Original Comic by John Kleckner. The strip is called Hejibits, it's very funny and epic_ghost1237 is an asshole for cropping the this information out of the image above.

At the heart of it, the issue is that Nintendo has to make money in console sales because video games is all they do. They aren't Sony or Microsoft, and they can't lose money on each console sold. So they cut where they can, and when everybody already has a dvd/Bluay player, that's extra money they can save in manufacturing costs on each console.

[–]elzorrodorito 1 point2 points ago

Can't they just do like Microsoft did with the Xbox and sell DVD functionality?

[–]Recon0212 5 points6 points ago

I've seen this comic before, but with different bubbles. Is there a name for it?

[–]Boscodbear 2 points3 points ago

It's by Hejibits but it is used for other suggestions

[–]DoomedCivilian 8 points9 points ago

If you use DVDs, you already have a DVD player. That would not be a selling point. Why would Nintendo spend money on licensing fees for something that would not move consoles?

[–]SirPasta117 0 points1 point ago

Although Blu Rays are a different story.

[–]Subrotow 0 points1 point ago

I don't own a DVD player. I use my PS3 for bluray and dvd. What's the point of cluttering your entertainment center?

[–]caseofthematts 1 point2 points ago

That's the point, though. Everyone who watches DVDs/BluRays already has a machine for it, that wouldn't be a selling feature for the WiiU, so why add production cost to it?

[–]Subrotow 0 points1 point ago

I guess so. Just weird that having a disc drive and not being able to even play a DVD.

[–]Cendeu 0 points1 point ago

I think that's the point. A lot of people who are going to buy a WiiU either have a dvd player or a 360/PS3. Hell, even PS2s play Dvds.

[–]adam3121 12 points13 points ago

Why does it need that? Most people who want to use DVD's already have a way of using them, and so there is no point in having it in the Wii u. Dvd players are only 20 dollars now.

[–]sietai -1 points0 points ago

What about blueray? I don't have a blueray player and the wiiU has a blueray drive.

[–]Osirus1156 5 points6 points ago

The Wii U does not have a Blu-Ray drive, the discs may be 25GB in size but that does not make them Blu-Rays. They are Nintendo's proprietary disc format.

[–]minizanz 1 point2 points ago

actually, they are supposed to be blurays with a special offset, that does not change the disk drive may or may not work, and they may not want to have it work for piracy concerns. i also do not see the point in adding bluray support since the licensing cost and banning HD over component could hurt sales.

[–]turnipX 1 point2 points ago

Havent you heard? People are streaming all their movies now.

[–]sietai 1 point2 points ago

Well I have a public library down the street that has movies for free.

[–]NotSeriousAtAll 2 points3 points ago

Goddamn librarian pirates

[–]headcrash69 0 points1 point ago

It's bluray.

[–]Sonic343 0 points1 point ago

It has BluRay but can't play DVDs? That makes no sense.

[–]minizanz 0 points1 point ago

they are different lasers, but since it reads Wii games and they are are on DVD we know it can read the dvd disks. if you want dvd playback you can do it with the homebru channel now, and you do not have to pay the licensing fees.

[–]Sonic343 0 points1 point ago

Haha it's cool. I don't have a Wii U, so the thought of no Blu Ray playback on a Blu Ray player baffled me.

[–]minizanz 0 points1 point ago

the disk drive is thought to be bluray for WiiU games but with a special offset and maybe a special disk angle. when there is homebru in WiiU mode maybe something will happen with it.

[–]Cendeu 0 points1 point ago

It doesn't. I believe it uses discs similar to bluray discs, but it can't play BluRays. Or DvDs.

[–]livemau5 0 points1 point ago

To be fair, I can't remember the last time I bought a DVD, or even blu ray for that matter. It's fucking 2013, people. Why would you expect Nintendo to support a 16-year-old technology?

[–]caseofthematts 4 points5 points ago

Is there really a point to including that on the Wii U though? Most people already have something that can play DVDs, and if they did include it, that would just make the Wii U a bit more expensive.

[–]Dauss 0 points1 point ago

Someone more technically inclined, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm under the impression the disc drive in the Wii U and original Wii can read a typical DVD, and its just a matter of software?

I know the Japanese Wii console had DVD playback capability, was that a different optical drive or just a software patch?

[–]caseofthematts 0 points1 point ago

If that is the case, that's a little peculiar to not include it, since it's basically already included.

[–]minizanz 1 point2 points ago

it is all in the software, and the licensing is about $20. they also have to add in DRM, dolby licensing and other software crap that would bring the price up. if they just had to add software for blue ray it would be about $50 and add restrictions on analogue out.

you can watch dvds in Wii mode with the homebru channel right now, they seem to not care about homebru and i would assume that as long as you are not running ISOs they would not care.

[–]lolpancakeslol -1 points0 points ago

I too saw these on 4chan.

[–]ColdFalcon 0 points1 point ago

oh dang, the original comic. that was... actually quite surprising.

[–]BobtheDino96 1 point2 points ago

How bout make a new ip?

[–]prboi -1 points0 points ago

It's 2013, if you don't have a device that can play back DVDs then you might as well be Amish.

Not exactly the same image there, but you did your best

[–]Im-Chris 3 points4 points ago

That's....actually much worse.

[–]Kyle772 1 point2 points ago

Well you tried...and that is what counts.

Uhh. I do. What do you use?

[–]absolutsyd 4 points5 points ago

The pirate bay.

[–]livemau5 1 point2 points ago

Internet.

[–]barjam 1 point2 points ago

100% streaming here. I own a few DVD players and a blu-ray but they collect dust. I think I have watched a grand total of 5 movies on blu-ray since I purchased it. I can't even really tell the difference between blu-ray and DVD to be honest and I have reasonably nice 56 inch Samsung tv. Maybe Samsung TVs suck who knows.

[–]gaspah 1 point2 points ago

haven't touched an optical disc of any discription in about 5 years. haven't watched a DVD in probably about 10.

[–]absolutsyd -3 points-2 points ago

Ya, my xbox and ps3 can play dvds. Care to guess how often i use them for that? Pretty much never.

[–]ribena_wrath 0 points1 point ago

Funny because I use them all the time

[–]BrodyApproves -4 points-3 points ago

This is the first unedited, orignal version I've ever seen of this.
