Jesus fucking Christ. I saw this about 3-4 months ago on this same subreddit in the same damn place on the front page.

Morons -- Mars is not that red, and the software used to simulate this is on the bottom left.

[–]TheHairyHungarian 6 points7 points ago

Despite all that it's still cool to dream.

[–]JesZ-_-97 1 point2 points ago

Earth is nowhere near that large. Curiosity took a picture of the sun, and it's only maybe 2-3x that size, so yeah, definitely fake.

[–]blueberrymuffin69 3 points4 points ago

Is earth larger than the sun when seen from Mars? Earth may be way smaller, but it is also way closer...?

[–]Dwaligon 3 points4 points ago

Mars is half our size and is just a small speck in the night sky. I suspect Earth looks pretty similar except bluish.

[–]Petedabeat 3 points4 points ago

More just whiteish. And earth in the martian sky acts similarly to venus in our sky.

[–]emj1014 1 point2 points ago

Does it have an atmosphere and clouds? Or is that also fake?

[–]fristoff 0 points1 point ago

Clouds on mars? That's proof not just of water, but of a water cycle!! I thought this was some rare photo from the Ruski Veneras that I never knew about.

[–]xFoeHammer 1 point2 points ago

Plus, what are the chances that Earth, Mars, Mercury, and Venus would all be lined up like that?

That's how I knew it was fake. You're right that Mars isn't that red but NASA often adds a more reddish color since the real color is kind of bland.

[–]Kalkaline -2 points-1 points ago

Just downvote and move on before you give yourself a heart attack. People will read the meme in a couple of days hours that explains that they got fooled...again.

[–]geo877 0 points1 point ago

However, this is: Pale Blue Dot

[–]ManicPixieFuckUp 0 points1 point ago

Doesn't matter. Was getting real sick of people pointing to really big shit and being like "seee?!?! Look how small we are!"

We get it. Our planet is tiny. There's a lot out there. And most of it is fucking nothing. And the parts that aren't nothing, we're probably not going to see. I know things have been lonely since Daddy Yahweh left but Goddamn.

[–]wouldyounotlikesome 143 points144 points ago

real martian sunset

Imgur

[–]TRiPgod 14 points15 points ago

This is what Earth looks like from Mars.

[–]zptramel 30 points31 points ago

Is it because the martian atmosphere is less than Earth's that the sun is paler? Answer me within 18 minutes.

[–]wouldyounotlikesome 23 points24 points ago

I believe it appears faint because it is much farther away, and why 18 minutes?

[–]ZeGermans750 24 points25 points ago

"Farther". Farther is for quantifiable distances, "Further" is for metaphorical distances.

[–]not_rhonda 28 points29 points ago

I genuinely did not know this, but plan to grammarbully others about it in the future. Thanks!

Please don't hurt wouldyounotlikesome, here's something else that might help: it may have something to do with dust/water particles in the skyt but i dont actually know anything about this

[–]zptramel 3 points4 points ago

That was an awesome read! Thanks! I enjoyed reading about what it would be like to view space from other planets; I just realized how amazing it must be to see Saturn's rings from Saturn. Goosebumps!

[–]ColbyandLarry 3 points4 points ago

"Answer me within 18 minutes" -- you made me spit out my beer :)

[–]I_Am_A_Pumpkin 2 points3 points ago

it's the dust and particles in mars' air, it's like looking at the sun through fog

[–]ADD_Ninja 1 point2 points ago

Yes why 18 minutes??

[–]asdbffg 1 point2 points ago

On Earth, oxygen and nitrogen in the air scatter blue light, giving the sky it's blue color. During sunset, the light travels through more air to get to your eyes, and most of the blue has been reflected. We see the remaining wavelength, which is why sunsets appear red or gold.

On Mars, light is mostly scattered by dust, which reflects the red wavelength. During sunset, most of the red has already been scattered, and what remains are the cooler wavelengths. So Martian sunsets appear faintly blue.

[–]InDeoRideo 1 point2 points ago

Yes, the yellow hue of the sun we see on earth is due to the atmosphere.

[–]Mehowthegreat 3 points4 points ago

Whenever I see the sun on mars. Realize that's how small it is on the sunset, and how it must be smaller at mid day. Makes me realize how cold it really must be on that planet.

[–]DarknStormies 6 points7 points ago

It's the same distance at dawn, noon, and dusk.

Pale Blue Dot

[–]matwill 9 points10 points ago

For those interested, Pale Blue Dot is the name of a much older photograph (wiki on it) taken by Voyager 1 at 'the edge of the solar system' / 'distance of about 6 billion kilometers' and was where Carl Segan got the phrase from.

The parent comment photo was titled as "In Saturn's Shadow - the Pale Blue Dot"

Look at that photo and let those words rattle around in your head. Unreal.

Heres the CICLOPS page for it

And full size image

[–]State_of_Iowa 0 points1 point ago

why is the Sun black?

[–]matwill 0 points1 point ago

Oh my God, State_of_Iowa. You can't just ask suns why they're black.

[–]nhpip 0 points1 point ago

[–]syscofresh 2 points3 points ago

[–]32koala 6 points7 points ago

There is a satellite orbiting Saturn. This is a picture taken when the sun was behind Saturn. That tiny dot in the background is everything humanity has ever known until the 1950's.

[–]wiretapp 1 point2 points ago

... we were discovering moons around jupiter about 400 years before that...

[–]32koala 2 points3 points ago

Yes. For 400 years we knew Jupiter had 4 moons, the Galilean moons.

Since the 50's we have discovered 63 more moons.

[–]wiretapp 2 points3 points ago

so to say "everything humanity has ever know until the '50s"

seems to disregard a few thousand years of astronomical discoveries.

[–]32koala -2 points-1 points ago

But did we really know anything about those 4 moons? Did we know what they were made of or if they harbored life? No. We know that now, mostly.

[–]lewikee 1 point2 points ago

Er...what? What happened in the 1950's in regards to that tiny dot?

Edit: I mean, since this picture was taken well after the 1950's, why can't that tiny dot signify what happened after the 50's also? And why did he say "until"? If he had said "after" it would have made more sense (the space age).

Before AND after the 50's is what I think of when I see that tiny dot.

[–]summerinside 13 points14 points ago

Monkeys started strapping themselves to explosives and shooting themselves off of the rock they had known as home.

[–]space_monster 7 points8 points ago

you died. everything since then has been angels and devils burning your soul from the earth. only when you truly accept your death will you be able to move on.

[–]32koala 1 point2 points ago

why can't that tiny dot signify what happened after the 50's also

Because before the 50's everything we knew was on that dot. After the 50's we sent some things out beyond the dot... We even sent some people to another dot. And we started to take pictures of things and understand things that were very far away.

[–]Broshaq 2 points3 points ago

That photo is comparing the size of the Earth to Saturn. In reality they're ~ 800 million miles apart. That's why the earth is a tiny dot in the other picture.

[–]2muffins 1 point2 points ago

[–]Broshaq 1 point2 points ago

One day a mother will start telling her child a bedtime story and point out through the window, into the distance and say in a very quite yet proud voice "that's right, son, mummy and daddy used to live there"

[–]wtfisdisreal 38 points39 points ago

She's pointing at the apartment they used to live in.

[–]thisishow 14 points15 points ago

[–]fuuupa -1 points0 points ago

Venus and the Sun?

[–]second_to_fun 1 point2 points ago

No, aren't those deimos and phobos?

[–]fuuupa 0 points1 point ago

I'm not exactly sure, actually. I just know that picture hasn't actually happened since Curiosity has landed there.

[–]second_to_fun 0 points1 point ago

What do you mean? There have been many mars rovers before it.

[–]fuuupa 0 points1 point ago

The picture clarity and resolution only make sense for curiosity, though. And still not really.

[–]second_to_fun 0 points1 point ago

What about spirit and opportunity?

[–]omaknight 2 points3 points ago

Has the curiosity rover taken a picture similar to this one? I would love to see a real version of this honestly.

[–]fuuupa 0 points1 point ago

Not that I'm aware. Although this can happen (I don't know the frequency, however), this was simulated.

[–]_princessbubblegum_ 2 points3 points ago

Tatooine?

[–]f1guremeout 2 points3 points ago

I can see you from wayyy over here

[–]Soopernole 2 points3 points ago

Simply amazing that this fakery keeps coming back.

[–]t0m0hawk 2 points3 points ago

Not this shit again... FAKE

[–]JimmyMack_ 0 points1 point ago

That's not Earth, that's a star called Alnitak in the constellation Orion. That band of 3 stars makes up Orion's Belt.

[–]NewClearWinter -1 points0 points ago

I can tell this picture was taken in Mexico because everything is orange and looks like a desert.

[–]lth5015 -2 points-1 points ago

This may be fake but it reminds me of Venus and Jupiter rising together just before sunrise (over Earth) all summer long. Beautiful sight to behold.

[–]Bruce_Leenus 1 point2 points ago

TIL Earth is in the constellation "Orions left leg"

[–]lilljadp 0 points1 point ago

Does anyone know what the other two objects are?

[–]2k13aquila 0 points1 point ago

FTFY OP

[–]MiDMaC 0 points1 point ago

What is that though really? is it a constellation? Kinda looks like Orion to me.

[–]billcom6 0 points1 point ago

Take my word for it, it's not really that amazing here.

[–]frapawhack 0 points1 point ago

this, like so much today, has never ever happened before

[–]frapawhack 1 point2 points ago

ah heck. this is fake? where's the poetry in that?

[–]Orobin 0 points1 point ago

I'm reminded of the picture taken by Voyager 1, the pale blue dot.

[–]RaelBug 0 points1 point ago

How does it know!?

[–]lisabadcat 0 points1 point ago

That constellation is called "Orion's Taint".

[–]TwinkleTwinkie -1 points0 points ago

Seeing these pictures from Mars makes me think that some day, before I die, man will begin to truly travel the Solar System...then again the USA made a bigger deal out of Hostess going out of business than the latest rover landing on Mars...

[–]dailyplano -1 points0 points ago

Since there are clouds on mars. Shouldn't there be water in those clouds. And did I just find water on mars?

[–]Zooperman 0 points1 point ago

why is it pointing to empty space?

[–]pokemon_tits 0 points1 point ago

Why is this being up voted?

[–]TickleMyTip 0 points1 point ago

hey, i can see my home from here.

[–]Cyborg771 0 points1 point ago

I know this is fake, but are there actually any images of Earth from the surface of Mars or is it not visible? I guess pretty much any time you could see Earth the Sun would also be visible and it would be so bright as to block out the Earth.

[–]dazmo 0 points1 point ago

I Thought I saw a blurry tower ascending from the surface in the distance, then realized i need to clean my monitor.

[–]geo877 0 points1 point ago

That one isn't real However, this is: Pale Blue Dot

[–]estrangedpenguin -2 points-1 points ago
