So, just a gem.

[–]AbeScrapes 128 points129 points ago

Wow, that's pretty fucked up. Imagine going to visit your grandmother's grave and seeing that. Don't desecrate graves, it's not cool.

[–]iDigBeer 35 points36 points ago

Judging by the gravestone it's someone's great great great grandmother.

[–]MACP 23 points24 points ago

Genealogist here - much older than that! I wouldn't worry about the figures, I'd worry about them bumping into a headstone and shattering it!

[–]dethkarz 10 points11 points ago

Playing the devils advocate here, It wouldn't really be vandalizing anything, is it still called desecration?

[–]_mach 15 points16 points ago

Yes it is:

desecration   des·e·crate   [des-i-kreyt] Show IPA verb (used with object), des·e·crat·ed, des·e·crat·ing. 1. to divest of sacred or hallowed character or office. 2. to divert from a sacred to a profane use or purpose. 3. to treat with sacrilege; profane.

My mother just died last year and as someone who has visited the cemetery a lot this last year... I would be angered someone could be so disconnected with reality to do that for a laugh or some internet Karma.

Even if those graves were old, if a visiting family to other graves saw that nearby it would still seem disrespectful and uncomfortable. The same way one would feel if they saw their neighbors house vandalized... It's just to close to home and could have easily involved you.

Let the dead rest in peace... Just consider how you might feel if it was someone you cared about.

PS: Just because I know the internet and the way it thinks...I know there will be a small percentage of people out there who may think this is just a joke and you would laugh if someone did this to your grave so therefore everyone else should to .. So just lighten up!

Keep in mind, that doing that to a strangers grave, you have no idea what that person or their family would think about something like this. If desecration is amusing to you ... you likely are disconnected, because you never experienced death of someone close to you.

Someone shouldn't tolerate this anymore than a random stranger running up to your living mother/grandmother and pulling a mean spirited prank or disrespecting them in public and record it for some internet karma. Imagine how you would feel about that. I am sure most people would rage. This is no different.

[–]rooklaw -2 points-1 points ago

Even if those graves were old, if a visiting family to other graves saw that nearby it would still seem disrespectful and uncomfortable.

These graves appear to be over a hundred years old. While some active cemeteries do have plots that date back that far, it is just as likely that this is in an old "historical" grave yard where none of its inhabitants have any immediate family who knew them when they were alive.

Doing funny things to them is no different than doing a funny pose in front of any ancient tomb or burial monument. Like smiling and taking wacky pictures in front of the pyramids isn't seen by most as being insulting to the pharaoh.

[–]alarindris -1 points0 points ago

I'd say thinking that it makes any difference to a dead person is disconnected with reality.

I'd also say anyone who is offended by something like this is overreacting.

No one is trying to hurt feelings or insult anyone, so it's nothing like someone intentionally disrespecting your grandma.

Yes I have had people I know die. I went to their funeral but see no reason to visit their grave. It's over. I also think gravestones are pretty outdated and a waste of space in this day and age.

[–]cockyjeremy -3 points-2 points ago

Reddit, along with most of the world has gotten a bad case of pussification over the last few decades. If they can cry and bitch about something, they will.

[–]alarindris -5 points-4 points ago

Agreed.

[–]LTVOLT 3 points4 points ago

lighten up- I'd be honored if someone made a practical joke like that on my gravesite. It will melt in spring

I still visit my great great grandfather's grave on his old farm property. It's in the middle of the forest. It looks quite old and "unvisited". Recently some assholes kicked most of the gravestones in half. http://i.imgur.com/J92N96I.jpg

still not cool to desecrate a grave. no matter how old it is.

[–]josephsh 20 points21 points ago

I wouldn't equate building zombie snowmen in front of gravestones to kicking them in half, but I certainly understand what you're saying.

While I would find it hilarious to have someone build a zombie snowman in front of my gravestone if I were dead (...you know what I mean) certainly doesn't mean everyone would

[–]Turdcervix 13 points14 points ago

Dead people need to get a sense of humor...sheesh.

[–]pkennedy451 9 points10 points ago

I think it's more the relatives of dead people. Those guys are downers...

[–]-Daniel 7 points8 points ago

To anyone wondering what the deleted post said:

These are the coolest snowmen I've seen yet! I might have objected but I have to say that those stones are not the kind that would seem to have living descendants.... it really is a matter of your beleif systems. Funerals and graves are for the living in my opinion. This one has outlived that purpose. Who knows, maybe that dead person is grateful for the attention to their grave after extended isolation.

Was better in the manga.

[–]Birch_Tree 2 points3 points ago

If you took this pic with someone dragging themselves around like a zombie obscurely hidden in the background, maybe with some subtle red-eye, such that we'd only find them after taking in the immediate subjects and sticking around to scour in the details, that would have made this pic extra creepy.

[–]LaceyGucci 2 points3 points ago

Just a... HELL NO, MAN!!!

JUST a snowman? There's nothing special about it??

[–]ugly_edith 1 point2 points ago

You know who tend to visit cemeteries? Old people. Know who also tend to have heart problems? Old people. I think the snow-zombies are funny, but you could totally cause someone to drop dead. Not ok.

[–]MadScientista 0 points1 point ago

I want to downvote this because it is terrifying but it's so good that I had to upvote it.
