From wikipedia, in case you didn't know:

"Tesla claims he was offered US$50,000 (~ US$1.1 million in 2007, adjusted for inflation)[28] if he redesigned Edison's inefficient motor and generators, making an improvement in both service and economy.[22]:54-57 Tesla said he worked night and day on the project and gave the Edison Company several profitable new patents in the process. In 1885 when Tesla inquired about the payment for his work, Edison replied, "Tesla, you don't understand our American humor," thus breaking his word.[29][30] Earning a mere US$18 per week, Tesla would have had to work for 53 years to earn the amount he was promised. The offer was equal to the initial capital of the company. Tesla then immediately resigned when he was refused a raise to US$25 per week."

Fuck Edison :( At least he had mark twain to hang out with.

Don't forget about Topsy. Anyone who would destroy an animal purely to prove their point is a real bastard.

edit: link fail.. Topsy - thanks MistaZippy!

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Topsy FTFY.

I don't think he was really trying to prove a point. They were going to put her down anyway.

A means of execution initially discussed was hanging. However, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals protested and other ways were considered. Edison then suggested electrocution with alternating current, which had been used for the execution of humans since 1890.

This was deemed a more humane way to do it. I don't think elephants should really be kept as pets, though. They should not be put down by humans - they are wild animals and that is why they act in such ways. They should be released back in the wild. But the trainer was a real dick apparently - anyone who feeds an animal a lit cigarette should be put down himself.

[–]octophobic 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I had read his motivation for suggesting the electrocution was to prove how dangerous AC current is?

[–]geebs61 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That is exactly why Edison did it. His motives were very clear, and iirc, he killed more animals than Topsy to prove this point.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh. I didn't even know what Topsy was 'til you posted that link and I read the wiki page. But I guess you are right:

Edison had established direct current at the standard for electricity distribution and was living large off the patent royalties, royalties he was in no mood to lose when George Westinghouse and Nicola Tesla showed up with alternating current.

Edison's aggressive campaign to discredit the new current took the macabre form of a series of animal electrocutions using AC (a killing process he referred to snidely as getting "Westinghoused"). Stray dogs and cats were the most easily obtained, but he also zapped a few cattle and horses.

Source - Wired Article

But it also seems that his method would be more quick and humane than hanging an elephant. See Mary the Elephant (Pic shows elephant hanging so it may be a little risqué). Honestly, who the fuck would hang a fucking elephant?

[–]octophobic 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That is a really sad picture. I believe that elephant attacks are typically caused by neglect or abuse. (I am not ruling out unprovoked attacks though - every animal is different.) It must be difficult to effectively and humanely kill any animal as large as an elephant. Certainly there is a need when an animal is suffering needlessly but I am not sure electrocution is the best method. Did you see the video included on the wiki page?

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, the video was awful. No one can really be sure how painful certain methods of execution are. I think that the electrocution though, might be a bit quicker than the hanging. An elephant has a pretty large body - so being suspended in the air by its head cannot be comfortable at all. And sometimes one does not die immediately in a hanging. Certainly, hangings can go awfully wrong. You should read about this guy, Phil Hanna.

When Hanna was only twenty-two years old, he witnessed his first hanging, that of Fred Beheme at McCleansburg, Illinois, in 1896. The officials who conducted this execution were so inexperienced that the hanging became an accidental exercise in brutality. Deeply troubled by what he had seen, Hanna was moved to learn more about the proper manner to conduct a hanging. He read various materials and studied the subject until he became an expert. He began to officiate at hangings, directing the authorities how to proceed. Although Hanna never requested to officiate at any hanging, he was widely known for his skills, and local sheriffs and other officials across the country often requested his assistance prior to an execution.

Further down:

Hanna followed a certain protocol with the prisoner. When he arrived at the site of an execution, he visited the condemned person and announced, "I am here to help you." Hanna told people that he hoped to spare the individual some misery. He sometimes counseled the prisoners, assuring them their death would be painless. He went to great lengths to see that the subject's last request was fulfilled.

Executions should be enacted in a humane way like Hanna tried his best to ensure. There should be people that make sure it is done right if hanging is the method used. I don't think that could be very easy with an elephant. And if you were to poison him by injection or something else, it would take a very large dosage. The article said that she was given carrots with 460 grams KCN (that's about one pound) and she died in seconds. A quick death would be better than a slow one. The potassium cyanide though would be awful (I do not know why this was necessary). I do not know what the best method of death is but I think electrocution might be a better one than hanging.

Here is a list of methods of capital punishment. I personally prefer none of them for me or anyone else. I am against capital punishment for humans or animals.

[–]octophobic 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The hanging of Mary was almost definitely a prolonged strangulation. The article mentions that the first cable snapped. The picture shows no platform from which the elephant would be dropped to break the neck. They probably just wrapped the cable around her neck and hauled her body into the air. Compared to that the electrocution of Topsy was almost definitely more humane.

In both of these cases the executions were spectacles meant to entice viewers. For Edison it was to prove the dangers of AC but for the circus it was probably to establish that "justice" was done and that they are a responsible organization that takes matters of safety seriously. Who would visit a circus that lets a "killer" elephant continue performing?

I also oppose capital punishment but having humane ways in which to euthanize animals in suffering is extremely important. It's corny but I take a lot of comfort in shows like the Dog Whisperer - he tries hard to show that "problem" animals are often that way because of the way in which we interact with them and not due to their own nature.

BTW I have enjoyed our discussion even if the topic is unpleasant.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, I agree euthanasia is important for animals and it should be legalized for humans if they give consent.

I am not so sure I agree with you on the Dog Whisperer.

Methods of training vary, but most favor rewards for good behavior over punishment for bad. Cesar Millan, who runs a dog psychology center in Los Angeles and is in his second season as the host of "Dog Whisperer," calls for asserting dominance, so that the dog learns that the owner is the leader. Mr. Millan preaches that dogs need exercise, discipline and affection, in that order. He aims, he said, to create a balanced dog, but has drawn criticism for techniques like pinning a dog down or jerking on its leash.

Dr. Dodman said: "My college thinks it is a travesty. We've written to National Geographic Channel and told them they have put dog training back 20 years."

Mr. Millan's response: "Some people don't like me. I know I'm doing good."

New York Times Article

The training tactics featured on Cesar Millan's “Dog Whisperer” program are inhumane, outdated and improper, according to a letter sent yesterday to the National Geographic Channel by American Humane, the oldest national organization protecting children and animals.

In the letter, American Humane, which works to raise public awareness about responsible pet ownership and reduce the euthanasia of unwanted pets, expressed dismay over the “numerous inhumane training techniques” advocated by Cesar Millan on “Dog Whisperer.”

Several instances of cruel and dangerous treatment -- promoted by Millan as acceptable training methods -- were documented by American Humane, including one in which a dog was partially asphyxiated in an episode. In this instance, the fractious dog was pinned to the ground by its neck after first being “hung” by a collar incrementally tightened by Millan. Millan’s goal -- of subduing a fractious animal -- was accomplished by partially cutting off the blood supply to its brain.

American Humane Article

His methods seem inhumane - he uses alpha rolls and flooding.

I have also enjoyed this discussion and appreciate your insight.

"No, Mr. Tesla, we beg you to cherish this medal as a symbol of our gratitude for the new creative thought, the powerful impetus, akin to revolution, which you have given to our art and to our science. You have lived to see the work of your genius established. What shall a man desire more than this? There rings out to us a paraphrase of Pope's lines on Newton:

Nature and Nature's laws lay hid in night

God said, 'Let Tesla be,' and all was light." - B. A. BEHREND

You are wrong. WP:

There is some indication that each sought to minimize the other's achievements and right to win the award; that both refused to ever accept the award if the other received it first; and that both rejected any possibility of sharing it—as was rumored in the press at the time

They were both jerks about it, but the prize was never awarded to them.

[–]Andoo -3 points-2 points ago*

Yeah the and the fact that his dad was curator at the Vatican library had nothing to do with it. Nikola had access to some of the world's greatest collaborative scientific work. I just wish I could read some of the stuff in there being an engineering student.

Edit: sorry to piss everyone off. I didn't mean to take away from Tesla's glory. He probably is my greatest hero. My grandfather was a Ph.D. in biochemistry and did major patenting on different chlorinated processes that you see in your pools today. I have respect for what is done, I was just trying to shed some light on his history, which I also find very fascinating. Again, sorry to piss anyone off.

Yes, yes it is. It is the setting for numerous stories. It is also the setting for the most recent Cthulhu video game that came out in 2005 called Dark Corners of the Earth.

The game itself is a bit buggy, but there is a user-made patch (if you want the patch but can't find it, I can email it or upload it someplace) that fixes almost every bug and the story itself was total awesomesauce. The cutscenes were excellent too - one of the very first ones shows your character blacking out and as he goes under he sees a group of Yith come wandering over to stand above him. Total creepfest.

But Tesla was an electricity dude, and did nothing with steam. And Twain, obviously, was as writer.

Maybe if you give them some brass goggles...

I remember reading a story about how tesla, being scientific, had a large, variably vibrating platform in his work-dungeon upon which clemens would stand in order to slide around like so much electric football player, but the platform upon which sympathetically vibrating clemens stood also had the side effect of inducing bowel movements, and, upon realizing this for the umpteenth time clemens shouted: "Tesla! Where is it?!?" in reference to the toilet room in which clemens, in his purgative desire, would vacate his loosened stool.

Ms. Paltrow would have been a most welcomed guest at Nicola's lab.

You would have to be a daily Huffpo Entertainment visitor, perhaps, to appreciate my comment.

That is so interesting that this happens to pop up on reddit at the time it did. Me and a friend of mine just made a Tesla Coil that threw 20''-30'' sparks before we blew our handmade capacitor. It was amazing. We are working on version 3 of our capacitor (first one was grossly miscalculated and didn't work at all, second one was only a single unit) that will actually be two capacitors in series to have a higher voltage rating.

EDIT: Will post vids of the working model as soon as it is up again.

By the way, the 'eddit' in reddit can be considered a reminder that you can and should 'eddit' your comment to correct things like misspelled names.

Instead of first seeing his eyes looking down and notice we're staring at his eyelids, I first thought that he had pure white eyeballs due to electricity. Still cool ... but that was cooler.

It just seems to be the photography of the times (or at that particular instance) wasn't optimal.

Plenty of other pics of this online.

Plus:

Mark Twain and Joseph Jefferson in Tesla's South Fifth Avenue laboratory, 1894, Tesla's image is blurred between them.

From the Tesla Memorial Society of New York.

*Oh, and some more context on their meeting and friendship.
