Is it meant to be a poster? That could easily be mass produced and sold as a wall poster. I'd love to just have it up to look at.

[–]Nirriti_the_Black 152 points153 points ago

Take my money, etc. etc.

[–]desull 109 points110 points ago

But first, shut up.

[–]throwaweight7 4 points5 points ago

I don't even think there is time to shut up.

[–]NonSequiturEdit 33 points34 points ago

A hundred times this. Get this printed and sell it on etsy or a similar site.

[–]IronTek 5 points6 points ago

This is just the sort of thing KickStarter was actually sort of created for. I think there's demand for this item, but I'm not sure, and I certainly don't want to go to the trouble if I'm only going to fill 10 orders...

[–]brewistry 9 points10 points ago

Shameless plug for my good friend who did his undergrad thesis on making mazes, which you can view and purchase here: http://maxbasch.com/wordpress1/

[–]Semyonov 20 points21 points ago

All I see is that mustache...

[–]brewistry 5 points6 points ago

See past this maze of distractions! Really though, the white part of those mazes behind him is made up of more, smaller mazes. Aint no one got time to shave when you have to draw that!

[–]RedPhalcon 395 points396 points ago

He can finally start DMing his campaign.

[–]DasBarenJager 181 points182 points ago

I started drawing out mazes in high school too, although I made them so a few fellow nerds could try them out in a Dungeons and Dragons game. My best one was a cube that was made of six interconnected square mazes that you had to traverse all six sides to complete, I put it on posterboard cut it out and even made it a fully 3D maze, it was the highlight of my DMing career

[–]RedPhalcon 85 points86 points ago

that actually sounds pretty badass.

[–]Chuckaway_Man 39 points40 points ago

Yeah! If possible...can you either remake it or find pics of it? That sounds badass!

[–]MaximumBob 50 points51 points ago

Yeah man, WHY HAVEN'T YOU REMADE IT ALREADY?

[–]bob_blah_bob 7 points8 points ago

It'll take 7 years if that's ok with you?

[–]hoikarnage 11 points12 points ago

You have five minutes.

[–]Lolo16z 9 points10 points ago

It's been 10 minutes. Has he abandoned us?

[–]MaximumBob 5 points6 points ago

Has he forsaken us?

[–]mage_sourcery 17 points18 points ago

Yeah, can you post it? I'd also like to check it out and maybe keep a replica in my gallery.

[–]DasBarenJager 20 points21 points ago

This was years ago and I never took any pictures, but I think maybe I could make another? I am in the mood for a good project.

[–]spyfoxtheboss 3 points4 points ago

dude you should make a rubik's cube maze. That like, is a maze but all the pieces have to be moved into the right spot.

[–]paladinguy 16 points17 points ago

I am subscribed the D&D subreddit (big surprise I know given my username), and my first thought was that this was a dungeonmaster who was about to inflict this monstrosity upon his poor players.

[–]goblinpiledriver 4 points5 points ago

And the players do everything EXCEPT go into the maze.

[–]Kevinsense 3 points4 points ago

I don't know what DMing means.

[–]bluestblue[S] 726 points727 points ago

Here's the backstory!

Some people have hobbies. Other people are obsessive. But when the two cross paths, this is what you get. Japanese twitter user @Kya74 recently unearthed an incredibly detailed maze that her father created almost 30 years ago. When pressed for details, the father explained that he spent 7 years creating the map on A1 size paper, which is about 33 x 23 inches.

Unsure what to do with the discovery, @Kya74 reached out on twitter but was quickly inundated with requests to receive copies. I wonder how long it would take to finish the maze?

[Update] People have been asking @Kya74 about her father. Everyone seems to want to know more about the man behind this amazing maze. This morning she wrote, “Where does my father work? At a public university!! In the athletic university!!! As a janitor.”

Washington, D.C. What a clusterfuck.

[–]officeemployee 54 points55 points ago

This makes me think you have never actually been to D.C.

It's just a big fucking grid and every street is either a number or a letter.

You'd have to have the downs to get lost in D.C. honestly.

[–]radeky 15 points16 points ago

Its not quite a grid. Its also hub and spoke. Which is totally fine as well.

[–]Semyonov 3 points4 points ago

I got lost in D.C.

But that was after the inauguration in 2009 and there were about 4 million people on the streets...

[–]Hero_of_Hyrule 3 points4 points ago

When I saw his post I first thought of the metro system. But that didn't make sense either.

D.C.'s Metro is pretty easy to follow, even for tourists.

For comparison:

[–]vertigo1083 6 points7 points ago

The fucking GPS doesn't even know wtf to do with itself when you drive through DC.

"Turn right in 1/4 mile on Church st"

"Turn slight right onto I-295 entry ramp"

[–]mcguganator 1 point2 points ago

Nice work, google cache?

[–]Roostr18 7 points8 points ago

It would actually be DoS I think. Doesn't Distributed Denial of Service imply that it is organized, or am I wrong?

[–]mcguganator 19 points20 points ago

Not really. DoS involves just one computer or network sending a shitton of packets, as opposed to DDoS which involves hundreds/thousands/more networks from worldwide sending the attack ("attack" in this case).

[–]Roostr18 10 points11 points ago

Themoreyouknow!!

[–]aaaaaaaarrrrrgh 4 points5 points ago

No, distributed means distributed, i.e. done by many people, each of them contributing only a small fraction of the load.

[–]merica821 119 points120 points ago

I wonder how long it would take to complete it.

[–]itsmoist 185 points186 points ago

I bet the artist can't even complete it.

[–]hels 144 points145 points ago

He would be the ultimate troll if there is no correct solution.

[–]SuperShamou 11 points12 points ago

Or the ultimate facepalm. D'oh!

[–]Toxikomania 62 points63 points ago

Yes he can. Try making a legit maze without knowing the answer and we'll talk.

[–]DamnReality 19 points20 points ago

You know him?

[–]jpburke 57 points58 points ago

As long as all the tunnels are continuous, there has to be a solution. That doesn't mean the artist remembers it, though. Especially if it took him 7 years to draw.

[–]BiGTeX8605 41 points42 points ago

Honestly if you spent 7 years dedicated to doing this I'm pretty sure it would be seared into your brain where the path goes. Or at the very least know where the major forks in the path are to get to the end of the line.

Escpecially if it took him 7 years to draw

Idk i see your point. but at the same time there is another side to that coin. The fact that it took him 7 years is all the more reason to believe he would remember the path.

[–]Jordo_99 7 points8 points ago

Look at it this way...he spends 1 hour making the correct path and 7 years making that path difficult to find.

Point is...7 years weren't spent on the correct path, but the wrong paths.

[–]TILonReddit 28 points29 points ago

7 days.

[–]found_Jimmy_hoffa 56 points57 points ago

6 days, on the 7th you rest.

[–]1amathrowaway 27 points28 points ago

On the 7th day a girl come out of the maze to kill you.

[–]tardisrider613 22 points23 points ago

[–]TILonReddit 7 points8 points ago

On the 8th day, the lights are shut off and you would be forced to find your way in pitch darkness while the girl is out to kill you.

[–]unohoo09 4 points5 points ago

plz copy/paste to 10 comments or u will die !!!

[–]thestaid 8 points9 points ago

Follow the right wall. When you're finished, that's how long it took.

[–]obnoxiouscarbuncle 3 points4 points ago

This actually doesn't work for this maze. The author put internal hub branches in sections, so you could bypass the solution path over and over. Pretty cool trick.

[–]JoeyJoeC 11 points12 points ago

With a scan of the image, and some quick computer coding, prob under 10 seconds.

[–]Ayestes 15 points16 points ago

I hope the coding doesn't count in the 10 seconds.

[–]deadlyfalcon89 8 points9 points ago

Bro. Do you even unit test?

[–]SuperShamou 3 points4 points ago

It's 2013. The time required to make a Visual Basic GUI Interface ain't what it used to be.

[–]carpeggio 39 points40 points ago

[–]Slime0 69 points70 points ago

Not gonna work on a maze with overlapping pathways.

[–]Slime0 9 points10 points ago

Although it's certainly possible, I don't think detecting the overlapping pathways is going to be trivial to program.

[–]moltencheese 113 points114 points ago

Aw man, this makes my MS Paint one from a couple of years ago look terrible. http://i.imgur.com/xbFHPw7.jpg

EDIT: the fact that I lost the high quality version of this is another factor in making it look bad. The key is unreadable, but basically the coloured squares transport you to and from the square of the same colour, you need the same coloured key (dot) to pass through a door, you must move in straight lines only until you hit something on the ice (Pokemon style) and you're trying to get to the crazy rainbow thing in the bottom right.

EDIT2: people seem intrigued, so here's a slightly smaller one which you can just about make out: http://i.imgur.com/dZwvzM4.jpg

[–]neohylanmay 31 points32 points ago

That's some Chip's Challenge stuff right there. I'm guessing it would take too long to redraw it?

[–]moltencheese 20 points21 points ago

Probably. I literally did it pixel by pixel in MS Paint. I remember making it so you had to unlock areas to get keys then go back and open other doors to get to teleporters that took you to the middle of some ice which then you allowed you to get another key, but then you had to retrace all your steps in order to get to the door that that key was for...and so on...

[–]I_accidently_words 19 points20 points ago

i wish you still had the high quality version.

[–]thevdude 11 points12 points ago

I'll get this redone sometime, having some success scaling it and some other things. Getting key/teleporter/door colors right is going to be hardish.

[–]Flixified 5 points6 points ago

Not sure if this will help or not but I thought it was probably worth posting:

http://i.imgur.com/ZzqrrM3.jpg

Also here is a vector version (PDF):

http://www.pdfhost.net/index.php?Action=Download&File=f3bdd04c01d2cce24933536df9840483

[–]moltencheese 4 points5 points ago

I think I love you. I had a go, but I have no idea what I'm doing and I'm pretty sure I just made it worse. If it helps, the keys are round dots and are always within square open areas. The doors they open are in similarly sized squares and are coloured lines. The teleporters are literally just filled in sections of corridor.

[–]thevdude 6 points7 points ago

I got it. It'll take a little while. Corners get all curvy and weird. I'll probably have better luck with some sort of edgefinding as well as adjusting curves and levels.

[–]ZeroCool79 10 points11 points ago

This reminds me of "Chip's Challenge", specifically the ice and the color keys/doors

[–]kbinferno 5 points6 points ago

Ice is, and always will be my favorite puzzle. Even solving it with my eyes I felt like I was placing a character in there. If you recreat this.. I must know.

[–]The_Kief_Chief 50 points51 points ago

[–]maru899 46 points47 points ago

[–]tmotom 17 points18 points ago

I used to draw mazes in high school out of a lack of something better to do. It all basically started in my Biology class where you could complete a weak ass maze for an extra credit point. Many people thought this as well, because even if the maze was hard, you could solve it just as easily going backwards. My ingenious solution was to make two mazes that connected. One forward, one backward. The backward maze was considerably shorter than the forward one.

By no means, were these easy mazes, everyone clammered to look at my mazes. They would all ask, "Ohh, tmotom! Are you drawing a maze?" And I'd say, "Yup." Which was usually followed by the very cliché, "Amazing."

[–]DasBarenJager 1 point2 points ago

I started drawing out mazes in high school too, although I made them so a few fellow nerds could try them out in a Dungeons and Dragons game. My best one was a cube that was made of six interconnected square mazes that you had to traverse all six sides to complete, I put it on posterboard cut it out and even made it a fully 3D maze, it was the highlight of my DMing career

[–]tmotom 4 points5 points ago

I filled an entire posterboard with maze for a few of my friends. I hope they enjoyed it. Or rather, are still enjoying it. It took a while to finish, not 7 years, but it was a while. The material was semi dry-erase, and I used permanent marker. So if they messed up and were fast enough, they could get it off with very few problems.

[–]DasBarenJager 3 points4 points ago

That sounds really cool, I put clear packing tape (I was too poor for lamination) over mine so they could dry erase to solve it

[–]tmotom 4 points5 points ago

Since my mother had access to a laminator in the teachers' lounge, there wasn't a whole lot I couldn't get. Heh heh heh.

[–]flanker19t 60 points61 points ago

Whoa, sick. Why did you do this and can I download a copy to give it a try?

[–]viggetuff 52 points53 points ago

[–]bluestblue[S] 497 points498 points ago

[–]bobosuda 24 points25 points ago

This made me think how awesome it would be if a computer game existed where the entire game was spent in a maze. Like, the entire goal was to get through the maze, and it would just be absolutely massive like this thing. There'd be like a bunch of other people trying to get through it as well, and hidden treasures and hints and maps and traps and stuff. Maybe even like a bunch of people who just decided to settle in the middle of the maze somewhere because it was just so freaking huge. I think it would be a pretty cool game.

Not sure how you arrived to that conclusion. A lot of the maze routes are over lapping or going underneath. http://i.imgur.com/xVYB4lA.png Simply using the fill tool will only get you so far.

[–]littlefoot09 3 points4 points ago

But you would just fill the whole map.... All the dead ends and such. I always made my mazes be one path with dead ends.

[–]westleyh 2 points3 points ago

Is there only one solution path?

[–]Aegis420 2 points3 points ago

But why?

[–]slitrobo 1 point2 points ago

Now make it into a 3D video game using Minecraft.
