Is there any way to post this in a larger size? It would make a great desktop wallpaper.

It came to me as a 4x6. I can scan it I guess and repost it to imgur. Let me see what I can do.

Still working on it ... My comp isn't connected to my router for some reason. I've got to fix that first. Stand fast.

Lousy reality and its shitty resolution. They need to bump that up a few notches.

It was a joke. He wanted a bigger image so I made it bigger. Doesn't mean I got a higher quality image.

Yes my comment was also a joke.

Dammit! And it's so obvious now that I re-read it. I need more sleep.

The view is from Palm Valley Bridge. Ponte Vedra, FL. (I wish I could say I took this picture, but it came to me from a friend)

Ha! I also got that from a friend - day before yesterday - I'm in JAX, FL so we must have some Kevin Bacon mojo working here.

Here's the text of the e-mail I got:

One of the guys the girl that sent this to me works with is an amateur
photographer (his name is James Vernacotola). He got up very early this
morning and took this picture of the last nighttime space shuttle launch and
was kind enough to share with his co-workers and whomever else would
appreciate the beauty of the space launch.

He took the picture using a tri-pod and the elapsed time for the picture
was several minutes in order to get the full fire-trail (this is why the stars are
little lines instead of dots). I thought it was pretty cool and wanted to
share it with you.

    Monday, February 8, 2010 @ 4:14 am
Top of the Intracoastal Waterway Bridge in Ponte Vedra, FL
    115 Miles from the launch
    34 Degrees outside (!)

I was out at 4:14 to watch it and it WAS cold! But not as cold as it was the night/morning before down at KSC for the scrubbed launch - it was everybit as cold but WINDY as hell! BBBBBRRRRRRR :)

[–]colloquy[S] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I KNOW!!! What's with this weather? (I'm in northern St. Johns BTW ... about 6 miles from the bridge)

[–]TheLoneHoot 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm near the Avenues Mall area. I guess we DO have some 6 degrees of James Vernacotola or something.

Yeah, ridiculously cold for us. killed a bunch of my outdoor plants. >:-(

Trace this email back to the source and force the photographer to give us a high-res file. The "high-res" scan from the OP sucks (no offense, OP. your effort is appreciated). You can do it, TheLoneHoot. We believe in you.

Funny, when I got in to work 25 min ago, a co-worker says, "Hey man I e-mailed you a awesome time lapse shot of the shuttle launch.", and I replied, "Was it taken from the ICW bridge in Ponte Vedra?"

It was! So he and I compared names in the e-mail addresses but didn't find a common denominator. I'll see if I can trace it back through my friend that sent it to me and see if...
"One of the guys the girl that sent this to me works with is an amateur
photographer (his name is James Vernacotola)."
...means I can get a high res version.

Looks like I am 4 degrees of James Vernacotola.

Did he use a digital? Ask him to email/post on Imgur. The quality will be much better than a scan.

Good to know.

I'll find the picture again with Google, somehow track down the guy who took the photo, and let him know his camera sucks.

This is one of the few good reasons to live in Florida.

Actually you might be surprised. For years I swore I'd never want to live here. I always pictured it as a bunch of old people and tourists.

Nothing like that in most places.

I moved here 20 years ago. (I'm 46 now, so I guess I'm one of those old people now, but I wasn't then.) I was totally shocked when I "discovered" the real Florida. The state has some amazing wildlife, cities based on things other than tourism, areas that freeze every winter (even get snow now and then), and even places that aren't flat. Now, yes, there are some tourist-based areas like Orlando and some of the better known cities, but there are also cities like Jacksonville, Tallahassee, Gainesville, etc., that get very little tourism.

If you do want to "discover" Florida, but don't want to be caught up in throngs of people spending lots of money on cartoon mouse trinkets, I'd recommend researching some of the TONS of non-mainstream things here. The Intracoastal Waterway, where this photo was taken, is actually a nice way to do it, here in the northeastern part of the state... if you follow along (US1, or A1A tend to run parallel, but if you can take a boat it's even better) you can see some really interesting local "flavors". St. Augustine has its touristy areas, but it's worth a visit - 500 years old is "ancient" here in the US and their beach is really nice. The Everglades, waaaaaay south, are a very diverse habitat (including the only place in the world where both alligators and crocodiles coexist) and you stand a good chance of being able to fill an SD card with photos of wildlife.

The "left coast" has some interesting stuff too, but I really don't get over there so I can't speak about it much - but that's where the state is probably least known to most people, therefore probably has some of the most to be "discovered". I know that Sanibel Island, Venice, and some of the southern areas are nice, but there's also the classic Florida fishing villages of Cedar Key and others towns further up the west coast.

I should work for the department of tourism - except I'd steer people clear of Orlando and Miami.

Ha! I thought you were one of the many college students that are abundant here. :-) I'm an "oldie" too. (44) -P.S. I had another friend send me the pic that he got but it was not much better. 6 kb instead of 3.

STS 131 and STS 132 are the last shuttles to blast off. Make sure to catch the launches on nasa tv!

[–]DiamondBack 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There are four more shuttle missions, the last two are STS-134 in July and STS-133 in September (source: NASA).

TV isn't the only way to catch a launch, I ordered tickets to watch STS-131 from the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex yesterday morning, I was hoping for Causeway tickets but they sellout pretty fast. Just hope they can get it launched on time, my personal "launch window" only lasts for two days.
