This wasn't just sent to Jim Cameron. Lucas bought a full-page ad in Variety. That's why this looks like a scan from a magazine.

This is actually part of a decades-long tradition...

When the original Star Wars beat the box office record held by Jaws, Speilberg took out a full page ad in Variety that showed R2D2 reeling in the eponymous shark (thanks to toefer for posting this one, too).

Later, after ET retook the record, Lucas ran an ad with R2D2 putting a crown on ET's head.

Then in 1997 when the Star Wars Special Edition regained top-grossing spot, Spielberg's congratulatory ad showed a long line of movie characters with R2D2 zipping past to the front of the line.

This ad of ET returning the crown to R2D2 fits in there somehow as well. I hadn't heard of this one before toefer dug it up.

I guess it's time for Jim Cameron to run an ad congratulating himself for beating his own record.

If anyone can find scans of the other ads, I would be most grateful.

I heard an interview on NPR with George Lucas. He seems like a pretty genuine, gracious guy. Apparently he and Spielberg were part of the same collective of young filmmakers looking for a way to break into Hollywood.

Evidently when they were shopping around early versions of Close Encounters and Star Wars, each thought that the other had a much better film idea. As a fail safe, they agreed to split the profit of their first film with the other (so that if one was a hit and one bombed, they would both benefit).

"Spielberg won that bet" said Lucas "I ended up having the better film."

[–]danteferno 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

and did they share the profits?

[–]Beer_Is_So_Awesome 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He wasn't 100% clear in the interview, but made it sound as if they did. He also made some remarks about how they all grew up in the 60's, and had kind of a communal attitude toward their success (given that they spent so much time working together and helping one another on projects). The group of film school friends he refers to also included DePalma and Coppola.

Does this mean that Cameron will now have to write an ad for himself? Is there a precedent for this situation?

[–][deleted] 129 points130 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I doubt it. It would rad to see an ad where the Titanic is crashing into one of the floating Pandora mountains while Na'vi swarm about shooting poison arrows through Kate and Leo. The caption reads I'M STILL KING OF THE WORLD. SUCK IT GEORGE AND STEVE.

Chances are Cameron will run an ad when he loses the top spot. Someone will have to work pretty damn hard to accomplish that in his lifetime. Star Wars might actually get another chance after it's re-released in 3D. Perhaps we can look forward to an ad of Jakesully re-crowning R2.

I don't think so. While Avatar is going to obliterate the top spot handily, I don't think it will be nearly as gargantuan of a cushion as Titanic built for itself. If he takes another 10 yr break after Avatar, someone else will take it easily.

Keep in mind normal theatre ticket prices during the Titanic era were substantially lower, 3d theatre ticket prices are substantially higher, and China/Russia weren't prosperous enough to contribute to the success of Titanic. In truth, even if Avatar completely stomps Titanic in the end....Cameron has set a precedent and contributed to building up a 3d theatre infrastructure that will allow another big-budget 3d masterpeice to easily duplicate its success.

Star Wars might actually get another chance after it's re-released in 3D.

Again, no... To be half as beautiful as Avatar, it would have had to have been filmed with cameras that had not been invented yet when Star Wars was released. Beyond that, Lucas has basically squandered the good faith that many if not most of his fans had in him. Episode 3 really wasn't quite enough for complete redemption. I don't think it would have the momentum even if it was released in perfect Avatar-style 3d.

Those are good points, but before that happens peak oil will cripple the world economy causing our society to descend into apocalyptic chaos in which roving murderous gangs rule over a dwindling populace that increasingly turns to ritual suicide to escape the flaming hellscape that will replace our once prosperous and peaceful civilization.

This will have a negative effect on box office receipts going forward.

The live action might look like cardboard cut-outs propped up in a 3D space...

They already have sophisticated algorithms that can detect the geometry of the actors, sets and props then adjust the camera perspective accordingly. The tech is actually pretty cool. It works so well that a lot of 3D movies will be shot in 2D then converted to 3D in post production.

[–]IOIOOIIOIO 2 points3 points ago

How do they recover fine detail?

Everything I've seen like that looks like DOOM3D with better graphics, more or less.

[–]dakboy 2 points3 points ago

but to be honest the acting would make it look like that anyway.

No matter how good the actors are, if they're given crappy material to work with and a lousy director, the result isn't going to be good.

As you are aware, Pandora isn't an actual location. Wonderful things can be done with matte painting and manipulation of existing 2-dimensional data just as the world in Avatar was made with CG. To be honest, the live action parts gave me a headache due to DoF issues.

To be half as beautiful as Avatar, it would have had to have been filmed with cameras that had not been invented yet when Star Wars was released.

I don't think Star Wars 3D will be more beautiful than Avatar, but the technology exists to convert 35mm to digital 3D very convincingly. The fact that the 3D version builds on the previous re-re-re-releases gives it an edge, along with the fact that it's STAR WARS.

Beyond that, Lucas has basically squandered the good faith that many if not most of his fans had in him.

Bah, you're just spending too much time on the intertubes. People actually liked the prequels. And all those kids who grew up with Star Wars now have children and grandchildren who they would love to share the experience with. I predict Star Wars 3D will do pretty well, if we can avoid the hellscape scenario by then.

It's just a silly space movie, people. If you're that emotionally invested in it, you need to gain a little perspective.

Besides, maybe Han will shoot first this time around.

Do you remember how in Episode III, for a brief moment during Padme's funeral, Lucas does a huge close-up on Jar-Jar's mourning face for what felt like eternity?

Jar Jar doesn't have a single line in EPIII, does he? I think Georgie-boy learned his lesson and did the right thing by fans. He couldn't erase Jar Jar from the universe, but he at least silenced him.

"Admiral Ackbar returned a broken man. His amphibian frame wouldn't allow him to die, the antifreeze in his blood coursing through him as he swam interminable miles to the nearest landmass.

"He'd deluded himself for several hours that his terrestrial friends would be able to weather the vagaries of hypothermia. He treaded water for hours, consoling the abject and frightened victims of the shipwreck. He sang them songs and held their hands, he bellowed words of encouragement, but all for naught. Jabba's naturally buoyant frame kept him alive the longest, but eventually he too succumbed to the cold waters. Ackbar cursed the fates who would let his friends die, to let this villainous scum be his last companion.

After the Admiral had acted as steward to all the victims of the wreck and he'd given them what honors he could, he began to swim.

Memories of Chewie joyfully cannonballing into the water filled him with a profound sadness. The Ewoks mewling, pleading "yub yub," as they one by one died. Watching their adorable little paws trying to keep their brethren afloat. Boba Fett's stoic act of heroism, sharing his X-wing with Han and Leia and only twice mentioning the bounty on his head. In a disaster where Ackbar could have seen the worst in everyone, he only saw their best. Even Jabba had allowed Salacious Crumb to float on his massive belly, until a piece of debris struck the Hutt and he rolled over, sending Crumb into the depths.

Ackbar tortured himself with every agile movement through the waves til at least he made landfall. He collapsed and was found a day later. It was weeks before he recounted his story; he only did so once, trusting the holorecorder would be accessed by all concerned parties. He knew posterity demanded that of him, but subsequent to that, he could not be convinced to repeat his tale. His sad, sad tale.

Admiral Ackbar never again commanded a Mon Calamari cruiser. Wracked with guilt, he moved into the town's lighthouse, and never ventured forth except on dark, foggy nights."

Congratulations, Jim. You bastard.

'A New Hope' is actually IV. SHIT! Wouldn't it be cool if George Lucas made a trilogy of Star Wars films about Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vadar, I wander how he became evil? Why else would he start at IV. It's just my theory. The mind boggles.

I suppose Lucas can look at this list and feel better: http://boxofficemojo.com/alltime/adjusted.htm

[–]centrus 2 points3 points ago

A big chunk of the revenue Avatar has earned is from 3d and IMAX sales. The adjusted gross takes tickets sold and multiplies it with the average domestic ticket price (which, according to boxofficemojo is $7.35).

I think there are just way too many movies released nowadays for anyone to take down Gone With the Wind. It nearly grossed 200 million dollars in a time when a movie ticket was like a nickel or a dime.

[–]nater99 26 points27 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It was pretty much the only movie playing too...

[–]BenOfTomorrow 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Keep in mind a lot of the older films were repeatedly re-released over time, which is where a lot of that money comes from. Gone with the Wind has had 8 wide releases from 1939 to 1998.

[–]mrwig 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, I think it's hard for people my age to realize that re-releases were commonplace since we're so conditioned to sequels and reboots.

I read recently that Lucas is considering converting Star Wars to 3D, so I'm sure those movies will be re-released eventually and inch a little closer to the crown.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's probably that plus the rise of home video, as well as better TVs/sound systems. "I'll wait for it to come out on video/be shown on TV" wasn't really an option in the 30s.

The fact that especially if you have a nice TV/sound system in your house you don't usually miss much by waiting 6 months for the DVD/Blu-ray means that we probably won't ever see anything but movies with big budgets and lots of special effects and action getting that level of ticket sales, because those are the only sorts of movies where the IMAX screens and 50-channel surround systems and 3D glasses add something significant to the experience.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Especially when you realize our population is increasing, so even after adjusting for inflation, the new movies still have an advantage over the old ones.

[–]Tigerbot 4 points5 points ago

Well to be fair, Avatar will be in the top 20 by the time all is said and done.

[–]Stormwatch36 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Looking through those top 20 and how great they all are, Avatar will be the worst one there except for maybe Episode I.

[–]vaselineviking 4 points5 points ago

I know we're going to get downvoted to hell but thank you for making me feel like I'm not the only person that thought Avatar was sub-par.

[–]MaximumAbsorbency 13 points14 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I thought it was a sub-par story.

A lot of these top movies bring something significant to the table that changed moviemaking forever, and I think Avatar's was the 3D, CGI, and filming techniques.

The technology and methodology that was straight-up developed to make this movie will be around forever now. I don't think the 3D and the filming techniques will be as big as "holy crap, they can put sound in those moving pictures now!" but I think it will be pretty significant in the future.

[–]ours 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Avatar may not have brought techniques as game changing as sound was but it sure brought changes bigger than colour.

These guys where filming CGI with crazy advanced full body motion-capture that includes the face and eyes as well as blue-screen filming. All in HD 3D while simultaneously filming 2D. All that with the crew being able to see real-time CGI while they film. And that's with a camera you can carry around on a steady-cam or hand-held.

Also, the editing was done right after mo-cap, before the final rendering which is unseen.

Greatest story ever told? Certainly not, revolutionary behind the scenes? Hell yes and the result is amazing.

[–]rawker 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I doubt the technology will we around for much longer, it was horribly expensive, and waste of time and money. It would have been cheaper, and probably faster to have animators animate the movie. Then we might not have been stuck with the bad acting.

[–]locke-peter 2 points3 points ago

The characters are flat; the acting is poor; the script always has issues with plot holes that are never resolved, and despite having the largest budget of all time; it seems like it could be redone with lazers, jetpacks, and flying cars with hotter people all in CGI for cheaper.

This is particularly interesting given the recent story in Wired that tells of how jealous Cameron was that Lucas had beat him to making Star Wars, and how Avatar was all about getting even.

It must have been a very good day for Cameron.

[–]rogerssucks 8 points9 points ago

Titanic was an astoundingly popular film, but Star Wars is larger in terms of the entire franchise, and how much it impacted American/global culture. I don't see people going to conventions and dressing up as Jack or Rose. It's Luke Skywalker and Leia. Star Wars has been around for 33 years. It's still going strong.

[–][deleted] 94 points95 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You're right. It will be third place to Avatar.

[–]turtlestack 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not in my mind :)

I liked Titanic and really liked Avatar, but back in '77 Star Wars was the first movie I ever saw and because of that awe-inspiring experience I absolutely love movies.

Hopefully, though, there are some kids for whom Avatar was their first movie experience and they will fall in love with the art as well.

[–]brttf3 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

keep in mind we aren't talking 'good or better' we are talking box office. Titanic was not a great film (though technologically amazing) but it struck a chord with people and sold a lot of tickets. you could say the same thing about Star Wars, though I think it is actually a better film than titanic.

It isn't second place in any reasonable person's mind. The box office numbers are not adjusted for inflation. By any reasonable metric, (tickets sold or inflation adjusted gross, for example) Star Wars ranks higher than Titanic.

Iain McCaig. He was one of the top concept artists on the prequels, and a pretty cool guy. He designed Darth Maul, among other things.

He came and gave a talk at our college, where he actually showed this picture. He pointed out one of the creatures in the image (I don't remember which one) which wasn't part of the original Star Wars canon; he just made it up on the spot. Well, turns out you can't just do that: the Star Wars universe is tightly controlled and every race/creature has to have a name and a story to place them in the series. He got a visit from the archive people after it was published, and they had to add whatever he had come up with into the official canon.
