My first thought was, "Oh, you were flying over the Rockies or whatever and took a pic." Very cool. How long did it take you to scrape all that off?

[–]thatguy142[S] 29 points30 points ago

No scraping needed! I started the car and let it warm up for about 10 minutes. That was all it took.

[–]PirateLordBush 22 points23 points ago

That's kinda smart actually.

[–]thatguy142[S] 67 points68 points ago

Kinda.

[–]Mytacosaremine 100 points101 points ago

Mildly

[–]lepruhkon 9 points10 points ago

Keepin' 'em honest, Mytacosaremine. Making sure things stay mild here.

[–]crnulus 23 points24 points ago

This is a little humorous because in Canada just about everyone with a car does this, lol.

[–]PickyPanda 25 points26 points ago

everyone everywhere does this.

even people in Colorado, where it's illegal to do this.

[–]Pharien 4 points5 points ago

Didn't know that. What's the reason? People warming up their cars in the garage?

[–]PickyPanda 10 points11 points ago

Nah, it's an air quality issue. Started in Denver, then spread to the whole state. To it's credit Colorado has some of the cleanest air, even in the dense city areas.

[–]DiscountPhil 5 points6 points ago

It's that, and people tend to steal more cars when they're already running. Hahaha.

[–]Pharien 0 points1 point ago

Ah, both of those make pretty good sense. :P

[–]dghughes 0 points1 point ago

Not because they're on a mountain? :P

[–]PickyPanda 0 points1 point ago

good point actually, I'll ask my es professor next week

[–]DomeSteve 5 points6 points ago

Why don't people just pour some water on there?

[–]Crusty_Potato 17 points18 points ago

pour water on the windshield in -20C......? wat

[–]TheOnlyHighlander 2 points3 points ago

Your windshield will asplode.

[–]Heratiki 3 points4 points ago

And much smarter than scrapping the windshield off and cold starting the vehicle then driving it immediately. Letting a vehicle warm up approximately 3-4 minutes is always better for your car.

No worries I'll see myself out...

[–]speilberg0 12 points13 points ago

Sorry to disappoint, but idling a car to warm up / coat engine with oil is a myth these days. Time spent below normal operating temp will cause a great deal more wear and tear on the engine and produce a great deal more polution. Driving off is the best way to get to that temp efficiently, just take it easy for the first couple of mins while it warms up before racing someone at the traffic lights.

Contrast to 'warming up' (idling) where the engine can take a good 10-15 mins to warm up properly in extreme cold and you will end up doing more damage to the engine in the long run.

[–]Heratiki 3 points4 points ago

Not a disappointment. Just something I was always told as a kid. And yeah 10-15 minutes is overkill for warming up your vehicle considering it takes (even in extreme temperatures) 2-3 minutes for oil to warm and completely begin to lubricate the entire engine. But then again I'm probably wrong about that as well. I know that my 2000 Toyota Echo has a light that tells me when the car has sufficiently warmed up.

[–]Shagomir 0 points1 point ago

I rarely let my car idle cold for more than a minute or two, while I scrape the ice off. Good to know I'm treating it correctly.

[–]wooskies 2 points3 points ago

Im not thinking about my trucks engine when I remote start it in the morning 10 minutes before I leave. All I want is a warm ride to work!!!

[–]taqiyya 2 points3 points ago

I always do this because lazy.

[–]lownote187 1 point2 points ago

Had frost on my window this morning. I turned on the de-frost and cracked my windshield. Fuck.

[–]sldyvf 0 points1 point ago

This is actually what you should do when driving in the winter. Let your enginge warm up before hitting the road.

Less gas is used.

[–]pieceofeverything 0 points1 point ago

I had to do that this morning. I live in Texas, south of Houston. Global warming sucks.

[–]ICanFactorThat 0 points1 point ago

[–]unclerummy 0 points1 point ago

Bravo.

[–]Fledgeling 0 points1 point ago

Agreed, it really is a beautiful shot and some very cool photography.

[–]Ioimat 159 points160 points ago

I keep waiting for bob ross to come in and finish it

[–]t_Lancer 30 points31 points ago

Are you sure those trees are happy?

[–]rahmspinat 13 points14 points ago

Do they look unhappy to you? To me, they're each one smile of a conifer.

[–]boss1000 5 points6 points ago

Don't forget the happy little clouds.

[–]horrifiednoodles 80 points81 points ago

I fucking loved Bob Ross. His gentle voice. I didn't even really care about painting. I just watched his show because he made me feel calm. I was in middle school when he died.

My bus driver told me a couple week before that she had purchased a bunch of Bob Ross stuff to learn painting. I'm not sure how she even got the school bus driver job. She was a recovering alcoholic with obvious emotional issues. I guess painting gave her something to take her mind off of avoiding alcohol. For a long time, she seemed genuinely happy.

When Bob Ross died, she was distraught. She'd be driving us along and just break down crying. She had to pull over on at least 3 or 4 occasions the following week. And she started drinking again. We were in a bus accident.

You know that scene in Monster's Ball where Halle Berry's character implores Billy Bob Thornton to make her feel good? I swear, that had to be stolen from my bus driver. The guy whose truck she t-boned was standing on the side of the road, waiting on the cops to get there. We all watched as she sobbed and started disrobing, pleading with this guy to make her feel good. Alcohol is a helluva drug.

Every time I see Bob Ross on television now, I think about my bus driver. I wonder if she's still around. If she got herself cleaned up. And I still get a little hard when I think about seeing her naked chest.

[–]nicolauz 24 points25 points ago

I need another cup of coffee.

[–]Patass 5 points6 points ago

welp, my day's not gonna get any better than this comment.

[–]The_MAZZTer 5 points6 points ago

"horrifiednoodles" sounds like it COULD be a novelty account name and thus the story is all made up.

Right? Right?

[–]KameraadLenin 13 points14 points ago

o ok

[–]yepyep27 1 point2 points ago

He was in Vietnam. I'd become a peaceful painter, too.

[–]flylikeabroomstick 6 points7 points ago

i don't know what to say about this story but i felt compelled to write a response to it

that's... that's all

[–]I_am_the_Werewolf -1 points0 points ago

Fuck, I thought I was having a bad day.

[–]bootnish 1 point2 points ago

-quickly closes laptop-

[–]JonathanWarner 0 points1 point ago

You can't unfeel this.

[–]captainlavender 0 points1 point ago

I fucking loved Bob Ross. His gentle voice. I didn't even really care about painting. I just watched his show because he made me feel calm.

I wonder if you were experiencing ASMR.

[–]mochizuki -1 points0 points ago

I downloaded all 31 seasons and I watch the episodes while I fall asleep. So soothing.

[–]Dem0n5 41 points42 points ago

It is finished but it's our little secret.

[–]pingthepong 19 points20 points ago

[–]Heratiki 0 points1 point ago

So Bob Ross is now Jack Frost? Who woulda thunk it?

[–]neuroghost -1 points0 points ago

It's not like he's doing much else with his life.

Oh.

Right.

[–]Bob_Fucking_Ross 3 points4 points ago

Just look at all the love put into the flowing mountain ranges... love and joy... that's how we make our art.

[–]foxfire 2 points3 points ago

He would probably paint a thick-ass brown line off-centre and make it seem as though he just ruined it, but that line becomes a magnificent white horse. Or tree.

[–]rmxz 1 point2 points ago

[–]Randolpho 8 points9 points ago

Although the name of that subreddit makes sense in a Bob Ross context, in a Reddit context it implies something entirely different.

[–]Doc_Faust 2 points3 points ago

Welp, looks like I'm never visiting any sub but this one ever again.

[–]red_wolf 0 points1 point ago

was going to say the same thing.

[–]qolop 127 points128 points ago

You just missed the chance to post this image with the title "Guess what this is?"

[–]captainlavender 1 point2 points ago

But that wouldn't be in the spirit of r/mildlyinteresting, which can be summed up as: underwhelming.

[–]AndersonRagan 24 points25 points ago

/r/woahdude would love this

[–]thatguy142[S] 10 points11 points ago

I just cross posted it there. Thanks for the suggestion.

[–]redvelveteenrabbit 23 points24 points ago

I can't stop looking at this. It's so whooshy and swishy.

[–]rahmspinat 1 point2 points ago

:D

[–]TuneRaider 10 points11 points ago

I'm willing to bet that similar natural forces that shape ice crystalization & occlusion are at work in the formation of mountains.

❤ fractals.

[–]pururin 0 points1 point ago

I like muffins, but I don't see any on OP's pic.

[–]xd1200f 8 points9 points ago

They kind of look like mountains, but super impossibly shaped mountains. Total mindfuck! I like!

[–]jesuisjonjean 4 points5 points ago

Dead surrealist painters would nod their heads at it, for sure.

[–]oof_baboof 7 points8 points ago

Those are balls

[–]wetmore 0 points1 point ago

They always look like landscape up close.

[–]Shaded21 12 points13 points ago

Shit nature, you pretty.

[–]thatsjustshellfish 18 points19 points ago

This is extremely interesting, and I can't say I'm complaining.

[–]OBEYthesky 2 points3 points ago

It is far too interesting for this subreddit

[–]jzoobz 0 points1 point ago

If you can crosspost it to /r/woahdude, it doesn't belong here.

[–]Dodecadildo 4 points5 points ago

I love seeing the mods of my favorite subs elsewhere on reddit. I don't know why, but it's just cool.

/r/scotch is great (but don't forget to read the rules!)

[–]GDarkwolf 1 point2 points ago

Me too. Or just people who are popular on reddit/people I know. Since I'm a mod in some subs, I wonder if someone feels that way when looking at my comments.

[–]thatguy142[S] 1 point2 points ago

They let us out of our mod cages every once in a while :)

[–]Dodecadildo 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for keeping the scotchdouches at bay!

[–]paper_flames 2 points3 points ago

I find it intriguing the way small patterns like ice crystals, mud cracks, wood grain, etc. can be so similar to patterns you'd see on an aerial photo of an enormous area. Cool picture.

[–]captainlavender 1 point2 points ago

Yes, I tried to mention that on a similar post but it came out kind of rambley and high and was downvoted. It is pretty fascinating that the same patterns of complexity, formed by analogous forces, can be seen across wildly different scales and in wildly different situations/media. Two that spring to mind are rivers that branch the same way as trees (also related to Fibonacci numbers!) and that picture of the nerve cell where all its dendrites make it look almost exactly like a galaxy. When I notice a commonality like this, it makes me wonder what forces caused both instances, and what exactly it is they have in common.

[–]PluralisMajestatis 1 point2 points ago

it kinda does

[–]finnhambly 2 points3 points ago

That's what I thought this picture actually was of a mountain range at first glance (I didn't read the title)

[–]HimmelFahrt 0 points1 point ago

Scale invariance in action?

[–]EliteKill 2 points3 points ago

It seems like /r/mildlyinteresting loves fractals, so I'll just post a link to the NOVA episode about them.

[–]TuneRaider 2 points3 points ago

The infinite within the finite: what's not to like?

Thanks for the link!

[–]KyroDCK 0 points1 point ago

I had trouble seeing it at first on my phone, I felt like Elaine's boss on Seinfeld who couldn't see the rocket and was so happy when he finally did.

[–]Heratiki 0 points1 point ago

I looked at the picture without reading the title (Hover Zoom Chrome) and was immediately thinking, those are some very uniform mountain ranges. I wonder where they are?

[–]TheEnjoyBoy 1 point2 points ago

[–]jesuisjonjean 1 point2 points ago

I think I see Jon Snow and Ygritte walking down there.

[–]cruisingthrulife 0 points1 point ago

From the thumbnail, I thought it was a mountain range

[–]chotheamazing 0 points1 point ago

I think /r/woahdude might want to have a look at this ;)

[–]DoctorMystery 0 points1 point ago

Looks like Skyrim.

[–]StephenFish -1 points0 points ago

You'll know it's cold when the mountains turn blue.

[–]ellamenopee 1 point2 points ago

wow that picture of a mountain range almost looks like a frozen windshield!

[–]MasterofPandas1 0 points1 point ago

Where do you live that your windshield freezes like this? My windshield never gets close to something like this. For reference, I'm from Ohio.

[–]D0RPH 0 points1 point ago

I was just about to say the same thing. Nothing but straight up frost on my windshield. Never cool shit like this, but I'm also from Ohio

[–]ReluctantRedditor275 0 points1 point ago

Really? It's a common (occasionally pretty) annoyance in the Northeast.

[–]HospitalBar 1 point2 points ago

Balls always look like landscape.

[–]karmadogma 0 points1 point ago

Oh Tobias, you blowhard!

[–]KrimsonTide 0 points1 point ago

Dude, just slap some sans serif font on there with a quirky title and band name and you have an A+ indie band album cover!

[–]Starklet 0 points1 point ago

Looks like a volcano erupting.

[–]Insanity_Catalyst 0 points1 point ago

Europa.

[–]mbleslie 0 points1 point ago

Fractals occur in nature on small and large scales.

[–]jammerjoint 0 points1 point ago

Opened the image, though "Cool, what mountain range is that!" Looked at the title....you win this one OP.

[–]johnholmescock 0 points1 point ago

How I love my Ford Quickclear™ windscreen! Nukes mountain ranges in less than a minute!

[–]akaJimothy 0 points1 point ago

How else do you think mountains come to exist?

[–]bgfinkel 0 points1 point ago

You should xpost this in /r/woahdude

[–]spahsoft 0 points1 point ago

not to a geologist.

[–]Guybrush_Threepwood 0 points1 point ago

I didn't read the title before clicking it and thought it was in fact some weird mountain range.

[–]mike_v 0 points1 point ago

I am adding this to my wallpaper folder

[–]totallywar 0 points1 point ago

Fucking Bob Ross. God damit.

[–]WeirdestMudkipz 0 points1 point ago

You made the front page twice! That's mildly interesting.

[–]bluehospitality 1 point2 points ago

New desktop pic. :D

[–]boyled 0 points1 point ago

Bon Iver's next album cover

[–]cycostinkoman 0 points1 point ago

Wow, I saw something very similar in this subreddit recently!

Found it!

[–]whoviansguitar 0 points1 point ago

It kind of looks like "Starry Night" but with mountains and snow

[–]rshortman 0 points1 point ago

It always amazes me when mildly interesting stuff makes it to the front page. I guess that would make it moderately interesting then.

[–]alphaferric 0 points1 point ago

That is because mountainous peaks are formed by the same path of least resistance fractals as your windshield.

[–]Allexan 0 points1 point ago

[–]rahmspinat 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, my first thought was "mountains", but from an impossible angle o.O

I wonder if in my rush every morning I've missed beautiful works of art and just defrosted them away.

[–]Rosetti 0 points1 point ago

This was really fun to look at. [6]

[–]batdorf 0 points1 point ago

wow! upvote! thanks for posting.

[–]Garian1 0 points1 point ago

Looks more like a bunch of waves colliding with each other.

[–]timesoldroman 0 points1 point ago

Plot twist: OP actually took a photo of a mountain range

[–]Chalkdust_Torture 0 points1 point ago

How about showing us the picture of your actual car with this windshield on it. Im not buying it....

[–]basiledes 0 points1 point ago

Looks like Longs Peak in Colorado

[–]FudgeRoDuck 0 points1 point ago

This is my new desktop wallpaper.

[–]GrednForge 0 points1 point ago

I started softly singing "Far over the misty mountains cold..." to myself after seeing this

[–]Theillmill -1 points0 points ago

*i took a picture of a mountain range and thought it looked like a frozen window

[–]methamp 0 points1 point ago

I'm not high enough to see anything cool. :-(

[–]sldyvf 0 points1 point ago

I want someone to etch this in metal for me. This would look super cool as a 1m etchmetalpainting.

[–]Chalkdust_Torture 0 points1 point ago

and still no proof that this is a car windshield

[–]sillymoose13 -1 points0 points ago

Step one: Post to r/earthporn Step two: Troll

[–]brussels4breakfast 0 points1 point ago

This is beautiful. I visualize me using it for wallpaper or a background for my Photoshop antics.

[–]Jonny_Watts 0 points1 point ago

I would hate to be the defroster that removes such a beautiful piece of art

[–]J_c_mooncity 0 points1 point ago

Can I take this for a desktop background? I'm going to do so anyway, I just wanna be polite.

[–]biccy_muncher 0 points1 point ago

Reminds me of Bikanel desert for some reason.

[–]ar3k5u 0 points1 point ago

I feel like, when i was a teenager smokin weed for the first times and saw this, i'd be all "fuck yea let's put this on r/trees or r/woahdude, this is trippy as shit man right?!" But now that i'm older i look at it and i say to myself "Huh. Neat. It really does look like a mountain range." And that's basically it. Maturity kills the childlike wonder. That right there is mildly interesting.

[–]ninja_pie_cutter 0 points1 point ago

first thing i saw was flowers. then i saw what you were talking about. very nice pic.

[–]southernbelle420504 1 point2 points ago

Brb gonna go smoke a bowl and come back to this beautiful picture.
