This happened at my university one year. I was working as at the student newspaper at the time and got put on this story. The chef who wrote the menu was black and wanted to celebrate MLK Day with a traditional southern meal. He saw nothing racist about it, and nobody I spoke with in any place of the color spectrum gave a damn.

Honestly, I think it's white people being over-sensitized to what might be perceived as racism.

[–]joshemory 1135 points1136 points ago

It's extremely overly sensitive. MLK Jr was born in Atlanta for christs sake. The menu is a traditional southern menu. That's it. White people in the south eat the same shit.

[–]CorpseEye 642 points643 points ago

Resident of Atlanta here. I saw that menu and immediately got hungry.

[–]luhg89 344 points345 points ago

White guy, grew up in Atlanta......this an every day meal for me. Really hungry now.

[–]HerroKitty_ 242 points243 points ago

Live in LA, still hungry as shit.

[–]davebu 258 points259 points ago

I'm in France right now, we can't get any of that shit. All we can eat here is fucking cheese.

[–]atcoyou 35 points36 points ago

But your wine... my god. I went to Pizza Hut in Paris (ya we arrived late), and still had an amazing wine. I mean we don't get anything like that in Ontario. Even expensive bottles weren't as good as a cheap wine from a fast food joint... makes me so sad. I never understood how wine could quench ones thirst so much!

Edit: Lot of people confused if I am talking about VQA etc, I am speaking about both domestic and foreign wines I can obtain in Ontario. It is actually probably more on the California/Austrialian side of things, as that is what I would drink most often, but European wines I buy here are the same.

[–]canamrock 68 points69 points ago

Sacre bleu! Even their cars drink better than us!

[–]Binary_Fission 21 points22 points ago

You're saying that like only eating cheese is a bad thing?

[–]hemingwayszombycorps 25 points26 points ago

North Carolina(upstate NY originally) reporting in, add green beans and white potatoes in ham base(WITH the bone you savages) and texas pete and i will be in heaven. Pigs feet would be a plus. And chitlins, thank you.

[–]Teabaginz 24 points25 points ago

texas pete

You must get your salsa from New York City.

[–]shadmere 31 points32 points ago

NEW YORK CITY!?

Though to be honest, I prefer Texas Pete to Tabasco sauce. I think it might be a Carolina thing? Everyone I knew in NC used Texas Pete. Most people had Tabasco in the cabinet, too, but Texas Pete was the everyday "go to" hot sauce.

Here in Oklahoma, I don't think I've seen it at anyone's house.

[–]TopHatHelm 11 points12 points ago

NC resident here. This is correct.

TEXAS PETE 4 LIFE.

[–]Mamamilk 2 points3 points ago

I don't understand your comment. Texas Pete is a North Carolina thing, its based here, my grandmother worked most of her life for the company (T.W. Garner) in central NC. Maybe I'm missing something here.

[–]Teabaginz 2 points3 points ago

It is from the old Pace commercials

Ihavenoaffiliationwithpace

[–]flyingweaselbrigade 2 points3 points ago

Texas Pete is made in Winston Salem, NC, so it's got the local advantage here. I use Tabasco because I'm also a transplant from NY, and never liked Texas Pete. The locals consume it by the quart.

Transplant high five to hemingwayszombycorps

[–]HerroKitty_ 78 points79 points ago

Give me a burrito and some tabasco and I'm ecstatic.

Edit: WHO THE FUCK DOWNVOTES BURRITOS! YOU'VE EARNED MY WRATH!

[–]SHEEEIIIIIIITTTT 10 points11 points ago

I don't really like burritos but have an upvote anyway.

[–]HerroKitty_ 6 points7 points ago

Thanks, do you mind telling me why you don't like them? I've just never met someone who didn't.

[–]jay_who 5 points6 points ago

As a Mexican i too love burritos... and also the mlk menu

[–]Yerkin_Megherkin 58 points59 points ago

I totally agree here, way too sensitive to a misunderstood issue. Fried chicken, biscuits, collard greens etc. aren't black food, they are southern food. My Dad was from South Carolina and loved all this stuff, as do I, and we are white as snow.

[–]I_AM_5150 35 points36 points ago

one word, "grits".

[–]AK40Sarah 188 points189 points ago

IT'S SO DELICIOUS TOO, GIVE ME MORE COLLARD GREENS BITCH!

[–]Akiba89 68 points69 points ago

Ill pass on the collards if you give me more corn bread

[–]I_Ate_Your_Cookie 46 points47 points ago

Cornbread is delicious!

[–]superjentendo 20 points21 points ago

cornbread...ain't nothin' wrong with dat.

[–]Hawkleer 5 points6 points ago

Until a crumb goes down the wrong pipe because its so crumbly and then you cough for like an hour. Always worth it.

[–]wouldfapagain 6 points7 points ago

Cornbread! Ain't nuttin wrong wit dat!

[–]SweetNeo85 102 points103 points ago

I never understood the whole "blacks like fried chicken and watermelon" meme. It's like, doesn't everyone? Fried chicken and watermelon is fucking delicious. Grape soda on the other hand...

[–]brunnels 85 points86 points ago

I dont know what grape soda is, but purple drink on the other is some good shit.

[–]Liquicity 45 points46 points ago

purple drank

FTFY

[–]Hernan-Crespo 2 points3 points ago

Give me some of dat purple.

[–]waaaghbosss 7 points8 points ago

The cliche comes from the thought that poor blacks stole chickens and watermellons. Easy to grab and run.

[–]SweetNeo85 85 points86 points ago

I guess whoever said that never tried to carry a watermelon.

[–]FartJournal 34 points35 points ago

I guess whomever said that never tried to grab a chicken.

[–]veriix 17 points18 points ago

I guess whomever said that never tried to grab a black person.

[–]Travesura 7 points8 points ago

By the toe.

[–]rusty73581 8 points9 points ago

If you DONT like fried chicken and watermelon theres something wrong with you.

Next not-really-confessing-confession-bear: "Im white, but I love fried chicken and watermelon"

Enter hordes of angry redditors: "wtf? Shutup faget. So does everyone."

Racism disproved. Internet ftw.

God I need sleep.

[–]zyzzogeton 11 points12 points ago

Fried Chicken is delicious.

[–]somedaypilot 45 points46 points ago

Mmm Cracker Barrel. Next best thing to Grandma cooking it herself.

[–]willyboxc 76 points77 points ago

Judging by all these white people in here Cracker Barrel is the most appropriately named restaurant ever!!

[–]tnerbusas 0 points1 point ago

Cracker Barrel is to the South as Red Lobster is to New England.

[–]luckytree 6 points7 points ago

So true. People are so ridiculous.

I'M WHITE AND I LOVE CORNBREAD. MY BLACK FRIENDS LOVE FRIED CHICKEN. WE LOVE GREENS. WE EAT ALL OF THIS SHIT TOGETHER, AND WE DON'T GIVE A SHIT. THEN WE SPLIT OPEN A WATERMELON, AND DON'T GIVE TWO SHITS ABOUT OUR SKIN COLOR AND DIG IN.

[–]CountMalachi 5 points6 points ago

Also, these were his favorite foods.

[–]kevin825 1 point2 points ago

We do. Fried chicken is awesome.

[–]Lildrummerman 99 points100 points ago

As a man of color all I can think about is how delicious that meal sounds.

edit: Cornbread. Ain't nothing wrong with that.

[–]mistiry 19 points20 points ago

Sadly, there STILL is no sex in the champagne room.

[–]cheffyp1 9 points10 points ago

None.

[–]smmfdyb 10 points11 points ago

Oh, there's Champagne in the Champagne room, but you don't want Champagne; you want sex.

[–]boylejc2 2 points3 points ago

"If a girl has a pierced tongue, she'll probably suck your dick. If a guy has a pierced tongue, he'll probably suck your dick." - Such sagely advice.

And someone steps on your foot, LET IT SLIDE.

Why spend the next twenty years in jail

'Cause someone smudged your Puma?

[–]weaverster 110 points111 points ago

People are pretty Damn sensitive, we had the same southern style dinner at our dining hall for MLK day when I dormed. Shit was delicious.

[–]evilted 133 points134 points ago

People are pretty Damn sensitive..

Who you callin' "people"?!?!?

[–]Iamsqueegee 163 points164 points ago

It's cool man, it's cool. One of my best friends is people.

[–]SpruceHalo 19 points20 points ago

Damn people, taking our jobs.

[–]DownbeatDinosaur 47 points48 points ago

I'm not racist, but honestly, people are inferior.

[–]CaptainExplaino 30 points31 points ago

Fine. I'll be the one to say it. People suck.

[–]iamjakt 31 points32 points ago

But people really excel at professional sports. You have to give them that.

[–]Xenc 24 points25 points ago

You have to give them that or they'll kill you.

[–]HerroKitty_ 13 points14 points ago

Hey guys come on, most people are good and fine people, it's just a vocal minority of people who fuck it all up.

[–]Wheres_Wally 6 points7 points ago

I don't know dude. From my experience people are responsible for every bad thing that has happened, like ever.

[–]evilted 24 points25 points ago

Oh, look at you! You know a people and all of a sudden you have street cred. Sheesh.

[–]mocotazo 22 points23 points ago

New Orleanian here. MLK Jr was a Southerner who enjoyed Southern food like we do. A meal like this in honor of him wouldn't be the slightest bit unusual.

It's all about context. It's doubtful a school would do this as a slight to MLK. It's different when you have a Black Jesus Last Supper pic on r/wtf and the comments are "Oh LAWD weez got KFC and watermelon and grape DRANK"

[–]TRiPgod 26 points27 points ago

In the Navy, during Black History Month, this would be the menu for the special dinner.

[–]Iamsqueegee 57 points58 points ago

Because you opened with "In the Navy" I sang your comment to that tune. It fit pretty well.

[–]Akiba89 10 points11 points ago

Im going to do this from now on. From someone in a Navy town: fuck you, you brilliant bastard

[–]ModerateBias 33 points34 points ago

This comes up every year by some ignorant twat seeing racism where there is none. Bravo for pointing it out.

These are actually MLK's favorite foods, as stated by himself and/or his wife. In fact his love of them probably contributed to the stereotype in the first place, but I can't verify that.

[–]You_Dont_Party 18 points19 points ago

This. If it were a day celebrating an italian person and you served lasagna or antipasto, it wouldn't be considered racist. Does that mean it can't be used in a demeaning or racist manner? Of course not, but it's also asinine to not realize that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was an Atlanta born southerner who probably loved him some southern style fried chicken, cornbread, and collard greens, like any good southerner (or person with good taste, IMO) would.

[–]_Hafiz 14 points15 points ago

I always associate fried chicken or just southern food with white people.

[–]FancySkunk 146 points147 points ago

I always associate fried chicken with delicious.

[–]MrLelang 53 points54 points ago

"All this time I thought I liked fried chicken because it was delicious. Turns out I am genetically predisposed!"

[–]wespyen 37 points38 points ago

Look at him. He loves it... Just like it said in the brochure.

[–]EnlightenedNarwhal 12 points13 points ago

Dave Chapelle was great.

[–]sukicat 3 points4 points ago

He IS great!

[–]SensenmanN 5 points6 points ago

I came here to ask how this was racist. At most I see it as blatant stereotyping. I'm just wondering if someone who sees it as racist could explain it to me please, I'm just looking for a discussion though, not an argument.

[–]zydrate_X 528 points529 points ago

This is a pretty basic meal in the South, regardless of race.

[–]isocline 141 points142 points ago

As I glanced over that menu, I wondered what was wrong with it. What is so racist about fried chicken and collard greens? Pretty standard fare down here.

[–]Pduke 81 points82 points ago

People that think things like this are racist, are racist

[–]ADMITTED_RACIST 45 points46 points ago

modern white guilt apologists, fucking hate them

[–]static-klingon 23 points24 points ago

people who use terms like "modern white guilt apologists", fucking hate them

[–]R_O_F_L 0 points1 point ago

I like this post... Mostly because it's being upvoted by both racists from 4chan as well as people who get the joke.

[–]RetardedSquirrel 18 points19 points ago

It was supposed to be racist? I thought it was a 'murica moment to serve that much unhealthy food and still try to make it seem healthy.

[–]isocline 18 points19 points ago

Nothing more 'murica than extolling the health benefits of macaroni and cheese.

[–]Kiriamleech 0 points1 point ago

Exactly my thought!

[–]spiffyP 18 points19 points ago

I'm from Massachusetts and we eat all those things. Except the collard greens, which we mistake one time for spinach.

[–]sje46 9 points10 points ago

Fellow new englander. I still have no idea what grits are. I assume it's like oatmeal.

[–]isocline 12 points13 points ago

Not even close. Like zydrate_x posted, it's more like cream of wheat, but I would like to add that the texture is completely different. Grits are also best cooked with salt and butter - if you get grits from someone who doesn't know how to prepare them properly, you'll never eat them again. But once you have them done right, you'll crave them.

[–]follier 3 points4 points ago

Protip - put some little chunks of mozzerella cheese in your bowl of hot grits, and stir it up to make it stringy. So... so yummy.

[–]isocline 2 points3 points ago

Man, cheese grits are heaven in your mouth. Slice up some of that red hoop cheese, mix it up with some hot grits....gaaaaahhhh.

[–]zydrate_X 4 points5 points ago

Not like oatmeal at all. Its more like a savory version of cream of wheat.

[–]hotre_editor 4 points5 points ago

Grits = girls raised in the South.

[–]pcc987 30 points31 points ago

He was a Southern man that enjoyed Southern Food. From articles that I've read, collard* greens and fried chicken were among his favorites. I think I'd be upset that they left out black eyed peas and pecan pie, however.

[–]synergies 24 points25 points ago

*Collard greens. Collared greens would be greens wearing a collar.

[–]SirLoinOfCow 18 points19 points ago

That's not right because you don't call them collard people.

[–]agemma 2 points3 points ago

I am Collar Blind

[–]rasputine 4 points5 points ago

I wonder if these people think that eating Chinese food on the Lunar New Year is racist.

[–]SJD04 125 points126 points ago

Isn't this standard southern USA food?

[–]ratajewie 48 points49 points ago

Yes. And it's delicious. It's not racist if it's delicious.

[–]Texas_ 12 points13 points ago

Yes.

[–]notstarboard 302 points303 points ago

What despicable human being made you go to school today?

[–]zidanetribal 288 points289 points ago

A white man.

[–]dhockey63 33 points34 points ago

Too vague, more description please

[–]IAmTheQ 180 points181 points ago

"The Man"

[–]burnredatdawn 38 points39 points ago

A white cis straight male?

[–]1-900-USA-NAILS 31 points32 points ago

[–]burnredatdawn 6 points7 points ago

As a white cis male I resemble this remark.

[–]dbarts21 7 points8 points ago

A white cis quadriplegic male

[–]burnredatdawn 3 points4 points ago

THAT OLD CHAUVINIST PRIVILEGED MALE! HOW DARE HE MAKE PEOPLE LEARN?!??!?!

[–]phedre 28 points29 points ago

It's a fancy private boarding school. I assume they have all their meals at the school cafeteria.

[–]doggiedoter 16 points17 points ago

That explains why they have a big flatscreen announcing their lunch menu then...

[–]Red-Jaguars 409 points410 points ago

All racism aside, that is a pretty sweet school lunch. I didn't get anything close to that when I was in school.

[–]ygaddy 256 points257 points ago

OP goes to a prestigious day / boarding school where the tuition and fees run up to $50,000 a year.

It damn well should be a good lunch.

What my school used my tuition for

[–]ashabanapal 24 points25 points ago

I will never speak ill of Canada again.

[–]Reddit_Standards 13 points14 points ago

Haha that's just Toronto. They're a little strange. The rest of Canada has been having public orgies for years.

[–]trappedmouse 105 points106 points ago

For tuition like that, you could go to an elite university. I never understood the point of fancy high school. You can get into a good college from public schooling.

[–]promethius_rising 206 points207 points ago

It isn't about the school, it's about the shoulders you rub against.

[–]DR_McBUTTFUCK 84 points85 points ago

Damn straight. Its pretty hard to not be fortunate if your son is friends with a senator's son.

[–]rustyshaklefurrd 91 points92 points ago

It ain't me, it ain't me. I ain't no fortunate one

[–]LewisKolb 59 points60 points ago

Some folks are just born, silver spoon in hand, ready to eat some collard greens.

[–]makeskidskill 11 points12 points ago

I totally thought DR_McBUTTFUCK was paraphrasing Creedence...

[–]CreativelyBland 4 points5 points ago

I'm friends with a senator's daughter, and it has gotten me nowhere.

[–]TheCrispyNinka 20 points21 points ago

You should get her pregnant.

[–]engjosh88 44 points45 points ago

As true as that may be, it's not entirely accurate. Although you do rub shoulders, their education system is much better than most public schools for a few reasons:

  • Very low student-to-teacher ratios
  • Much higher qualified teachers
  • A lot more homework (I have friends who went to a private school that worked harder there than I currently do in my aerospace engineering bachelor's)
  • They teach you real life lessons and don't have a strict curriculum to follow
  • They ensure each student is involved in some sort of club or sport that they enjoy

...there's probably more to that list. The biggest difference is that they don't have to just teach you that standard crap that prepares you for nothing. You get one-on-one attention from very high qualified teachers that give a shit about you actually succeeding in life. It's a steep price to pay, but I can completely understand why you would if its within your means.

EDIT: I went to a public school and absolutely loved it. I had great teachers. On AVERAGE, you're more likely to get a better education at a private school, just like you're more likely to get a better education at Harvard than you are at Carleton (that's my university in Ottawa, Canada). It doesn't mean that I won't encounter great professors.

[–]SeaBones 23 points24 points ago

As a person who went to a free public school with an IB program in a shitty area of town, it is possible to have a public school that meets all these criteria and more.

[–]_L0g1k_ 19 points20 points ago

Possible but not probable.

[–]rusty73581 3 points4 points ago

Also: most private schools place a LARGE emphasis on the ability to write effectively, a skill that is largely disappearing. In a world where everyone blogs, facebooks and tweets, fewer and fewer american students are being taught how to put their thoughts into a cogent format.

Professionals all understand how valuable writing is but usually due to inadequate teacher-student ratios, the average student gets little instruction on how to write well.

I used to make a couple hundred bucks a month writing other peoples essays in college. Some of it was because they were lazy, some of it was because I could write a high scoring 2-4 page essay on almost anything in a few hours. I thank my private school education for that.

[–]Rommel79 13 points14 points ago

And to stay away from the poor people.

[–]jutct 14 points15 points ago

My friend's younger brother went to an expensive highschool with lots of famous people's kids, including Donald Trump's daughter. This is mainly the same reason people go to Yale and Harvard. The education is good, but the contacts are priceless.

[–]kovu159 0 points1 point ago

I have some friends who went to La Rosey, $213k/yr, but god damn the connections they have now are insane.

[–]Vanabrus 20 points21 points ago

I honestly just find it depressing that that amount is higher than the average American median income.

Think about it for a second; someones full time job would only pay for a year of schooling.

At the high school level.

I just find that fucked up.

[–]pdizzz 4 points5 points ago

As a student who went to this school, a large portion of the students are on financial aid in some way or the other. Plenty of my friends went for free. If you didn't get money from the school they made sure you got it from somewhere else (they allow for a lot of outside scholarship money as well). People who couldn't afford the books got free books from the financial aid library. You have to realize most of the people who paid full tuition at the school were not from the local area, as the school is like 70% boarding students. Most of those boarding students are from Korea and China, and most of them had no problem paying the exorbitant tuition fees.

TL;DR yes it's expensive, but if you're a good student they'll pay your tuition.

[–]kyle_the_jew 6 points7 points ago

I love the part that says "24% students of color" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loomis_Chaffee#Overview

[–]Enpoli 2 points3 points ago

The PC term for brown people changes all the time. Right now it might be what some social studies guru told them is the "most correct term."

[–]MagnumSwaggins 13 points14 points ago

All racism aside

What's so racist about a Southern meal?

[–]americanslang59 12 points13 points ago

It's not racism. It's soul food, which is popular amongst blacks. Put it this way: Do you think places serving Mexican food on Cinco De Mayo is racist?

[–]Binsky89 20 points21 points ago

What racism?

[–]LifterPuller[!] 18 points19 points ago

No kidding, way better then let's see, soggy chicken nuggets, nasty canned mixed veggies, and Cherry-cha-cha-cha.

[–]daveoodoes 5 points6 points ago

Can't forget the chip-your-tooth cheeseburgers! I'd have flip a girls tit 270 degrees for this lunch menu!

[–]donutsrus 9 points10 points ago

How dare you sully the good name of cafeteria chicken nuggets.

[–]Iggapoo 15 points16 points ago

TIL it's racist to serve southern food (where MLK was from) on MLK day.

[–]DasWeasel 6 points7 points ago

Its not racism its a traditional southern meal.

[–]aeriat 63 points64 points ago

Well, to be fair, he was from Atlanta. And we do tend to eat quite a bit of southern food in the south.

[–]unclepickle1 147 points148 points ago

Why is associating black people with fried chicken racist? It's fucking delicious.

If we associated them with gruel or something, then I'd understand.

[–]IAmTheQ 43 points44 points ago

He's from the south. Why is associating southern people with fried chicken racist? It's fucking delicious.

[–]daveoodoes 24 points25 points ago

Well, southern isn't really a race. But yes, fried chicken is fucking delicious.

Source: This white guy.

[–]Ixidar 10 points11 points ago

This must not be a public school in a inner city. A giant flat screen tv?psh no menu at my school, what you had last Monday you will have every Monday all your long. TYson's spicy chicken sandwich on Thursday was the shit tho!

[–]lampbowlspoon 4 points5 points ago

The paper underneath the tv says Loomis Chaffee which is an insanely expensive boarding school in Connecticut.

[–]JCShroyer 6 points7 points ago

Hello Childrens!

/Chef

[–]Sigogglin 24 points25 points ago

It's not racist at all. Everyone eats that stuff in the South. I didn't even know that fried chicken was "racist" until I started spending time on the internet a year ago. it's more likely exactly what MLK would have eaten. Also, that stuff is delicious, if cooked by someone who know's what they're doing.

[–]indoordinosaur 4 points5 points ago

I agree, this isn't racist at all. MLK was from the South and this is traditional southern food. Its not racist when you serve Chinese food on Chinese New Year. Its not racist when you eat corned beef and cabbage on St. Patrick's Day. Its not racist when you drink Tequila on Cinco de Mayo. People are ridiculous sometimes.

[–]Jairus 20 points21 points ago

Martin Luther King, Jr. was from Atlanta.

That menu represents about 80% of the meals eaten in Georgia, by black people AND white people.

Source: I am a white person from Georgia, and I've eaten this most of my life.

[–]indoordinosaur 4 points5 points ago

Even if this was just black people food it still wouldn't be racist the same way drinking Tequila on Cinco de Mayo isn't racist.

[–]Focuses_On_Minutiae 23 points24 points ago

TIL Corn Bread doesn't have any health benefits.

[–]Muter 3 points4 points ago

What concerns me more is the Mac and Cheese and Fried Chicken are being presented with "health benefits".

[–]reddithatesmee 66 points67 points ago

No watermelon?

[–]Excentinel 12 points13 points ago

That was my first thought too. I hope they have grape in the soda machines...

[–]scotchirish 14 points15 points ago

and no purple drank.

[–]pomegranati 22 points23 points ago

Why did you have to go to school?

[–]joshemory 17 points18 points ago

He goes to a school where the majority of kids a boarding students. He might not have had class, but they still gotta eat.

[–]DrCapitalism 32 points33 points ago

Sorry, but I'm not seeing the implied racism here.

[–]userjoe9066 5 points6 points ago

That's because it's not racist in the slightest.

[–]dhockey63 35 points36 points ago

Why racism? Im white and like all those. Damn, people here in America still have such a knee-jerk reaction to "racism"

[–]Yetifunk223 7 points8 points ago

Its been too long since Ive had collard greens...

[–]dontmutemeplz 12 points13 points ago

you have school on MLK day?

[–]KYLE-BROFLOSKI 5 points6 points ago

The American flags are a nice touch.

[–]theaceplaya 7 points8 points ago

All this time, I thought I was eating fried chicken because it's delicious. Turns out I'm pre-genetically disposed to like chicken!

[–]MainManBlackDynamite 7 points8 points ago

Right when you walked into that there door, everybody knew you was havin the chicken.

[–]Anal_Fister_Of_Men 21 points22 points ago

What's the big fucking deal?

[–]WiWiWiWiWiWi 3 points4 points ago

Overly sensitive white people.

[–]jenlen 4 points5 points ago

I've seen this brought up before on MLK Day... it might surprise those who think this menu is somehow racist to learn what King's favorite food was...

Fried Chicken.

[–]Offtheheazy 4 points5 points ago

Hah you have school on MLK day... :P

[–]xfrankieBWOY 9 points10 points ago

This is at a Private School in Windsor, CT known as Loomis Chaffee... (look under the tv)

[–]MJ23157 9 points10 points ago

Guys its 2013! Can we call them "African-American Greens" already?

[–]alessikidd 3 points4 points ago

That looks fucking delicious.

[–]sharked 3 points4 points ago

not the healthiest of meals

[–]NasalSnack 4 points5 points ago

Quick question. Why the fuck are you at school on MLK day?

[–]Zyrv 3 points4 points ago

You're racist if you don't like that food, who doesn't like fried chicken and cornbread? Honestly...lol

I have never understood why fried chicken and black people is such a hush hush thing...i think OP finding this to be a joke makes him seem more of a racist, imo. Fried chicken and other southern cuisine is part of the African-American culture...it's your problem if you immediately think of slavery when you see the two together.

My high school celebrated Black History Month by putting up trivia questions, which, if answered correctly, put you in a drawing for a gift card to a restaurant.

For other prize drawings, they were often to places like Chili's, TGI Fridays, Red Robin, etc. However, someone had the bright idea to make this month's restaurant of choice...the Cotton Patch.

people keep saying thats racist. it isnt racist at all. These foods are a part of black culture, its like saying that eating polish food on casimir pulaski day is racist. or eating chinese food on the chinese new year is racist. its the furthest from being racist, its really like saying hey lets celebrate black people by having foods that they made popular

It's only racist when you point it out and say "Look! That's racist!" Congratulations, you racist person.

[–]QuikImpulse 2 points3 points ago

Not racist - I read fried chicken was actually his favorite food.

Raised in the South, and this looks like a typical menu to me.

This isn't really a black specific food. It's Southern. Has more to do with the culture of the area rather than race.

what? no watermelon? ಠ_ಠ

[–]bicyclemom 2 points3 points ago

Terrible.

Next thing you know, St. Patrick's Day menus will feature corned beef, cabbage, potatoes, and beer.

Well, that image may be, but the submission really isn't.

I think the fact that you guys think this is racism is because you're racist. It took me a good minute until I decided to check the comments for why this was funny.
