I read that he did it to go against the trend that when a television show gets popular the producers always want to make the cast look better looking than they should be. He points to shows like the Big Bang Theory and says how they used to be normal nerds but then once it got popular they had more stylish haircuts, clothing, looked better..

    I believe he actually said it differently (more how people are imagining it) in the actual episode than he did in the promo. Not only was the promo cut to make it pop more (and for time), altering the delivery of the joke, but editors will oftentimes use a different take from a television show for the promo than what was actually aired (usually because they feel that whatever network that going to buy it will like it more). Source: I interned at a place that does this, they actually do a lot of it's always sunny; but if you watch enough tv, you start to notice anyway.

      That was kind of the whole point though. It was a pre-determined, intellectual decision.

      They were trying to symbolize how real life gets thrown off balance all the time and were poking fun at the way that sitcom characters somehow always seem to get better looking as time goes on (read: more makeup, better wardrobe, etc.).

      I think there were funny moments from him being fat - especially the first episode or two when it was still fresh.

        Just a question not chastising anyone. But is everyone just now jumping on "Sunny in Philly" because it's on Netflix now. I've seen many sunny quotes,references and posts these last couple of weeks. I, myself, just watched the show through the 7th season. Ive seen it before and liked it but didn't get into it cause 1 I don't have cable and 2 I didn't just want to jump in from like season 5 cause I missed out a lot like I didn't know in the early episodes that frank thought he was dee and Dennis's dad.
