best quote i've read all day. i didn't need a reason to love richard pryor more, but now i got one.
[–]IConrad 3 points4 points5 points 2 years ago
Try this: part of his will indicated that his funds were to be set to a charity for homeless animals.
His widow pulled Chris Rock off of portraying him due to CR's indicating that it was "alright" for black people to not like pit bulls on account of "their mutual history".
[–]mobileF 5 points6 points7 points 2 years ago*
I'm really confused by your comment. First , did you really abbreviate Chris Rock?
also, are you saying that chris rock was supposed to play Richard Pryor in a movie, but his widow took the part away from him because chris rock said that it's okay for blacks to dislike pitbulls?
Not trying to be dickish, I'm just confused.
[–]sanity 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
Agreed, I didn't understand his second sentence either.
[–]IConrad -9 points-8 points-7 points 2 years ago
First , did you really abbreviate Chris Rock?
Yes, I did. I was feeling lazy while typing. If that is going to confuse you, then there's really not much hope for you on anything else.
Specifically it was CR's statements about Michael Vick's treatment of his pit bulls being "alright", on that account. Yes. How the devil is this confusing to you?
[–]seanomenon 7 points8 points9 points 2 years ago
It was confusing to me, too. I know the sentence made a lot of sense in your mind, but that doesn't mean it was written clearly. MobileF made it pretty clear he was just asking for clarification, it seems odd that you'd be so defensive and insulting in your reply.
[–]IConrad -7 points-6 points-5 points 2 years ago
It might have something to do with the fact that there was nothing about the contextual or pronoun usage which might lead to confusion.
[–]LouMing 3 points4 points5 points 2 years ago
Here's another reason to love Pryor: he set aside money in his will for a charity that helps homeless animals.
His family felt so strongly about the cause that Pryor's widow prevented Chris Rock from portraying him on film due to Rock's insensitive statement supporting Michael Vicks treatment of Pitbulls.
ftfy
[–]IConrad -2 points-1 points0 points 2 years ago
Except that's not accurate. His widow did what she did in Pryor's memory, without corroborating it against the will of his family in general, but specifically because it is what she feels Pryor would have wanted.
As to the rest -- the additional information about Vick wasn't necessary to understand it, and the reference of "CR" as Chris Rock once CR was identified in the sentence made the pronoun usage explicitly clear. Who else would those initials represent in that sentence? (And let's not forget; use of initials as an abbreviation is common parlance in the English language -- and has been for centuries)
The "potential for confusion" is explicitly equivalent in your sentence as it is in mine -- in fact, it's actually greater in yours as it introduces the idea that Pryor's family was in-line with his beliefs, when that isn't at all clear; they might be, or they might not be... but it is certain that RP himself was.
I'm sorry, but that's not a "fix" in any valid sense.

[–]libbrichus 5 points6 points7 points 2 years ago
He was amongst the greatest and bravest comics that ever lived, right up there with Bill Hicks, George Carlin and Lenny Bruce. You can download the full Dvdrip of what is perhaps his best live concert here: http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/5158292/Richard_Pryor.Live_in_Concert.DVDRip.XviD-Atilla82

Any source or video for this? Not that I don't believe it, but I'd like to see the whole bit.

Slacktivist has an interesting take on vampires and crucifixes (he's a rather sensible evangelical).

Uh huh
[–]za72 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
This is why "evil" wins, because "good is dumb" - Spaceballs ftw.

i see your sensible evangelical and raise you an honest politician.
[–]r00kie 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago

Hah, I hadn't heard that. Can I also repel vampires with star signs and homeopathic garlic?
[–]tophat_jones 6 points7 points8 points 2 years ago
I'm sad he was one of my 2 favorite comedians and I had no idea he was dead.
WTF... tophat_jones. Get your shit together, man.
[–]some_cool_guy 15 points16 points17 points 2 years ago
It's easy to be confused when his documentary is called, "I Ain't Dead Yet, Motherfucker."
[–]blackjewobamafan 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago
What's the movie where he plays a blind guy? I only watched a few minutes of it in some middle east hotel and had to leave because of a meeting. It looked hilarious.

Look - you people are missing the obvious explanation. Take a look at the facts:
Some guy in the past has supernatural powers, including what are clearly feats of mind control, and raising people from the dead. Both powers traditionally attributed to vampires. Notably, those he raised were careful to avoid sunlight on any exposed skin ("bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin")
He later sits down with a bunch of friends for supper and talks to them about drinking blood. Points out that if they do this, they will live forever.
He then gets imprisoned by the authorities and killed, but pretty much as soon as the corpse gets moved from the sunlight into a nice dark cave, rises from the grave. (Clearly the Romans had got the details of vampire slaying confused - you're supposed to nail the wooden stake through the vampire, not nail the vampire to the wooden stake)
Years later, we get stories of a vampire with similar powers who recoils in fear from a cross.
Well duh! It was the same guy! You'd have serious psychological issues about them too if you'd been nailed to one for 3 days!

Richard Pryor running down the street!
[–]naterator 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
A spectacular quote. His death was a great loss not only to the comedic world, but the universe in general.
[–]quipitrealgood 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
I must have that as a poster.
Nice. Richard Pryor was well before his time.
So was Richard Pryor an atheist or simply non-religious?
[–]Netcob 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
what's the difference?
[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 2 years ago*
An atheist lacks a God belief and a non-religious person lacks a religious belief. You can be non-religious and still believe in God, like many deists who don't subscribe to any religious dogma but believe in an impersonal deity. Atheists are usually non-religious, but you can be religious and still be an atheist, like many Buddhists who don't believe in God but believe in reincarnation and other supernatural concepts.
[–]migmir 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
i think lacenaire is asking if Pryor explicitely believed there was no god, or just didn't care.
[–]kublakhan1816 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
I rewatched "Hear No Evil, See No Evil" and "Toys" this weekend. It made me really sad. I miss Richard Pryor so much and it saddens me that the younger generation has idea who he is.

no need for racism
[–]sodoh 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
He isn't being racist, it is the name of one of his albums. RP was always taking the piss out of racism.
I loved his Job Application sketch. http://www.livevideo.com/video/534015CE8FD3470FBEDD26BE16FC7496/job-interview.aspx
I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or not but that is the title of one of Mr Pryor's albums. And it is outstanding.
