Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

if you like jello - fuck the new dead kennedys - check out the jelvins (jello biafra and the melvins)

And look at all the whores,

Reunions for wrong reasons,

Playing only songs from the good old days,

About how bad the good old days were,

So why not us?

We don't even like this stuff no more,

But look at all that retro-racket cash,

Those dumb punk kids will buy anything!

Sorry if I didn't make my point clear, I thought he was saying that he liked the new singer. Even though its been years, I still think of replacement lead singers as the 'new singers'. I still call Brian Johnson AC/DC's 'new singer' and to be honest I never liked them since Bon Scott died (probably coincided with my changing music taste). Bon Scott's voice was unique whereas Johnson seems to me like a Karaoke version of Bon Scott.

And I also remember having a hard time accepting Bernard Sumner as Ian Curtis's replacement in Joy Divison/New Order. Even though they technically were a new band, it always appeared to me that Sumner was a Curtis wannabe. Ian Curtis was the Curt Cobain of my youth.

Thanks I will have a listen, but my music taste has change quite a bit, and it's been nearly 20 years since I listened to any sort of punk.

EDIT-Getting back to the DK's, back in 83 when they toured Australia, they were pretty much an underground act, you only ever heard them on RRR and no one that I knew had even seen a photo of what they looked like as they didn't have any pic's of themselves on their albums. Then I saw them being interviewed on a Saturday morning music show (have a VCR recording of that somewhere, should dig it up and put it on youtube) and I saw for the first time what they looked like. Anyway at their first gig, I am watching the support act and I see this little guy in the crowd a few feet away from me in flannel shirt and I'm thinking, that guy really looks like Jello, but nah, he is too short and he is dressed pretty plain, not what I expected of a punk rock god. Anyway after the band finished I was in the foyer and I see him again in brighter light and I said to my friend 'I really think thats Jello Biafra', and friend said 'well go and ask him'. At the same time some people heard me say that and they were kinda looking to see who I was going to approach because they obviously didn't know what he looked like either. I went up to him and totally not expecting to be him and asked 'Excuse me, are you Jello Biafra', and he replied in that unmistakable voice 'Like who wants to know?' and with that I was struck speechless with that "I am not worthy, I am not worthy' kind of shock and reverance and within seconds the people that had watched me approach him just suddenly crowded me out and started talking to him.

Pretty funny when I think back.

But the thing is Jello Biafra did get replaced. Twice! I had no idea till I got pointed to their wiki page yesterday. Apparently the acrimony is still pretty raw. And basically East Bay Ray and Klaus Flouride have been playing as Dead Kennedys with both a replacement singer and drummer.

You think that was ballsy?

Check this one out:

"On March 25, 1980, the DKs were invited to perform at the Bay Area Music Awards in front of music industry bigwigs to give the event some "New Wave credibility", in the words of the organizers. The day of the show was spent practicing the song they were asked to play, the underground hit, "California Über Alles". In typically subversive, perverse style, the band became the talking point of the ceremony when after about 15 seconds into the song, Biafra said, "Hold it! We've gotta prove that we're adults now. We're not a punk rock band, we're a new wave band."

The band, who all wore white shirts with a big, black S painted on the front, pulled black ties from around the backs of their necks to form a dollar sign, then started playing a new song "Pull My Strings", a barbed, satirical attack on the ethics of the mainstream music industry, which contained the lyrics, "Is my cock big enough, is my brain small enough, for you to make me a star?".

Extacted from their wikipedia entry.

When I was a kid (pre-CDs and pre-computers) we taped music off the radio. There has always been one form of piracy or another. We also BOUGHT music.

[–]wickedcold 76 points77 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Heh, I remember that. That's how my entire library was built. Every song had an intro by a DJ and had the long, instrumental intro cut off. It isn't like they lost any money from record sales, I was a poor kid.

::Edit::

And if it wasn't the DJ, it was a member of the band whoring the radio station's call letters for them during the intro. Ex (from an actual song I taped when I was 12 - I only remember it because I planed "You Could Be Mine about 10000 times before I wore out the tape):

This is Slash from Guns 'n Roses and you're listening to the Rock of Boston, WBCN Boston!!

:: cue guitars ::

And my blank tapes were not "blank tapes". They were usually tapes I'd found scattered around from artists I had no interest in. I would put the scotch tape over the little notches to tape over them (remember that shit? man I feel old). If my memory serves me right the above G 'n R song was taped over a Shelia E tape.

[–][deleted] 72 points73 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Howard Stern once did a bit where he had a DJ on and they battled on being able to talk over the intro to a song and stop talking right before the lyrics started. Howard was quite pleased that he could wind up his intro just as the lyrics began.

Nothing has ever infuriated me more about radio (until Clear Channel) - I always figured DJs talked over intros because they had to, but I'd figured it was a grudging "gotta do what you gotta do." To hear Stern gush over how perfectly he could talk over a song pissed me off.

In case there happens to be a DJ reading this - I listen to the radio to hear music, not your fucking mouth. If you want to talk, join a morning zoo.

[–]lunchboxg4 27 points28 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's called "Hitting the Post" and it's a fairly difficult thing to do when broadcasting, only because you have about a zillion other things going on at the same time. Nowadays it's easier with digital libraries since you actually have a countdown on screen, but when Stern was DJing and music came on carts, it was pretty hard. Not that it's good, but that's how it goes.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nevertheless, I don't admire him for his ability to accurately and precisely ruin a song.

That's one of the reasons why I love WZLX (Boston classic rock). They usually play the complete, entire, songs, without talking over any part. And if the artists meant for several songs on an album to be heard together (e.g. Pink Floyd), that's usually how they play them.

[–]wickedcold 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My mom wouldn't let me have the Thriller album when it came out. I remember sitting there with my head against the radio, finger on the 'record' button, so she couldn't hear which songs were on, waiting sometimes hours for the stupid DJ to play the latest song Michael Jackson had released.

In a very religious household, that was the only way I could gather tapes full of contraband.

When I was a kid, back in 16'th century, when some person told interesting story, or sang a new song in tavern and was bought beer by some patron, people who heard it, and who were too poor to more beer, dispersed into other nearby taverns and told the story in the hopes of getting reward.

When I traveled back in time to the stone ages, I copied the drum rhythms of the savages by memorizing them and repeating them again with my own sticks. Once when I was "camping" (in a trailer with cable TV) I got so desperate to record a song that I held my little voice recorder up to the speakers when the song played on MuchMusic. Unfortunately, I had left my water boiling on the stove and forgot about it until all the water boiled out, and it started smoking and set off the smoke detector. I still hear beeping every time I get to that part in the song, I listened to it so many times.

Did taping encourage you to buy more through you discovering and enjoying new music?

[–]jefuchs 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There wasn't much discovering done by taping off the radio. You only "discovered" what was on the playlist for the radio stations. You had to get your hands on albums to get new stuff.

(we did a lot of shoplifting in those days... especially music. Kids getting music free is not a 21st century thing.)

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yea, but back then shoplifting was easier and more of a nuisance for the owners. I remember getting caught shop lifting the owner. It wasn't like he called the cops. He just grabbed me and said give me the stuff ... took them and said don't do that again or I'll call the cops. The next day I went in and bought bubble gum and he didn't say anything.

I still use a tape daily - I have a cassette player in my car, and bought an adapter to plug into my ipod. It's not bad quality at all and it doesn't get static from nearby radio stations like a radio transmitter connection would. A direct alt input would be better, but you don't see many of those on economy cars.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You can generally have them added. Any time I've bought an economy car, I get the shit standard radio and immediately blow a chunk of money on aftermarket. I figure if I'm going to drive an economy car, I'm at least going to have decent tunes.

http://www.crutchfield.com/ - you can dial in the make and model of your car, and it'll list the radios that fit. With every stereo they include the necessary parts to install it in your car, and instructions for your car.

I haven't done an aftermarket iPod connector, but I'll bet you can get a system with an iPod pigtail that you can run to the glove compartment.

[–]zwaldowski 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What sucks now is that a lot of cars don't use "compartment" radios anymore... they use in-panel, built-in shit that costs multiple $1000's to replace.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[nod] My wife's car has one of those. I'm talking to a local car stereo place to get it replaced - they say they can do it, I haven't gotten around to going in to see what they can do.

[–]TopRamen713 0 points1 point ago

VW is the worst. Not only do they do that, but for some reason they "lock" the radio after a bit if you don't get it unlocked by the dealer when you buy it.

I replaced the tape deck of my car with a CD player when I was in high school, threw out the old one, then the next year, I got an iPod. When I realized what I had done, I did a pre-trendy facepalm

I think it'll be a while. I've never seen an 8 track before, but would recognize one from repeats of old sitcoms. Hell, I'd probably recognize a lot of things from around 30 to 40 years before I was born thanks to nick at night, tv land, and the rest. Though just a bit....off as to how it functioned.

I think the star trek episodes where they kinda, but not quite, understand 20th century technology might not be too far off.

I just recently bought tickets to the 2009 no doubt tour. I just got an e-mail with a download link that gave me everyone of thier songs, drm free! I am absolutley floored, I never thought I would see the day this happened. (I don't go to many concerts is this normal practice?) the show was put on by live nation.

[–]hopstar 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Giving away the entire library is far from normal, but a lot of bands are starting to offer digital copies of stuff in order to entice fans to buy concert tickets. I bought Flaming Lips tickets a couple of months ago and it included a free download link to 3 (or maybe it was 5) tracks from their upcoming album.

I like what Phish has been doing lately too; they process and master the soundboards and have mp3 or flac files available for download within 24 hours of the show. I'm not opposed to paying for music, and when you allow me to spend $10 for CD quality recordings of the show I just saw I'm happy to spend the cash.

I met Jello Biafra in 1996 at The Chameleon. I am not sure if that bar is still around, but it was on Mission street if my memory serves correctly. He was a nice guy and seemed genuine. Only spoke for about an hour though. I often wonder if his lyrics were a time capsule to the future. I mean California is in debt now (California Uber Alles) and Jerry Brown last I heard was going to run for Governor again.

[–]splorf 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

the chameleon was on valencia. i saw a ton of great shows there.

jello was in the audience of a show my shitty garage band played once because an act from his label, alternative tentacles, was on the bill. i didn't even know he was there until a friend of mine told me that he had been there, stayed through our set, and left right when we were done.

just wanted to brag about how cool i am.

but seriously, i always thought it was awesome that he still came out to so many bay area shows and just hung out in the back and talked to random people all night.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You are correct. I looked up the address after posting my comment. It is off of Mission, on Valencia as you state.

We might have seen each other possibly, because my story is the same. I was at a show where one of his signed bands was playing and he was there to see them. When I walked in and grab a Rogue Stout I looked over my shoulder and saw him sitting there by himself. This was back in 1996-1997 (can't remember the exact year). He took me back stage to chat with the band and we bs'd for a little while. I can't remember the bands name though.

You are correct, he is an interesting person to talk to. A lot of great stories from that guy.

[–]splorf 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i used to live off of capp st. a few blocks away and would stumble over a couple of times a week to see great bands. that was '97 or so. the champs played there like, once a week, for a long time. so many great shows in SF during that period.

always thought it was weird how jello started dressing like a cowboy after he passed 45 or so....

[–]needlefoot 4 points5 points ago

Dead Kennedys were the best when they had all their original members. ):

[–]JustJonny 0 points1 point ago

True, but it's a pretty humorous inversion of the stereotype. Usually, the cliche is that the lead singer sells out to the horror of the rest of the band, not the other way around.

Besides...Why the fuck would Levi's even want Holiday in Cambodia to sell jeans? Mocking American materialism and capitalism is the central theme of the song.

[–]anonysumo 1 point2 points ago

I'm curious whether the cassette had its copy-protection tabs intact. The two holes along the top of a cassette are supposed to prevent a tape machine from recording over it, if covered with the tabs then recording was possible.

I can't say much for the DRM then, having learned at 12 years old how to defeat it with a piece of adhesive tape.

[–]ours 1 point2 points ago

Ah, yes. The average Redditor is too young to have been familiar with the the legal wars waged on home audio-taping and VCRs. History repeating.

(Of course, as the pic shows, it was possible in past episodes, as today, to get iconoclast/emo points for hitting back at the industry while selling things for the industry.)

Here's Bow Wow Wow back in the early 80's singing about music piracy with cassettes as it was way back then .Don't laugh , I love this. By the way, the blank side concept was also employed by Island records who believed home taping spread music and encouraged uptake , whilst I have a tape somewhere of a Billy Bragg title ( I think it's Life's a Riot With Spy Vs Spy ) that has a blank side simply titled " Beat the bootlegs".

[–]littleaxe 3 points4 points ago

Ah yes, lovely work Jello. Also around that time, Island Records went with the "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" bit of logic and sold cassette tapes of its releases, including U2 and Bob Marley, with a blank side for home use. I seem to recall that move didn't sit well with the other record companies at the time, which is why it didn't last too long.

[–]emmster 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When cassettes were really new, a couple of companies would sell you the record (actual vinyl record) along with a cassette of the same album in one package. I think officially it was so you could listen to it in the car or something, since car cassette players were starting to become standard. I think it was so they could make a buck off the first copy they knew you would give to a friend. I have a good portion of my parents' record collection on cassette thanks to that policy.

[–]froggster 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

putting shit out for sale is killing the recording industry.when they issue decent music, they get consistent (if lower) sales long after the album contents leaves the top 40 lists, but the majority of crap they press onto CDs today are entirely forgotten within 3 weeks and relegated to the Dollar Bins at k-mart. the recording industry's entire business model has shifted to continuously signing new (and vastly inferior) artists rather than developing a "team" of proven performers, so of course they're losing money, but don't blame it on home recording.
