And then there's all the little kids who are better than you. Those are the worst.

[–]Zachcorp 277 points278 points ago

Little bastards are shredding moguls while I eat it on the straightaways.

[–]remierk 176 points177 points ago

To be fair they have a lower center of gravity.

[–]SandSlinky 125 points126 points ago

Gonna use that excuse from now on.

[–]AiryChampion 43 points44 points ago

I like to try to reclaim some of my self esteem by reminding myself they can't drive.

[–]xcolinx 8 points9 points ago

But if they could, they would still be better than you.

[–]makesureimjewish 49 points50 points ago

you just described my yesterday.. damn kids and their skills..

[–]mattjeast 71 points72 points ago

It's their lack of understanding that they could die if they fall just the right way or go WAY too fast down a hill that could launch them off the side of a mountain. I had never ski'd or snowboarded before in my life until I was 20. I understood the possibility of me seriously injuring myself all too well at that point.

[–]CryHav0c 70 points71 points ago

Eh. It's also the fact that they weigh 2/5ths what you do (est.) and therefore if they bail, it's not going to hurt them nearly as bad, less momentum and large moving body parts to get smashed. Remember when you were a kid and could run and tumble, fall off shit, and not even feel pain? Yeah. That's awesome.

[–]corcyra 37 points38 points ago

And their bones don't break as easily, and even if they do break, they heal about 5X as fast.

[–]ByJiminy 105 points106 points ago

Goddamn little Wolverines.

TIL Kids are Super Heros

[–]Fresh_Shart 91 points92 points ago

Last time I went skiing a saw a three foot tall little girl skiing down a black diamond. I was questioning that parenting. Then I fell on a blue square and needed medical attention.

[–]jonesrr 20 points21 points ago

US black diamond or Andes/Alps Blacks?

Last time I was on a black in the Alps it was like a 60 degree slope (quite literally). They also have straight up untended blacks in a lot of places where they won't rescue you for several hours if you get hurt because they cannot get to you.

[–]SwimUA 24 points25 points ago

This US black would be a blue square in the Andes.

[–]JamesLiptonIcedTea 12 points13 points ago

Ignorance is death bliss. Sorry, I meant ignorance is bliss.

And death.

[–]makesureimjewish 13 points14 points ago

yep. i just started and i'm 24. i'm VERY aware that one wrong move and i could die.

i don't even understand how the lift can be so easy to fall out of. no seatbelts. just that bar deal that you decide to put down.

don't get me wrong, anyone with a lick of sense won't fall out. it's not complicated. but those jerk kids (not all kids, i'm talking specifically about the annoying kids who call down from the lift "HEY YOU IN THE WHITE! YOU'RE HOT!".. etc etc).

i don't understand how there aren't more injuries at slopes

[–]teamintleaves[!] 41 points42 points ago

Every time I go ice skating I think I'm doing pretty well and then this goddamned seven year old shoots in front of me and does all these fancy turns and I fall down on my butt and cry

[–]ForumWarrior 15 points16 points ago

I think being smaller gives them a superior weight to power ratio and less chance of sustaining an injury when they screw up.

[–]Callmeballs 105 points106 points ago

Was waiting for my friends to get off the lift to the Terrain Park when this ~6 year old kid comes up, binds in, grinds a 15 ft rail, hits a jump and does a fucking barrel roll. I contemplated leaving in shame or asking for his autograph for when he's famous.

[–]specularr 42 points43 points ago

And he was just warming up.

[–]Jimrussle 83 points84 points ago

That wasn't even his final form.

[–]mortalgods 23 points24 points ago

Yes! Those little bastards just bomb the steepest runs like no big deal cause they weigh about 50 pounds, meanwhile I'm trying not to hit mach 1 on the same slope!

[–]AK40Sarah 5 points6 points ago

Thank you for that amusing visual. XD

[–]CantSeeShit 95 points96 points ago

You forgot the beginer trains. The massive trains of 20 kids all beginers skiing down the mountain in a snake formation.

[–]EricTheWeirdo 30 points31 points ago

One day I'm just gonna blast straight through them.

[–]EkriirkE 14 points15 points ago

More like red-rover style, inviting you to just come on over!

How much would 10 moneys get me.

[–]Hellozan11 65 points66 points ago

Well I think that would give you about 4 alcohol.

[–]JonBanes 3 points4 points ago

at a ski resort, that would get you 1 alcohol.

[–]CowFu 8 points9 points ago

Likely a double shot of the black label and 1 money left over to tip.

[–]yabo9797 7 points8 points ago

Why is the blue label not in front?

[–]sixth_in_line 22 points23 points ago

[–]CopOnTheRun 5 points6 points ago

So green circle then?

[–]MLBM100 10 points11 points ago

I have skied for about 2 hours of my life. We spent 4 days on the mountain. I only remember the 2 hours that I skied.

[–]mainsworth 14 points15 points ago

My first time I was skill level Green for half a day and skill level Lodge for the rest of the trip.

[–]two 9 points10 points ago

As long as you're not one of the snowboarders that just sits in the middle of the trail as if it were some sort of goddamn hangout.

[–]phedre 1 point2 points ago

That's my plan for any skiing occasion.

[–]darkestsoul 65 points66 points ago

I hate it when people purposely crop out the watermarks and don't give the credit. Kudos to you good sir.

I'm not sure if OP is an asshole, or just visits douchey sites. Sort of like when you see someone with a horrible park job. Are they the asshole or was there another asshole who made them park like that and is now gone, leaving them to look like a jerk.

[–]comment_filibuster 44 points45 points ago

There was no watermark to be cropped on the original image.

[–]SebbenandSebben 21 points22 points ago

[–][deleted] 112 points113 points ago

I see no reference to the out of control snow plowers who are doing their best to dislocate their hips and get their plow angle beyond 90 degrees whilst turning back and forth randomly and stabbing at the snow in front of them with their poles in a futile attempt to stop. I know there has been at least one...because it was me.

[–]ATownStomp 21 points22 points ago

Hey! That was me this year switching from snowboarding to skiing for the first time!

Everyone's advice to me "Just make wider turns". No. Every time I make wide turns somebody runs into me. Every fucking time.

There's just no good way to stop on skis relative to snowboarding.

[–]ChaoticV 41 points42 points ago

You can stop skis fairly easily by sliding sideways and leaning into the slope of the mountain. Beginner skiers don't really want to go into any kind of sideways slide because they feel like they are loosing control, but really it gives you a greater ability to make sudden turns or stops. We have tested stopping time between skiers and boarders among my friends and a skier can almost always pull up just as fast or faster then a boarder.

Snowplowing is the worst way to ski and IMO should not be taught to anyone.

[–]superAL1394 9 points10 points ago

Snow plowing has its place in teaching people to be comfortable with the sliding/falling sensation of going down the hill. With parallel skis it is very easy to get going extremely fast.

[–]ChaoticV 14 points15 points ago

I view snowplowing as a crutch for people to get down the mountain safely when they rarely go skiing. When learning to ski I had to break the habit I learned in my first lesson of wanting to snowplow all the time before I could actually improve as a skier. The feel of snowplowing and proper parallel skiing are very different and you cannot learn to ski well if you keep wanting to revert to a snowplow.

[–]superAL1394 14 points15 points ago

Its the falling sensation that bothers a lot of people and makes them revert to the snowplow. The other reason why it is taught is it is a bit of a 'dead mans switch'. A snow plow is an easy position to get into. Stopping when parallel is a very active action, especially for a new skier.

That said if you're in a snowplow on anything other than a green that person is wrong and should feel bad. That much I will not contest.

[–]Sentreen 12 points13 points ago

ski uphill is what I always learned, as in, keep on turning, and eventually you will stop.

[–][deleted] 20 points21 points ago

Or just go around in a circle and go downhill for a bit again.

[–]Rainboq 10 points11 points ago

Or just end up going down backwards, I was on a ski patrol, and there was this one kid, who ended up skiing down a black diamond backwards. It wasn't pretty, poor kid had to get airlifted once we got him down.

[–]brendan87na 615 points616 points ago

the snowboarder going sideways is sooooo true...

[–]s1295 439 points440 points ago

Yeah, been there … It was a long, shameful descent, but at least I didn’t end up being the “needs medical attention” kid.

[–]Yserbius 177 points178 points ago

I was the "medical attention" kid and the "slide down with my skies on my butt" kid. The second is far more embarrassing.

I hit the expert hill on my first day because I was confident that it is just like longboarding (I was an avid longboarder). Little did I know, there are a lot of different aspects of snowboarding, I then became the "needs medical attention kid."

[–]astrogaijin 9 points10 points ago

Same, I was following my dad and he decided to go down a double black. Much safer to kill your ankle muscles and just slide right on down.

[–]HappyChicken 4 points5 points ago

I did. We went skiing when I was 13, for a week over spring break. First trip down the slope, I lost control, landed on my ass, and managed to skid hip-first into a fucking boulder. Sat there for what seemed like an eternity screaming at passersby. Nobody noticed me until my mom and a few of her friends came through. Ended up on crutches with a cracked pelvis.

Two days later, my little sister, age 9, nailed a Black Diamond while I sat in the condo alone reading books and hobbling around on crutches. Then for the next 6 weeks, I was that kid in middle school who's on crutches but has no visible injury - not like they can put a cast on a broken pelvis.

TLDR: Nearly pulled a Kennedy, no longer interested in skiing.

[–]leash1991 115 points116 points ago

I was once that snowboarder... I apologize

EDIT: In my defense I was with the douchebag that kept saying "this black diamond is real a blue square everywhere else", so i thought I could do it

[–]ZondaRFanForLife 63 points64 points ago

As a fellow snowboarder: they really need to standardize the diamonds. On one I felt as though I was on a green, on another I felt as I was trying to board down K2.

[–]sunsprout 31 points32 points ago

I agree, but I think there is also a difficulty in rating them due to the incredible number of variables in determining what each person will find "difficult".

[–]thehooptie 3 points4 points ago

single black diamond is steep with or without moguls. double black is ungroomed steep so typically with moguls. blues are less steep with or without moguls aka being groomed.

[–]danceandpretend 21 points22 points ago

We've all been that guy. I apologize on our behalf.

[–]Chronic_Kittens 14 points15 points ago

To be fair, I've been this guy before because my friends who snowboard 10 times more frequently than me occasionally drag me on runs that are way out of my skill level.

[–]T-Rebs 10 points11 points ago

"Douchebag complaining that this would be a blue square in a different region" and "douchebag deliberately running into you so you fall, then other skiers forcefully stop and spray snow on you, since you are in the way."
"Forcefully spray snow on you"

[–]SuperBeastJ 4 points5 points ago

Doesn't have to be a first timer though, and applies to each trail level.

[–]danrennt98 16 points17 points ago

And also the person claiming it would be a blue out west.

[–]zeshtorm 69 points70 points ago

As a guy from out west, it's really true. I did a double black diamond on the east coast last year, it was literally like a blue on Whistler.

[–]eat_your_greens 115 points116 points ago

Of course it's true, that's how the rankings are supposed to work. It isn't an absolute difficulty level, it's a relative ranking compared to the other runs on the mountain.

[–]zeshtorm 51 points52 points ago

That... makes sense, I guess.

[–]danrennt98 79 points80 points ago

Goddamn hipsters.

[–]zeshtorm 23 points24 points ago

I like to think of it as the opposite. There's such good spring skiing in Whistler, I like to think we "go skiing, after it was cool".

[–]mulletarian 13 points14 points ago

Yeah man, there's blacks everywhere in the western mountains.

[–]Yamez 9 points10 points ago

The "elderly person who skies way better than you" is on every skill level. My dad has a relative who's well over 80 and skies double-black in Colorado every year. He goes with a whole group of octogenarians, including one guy who fought with the Polish partisans during WWII. My dad loves it as they make him feel young again.

Few years ago dad took kid on leash through triple diamond terrain park. They went right across landing of a huge kicker. The little girl was literally ripped from her boots. She was air lifted with broken back and kneck. Paralyzed from waist down. Father tried suing slope for having a terrain park. Case was thrown out. Father now gets to raise a paralyzed daughter because he felt the rules of the hill werent important.

[–]Lock9 12 points13 points ago

This comment made me very sad =(

[–]bored_at_work_89 147 points148 points ago

Forgot to add that there is at least a handful of snowboards just sitting in the middle of every run.

[–]KosherDill 26 points27 points ago

In one long line across the center of the trail, leaving little space on either side for others passing by.

[–]DakotaN2895 8 points9 points ago

If people I know stop and sit down in the middle of the trail, I make a point of hockey-stopping above them and spraying them with snow. They only make the mistake a couple times.

[–]Sleep45 19 points20 points ago

If I am taking a seat to catch breath or check phone or whatever I just go the the very edge of the trail.

[–]drink_the_kool_aid 10 points11 points ago

Yea that's the proper etiquette. People who sit in the middle though are jerks.

[–]Krispyz 21 points22 points ago

At least.

[–]two 37 points38 points ago

Snowboarding is awesome, but snowboarders really give snowboarding a bad name.

[–]Infinite1297 7 points8 points ago

As a snowboarder, even I don't get it. You wanna sit? There's a lodge. You eat shit? Get back up unless you're broken. In that case moan loudly till ski patrol comes.

[–]iveheardthat1b4 13 points14 points ago

Or even just sit on the edge of the trail. Why sit right in the middle of everything? I get that you need to take a break but just because you're not looking up mountain doesn't mean people aren't coming at you.

Theres also the skier equivalent, which is the family standing in the middle of the run deciding on which trail to go to next/whether or not to go to the lodge halfway through their current run. I don't get the skier/snowboarder division. When I finish a day at the mountain I hate everyone

[–]jasonracey 5 points6 points ago

Yes!!! No idea why this wasn't on any of the signs..

[–]RossLH 12 points13 points ago

Nothing annoys me more than the groups of people (not necessarily just snowboarders, but more often than not...) who decide they're going to sit dead center in the middle of a black diamond. When I see that, I build up a little speed, head straight for them, and coat as many of them in snow as possible. A lot of times, people who see me do that are amused and will follow suit. The snowboarders take the hint pretty quick when that happens.

[–]DoctorPotatoe 5 points6 points ago

And where's the asians clearing an entire mountain to take a picture?

[–]delicious_dioxin 20 points21 points ago

Incredibly accurate

[–]claytonneves 56 points57 points ago

I used to skii a good amount on blues and shit. It was really fun. Someone told me the diamonds just like a blue. I hit a tree and broke 3 ribs and have been too scared to ride again.

[–]Godot_12 25 points26 points ago

I've skied quite a few diamonds, but usually the blues are way more fun. I usually stick to those. Sorry you got hurt. I hope you get back on the slopes, skiing is so fun.

[–]TehBiblae 18 points19 points ago

You forgot the 10 year olds who can't snowboard downhill for shit but will embarrass you in the terrain park

[–]hungerjohnson 16 points17 points ago

I've been the one that goes down on his butt the whole way. My friend said i should go to the terrain park with him, on my first day :(

[–]ghettolicious 45 points46 points ago

Wow this makes me sad. Spent a whole day snowboarding, and I still can't go ten seconds without eating shit.. On the beginner slope.

[–]Bogwart 13 points14 points ago

In Switzerland, you get all the native kids, who are just doing triple rolling back-uber-flips.

[–]YoureMyBoyBloo 138 points139 points ago

Someone is going to need to explain this for the black redditors...

[–]Provid3nce 97 points98 points ago

Amongst the "activities for white people" category, skiing is only trumped by Polo.

[–]YoureMyBoyBloo 21 points22 points ago

I don't know, I would say historically "politics" would also be very high on the list.

[–]fawker 12 points13 points ago

[–]rottenbanana1 14 points15 points ago

Spent a week skiing in Aspen, my friends and I counted a total of 6 black people the entire trip.

[–]ambalamps11 26 points27 points ago

Saw a ton of African American skiers this weekend. They were having a blast. And they were hilarious to watch too. Plenty of kids run over, falling off of chair lifts, etc.

[–]YoureMyBoyBloo 21 points22 points ago

Big Bear doesn't count.

[–]bowtieninja 11 points12 points ago

Butt-boarder here. I very slowly dragged my butt down the expert slope on my first day. I couldn't go more than 4 feet before falling down. I figured that I would just learn how to snowboard on my way down the hill. Oh, how stupid I was.

[–]pbh4vr 6 points7 points ago

Pay for a private lesson of an hour or two so that you can learn the basics. After that a few days of practice you'll no longer be falling down all the time and you'll be able to enjoy it. I learnt when I was 24 and that's how I did it and it worked great.

[–]pjacques 9 points10 points ago

As a snowboard instructor, I approve this message!

[–]domjeff 23 points24 points ago

So what's red?

[–]eat_your_greens 31 points32 points ago

We don't have red in North America.

[–]domjeff 12 points13 points ago

Ah ok! So does black = red or you just have a steep (Hahaaa) learning curve?

[–]superAL1394 35 points36 points ago

Bunny slope = large open expanse, usually only served by a tow rope, very easy (your green)

Green = Beginner (your blue)

Blue = Intermediate (your red)

Black = Difficult

Double black = Expert

Triple black = dat shit cray. This label varies across resorts. Some have them marked double black with "Experts only" written on the sign and warnings all over the place. Other resorts have an entirely different symbol.

Orange highlight = Terrain park.

Finally, many resorts will mark special areas in various ways. Killington Vermont, for example, has trails rated blue through double black that are unmaintained through wooded areas. These are marked by a sign on the trail as you'd expect with another sign noting it is an unmaintained trail and that you ski it at your own risk (this is not the same as unpatrolled!). Out west, there are usually Back Bowls that are marked in a similar fashion.

[–]mandingophil 5 points6 points ago

thanks for being that one awesome dude who types everything out for people who genuinely don't understand!

[–]Kohuded 10 points11 points ago

At out place there's this guy going down double blacks with only one leg. It's both a depressive and impressive sight.

Kinda bothers me that I'll never be as good as him without losing my leg first though.

[–]bluebeau7 54 points55 points ago

TIL Reddit is not very good at skiing/snowboarding.

[–]BewildereBeast 23 points24 points ago

Well, yeah, you have to go outside for that.

[–]The_Nard_Dog 15 points16 points ago

I've been that douche bag, just because it's true.

[–]DocPlatypus 8 points9 points ago

Meh, I dont mind theses guys because its sometimes (almost always) true. But I do mind people that think they are better because their equipement is expensive. Ive been in a cable car with an obnouxious 40ish weeaboo asshole who said Canadians didnt knew how to ski and Japanese are the best skiers in the world. He had super expensive equipement wich wasnt at all fitted for East Canadians mountains, super large skis a small thin coat.

He then proceed to go into a blue slope (read: lot of people) and he skied like an ass, going super fast, he wasnt in control at all and almost hit every guy he went next.

TLDR: Complaining about slope being overrated is O.K. only if you are good.

Yep I went into a woman once that was waiting after a jump. It was an icy diamond so I slid a good 50 feet before I was able to stop. Had to climb up to get one ski then slide down on my ass to get the other.

Tl; dr: Went into a woman.

"Went into a woman" sounds like you made the best out of a bad situation!

It was a slippery slope.

Where are the parents of the 3 year old on the expert slope?

[–]HandyCore3 5 points6 points ago

I was that awaiting medical attention guy. Sprained both my wrists. As a teenager, that was a disaster for non-skiing-related reasons.

So true. Although when I snowboard with my girlfriend (who is a beginner) I always take her down blue squares. They're generally WAY less populated than the green circles which makes it easier despite it being a "harder" trail.

you forgot the 12 year old that lives there and is 10 times better than everyone else hehe

I just choked on my grilled cheese reading this. I'm all alone. At least I would have died laughing.

Not listed: Random skier who makes massive turns that encompass the entire run.

This leaves out the skier who can't get up if she falls... Has to take the skis off then quickly falls again when standing up. Not that I know someone like this.. No.. No one indeed.

So much elitism in snow sports, it's crazy.
