Similarly, Lockpicking!

[–]Mustangarrett 34 points35 points ago

I dont understand what keeps each up once picked? Why doesnt the spring push your accomplishment right back down once you move onto the next?

[–]bobstay 54 points55 points ago

Because at the same time as pushing at the pins, you're applying turning force to the lock (that's what the black thing at the bottom is for - called a torque wrench). That turning force is resisted by the pins where the break (between red and blue) isn't yet aligned with the break between the cylinder and the stationary part of the lock.

Because the machining of the lock can never be perfect, only one of the pins will be providing the majority of that force (shown in this gif by a little grey oval). When you push up that pin, it catches on the lip between the clyinder and the stationary part and stays up. The cylinder rotates a tiny bit, and then is stopped by the next pin (see the grey oval move). Repeat for each pin, and the lock opens.

This right here is the pinnacle of my user experience on reddit. The OP was simple and interesting and I learned how basic locks worked. I came to the comments looking for a gif for lock picking and found it to be the top comment. I was left with a question after viewing which turned out to be expressed already in the first reply. I then found your concise and clear explanation answering my recently formed question.

In about a minute I watched two gifs and read 2 short paragraphs which gave me a basic understanding of a concept I was previously unfamiliar. All this while taking a dump.

That is also a very simple lock, if you start looking at spool pins etc things become considerably harder. A much easier way to do it is to use a pick gun that works similarly to a bump key.

Good explanation of how different pins work: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4hoGY3SAtU

"Tension wrench, often called a torque wrench"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lock_picking

[–]sleestakarmy -1 points0 points ago

Tension Wrench. Different sizes and thicknesses depending on the lock type you are picking. For example, Weiser residential locks have weaker springs and by using a lower tension you can pop them open easier.. /7 years as a locksmith

[–]raging_asshole -2 points-1 points ago

They're actually usually called "torsion wrenches" or "tension wrenches."

[–]h2g2Ben -1 points0 points ago

I've often heard them called tension bars.

[–]renfieldsjournal 8 points9 points ago

The bottom tool is used to turn the lock. You apply slight pressure to this tool, as if you were trying to turn the lock, but not with full force. As the pins go up, the torque on the lock keeps them from falling back down (a tiny ledge is created by slightly turning the lock). Also, when the pin goes above the "ledge", a slight click is heard, letting you know you set that pin, and the lock will give a little more. Once the final pin is set, the pressure being held by the bottom tool will give, and the lock will turn freely. ...I'm bad at putting this into words... maybe someone can explain it better than I can...

[–]sevenofk9 11 points12 points ago

You are applying slight rotational pressure with the tool at the bottom (the tension wrench). It can be tricky :-p

[–]Andygoesrawr 9 points10 points ago

Wait, so Skyrim is kind of accurate?

[–]Lintybl 9 points10 points ago

Take Oblivion and Skyrim and you pretty much have it.

[–]Lightning-Dust 5 points6 points ago

With that gif more like Oblivion

[–]dxguy10 0 points1 point ago

Damn, now I want to play Oblivion again.

[–]xaoq 2 points3 points ago

Now instead of carefully picking each pin... just slide the lockpick in/out very fast.

had much better results that way, ~10-15 seconds and opened without any skill involved haha.

[–]NSNick 2 points3 points ago

This is called 'raking', for the uninformed.

[–]demontits -1 points0 points ago

I bet this is the exact same way you have sex

[–]yoyodude2007 1 point2 points ago

locks are pretty cool

[–]Giossepi 1 point2 points ago

I have always meant to pickup a lockpick set

[–]raging_asshole 1 point2 points ago

Just be careful, it can be illegal to possess lockpicks under certain circumstances.

In Calfornia, for example, if you're carrying them while committing any other crime, you could potentially be charged with possession of burglar tools and/or intent to break and enter.

[–]Giossepi 0 points1 point ago

I am in vermont, I do not believe such laws apply, but thank you for the concern, I shall look into said laws

[–]ChainsawZz 0 points1 point ago

And now i want to try this. Can you break your lock?

[–]dylan1547 16 points17 points ago

lockpicking increased to 34

[–]Darknezz19 17 points18 points ago

now look up bump keys to see how they don't work.

[–]isthisforeverYES 4 points5 points ago

I'm sure they don't always work, but snopes seems to think they work at least sometimes, as do many security experts.

[–]bringurown6pack 7 points8 points ago

As a locksmith, I can confirm this. I prefer to pick or drill locks. Bumping isn't the most reliable method of bypassing locks, but it can work. Used to have a coworker that was pretty skilled at it, though, so to each their own, I suppose.

[–]isthisforeverYES 3 points4 points ago

Thanks. As a locksmith, have you ever unlocked someone's balls?

[–]bringurown6pack 1 point2 points ago

This is actually how we train our apprentices here. We've yet to find a quicker way to teach picking.

[–]balathustrius 1 point2 points ago

I've never managed to successfully bumpkey a lock. I have, however, raked open my own apartment door lock with a key from someone that lived two floors above me.

[–]BALLS_AND_SHIT 1 point2 points ago

you essentially do this all at once in a really quick but unreliable way. Potentially (provided you have the right bumpkey) it can be faster than picking, but there's too higher chance it won't work at all, especially on newer locks.

[–]Hugh_Jampton 23 points24 points ago

I spent far too long watching this on a loop

[–]Polishedraccoon 36 points37 points ago

I swear Reddit teaches me how keys work at least twice a month.

[–]sommergirl 6 points7 points ago

And I'm still not sure

[–]Dardove 0 points1 point ago

What part aren't you sure about?

[–]NomOnBacon 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, uh, how come there's just a floating lock?

[–]Dardove 4 points5 points ago

[–]cynicproject 0 points1 point ago

Holy shit. That unicorn on his shirt glitters once right as he's done. Would that be one glit?

[–]noneedtoprogram 0 points1 point ago

I think that would be a glint.

[–]SweetNeo85 0 points1 point ago

You know where they have lots of OC? Outside.

[–]TheQuassitworsh 10 points11 points ago

I like how a gif is put into /r/pics.

One of the differences between Finland and the rest of the world is that in Finland, the Abloy (short for Ltd Lock Factory Lock Factory Ltd) brand of locks has a near-monopoly.

Anyhow, the Abloy locks are disc tumbler locks, which work on a different principle from pin tumbler locks shown here. They're also much more secure against picking.

So when I saw keys and locks in foreign TV or movies, they always seemed strange. And of course it was also one of the first signs my young self noticed telling me that the outside world is full of barbarians without proper locks.

[–]TheOdinson6690 2 points3 points ago

Reminds me of my Sam Fisher days.......

[–]mlillick 4 points5 points ago

I like how this is the 3rd time I've seen this this week...

[–]Reggie_Dunlop 1 point2 points ago

Well its the first time for me, so go outside or something.

[–]Non_Drifter 0 points1 point ago

Reminded me of ES oblivion lol

[–]stampepk 0 points1 point ago

I watched that gif for way too long.

[–]coffee_code 0 points1 point ago

I've known for a long time how locks work but I still watched this gif about 30 times.

[–]R009 0 points1 point ago

Does anyone know of a gif of a car ignition key? (Key that is the same on both edges)

[–]conmimente 0 points1 point ago

At the lockshop I used to work at we had a demo cylinder that was cut away so that you could see the inner workings just like this. It was one of my favorite things about that job

[–]skarface6 -2 points-1 points ago

How rules work:

No animated images. Please submit them to /r/gif, /r/gifs, or /r/reactiongifs instead.

[–]Cryogenicist 1 point2 points ago

Enlightening!

[–]happywaffle -1 points0 points ago

I have an OCD orgasm watching the pins line up at the end.

[–]FUCITADEL 3 points4 points ago

Don't watch the pins, watch the shear line instead. Nice and even.

[–]Scrotonimus -1 points0 points ago

This is possibly the greatest thing I have seen on this website.

[–]RiotBananas 7 points8 points ago

This is possibly the largest piece of hyperbole I have ever seen in the entire universe.

[–]iamgoinginsane 1 point2 points ago
