This is actually a screenshot from Team Fortress 3.

Gaben takes a jet and carpet bombs people with hats for the best video game launch ever

[–]vertigo1083 171 points172 points ago

Envisioning Gaben in the pilot seat of an F-18 gave me a good laugh.

[–]vegillasaurus 143 points144 points ago

F-16. Those are the Air Force Thunderbirds.

[–]1fbd52a7 256 points257 points ago

F-16?

Half-Life 3 confirmed.

[–]Ejvind 165 points166 points ago

1fbd42a7

You can't just say that and not provide the maths. 33 is 27, and 32 is 9.

33 - 32 = 18, as in F-18 that vertigo1083 commented. There have been two comments about F-16 (vegillisaurus and 1fbd52a7), then 18-16 = 2, BUT we need to include my mention of F-16s, so 2+1 = 3, thus confirming HL3.

[–]IndigenousOres 59 points60 points ago

skimmed most of your post, but read:

so 2+1 = 3, thus confirming HL3

[–]urbestfriend9000 24 points25 points ago

This comment has 3 points.
HL3 CONFIRMED

[–]IndigenousOres 4 points5 points ago

This one does too, now.

[–]N69sZelda 6 points7 points ago

now this one does too. THREE COMMENTS EACH HAVING THREE UPVOTES! WOW. Im going to upgrade my computer in preparation.

[–]Dildo_Ball_Baggins 28 points29 points ago

Once again, Gaben chose a strange way to confirm it.

[–]Speak_Of_The_Devil 18 points19 points ago

F is the 6th letter in the alphabet. Therefore
6-16 = (6-1)6 = (5)6 = 30 = 3-0 = 3

Half-life 3 confirmed.

[–]vertigo1083 5 points6 points ago

I thought they were Blue Angels. My mistake.

[–]gruesomeb 12 points13 points ago

Blue Angels fly Blue F-18s

[–]Packers91 3 points4 points ago

If I'm not mistaken the Blue Angels are more of a dread pirate roberts type job. The type of plane changes every couple years but they're still painted and referred to as the blue angels.

[–]Rjschmitt0 16 points17 points ago

You are mistaken. The Blue Angels currently fly the F/A-18 and have been since 1986. Prior to that was the A-4 Skyhawk ('74-'86), and the F-4J Phantom II ('69-'74).

[–]illaqueable 11 points12 points ago

Haha can you imagine a Blue Angels show with the Phantom? It'd be like watching walruses roll around on land, trying to scratch all the dry skin off.

[–]HoneyBadgers_Forever 6 points7 points ago

PULL UP; PULL UP

I AM WHY IS IT STILL FALLING?!

[–]PhoenixDown95 1 point2 points ago

Hopefully, it will have been worth the wait.

[–]eetsumkaus 35 points36 points ago

Cannot have Team Fortress 3 without Half Life 3.

Half Life 3 confirmed

[–]worksafety 34 points35 points ago

Gaben scours the forums, a finished copy of HL3 in his hands, ready to deploy it to the gyrating masses. Then he stumbles across someone proclaiming "Half Life 3 Confirmed" and he hides the dvd back into one of his folds muttering to himself "not today, they are not ready."

[–]zachsterpoke 10 points11 points ago

Half-Life 3 Delayed. Thanks a lot, worksafety.

[–]BHSPitMonkey 10 points11 points ago

So many scouts.

[–]CowrawlAndFheonex 11 points12 points ago

"You Get A Milkman! You Get A Milkman! You All DON'T Get Half Life 3!"

[–]miau_lalala 864 points865 points ago

Title of the year

[–]Sentient_Waffle 447 points448 points ago

I wholeheartedly concur, this is a prime example of a very good title, hell the picture is not even funny and shouldn't be here, but with the title, it's hilarious.

Good job OP.

[–]ajwhitla 37 points38 points ago

Isn't that 90% of all humor? Taking something that isn't really all that funny and getting people to laugh? Delivery always feels more important than the actual joke.

Which is why most of r/funny ends up not being funny. Most either have a boring title or posts the punchline in the title. Bad delivery makes anything unfunny.

[–]Brumworth 80 points81 points ago

And this a prime example of a 'meme' so beaten into the ground that it is probably half-way to China by now.

[–]BlueWolf07 41 points42 points ago

If you're in America and somehow manage to dig through the earth you would end up in the bottom of the indian ocean

Just thought you should know :)

[–]yourenotmakingsense 101 points102 points ago

If you're in America and somehow manage to dig through the earth, you can probably find a way to end up wherever the hell you want.

[–]RXrenesis8 14 points15 points ago

'MURICA!

[–]TalentedChrisBrown 2 points3 points ago

2007 is calling

[–]cuddlefucker 11 points12 points ago

Depends on which direction you dig. Granted, if you dig straight down, you're correct. But a correct vector could easily take you to Asia if you so desired.

[–]I_Jump2conclusions 3 points4 points ago

My creatives aren't that good.

[–]AntiHer0z 3 points4 points ago

I actually think the pic is pretty cool. Assuming nothing is photoshopped, think about what timing and precision it took for the fighter jets to fly across at the exact moment they throw up their hats.

[–]JGustav 7 points8 points ago

It's a graduation at the United States Air Force Academy. They time the Thunderbirds flyover exactly when the Dean of Academics says the Class year is dismissed (which is when the Graduating class throws their caps). So no, nothing is photo shopped.

Source: Myself- I graduated from there this past May

[–]jorsiem 15 points16 points ago

I was going to say I liked "Napping Semis" better, but I remembered we're in 2013.

[–]Amunium 12 points13 points ago

[–]TheTalkingCamelAnus 6 points7 points ago

Actually, that's "2013".

[–]Mcelite 3 points4 points ago

[–]16th_Century_Prophet 211 points212 points ago

And lo, the hats fell as hellfire from above, razing all scholars below.

[–]illaqueable 119 points120 points ago

[–]Dildo_Ball_Baggins 28 points29 points ago

As an Australian, the order of this date confused me.

[–]kingbinji 48 points49 points ago

'Murica

[–]VoodooAK 26 points27 points ago

Unless you're military, then it would be 20130122.

[–]ZedTheNameless 7 points8 points ago

Why doesn't everyone use this method? Year-Month-Day just makes sense. Everywhere else humans use number to represent something the father a digit is to the right, the smaller value it has.

[–]FightingInTheWarRoom 13 points14 points ago

It may make sense in terms of the comparison you made to other numerical representations, but in most daily usage when you're trying to convey a date to someone the year is usually a given. We write the year last because it is typically the least important or relevant information to communicate. Just my opinion, but I don't think we should invoke relative conformity in deciding these things when practicality is more valuable.

[–]TsuDohNihmh 8 points9 points ago

[–]xamnus 14 points15 points ago

As for everyone else in the world unfortunately.

[–]Renkie 4 points5 points ago

I am Dutch and what is this..

[–]DrTom 5 points6 points ago

Month-Day-Year. It's how we do.

[–]haribo_gold_bears 2 points3 points ago

If you are asking about the picture, it is from the graduation of one of the senior class at the United States Air Force Academy. The graduation concludes with a flyby of the the aerial demonstration team The Thunderbirds and with a tossing of their hats in the air.

[–]redgroupclan 4 points5 points ago

[–]temujin1200 93 points94 points ago

There should be a subreddit called /r/misinterpreted where the whole point is the post a title that is a clear misinterpretation of the image. Could be humorous.

[–]rompwns 14 points15 points ago

"Aircraft flee under heavy barrage of surface-to-air hats"

[–]mrmau5 130 points131 points ago

The title says it all I guess

[–]hpw1907 39 points40 points ago

Nope.

[–]belkarbitterleaf 174 points175 points ago

Indeed. Upon further inspection, the title does not in fact say "it all I guess".

[–]jack12354 25 points26 points ago

It does, however contain the letters to spell "it all I guess", commonly called the "There's no I in team, but there's me if you look hard enough" rule

[–]G182 7 points8 points ago

Missing a second L

[–]nosnhojttam 5 points6 points ago

Incorrect, there is only 1 "l" in the title.

[–]CptOblivion 15 points16 points ago

But if you take the c part off the d then you have an l, especially with the default font on Reddit.

[–]bob_blah_bob 16 points17 points ago

C part off the d.

C is the third letter of the alphabet.

Half-Life 3 confirmed.

[–]illaqueable 0 points1 point ago

[–]HadMatter217 4 points5 points ago

[–]Benwest456 2 points3 points ago

[–]helodriver87 21 points22 points ago

I graduated before I discovered Reddit. That's pretty much the only way.

[–]freecandy_van 3 points4 points ago

Out in the hall, greet every upperclassman by name, date of birth, birthplace, favorite movie, shoe size. Right turns only (or is it left? I seem to have repressed this.).

[–]LiptonCB 2 points3 points ago

One good thing about reposts: I see a picture of my graduation every few months or so.

[–]brotherbeck 15 points16 points ago

Had to read this title 4 times before saying fuck it I'll click.

[–]ophello 10 points11 points ago

Normally, I hate titles that don't actually describe the photo. This was genuinely funny. See that, Reddit? You must be THIS FUNNY to ride.

[–]classiqueP29 4 points5 points ago

Can we get more of these photos/new captions going? Where changing the caption gives a startling different meaning to the photo!

[–]TJPMPotatoes 4 points5 points ago

[–]Oirek 3 points4 points ago

It's amazing how much you can change the context of the image with one line of text. Bravo.

[–]Audentio 3 points4 points ago

[–]Crodface 13 points14 points ago

Pretty sure the one with the same title was posted an hour after this one.

[–]sometimesijustdont 3 points4 points ago

Most reposts are still on the front page. They get upvoted, because apparently redditors don't read reddit.

[–]Kelderm2 0 points1 point ago

Worst part is, this guy lies during submissions as well as only reposts things over and over yet always gets to the front page.

[–]MilesBeyond250 2 points3 points ago

I was going to point out that the sentence was grammatically ambiguous and made it sound like the fighters were using hats to attack a crowd, instead of attacking a crowd that was wearing hats, which I assumed was the intended meaning. Then I saw the picture.

You win again, OP

[–]pepejovi 1 point2 points ago

HALF LIFE 3 CONFIRMED

[–]Inkthinker 1 point2 points ago

A curious question for anyone who's ever attended a grad ceremony where the hats go flying, is there any way or attempt to recover your hat? We were forbidden from tossing them at my HS graduation (something about liability for injuries due to falling cardboard) but all things considered I'd still reckon this is a way for a lot of people to lose their hats permanently, or get them back severely trampled.

No?

[–]publique 1 point2 points ago

Also seems to be a retouched WW2 photo, as they're hailing Hitler.

[–]Studunne 1 point2 points ago

When will people learn

[–]emg2345 1 point2 points ago

This was the 2nd best day of my life, class of 2010. And for anyone confused this is an Air Force Academy graduation, those are the thunderbirds, which fly F16s. Which also means this picture is at least 8 months old, seeing as graduation is only in may

[–]AS_Burner 1 point2 points ago

this is better than a slave SIM plantation. upvote.

[–]emj1014 0 points1 point ago

-20 points on imgur, 3300+ on reddit.

[–]Arknell 0 points1 point ago

So, do servicemen always put their initials inside their hats, or are all these events followed by 10 minutes of hat-sorting? Because most people have different hat sizes.

[–]dfoxlord 0 points1 point ago

I guess that's one way to describe graduation at the US Air Force Academy.

[–]EManSavage 1 point2 points ago

I think there was plenty of carpet bombing going on that day, but less jets and more greasy hookers.

[–]freecandy_van 2 points3 points ago

Best moment of my life right there. 1450 days of suck (and a few awesome days) culminating in the most gratifying hat toss ever.

[–]SnowSC2 0 points1 point ago
