The Salt Lick outside of Austin, Texas?

[–]trollindowntheriver 205 points206 points ago

I saw this on Man vs. Food I believe

[–]whatisboom 90 points91 points ago

You should go, its amazing.

[–]beerdygeek 49 points50 points ago

Come on now... we all know that isn't true. Franklin's in amazing. John Mueller is amazing.

[–]Jimrussle 23 points24 points ago

Get in line before 9am for lunch though, shit runs out fast.

[–]putzarino 12 points13 points ago

Not j muellers, or as it has been renamed, la barbecue.

Get there by 10:30 to be first in line. Bonus: free lone star Saturdays

[–]theutan 6 points7 points ago

that is his sister cooking now. she kicked him out.

[–]bakon2k6 2 points3 points ago

By the nine! I'm only 6hrs away from awesome BBQ and free beer.

[–]JulioVonJulio 18 points19 points ago

John Mueller is a drunk who cant keep his shit together long enough to run a respectable barbecue establishment.

[–]Snufflesaur 13 points14 points ago

yes Franklin beats Saltlick any day of the week except mondays.

[–]loveslut 2 points3 points ago

I'd even take Rudy's over Salt Lick to be honest.

[–]dzr0001 9 points10 points ago

Rudy's all around is OK. Nothing beats the burned edge brisket at Salt Lick. Nothing.

[–]mcknixy 5 points6 points ago

I love Rudy's and Salt Lick but the best burned edge I have ever had was ,aptly, at Black's in Lockhart. Go. Its only minutes away.

[–]psychoholic 1 point2 points ago

I might have to agree with you - especially for the creamed corn.

[–]touchmyfuckingcoffee 8 points9 points ago

Leave it to us Texans to make as big of a deal as this over barbecue. Oh, and Memphis and North Carolina BBQ's are for sissy cunts!

[–]namefaceguy 2 points3 points ago

This man is right. Listen to him.

[–]crestonfunk 1 point2 points ago

The ribs are amazing. The brisket, meh. Sausage is very good. The pickles might be the best I've ever had.

[–]WhyNotBarbershop 10 points11 points ago

You should go, its amazing.*Headphones please!

[–]pigmerlin 18 points19 points ago

Its better in real life. Also, BRING YOUR OWN BEER! swoon

[–]SCREW-IT 3 points4 points ago

I have gone with fraternity brothers and just parked a keg inside and got trashed. Best drunk place ever.

[–]zackisblacknot 8 points9 points ago

i saw this on one of the countless times ive eaten there

[–]ChiperSoft 3 points4 points ago

They did an episode of Top Chef here, as well.

[–]jmc_automatic 39 points40 points ago

That was my first thought. Looks like their pit.

[–]MTurminator21 26 points27 points ago

You know you can smell their pits from miles away?

[–]jorellh 8 points9 points ago

gives new meaning to salt lick

[–]damnBcanilive 23 points24 points ago

That place is just great.

[–]samtasticcontraption 10 points11 points ago

Not only is their food delicious but the surroundings and the staff are extremely kind as well.

[–]The_4th_Little_Pig 14 points15 points ago

Don't forget it's byob as well!

[–]Squibbles 8 points9 points ago

Was visiting Austin from Canada last year and went there. I found it hilarious that it is a BYOB establishment. And it was also awesome.

[–]redpoint13 10 points11 points ago

Not only is it BYOB but I've been there when it's so busy cops are sitting out there directing traffic not checking at all if you've been drinking... (Not that I'm saying yay let's get wasted and drive, but I'd rather not argue over the two beers on my breath)

[–]AfricanCow 5 points6 points ago

They built a winery next door where you can buy Beer and Wine

[–]YouNeedAThneed 5 points6 points ago

The Texas county it's in (Hays) was dry, i.e. no booze at all, as recently as 2006.

The county has since joined the 20th century but Salt Lick never got a liquor license, presumably since it's now firmly established that BYOB is part of the experience.

[–]elfherder 26 points27 points ago

I prefer Smitty's pits, personally.

[–]Keysar_Soze 17 points18 points ago

First time I walked in there was July day. couldn't believe I was standing next to a fire for 20 minutes to get BBQ, until I got said BBQ and THAT was glorious.

[–]friedpoop 16 points17 points ago

[–]oniongasm 2 points3 points ago

My favorite so far is Black's over in Lockhart. Still getting around to new places, but I have to:

1) Be in TX (2 weeks/yr)

2) Have TIME to drive places

[–]stony_phased 33 points34 points ago

Yes! I visited Texas last year and drove there especially... Some of the best meat I've had in my life, was not disappointed.

However, as a Frenchman, I was disappointed by the lack of people in cowboys hats with M4s strapped behind their backs. /s

[–]Crunchysocks80 47 points48 points ago

near Austin you'd be more likely to see said cowboy hat wearing individual in a pair of assless chaps

[–]viciousbreed 15 points16 points ago

Aren't all chaps assless?

[–]shamskitty 16 points17 points ago

affirmative. That place is the tits.

[–]BCouto 17 points18 points ago

God damn Americans have all the good restaurants.

[–]Rysdad 7 points8 points ago

Fuckin A!

[–]mishugashu 6 points7 points ago

Certainly looks like it. It's in Driftwood, FYI.

[–]ryntau 9 points10 points ago

this is every parilla steakhouse in Argentina

[–]CleanBill 10 points11 points ago

took me a simple ctrl+F "Argentina" to find the comment that I knew would be here..... every single time something resembling a steak or beef in a post some argentinian posts about this has to be there . I find it midly amusing :D

[–]orion262 4 points5 points ago

Best peach cobbler, EVER!

[–]Dahaole 11 points12 points ago

Actually, it's Ron Swanson's kitchen...

[–]brandonhardyy 3 points4 points ago

My immediate assumption, as well.

[–]nobodysdiary 2 points3 points ago

I could have died happy in my seat after I ate that sausage for the first time. And I don't even like sausage that much.

[–]DrBrainWillisto 131 points132 points ago

I went to this restaurant one time called The Carnivore, located in Nairobi Kenya. Could eat anything from zebra to giraffe. ANYTHING. Here is their pit

MEAT

[–]kikoualoe 38 points39 points ago

The skewers are swords?

[–]thisisnotrickross 44 points45 points ago

...that's it, I'm getting my antimalarials.

[–]UCanJustBuyLabCoats 3 points4 points ago

[–]ThatCrankyGuy 30 points31 points ago

NSFV.

[–]tinaeatyourfood 5 points6 points ago

First thing that popped into my mind when I saw this was Carnivore as well, but I don't remember them offering zebra or giraffe. I think the most out there meat they had was crocodile or alligator (I can never remember) and ostrich. Best part was the cats roaming around.

[–]Cristal_nacht 4 points5 points ago

ANYTHING

Was there any Long-pig?

[–]Toastbiscuit 55 points56 points ago

This is all I can think off, looking at that picture... http://i.imgur.com/nnXmEbi.jpg

[–]Swim2014 24 points25 points ago

Went to The Salt Lick once and got the all you can eat thing. Shit my pants later that night. Totally worth it.

[–]Toxikomania 44 points45 points ago

CAN WE FIND MORE LIKE THAT?

[–]multip 24 points25 points ago

A WORTHY FOE!

[–]Dymosthenes 12 points13 points ago

BY ALL THAT IS HOLY DO YOU SEE THAT ENEMY OVER THERE!?

[–]cakeslol 6 points7 points ago

YOU WHERE A TEMPLAR JONDDARRR

[–]matebeatscoffee 7 points8 points ago

Come to Argentina my friend. There's more "parrillas" than McDonalds in the USA.

And I'm not talking shit.

[–]Lucifersamtaco 4 points5 points ago

Go to the Texs Hill Country, one in almost every town.

[–]CanIGetaHellYeah 45 points46 points ago

Dam you Man vs Food - before this show I didn't realize all of the BBQ awesomeness that I was missing out on. I am DESPERATE to go to a place like this, I wish they had it where I live in Brisbane, Australia.

You Americans... you don't fuck around with BBQ, you have that shit locked down.

[–]Trollzilla69 39 points40 points ago

Hey maybe when we bring you guys some freedom for your oil we will bring our bbq along for the ride.

[–]CanIGetaHellYeah 10 points11 points ago

As long as you bring the BBQ, I am sure we can work something out

[–]Trollzilla69 4 points5 points ago

sounds good. we might be able to help liberate you guys yet.

[–]DUCKVILLELOL 0 points1 point ago

Gonna get crazy and drop "liberation and democracy packages" all over the place! Yay Murka!

[–]Dzak1985 6 points7 points ago

Food, glorious food! Hot sausage and mustard!

[–]PolarCool 5 points6 points ago

Looks like a Skyrim forge, but for meat!

Awesome!

[–]StewieBanana 39 points40 points ago

See? You don't have to taunt vegans for a post like this to succeed.

[–]TheSandman511 8 points9 points ago

The best beef ribs i have ever had! I think i put down 3 of them the last time I went here. Plus a bunch of their other stuff of course!

[–]Quantum_Cock 2 points3 points ago

I always go out of the way to get some Salt Lick BBQ. Hands down best BBQ that I have ever had.

[–]wellheythereguys 18 points19 points ago

Ron Swansons kitchen

[–]lobsterclause 31 points32 points ago

Not that impressed with Salt Lick actually... there's better TX BBQ out there.

[–]MrMentallo 12 points13 points ago

Smitty's and Blacks. Franklin and (formerly) J Mueller. There's quite a few.

[–]Tattered_Mind 3 points4 points ago

The Salt Lick is great and fun when with a group of people ordering the all you can eat "family style" and trying to find who can eat the most meat (and potato salad and beans)*.

*no throwing up, and no bathroom breaks Edit: here's me at the pit imgur.com/UHXYGvQ

[–]Keysar_Soze 9 points10 points ago

I never really cared for the Salt Lick either. Nice atmosphere and bands, but there are better places for BBQ.

[–]TheRealmsOfGold 2 points3 points ago

Amen. Salt Lick is unbeatable for atmosphere (although Iron Works comes close), but their brisket is useless, I think their ribs are weakly flavored, and even dessert is usually too syrupy. There are two things that I think Salt Lick wins at, though. One is their sauce, which is pretty non-traditional for Texas sauce. The other is their sausage, which is hard to beat.

Rudy's and Black's are my favorites, followed closely by Franklin's and Iron Works. Rudy's is just consistently good all around, although I stick to the north Austin location — others have been disappointing. Their brisket is actually very high quality and their creamed corn is heavenly. As for Black's, it would be my other go-to joint if it were anywhere near Austin. Their sausage is the only one I know that rivals that of Salt Lick; their brisket rivals Rudy's easily, beats Mueller's considerably, and is almost as good as Franklin's, in my opinion. Their ribs almost rival those of Iron Works, and that's saying something, although the comparison is closer for the pork ribs — I don't think anyone else comes even close to the beef ribs at Iron Works.

[–]kcorapi 3 points4 points ago

i wish i could smell this!

[–]vexyde 2 points3 points ago

Ive seen it many times while going to Xmas markets in Germany.

[–]fantazja 2 points3 points ago

[–]RustyEight 3 points4 points ago

I could go for some burnt ends right now.

[–]no_pants_lance 0 points1 point ago

[–]WillReggaeForFood 3 points4 points ago

AND it's BYOB. Yesshhh

[–]LocalJim 0 points1 point ago

The left side of my arm hurts just looking at it. Well dig in.

[–]brussels4breakfast 2 points3 points ago

That place must smell glorious.

[–]barbiegrajales 2 points3 points ago

The Salt Lick. Driftwood, TX. This is the new pit in the new wing.

[–]Narwhaldo 0 points1 point ago

Dat smell -.-

[–]busterdust 2 points3 points ago

i want an air freshener made from the smell of that room

[–]dizzl3 2 points3 points ago

Salt Lick...mmmm...

[–]sidoolee 2 points3 points ago

Goddamn it I've been there a dozen times. Who knew it was worth karma?

[–]smattbomb 4 points5 points ago

Worked there thru HS and College. Run by the greediest, most evil scumbag.

[–]Bravogasm 3 points4 points ago

Can confirm, owner is a sack of dicks. Fun people to work with though.

[–]krucz36 3 points4 points ago

[–]hispontifficence 1 point2 points ago

As a vegan and a masochist, I approve of this post.

[–]HuslinHalepeno 2 points3 points ago

As a former employee of the salt lick, I would advise to only restrict yourself to the meat. Everything else can be rat infested. I remember one night a co-worker sifting a ladle through the sauce we had been serving all night and found a dead rat. It was quite disgusting.

[–]TexasCoop 3 points4 points ago

I'm sure if you threw that rat on the grill, no one would care. Just drench it in sauce.

[–]twerple 0 points1 point ago

I've been scanning this page looking for any comments about the open trash cans... that sort of thing will definitely attract pests.

[–]Entes 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, those buckets of shit next to the food sure are appetizing. And not at all a health violation.

[–]The_Swink -4 points-3 points ago

As a vegetarian I am going to upvote this, because I appreciate that you like food. I like food as well, just different food. I also appreciate that we can all like food together with no one being a dick.

[–]Belugaa 13 points14 points ago

Not sure why you mentioned that.

[–]The_Swink 5 points6 points ago

This post. I'm not a preachy vegetarian, I'm the vegetarian who has sat and cooked meat for others. But the needlessly being a dick in the other thread seemed to get me a bit riled up, so it was nice to see someone enjoying food without pointlessly insulting people.

[–]Climb_Time 2 points3 points ago

Quick! To R/FoodPorn!

[–]Elerabin21k 2 points3 points ago

I spaced out and nearly went in to a food coma just thinking about standing that close to that much glorious pit roasted food.

mmmmm

[–]bibowski -1 points0 points ago

[–]Supernova76 0 points1 point ago

[–]infestblair 1 point2 points ago

I want to meat this place.

[–]jser809 1 point2 points ago

One of the many reasons I love my hometown. Don't come live here

[–]Cumberlandspaceman 0 points1 point ago

That place is amazing. I love salt lick.

[–]15herzh 0 points1 point ago

Fact, the Salt Lick is THE best barbeque restaurant ever.

[–]Lightzephyrx 0 points1 point ago

Absolutely the best Texas barbeque I have ever had.

Source: Born and raised BBQ obsessed Texan who has eaten at every big BBQ place in Texas.

[–]ruthless-efficiency 0 points1 point ago

As somebody who lives in a house with a 'real fire' - sorry, modern terminology solid fuel fire - I can confirm that that is an epic log fire and I have no idea how they got it like that. Firecraft is not my forte but that shit looks like it took years to get to that stage and half the Black Forest in logs to make all that white hot ash.

[–]micmacyoda 0 points1 point ago

Holy mother of meat. Mmmm

[–]FishesDelicious 0 points1 point ago

This has awoken my primal side.....UGNNNRRRAAWWWRRRRRRR

[–]Kong_Dong 0 points1 point ago

[–]bacon_catz_karma 0 points1 point ago

If you're looking for really great BBQ i recommend Lulling City Market. its fairly close to austin, and about 45 minutes from san marcos but i can assure its worth the drive.

[–]kyle2143 0 points1 point ago

I don't actually eat any meat aside from bacon, but this looks awesome.

[–]Smooovies 0 points1 point ago

This reminds me of I Saw the Devil.

[–]ballness10 0 points1 point ago

Franklin's is better...just sayin'

[–]dawnald 0 points1 point ago

One of my fav prof's JUST showed us a pic of this place yesterday...

[–]gruffi 0 points1 point ago

Th-th-th-the meat. IT'S MESMERIZING!

[–]btxst1116 1 point2 points ago

You honestly can't beat their spicy BBQ sauce. I know most Texans would say it is sacreligous to use sauce on meat, but this place is an exception

[–]omgitsafk 0 points1 point ago

looks like Carnivore in Nairobi, Kenya

[–]isaacavatarr 0 points1 point ago

You had me at "meat tornado".

[–]browner87 1 point2 points ago

This could be improved in awesomeness by putting the meat on swords

This should be labeled NSFW. Luckily I wear a condom 24/7.

[–]nameless912 -1 points0 points ago

As someone that just started their diet today, fuck you.

[–]LibertyAndTacos 0 points1 point ago

For my 18th birthday last year, they gave me free blackberry cobbler. It's not on the menu, but go on your birthday. The blackberry cobbler is probably the best thing with sugar in it that I've ever had.

And their pork ribs. I grew up in Texas, and it honestly is the best bbq in the state, if not the world.

Thank goodness I have relatives in Wimberley.

[–]upboat_ -1 points0 points ago

As far as Austin BBQ goes... Rudy's is leagues better. Salt Lick is sub-par at best.

BRING THE DOWNVOTES!

[–]pooponascoop 0 points1 point ago

The Salt Lick is awesome. You can bring your own beer but problem is you have to pay with cash.

[–]Shaun_to_the_g -1 points0 points ago

HooOOOOooooolly fuckin' shit

[–]drphilthay 0 points1 point ago

As a Texan that has had nothing to eat but spaghetti and cheap sauce for the past several days, this is pure torture.

[–]claytonlovesit 0 points1 point ago

I went there when I played SXSW.. Awesome!

[–]GoesOnTangents 0 points1 point ago

I actually smelled the deliciousness when I looked at the picture. It's either that good or I'm having a stroke.

The drooling isn't helping either.

[–]bugdog 0 points1 point ago

Fuck all y'all. I love Texas BBQ nearly as much as I love breathing and yet for some fucking reason I moved to Indiana (ah, marriage!). I could smell that pit through my tiny iPhone screen.

[–]SmartWentCody 0 points1 point ago

Saw this place on Man Vs. Food.
