Little boxes on the hillside, little boxes made of ticky tacky, little boxes on the hillside, little boxes all the same. There's a green one and a pink one, and a blue one and a yellow one. And they're all made out of ticky tacky and they all look just the same :D

They're lawyers and doctors and business executives and they're all made out of ticky tacky and they all look just the same.

This is exactly what I think every time I see this repost. Such an enchanting song.

Came here to post exactly that.

That would be it. My aunt moved into one of these and it was scary how each house was exactly the same ( except paint and some other things ) the back yards, the design, the interiors etc.. I really didn't like it too much..

If hell is real, this is where all the commuting demons live.

Summerlin?

Reminds me of Edward Sissorhands.

I wouldn't like to live there, but I'll be honest, I like the feeling of structure and order.

The US grid/block system appeals.

When I was a teenager I worked as a framer in development communities like these in the high desert north of Los Angeles. There were 5 models to choose from and on a good day three of us could frame up 3, maybe 4 houses per day.

wow

[–]searstream 1 point2 points ago

Wow almost no cars are parked on the street. Must be some type of miracle.

[–]ThatSpuds 1 point2 points ago

Probably a housing association rule. My sister lives in one of these in St. Louis, and if you park on the street, the Housing Association has a private tow company of their own that will tow your car and it will cost $100s to get it back.

[–]searstream 1 point2 points ago

This is in our HOA rules as well. But people have won cases vs them since the streets are technically city property and not under the jurisdiction of the HOA.

[–]ThatSpuds 2 points3 points ago

I like hearing about people winning over the HOAs.

I despise them.

[–]folk_zombie 1 point2 points ago

fuck that

[–]stun 0 points1 point ago

Am I the only one who thinks it looks depressing?

[–]dominoconsultant 0 points1 point ago

Considering the climate there should be more large trees planted along the streets.

[–]VampiricCyclone 0 points1 point ago

There isn't really enough water for that.

Allot of Vegas is like this, the really weird thing about it is how normally suburbs like this would make higher or middle class area distinct from poorer areas- here it's a total cluster fuck.

Sometimes you have no idea if you're in a posh upper class community or a neighborhood you badly need to watch your back in. It's less ticky tacky and more just how quickly this town exploded into being from almost nothing.

I worked landscaping in Summerlin/Henderson for a time, not that you should take my anecdotal evidence at face value, but if what I saw was indicative of anything allot of those houses no longer have people in them, and bank notes taped to the door.

I sometimes get the feeling that given another 50 years or so there will be much less than even that to gawk at.

[–]Seandeci 0 points1 point ago

I live in those suburbs and they are the most boring, uncreative homes and communities I've ever seen.

[–]nubealer 0 points1 point ago

This is how I set up houses in Black and White 2.

[–]branduNe 0 points1 point ago

A lot of ridiculously expensive McMansions are set up exactly like this in suburban Vegas, its crazy that insanely rich people who "make it" decide to buy houses that have 3 feet between them and the next huge square house.

The picture does of course not get worse from a repost. History has shown that many people like this.

[–]fafaforza 0 points1 point ago

Sure, it looks dull, but you can't really do much on flat land with no discernible artifacts, not even a tree line, no hill, no pond. Just flatness and sand.

[–]VampiricCyclone 0 points1 point ago

People have to live somewhere. They'd like to have their own place, so they can have their own life. They don't have millions of dollars, so they require housing that can be made efficiently.

Especially when housing was ridiculous and a 1200 sq ft house cost 35x the average gross annual income of the region.

These developments maximize efficiency while giving a slight feeling of separation by being curved (so that you have no sight lines that go more than a short distance, and thus can't see endless miles of densely-packed similarity.
