This is most likely from a digital camera with its IR blocking filter removed in case anyone is wondering.

[–]Apeshaft 21 points22 points ago

Hmm... It can also be frost. These are some pictures I took in Gävle, Sweden about a year ago:

[–]masasuka 21 points22 points ago

it could, but in this case it's not, if you look at the tree stump in the bottom centre of the image, you can see a blue spot along the very bottom image, this would be a patch of moss, it would have turned out red (iirc) in an ir filter, when the colours get swapped, it accidentally turned blue like the sky.

[–]StevieSmiley 2 points3 points ago

Well, the color of the sky is unnatural also in IR and serves as good indicator.

[–]criticasartist 5 points6 points ago

These are awesome!

[–]Apeshaft 7 points8 points ago

Thank you. It was a strange combination of fog and freezing cold. It only lasted for about 30 minutes.

Here's a high resolution picture:

[–]Paljoey 0 points1 point ago

I love it when the fog freezes. Spiderwebs look so cool.

[–]IZ3820 2 points3 points ago

It's not frost.

[–]AstroRadio 1 point2 points ago

This just happened to my neighborhood in TN I'll post pics of it when I get home.

[–]LIES_LIES_LIES_LIES_ 1 point2 points ago

I've seen this too! But it's not frost, it's arboreal phosphates reacting to a night of high humidity and low temperatures.

[–]theZAE 1 point2 points ago

As an owner of an IR camera, I'll confirm that's what this was shot with. You can clearly see the wood effect.

[–]rhodohilo 0 points1 point ago

TIL My wood has an effect. Nice!!

[–]Semajal 2 points3 points ago

And replaced with a filter that blocks almost all visible light. Otherwise you just get a mess :D

[–]WorshipThyBacon 1 point2 points ago

I was thinking an infrared filter too

[–]horse_you_rode_in_on 28 points29 points ago

This is an infrared photograph with a blue/red channel swap.

[–]jonnymars 2 points3 points ago

Can you even get colour infrared film any more? Maybe one of those fancy Fuji IS Pro's?

[–]Touringcar 2 points3 points ago

Most digital cameras take infrared shots quite decent. Not all infrared blocking filters are that strong, so you just use an IR-pass filter on your camera.

As far as I'm aware colour IR film is no longer being made, sadly. Old stock can still be found, however. It was mostly the precise processing that did the film in, together with it's niche use.

[–]jonnymars 0 points1 point ago

Just googled IR pass filter, thanks, I didn't even know that existed! I'm still quite old school. I bet there's loads of cool stuff with digital i've not learned yet..

[–]horse_you_rode_in_on 1 point2 points ago

It's a bit pricier than ordinary film, but you can indeed!

[–]jonnymars 1 point2 points ago

That's the black and white stuff, which is awesome, but you used to be able to get a kodak colour one (HIE) but I don't think they make it any more, there was an aerochrome one too

[–]boredinballard 0 points1 point ago

HIE is black and white. EIR is the color infrared. HIE goes for 15-40 bucks a roll, EIR goes for 30-80 bucks.

HIE was discontinued about five years ago I believe. The last "best of" date is Feb 2008.

EIR was discontinued back in the 90's I think. Maybe earlier, I don't remember.

Aerochrome infrared came in 120 and other large sizes. You could get it in both color and b+w.

[–]taylorb1991 7 points8 points ago

Still can't deny that it's a beautiful picture

If you look through Viral_Mind's post history, pretty much all of his posts have not been original content, and have been mostly reposts.

[–]criesbecauseofrepost -4 points-3 points ago

waaaaaa!

Yeah, he's on the top 20 link karma twice. This guy has a black belt in karma whoring. http://i.qkme.me/3qjhk1.jpg

[–]allholy1 13 points14 points ago

Look through his history... they are all reposts/not original content. People like this grind my gears.

[–]Selkie_Love 26 points27 points ago

Fuckit, this is the first time I've seen it and it gets my upvote. It's amazing.

[–]CaptainFiddlebottom 13 points14 points ago

Thats what i think every time I see this repost shit.. 95% of the time I haven't seen it.

It's not like they're over at /r/walkingdead making the 1000th post saying "stay in the house carl".. or making an arrow in the knee joke. They're on /r/pics where people post millions of random pictures a day. What is the chance I saw this at the exact time someone else did?

The only real explanations I have are that some people just like complaining about it.. or some people actually think karma is worth something.

The repost/op is faggot posts are kind of more bothersome than the reposts themselves.. because a comment section will be spammed with the same generic comments over and over again in every single submission.

[–]Eurynom0s -1 points0 points ago

Agreed. Unless you can show that the person is reposting something from thirty minutes ago and got around the dupe filter by tacking a /? onto the end of the url, then who the fuck cares?

[–]RuthlessRuben -1 points0 points ago

I concur whole-heartedly my awesomely-named friend!

Even in the event I do catch a repost as such, the "Oh my Lord! A repost! Break out yon pitchforks and torches!" posts get on my nevers way more.

They can downvote our comments, but the truth shall set us free.

[–]UtMan88 2 points3 points ago

[–]HookDragger 2 points3 points ago

I still don't think you're a bot.

[–]IZ3820 2 points3 points ago

Why not? Find a post with 17 syllables and break it down. Simple for a computer.

[–]HookDragger 2 points3 points ago

He's made mistakes before(on some of my posts)...

And other times I intentionally responded to his post in a haiku formatable post and it gets left alone.

[–]thevdude 1 point2 points ago

finding syllables isn't the easiest task. But that might lead to the

He's made mistakes before(on some of my posts)

below.

[–]IZ3820 1 point2 points ago

True, but finding syllables is something computers often have built-in programs for. There is most likely a program on your computer where you can type in a phrase and your computer will then say it, albeit in a monotone, robot-like voice. Well, the phrasing of each word is built into this program, so accessing the dictionary of this program would allow a bot to count syllables. This would also account for incorrect haiku because not every word is pronounced correctly, as anyone who's dicked around with this program in their 5th grade class while they were supposed to be working on an assignment they couldn't care less about would know.

[–]thevdude 1 point2 points ago

I'm sure I don't have a text to voice installed on my computer. I'd remember installing it.

[–]IZ3820 1 point2 points ago

It's standard on most computers. I think it's in accessories.

[–]thevdude 0 points1 point ago

I'd know if I installed it on my archlinux install, having handpicked packages other than base and base-devel.

[–]IZ3820 0 points1 point ago

Like I said, standard on most computers.

[–]IZ3820 1 point2 points ago

Just so you know, this came off as being a little pretentious.

[–]IZ3820 0 points1 point ago

It's called Narrator.

[–]Touringcar 0 points1 point ago

but finding syllables is something computers often have built-in programs for

No, that's something you'd program and which isn't terribly hard to do.

[–]IZ3820 0 points1 point ago

Every Windows OS since XP at the latest comes with Narrator built in.

[–]shizzler -1 points0 points ago

Why is reddit obsessed with haikus? Honest question.

[–]Touringcar 0 points1 point ago

It is not 'converted to normal light', nor has the sky anything to do with it.

It's just a channel swap, normal for IR shots.

[–]Th3Harbinger 2 points3 points ago

Blue skies from pain. Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail? A smile from a veil?

[–]rocketparrotlet 0 points1 point ago

Stop stealing other people's pictures. We've all seen them before. Douche. Create something of your own.

[–]kilroydacat 0 points1 point ago

Haiku Robot you come to reddit and make jibba jabba sound cool.

[–]jamesl75 0 points1 point ago

As others have mentioned, this is achieved using an Infrared filter (likely the Hoya R72) on an IR modified digital camera (remove the IR blocking filter) with the Red and blue channels swapped.

Years ago I wrote a partial tutorial on how to do this: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/post/5180203

I have a lot of these on my website

[–]it_wasnt_me_ 0 points1 point ago

eerily similar to Mandelbrot's fractals. it is the purest form of beauty.

http://hubaisms.com/maps-of-the-mind/fractals/mars-fractal/

[–]JimmyDThing 0 points1 point ago

That was my EXACT reaction as well. Do tree's/leaves not follow a fractal pattern as well?

[–]it_wasnt_me_ 0 points1 point ago

well that is the idea. that if you keep "zooming out", we as humans, cant decipher what is reality and what is not. unending patterns in all natural beauty.

[–]JimmyDThing 0 points1 point ago

No, I mean tree growth patterns as well as branches within trees actually follow a pretty rigid fractal pattern.

[–]AdmiralFOCH 0 points1 point ago

That's one badass fucking fractal.

[–]merkins_galore 1 point2 points ago

Repost

[–]PoorlyBuilt -3 points-2 points ago

Gonna guess this fake simply because trees are never that white.

[–]KYLE-BROFLOSKI 2 points3 points ago

I'm pretty sure it is. OP posts stuff like this constantly and never provides the source.

[–]pen_is_mightier 3 points4 points ago

like.... reposts?

[–]KYLE-BROFLOSKI 4 points5 points ago

Yes! I couldn't remember the word, thank you. Edit - If this comes across as being sarcastic, it's not.

[–]Malgas 3 points4 points ago

Probably not fake, but not a "normal" photograph either.

This is what trees look like through a digital camera with no IR filter.

[–]msirelyt -1 points0 points ago

What? That is not what trees look like with a digital camera. You need an IR filter for your digital camera for them to look like that.

[–]Malgas 0 points1 point ago

Digital camera sensors are sensitive to the infrared spectrum, in addition to visible light. You need an IR filter (to filter out those wavelengths) in order to take "normal" looking pictures. It is usually built in to the camera by design, but this is what happens when you remove it.

[–]msirelyt -1 points0 points ago

Right so doesn't an IR filter impede the infared rays from getting through the lens in the first place? I have never seen a digi camera where you can select a setting from a menu and remove IR. But then again, I am not a photographer, just a techy.

edit: Also I was going off what I found here

[–]msirelyt 0 points1 point ago

It's called an IR filter. Not sure why you are getting down voted.

[–]iamthatoneguy 0 points1 point ago

I saw this like last week!! How is it getting upvotes??? Kill it!
