Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Don't forget the huge dorky pilot watch! That's how you can identify a true pilot, he/she has a watch that's big enough to be used as a bludgeon.

A plane is a very dorky thing to own. I've lost way more cool points than I've gained by having it because it's turned me into a huge plane nerd.

But it's worth it. :)

deadapostle is right, I was referring to the watch, not the plane. If anything, I've had people tell me left & right how awesome they think must be to fly-assuming they didn't express outright fear of small planes and general aviation, haha. I would only assume owning a plane would be even cooler :)

I hired a Cessna from Oakland Flyers and flew over the bridge last year. It was an amaazing experience - dancing in the sky over the Alkatraz and those two massive bridges. Lovely stuff.

[–]haganaga 30 points31 points ago

I was wondering, since you are a pilot and all, how do you know what airspace is okay to fly through and which is not? I would assume that flying over the Golden Gate Bridge would be a no no, but obviously its not.

[–]Chairboy[S] 50 points51 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have charts. When I took this picture, I was "in the system", talking to controllers that run the airspace around San Francisco. The busiest airports are surrounded by 'Class B airspace', a very tightly controlled area that keeps everyone separated and safe. The maps we carry are very clear and show where it is.

The Golden Gate Bridge isn't treated as a special 'airspace' thing because there are few airplanes flying through it, but there are rules about how close to structures and people on the ground you can fly, and I was following those regs.

And if you want to see what sectional charts look like, they're online at skyvector

[–]zakool21 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Seconded. If you fly under 3,000 feet within a couple miles of the GG Bridge, you're not actually in anybody's airspace and don't need to be talking to ATC. I talk to NorCal Approach whenever I'm in that area, because there are a lot of twin-engine tour aircraft that fly a hell of a lot faster than I can in a 172 and sneak up behind you. Also, stationary or slow helicopters can be tough to spot. It's always nice to have that extra insurance in the form of radar service, even if they're not always 100% on top of things.

Just as an example for here is what the SF sectional chart looks like (we don't call them maps): http://skyvector.com/?ll=37.81424761328722,-122.39841235256621&chart=16&zoom=1

1975 Piper Cherokee Warrior! It's my first plane, and I love it. Plane ownership is fantastic, but like a boat, the only way it can be affordable with middle-class income is to do as much of the maintenance myself.

[–]duragizer444 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I am all up for doing work on all of my own toys, but I don't know if i could muster up enough courage to repair a plane and trust flying it again. AAA isn't much help if you break down hundreds of feet in the air.

[–]Chairboy[S] 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have a great mechanic who checks out my work whenever I do anything more complicated than changing the oil, it's both good common-sense and ze law. :)

Planes are very, very easy to work on. Nowhere near as complicated as an average car, as funny as that may sound. Complexity = weight, and most airplanes flying were designed decades ago. The modern Piper Warrior is structurally identical to my 35 year old plane, for example.

[–]duragizer444 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The simplicity of them makes sense. I would trust myself working on the engine, but pretty much anything else I would want someone looking over my shoulder the whole time making sure everything is installed properly.

I'd like to learn flying. Howmuch does it cost in America? Here in Europe, it cost a fortune.

[–]Chairboy[S] 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

About $5K USD is a reasonable guestimate, but it depends on where you learn, how often you take lessons (the more often you fly, the less it costs because you don't spend as much time re-learning things), and what kind of plane you learn in.

Many people come to the US to learn, it's often much cheaper to come over and rent an apartment and get training than it is to do it in their home country. Airline pilots are one of our big exports for this reason, for example. I encounter some fascinating accents on the radio when I fly, it's very cool.

[–]zakool21 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I did mine for $5300 in Davis, which has some of, if not the cheapest Avgas in Northern California. Then again, I got my private in 42 hours and the national average is 60-80. So something more like $7500-$9000 is a more reasonable expectation.

[–]Artmageddon 3 points4 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's several thousand USD, depending on the flight school you go to and the hourly rates for instructors and plane rentals. The minimum required is 40 hours for a private pilot, but most people tend to earn their licenses after 50-60 hours. You can go for a sport* pilot license if you like, which is a bit limited(with respect to distance from starting airport) though easier to earn.

*Chairboy kindly corrected me below, this should be recreational, not sport pilot. Getting a sport pilot license is awesome, and I would love to do aerobatics if I could!

[–]Chairboy[S] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Light Sport doesn't carry a distance limitation from the airport, that sounds like the failed 'Recreational' certificate that it replaced.

Ahhh right, sorry! Will amend my previous post...

[–]SquareRoot 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Out of curiosity - how much did that plane cost? Ballpark.

[–]Chairboy[S] 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly $34,000, and I bought it in May of 2007. The price of planes has dropped since because of the economic downturn, the equivalent price might be high 20s instead.

Of course, you can buy a good two-seater like the Cessna 152 for around/less than $20k too.

Planes are awesome. I love mine.

[–]snorch 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Would you be willing or interested in doing an IAMA post? I dream of owning my own plane, but I'm still young and broke. I'm curious what plane ownership entails for an average dude with no knowledge of aviation.

So true. As a californian, I am at a loss for an appropriate second person plural. I'm Texan born and have lived in California for ten years or so.
Y'all is bred into me.

...
...on second thought, forget I said that.

When I lived in Los Angeles, there were two things that made me stick out as a transport to the locals. 1) Saying "y'all." 2) I was polite.

[–]CaseLogic 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I only like it when it's correctly used as y'all, and not ya'll like most people tend to use.

[–]fr4vr 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Or the redundant "all y'all".

[–]reverendfrag4 1 point2 points ago

Yes. This.

Foreigner here: I think "y'all" sounds stupid.

[–]sagenumen 47 points48 points ago

Don't worry; it sounds stupid to natives, as well.

[–]mrblue182 3 points4 points ago

Yous sounds even worse.

[–]lollapaulooza 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why the hate on Southerners? but as to the "ya'll" I know that in German at least, and probably other languages, saying something like "ya'll" becomes very useful.

[–]reverendfrag4 18 points19 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It is spelled "y'all," not "ya'll."

"Y'all" is a contraction of the words "you" and "all." In contractions, the apostrophe is placed where the letters have been removed. In this case, the "ou" in "you" has been removed, leaving us "y'all."

[–]Pinot911 7 points8 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's far better than yous. Yous guys.

Plus, you can say ya'll without the southern accent 'yawl'. Just say yuuahl.

Perhaps if English had a plural form of you this wouldn't be a problem. Such as in German: euch or ihr.

Latin student here: I think it sounds useful.

[–]bigattack 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Most languages have a plural of "you" (e.g., vous). English did not until we invented one: y'all.

Most ignorant foreigners thinks words of other languages sound stupid. Don't worry.

[–]eaturbrainz 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually in old English "you" was the plural form.

Thanks! It was an awesome trip, too, it was my wife and I and we flew down the coast from Eugene,OR to Los Angeles, then over to Las Vegas, and finally back via a circuitous mountain route that involved landing at the lowest airport in the country (211 feet BELOW sea level), Lake Tahoe, etc.

I was flying into Heathrow a few weeks back... I just happened to glance out the window and suddenly the clouds had vanished and had been replaced by the most incredible view I've ever seen - London. I've never actually been to London previously and I was only due to be in West London (Brentford) for a few hours. But the view - which lasted a split second - seemed to have every significant landmark in it - the London Eye, Parliament Buildings, River Thames, Canary Wharf, Tower Bridge... it was the combination of the particular angle and altitude that just made it so amazing.

By the way, great photo I have some similar photos taken from the aeroplane that are similarly amazing... just not as amazing as yours though. I was quite taken aback!

This was after about an hour and a half, I think. I had taken off from Redding, CA and was going to land at Half Moon Bay for lunch, but then the fog happened. We continued on to Hollister,CA instead for fuel, and the airport smelled just amazing. That's not a sentence I ever thought I'd write, but it's surrounded by garlic fields or something, and it smelled like an unbelievably fantastic restaurant.

But mine is just clouds, and yours actually looks good.
