After working in a tourist town and meeting many Canadians I was extremely disappointed to learn "eh" isn't like an every sentence thing.

[–]Raynebows 55 points56 points ago

I'm Canadian and even I'm a bit disappointed by that...

[–]DasGanon 17 points18 points ago

I remember watching a program years ago with my folks and I was disappointed that Canadians didn't have an awesome accent and sounded generally American.

You mean they sound like us? that's boring! (I was 8 I think)

[–]FlippenPigs 38 points39 points ago

Newfoundlanders. You can thank me later.

[–]hcsLabs 23 points24 points ago

French Newfoundlanders.

[–]K4ge 9 points10 points ago

Oh. Dear. GOD.

[–]DTBurns3D 0 points1 point ago

Well I was aboot to goo oover to de lack eh? (The accent of a Newfie) I can tell all Americans that here in Ontario we don't say eh very often. I can't speak for Newfoundlanders though.

[–]DeadbyChapter2 5 points6 points ago

Them and Cape Bretoners

[–]Kashy69 2 points3 points ago

We're just Newfie's that didn't make it back to the island, eh.

[–]brianbek 0 points1 point ago

As a Cape Bretoner I can confirm this, don't understand myself half of the time.

[–]hcsLabs 4 points5 points ago

B'ys, look at dat dere, luh!

[–]DasGanon 6 points7 points ago

Well I know that now. That and Quebecqois.

[–]Devilyn 4 points5 points ago

Québecois thank you :p

[–]DasGanon -1 points0 points ago

I thank the Québecois. When I was doing a foreign exchange, in Belgium, I felt kinda bad for using the French "You're welcome" (Oh it's nothing) so I used the Quebec one while I was there. I much prefer it.

[–]Exya -1 points0 points ago

so did you say ''de rien'' or ''you're welcome''?

[–]DasGanon -1 points0 points ago

The Quebec way is a mixture of both. It's just "Bienvenue" (Welcome)

[–]Exya -3 points-2 points ago

oh I live in Quebec and I always say de rien but I've heard bienvenue a lot too.. maybe I should start using it XD

[–]TheIrreverend 1 point2 points ago

Jeez, b'y; why yous hatin' on Newfies, wha?

[–]Rainb0wcrash99 0 points1 point ago

Lawds fuck that island i can find it on a map

[–]Raynebows 6 points7 points ago

Haha when I was around 10 or so I used to add "eh" in just to be "special"

[–]LucaOrue 5 points6 points ago

I'm Canadian and I use eh all the time, all my friends too...

[–]PackinIt 2 points3 points ago

Yeah I say eh all the time too. I don't even realize it :D

[–]Raynebows 0 points1 point ago

You're weeeiiiirrrrrrddd.

[–]supallama 2 points3 points ago

eh?

[–]krispwnsu 0 points1 point ago

That's pretty lame don't-cha-know.

[–]DasGanon 1 point2 points ago

^ Not an accent, more a commonly said phrase.

Like, I mean if I were to say "Y'all" for example. That's a phrase commonly said by southerners. In the same way that we say "Howdy" here.

However, some are a mixture of both, I mean "Fogettaboutit" or "Chowdah" It's mostly pronunciation of existing words and their actions associated with to determine location of origin.

[–]krispwnsu 0 points1 point ago

Thank you for this. I think I kind of understand what you are saying, but I am too drunk to really comprehend what you are saying. I will review this when I am sober.

[–]sawyer779 0 points1 point ago

I too, am Canadian.

[–]mysterecks 9 points10 points ago

try the Atlantic provinces like New Brunswick or the upper part of Nova Scotia your disappointment will dissipate

[–]dinolado 4 points5 points ago

Ever since Reddit, I've been super-conscious about saying and hearing folks sayin' "eh". Being in Miramichi, it's common enough, but my landlord works at two hundred "eh"s per minute.

[–]dippy77 2 points3 points ago

Another Miramichier here, definitely hear it quite a bit.

[–]mysterecks 0 points1 point ago

No shit your both from the miramichi to? small world

[–]thedumptruck49 0 points1 point ago

This is 100% true. I live in Maine and we get tourists all the time. I actually have spoken to too many people who say "eh" literally as a way of punctuating a sentence.

[–]maro2k4 0 points1 point ago

I moved from British Columbia to New Brunswick, and when I got here the culture shock and accents were overwhelming, I'm used to it now though.

[–]renegadeforlife 10 points11 points ago

As a Canadian, I actually say eh quite a bit. I sometimes use it in place of the word what. EH?

[–]Coolguyzack 0 points1 point ago

Eh in the world is that? I told you that is eh I wanted for dinner! I followed step 1, now eh?

[–]A_Canuck 1 point2 points ago

Except eh only goes at the end of sentences... for the most part.

[–]rawbamatic 6 points7 points ago

We usually only say that at the end of sentences when it can be replaced by the use of "right?"

For example: "You pissed on Steve, eh?"

[–]Reckoner87 1 point2 points ago

  • You pissed on Steve, ya?

  • You pissed on Steve, no?

  • You pissed on Steve, right?

  • You pissed on Steve, eh?

[–]FordSVT1 3 points4 points ago

We use to seek acknowledgement during conversation. You know anyone who says, "right" at the end of a sentence? It's kind of like that.

American comedians never get that, they just throw it on the end of every sentence. that ain't what we do!

[–]SmileyNimbus 0 points1 point ago

y'all make a lot of sense.

[–]FordSVT1 0 points1 point ago

Barbecue is the only thing I miss about my stay in Texas.

[–]SmileyNimbus 0 points1 point ago

It was a joke I live in Sedona, Arizona. We don't really say y'all that much.

[–]Mymajesty 2 points3 points ago

Yeah same. Though I was surprised to learn that nearly every sentence starts with "Sorry.."

[–]melikeyshootey 2 points3 points ago

Canadians saying "eh" actually derives from "eya", which means "I agree" in an Aboriginal language (I forget which one.) It was used often by Canadians back in the 19th century because Canadians often traded with the Aboriginals at trading posts.

[–]cheegrah 1 point2 points ago

I'm canadian and i only use eh as a replacement for "dont ya think" or i say it after i tell someone something they didn't know for example "that store sells milk eh"

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I say it a lot. It tends to punctuate the end of inquiries a lot, and turn imperative sentences into inquiries... I'm not even from the Maritimes or BC, born and raised in Alberta...

"That's not too bad, eh?"

"Have a good one, eh?"

TIL I am more Canadian than most of us.

[–]DTBurns3D 0 points1 point ago

I say eh in three ways eh as a salutary statement "eh Sarah" a questioning what was that "blah blah blah" "eh?" And I agree or don't you agree eh (or aya

[–]adetghjk 15 points16 points ago

[–]SweetChilliPhilly 0 points1 point ago

Just like Melbourne and her bipolar weather.

[–]mmx29 35 points36 points ago

I really doubt it that Canada gets much more snow than Russia. It's going to be pretty much the same.

[–]DaGhostQc 8 points9 points ago

I have to agree with you, we don't get as much snow as we used to (at least here in Quebec). We kinda lost our bragging right about snow, now we're lucky if we have a decent season for ski/snowboard and snowmobile.

[–]meatbatmusketeer 8 points9 points ago

Pretty much the same deal in nova scotia. I remember winters being awsome as a kid, but now we get worried there won't be any snow for christmas

[–]silent_p 3 points4 points ago

Yeah, ditto, for Northern Ontario.

[–]Mr_Mr_ 5 points6 points ago

Everybody relax. We've got all your snow in Saskatchewan.

[–]Dressedw1ngs 1 point2 points ago

Stop Hogging the snow! D:

[–]MrEgg 1 point2 points ago

Alberta is stealing a lot too :p

[–]TheCanadianSKS 0 points1 point ago

The Yukon has a fair bit right now too.

[–]canadianism 0 points1 point ago

Can confirm.

[–]canadiens_habs 4 points5 points ago

well i think like russia it depends on where in the country you are. both are very big countries and amount of snow will change

[–]jakemyers7 5 points6 points ago

the two biggest

[–]Chimcan 2 points3 points ago

It doesn't shrink in the cold.

[–]adrian5b 4 points5 points ago

it actually does

[–]ParamedicGatsby 3 points4 points ago

Toronto has like 0-1 inches of snow right now, 2 days ago we had literally no snow.

[–]FlippenPigs 2 points3 points ago

To be fair it was a freak heat wave. When it's -20 on Monday it will be back to normal weather wise.

[–]rawbamatic 6 points7 points ago

It's been like that in Northern Ontario this week. I think it was a nice -22 today. Last week we set a record high of +8.

Mother Nature is PMSing.

[–]Chimcan 2 points3 points ago

Sunday last weekend was 16 in Great-Lakes Ontario.

Plus 16 degrees mother-fucking Celsius. That's tee-shirt weather. In the middle of January.

[–]Kashy69 0 points1 point ago

Last March it was like 25+ degrees in Antigonish for a week. There were bitches walking around campus in bikini tops and shorts.

[–]DisgruntledPorcupine 0 points1 point ago

I live in Northwestern Ontario and we had -44 with the wind chill yesterday.

[–]CalCapone -1 points0 points ago

-20 Celsius I assume, which is light jacket weather in 'Murica.

[–]lefthandedsurprise 0 points1 point ago

C'mon. You know it's not. Most of Iowa haven't even got below 0ºF yet this winter.

[–]CalCapone 1 point2 points ago

You're not a true manly murican.

[–]lefthandedsurprise 0 points1 point ago

I bike to work everyday. The coldest it's been so far was 5ºF when I walked out the door. Have I redeemed myself?

[–]ryumast3r 0 points1 point ago

Utah has gotten below -22C at night... during the day it has gone as hot as -8C, for about a week it was stuck at about -20 day or night.

Good times.

[–]AC_Mentor 0 points1 point ago

And to be even more fair it's still only January. There's February, March, April, and, if mother nature doesn't like us, May. Plenty of time for big snow fall.

[–]blondeezy 0 points1 point ago

Under that down here further south-west. It's been a very mild winter so far.

[–]jojotuffasnails 0 points1 point ago

Yea? I live in Buffalo. I'll go to bed with green grass and wake up and have to shovel off my car.

[–]coolkohl64 0 points1 point ago

in southern saskatchewan last week we got 1-2 feet with -40 celsius

[–]panders2reddit 1 point2 points ago

Vancouver here, it hasn't snowed in years.

[–]GenericPenName 0 points1 point ago

The Vancouver area has had virtually none for maybe two years.

[–]butt_badg3r 1 point2 points ago

Montreal got 45cm a few weeks ago.. that was fun...

[–]MuchJokes 1 point2 points ago

Concidering the coldest place on Earth is in Russia, you're pretty correct.

Honorable mentions go to Nunavut, though.

[–]berlin85 0 points1 point ago

Cold has less to do with heavy snowfall than you might think

[–]saustin66 1 point2 points ago

I hear that. Not much snow when it's 40 below.

[–]FordSVT1 0 points1 point ago

It hardly ever actually snows in much of Antarctica. It's basically a desert.

[–]ryumast3r 0 points1 point ago

It technically is a desert. Receives less than a foot of precip/year.

[–]Dugen 1 point2 points ago

Check out Syracuse New York.

When you think "huge snow" you don't think New York, since it's so far south, but the Buffalo/Syracuse area is just past the great lakes and gets some lake-effect snow on top of their normal snowfall. Syracuse averages 115 inches of snow a year. There's no place, in Canada even way up north, that gets more than about 10% more snow than that.

[–]djkrugger -3 points-2 points ago

[–]Dressedw1ngs 0 points1 point ago

That post was literally fucking used as "Canadian" today. Nice try.

[–]FumCacial 3 points4 points ago

And its actually in Japan :S

[–]djkrugger 0 points1 point ago

Yup. My bad. Have some real russia instead please.

[–]Ju1cY_0n3 7 points8 points ago

Eh is used in context correctly, finally...

All of those "I was eh walking eh outside eh and I got eh hit eh by a snow eh ball eh" stereotypes bother me.

[–]Tissue-Walrus 0 points1 point ago

I know your feel. I hate it when non New Englanders use wicked improperly. Wicked is used similar to "really". If the word really can't be used in place of the word wicked then you're using it wrong. For example; That was wicked awesome! - correct That was wicked! - incorrect

[–]ShantiPonks 7 points8 points ago

Russian winter.

Stopped Napoleon. Stopped Hitler.

edit: jesus, okay, fine. Russian winter at least made it incredibly difficult to actually make it anywhere

[–]meter1060 -1 points0 points ago

Not really winter it was more like the millions of young men the Russians threw at him.

[–]ShantiPonks 3 points4 points ago

yeah that and the fact that it was fucking cold as balls.

[–]Rainb0wcrash99 0 points1 point ago

Ssssrsly

[–]HarryTheDirtyDog 0 points1 point ago

Didn't stop the Mongols. Something about it getting pretty cold in Mongolia...

[–]Dressedw1ngs 0 points1 point ago

Didn't stop Napoleon actually, and hitler was only stopped because he failed to arm his armies with fucking winter jackets. He was hoping to get to the rich oil fields before the winter.

Also the Napoleon thing, I will try to source the relevant article explaining it, but for now take that part with a grain of salt.

[–]HereToParty 9 points10 points ago

Different countries have different climates? LOL!

[–]doores153 2 points3 points ago

Hell same countries have different climates! It's crazy right?!

[–]shnoog 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for the latest rehash of this 'joke'.

[–]CalCapone 2 points3 points ago

Assuming you're not from Yellowknife winters in Canada aren't nearly that bad.

[–]FauxHulk 2 points3 points ago

Gets pretty cold in the praries and northern ontario too! In alberta it was -40 in november

[–]Dat-Canadian-ass 0 points1 point ago

It gets pretty nasty in AB.

[–]AndroTritium 0 points1 point ago

Seems about right.

[–]minko7 0 points1 point ago

I feel like Antarctica is the worse...

[–]FordSVT1 1 point2 points ago

Much of Antarctica hardly gets any snow. Don't believe me? :)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antarctica#Climate

[–]Alketaire 1 point2 points ago

Oddly enough, I took this picture in the middle of the city during our little heat wave up here last week.

[–]kirky1148 1 point2 points ago

not a fair comparison seeing as England was compared instead of the snowier spots such as Scotland and Northern Ireland

[–]Awfy 1 point2 points ago

A couple of years ago north-east Scotland had so much snow that many roofs collapsed in from the weight. In fact Glenfiddich released a special whiskey called Snow Phoenix when a roof on one of their warehouses collapsed exposing the barrels of whisky inside.

http://www.kosherwineuk.com/glenfiddich-snow-phoenix-p-418.html

[–]Tightbuffalo69 1 point2 points ago

Venezuela: whats snow?

[–]liveat60fps 2 points3 points ago

Australia: My eyeballs are melting...mate.

[–]supersnuffy 0 points1 point ago

England isn't half as equipped to deal with heavy snowfall in comparison.

[–]greven145 0 points1 point ago

That's not Mr. B, THIS is Mr. B!

[–]Rainb0wcrash99 0 points1 point ago

Russia

[–]Nateosis 0 points1 point ago

As a Canadian, I would confirm this but I can't see out my windows on account of all the snow

[–]canadianism 0 points1 point ago

Not gonna lie, when I saw the other post I was waiting for this fix post. Good job Canada, good job.

[–]TheMilkJug 1 point2 points ago

Come on! What is with using NYC to represent US snow?

This list has the US having 9 out of the 10 snowiest cities in the world by yearly accumulation.

I will admit some of these are hardly cities, but still there are much better major cities to represent us snow than NYC. Buffalo? Syracuse? Anchorage? Hell Flagstaff AZ gets an average 100" a year.

[–]waterfuck 1 point2 points ago

Well I don't think winter in Canada is worse than winter in Russia. After all they both have regions in the arctic circle.

[–]clarence15 0 points1 point ago

I think that's summer in Russia

[–]Confuciussaywhat 0 points1 point ago

why dont you just live in a place with no snow?

[–]Elvie90 0 points1 point ago

Don't worry that's what us Brits are thinking as well.

[–]Dat-Canadian-ass 0 points1 point ago

I actually think Russian winters can be equal if not worse than Canadian winters. That is depending on where you are though.

[–]TheYankster 1 point2 points ago

Obviously none of you have been to Alaska....

[–]witcoheibn 0 points1 point ago

Thank you.

[–]hakbor 0 points1 point ago

Norway reporing in. Heard someone was talking about snow.

[–]5abenik 0 points1 point ago

Im a russian living in the UK. Every year they freak out about snow. Every year I day those words

[–]the_sloppy_J 0 points1 point ago

Its like people forget that Alaska is apart of the U.S.

Yes. This.

[–]THORN01 0 points1 point ago

It's been cold, but no snow for me.

[–]ewqqweewqqwe 0 points1 point ago

We had a snow storm in dallas

[–]SwampyTroll 0 points1 point ago

Did you get to pee your name into the snow?

[–]ewqqweewqqwe 0 points1 point ago

If only. :( it doesn't snow in texas enough

[–]SwampyTroll 0 points1 point ago

Dammit. I feel for you. We had it thick enough in Louisiana about three years ago where I was able to pee my name in the snow. It was the best day ever.

[–]liamsdomain -1 points0 points ago

This is 100% fact. Source: I'm from Minnesota, basically the same as Canada.

[–]grimfate -3 points-2 points ago
