 10 mins. Even the ending of the show makes no sense in the context of the show.

Utter garbage.

[–]wherestheanykey 3 points4 points ago

I'm glad someone else was watching the same show I was. They had a very good platform for quantum theory and they turned it to mush.

[–]jamessavik 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm just glad that it did end.

Now we are suffering through "Lost-a-like" dramas like FastForward that the networks will probably cancel and will never be finished- like Jericho.

As a writer I know the signs of a writer that has no idea where he's going. The way the plot of Lost wandered aimlessly for whole seasons, they are lucky to have had the ratings that they had. I know many people kept tuning in waiting for it to make any sense whatsoever.

[–]etotheix 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What do you write for? TV? Sounds like a neat gig!

I heard on the internet that the ending was J.J. Abrams' deal (from Christian, Jack, and the casket on), and it had so little to do with the show, that it could've been inserted at any point. All they needed to do was ensure everyone died, and BAM! "satisfying" ending.

That said, I think they ended it the only way they could. IMHO, if they tried to explain the underlying mystery, it would've come out lame. That said, lots of early subplots go left by the wayside (Ethan was clearly some sort of superhuman in season 1, etc).

[–]mutatron 4 points5 points ago

Lots of LOST lovers downvoting the sensemaking comments. I gave up on LOST sometime after the sucky cgi polar bear. I could tell by then it was going to be a pointless roller coaster ride with lots of tricks and little substance. The various "explanations" only makes it worse by proving how vacuous it was.
