I'm reminded of this quote by Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell.
EDIT: changed to imgur link
[–]JelqMaster777 39 points40 points41 points 7 days ago
Reminded me of this quote from Oscar Wilde.

Anyone have a link to the original without overlayed text?
[–]ghostway 1 point2 points3 points 7 days ago
This seems to be the original painting.
[–]IRELANDJNR 1 point2 points3 points 7 days ago
The Wilde quote is artistic and totally subjective, the Mitchell one is pure truth.
[–]JelqMaster777 32 points33 points34 points 7 days ago
Whenever people throw terms like 'subjective' or 'pure truths' around, it almost always ends up being ironic.
[–]gulljack 3 points4 points5 points 7 days ago
Just because its artistic, doesn't mean it's not true for some.
[–]White_Luigi 3 points4 points5 points 7 days ago
Who are you, may I ask? Obviously, you must have been into space to be able to confirm an astronaut's very subjective quote as truth.
[–]Bherd25 -2 points-1 points0 points 6 days ago
Not sure what everyone is so afraid of. I agree and understand your statement.

[–]rlbond86 20 points21 points22 points 7 days ago
They used to, and I'm pretty sure they were still assholes.
[–]RutherfordBHayes 0 points1 point2 points 6 days ago
Not all of them knew what they were seeing though... If they thought they saw their gods and war heroes, it wouldn't evoke nearly the same feelings, I think.
[–]MyApologiesSir 8 points9 points10 points 7 days ago*
I think the same thing applies to looking in at your own thoughts. I find looking inward, just taking some time to sit and think works in the same way as sitting and looking outward. Doing both is a good way of finding balance and perspective.

Homeless people are model citizens!
[–]FrenchyDude 23 points24 points25 points 7 days ago
When you're homeless, you'll have more luck surviving in a big city with more structures/people to help you, meaning there's a lot of light, meaning you probably won't see a thing in the sky :(.. I just had a flashback of the simpsons in my mind where Lisa tries to shut down the city lights to see the stars, I want to do the same :P
[–]Canucklehead99 4 points5 points6 points 7 days ago
Yea it is called light pollution.
[–]olsmobile 2 points3 points4 points 7 days ago
There aren't any stars in the city, where most homeless people live.

Calvin & Hobbs comic?
to the frontpage of /space!
Actual Space article or news?
Meh.
This subreddit is reminding me more and more of I fucking love Science every day.
[–]alphacentauriAB 8 points9 points10 points 7 days ago
Couldn't agree more... Also, I'm pretty sure this same quote has been here on /r/space many times within the last year.
[–]hivesteel 1 point2 points3 points 6 days ago
Pretty sure? This quote is on my front page every other day ffs
[–]Aculem 8 points9 points10 points 7 days ago*
It's funny how your post is being regarded as controversial, there's absolutely nothing false about what you're saying, and even I feel like I'm beating a dead horse by mentioning that what you speak of is a Reddit-wide problem. People love easy-to-digest content, it gets upvoted the most, it always hits the front page, and the comment section always has that long meaningless debate about what belongs in the subreddit and what doesn't.
I wish the discussion would change a little bit, honestly, I realize that people upvote what they want to, I'm in no place to say that what other people upvote is 'stupid' or not, it's just a matter of fact that vote-by-committee will always yield whatever's the most comfortable for the greatest number of people, and that always means non-challenging material. That's the fundamental core mechanic of how Reddit works. It's not going to change by arguing about it.
I love Reddit, honestly I do, I find out about cool, new, and interesting things every day here, I discover new insights about all my interests as I care to look for them, comment sections are particularly good at dismantling sensationalism and rhetoric, I feel like I'm less wrong about a wide variety of popular topics because of my time here, and there's even a very big counter-culture here that brings awareness to the hive-mind's less productive biases and prejudices.
Reddit's cool in many ways, but lets not pretend that it isn't rigged in favor of the lowest common denominator. Points are worthless here, and until someone creates the next big link aggregation community website that favors more intellectual discussion, we pretty much just got what we got. No use worrying about what it isn't.
Edit: Also, didn't mean to sound condescending to the OP. I love Calvin and Hobbes, but really, who doesn't? It's well, well established that it's a good comic. But being reminded about it every day is kinda mind-numbing, in a way.
[–]deepfeeld 1 point2 points3 points 6 days ago
Its like /r/gaming with no games and more circlejerk nowadays, basically.
[–]jodius 0 points1 point2 points 6 days ago
I've discovered that Reddit is a constant migration from large reddits (which are shit and just reposts of reposts of reposts) to smaller, niche reddits(which are good and tend to be fairly well self managed, until they grow into large reddits). The only thing Reddit as a whole is missing, is David Attenborough narrating the damn thing.
[–]ethraax 1 point2 points3 points 6 days ago
It's like that on pretty much all the subreddits. Take /r/linux for example:
Picture of Tux on an advertisement for winter tires (nothing to do with Linux)
highest-voted "article" on /r/linux for 24 hours
Actual article documenting Linux's new tracing/diagnostic tools
Meh
Pretty much anything that's a picture on a popular subreddit gets upvoted past any real articles. I wish RES was never created, because its really had a terrible impact on what's "popular" here.
[–]oOYokersOo[S] -7 points-6 points-5 points 7 days ago*
I don't understand what you're so angry about. If /r/space isn't producing the content you want then check out /r/nasa, /r/astronomy, /r/cosmology, or any of the other sub reddits in the side bar. You want actual pictures of space? /r/spaceporn is great for that. Or you can just appreciate what's here.
EDIT: Noticed a couple typos.
[–]Jamotron 13 points14 points15 points 7 days ago
I didn't read his post as angry at all. You need to be able to accept criticism of your posts if you're going to post all. Telling someone to go somewhere else is counter productive. Discussion of what content belongs can be good for the sub.
[–]oOYokersOo[S] -9 points-8 points-7 points 7 days ago*
I just interpreted his post as being hostile, especially after I clicked on the link he included. definitely seems like he was implying that it was an immature post. Perhaps I was being too sensitive, but in my defense the internet doesn't house the nicest people. I disagree with you claiming I was being counter productive however. All the subreddits I mentioned seemed much more suited to what he is looking for. In addition, they are all partners with /r/space as well. How is this counter-productive?
[–]Jamotron 5 points6 points7 points 7 days ago
It's counter productive when you tell someone to leave or just appreciate what is here, because you are basically saying you are not allowed to be criticized. Of course his tone may be condescending, but I don't think it's too much or a stretch to expect /r/space to be about space rather than simply expressing the sentiment that space is really cool. I think he made his point with directly attacking you, so I wouldn't take it personally.
And I'd like to point out that I'm not the one down voting you, we should be able discuss these issues in a civil manner without trying to silence anyone we disagree with.
[–]oOYokersOo[S] -6 points-5 points-4 points 7 days ago*
I get where you're coming from but I don't feel like I'm making myself very clear. I'm not implying he isn't allowed to criticize me or my ideas, and to accuse me of that is flat out wrong. I do believe that Solleret criticizing this subreddit and sticking around is in fact, counter-productive. He complained about the subreddit, not my specific post. The more I think about it the more I realize this post was simply the tipping point for him. Now, whatever a person may expect to get out of /r/space I believe is irrelevant. Like I told him, Reddit is a democracy not a dictatorship so if you don't like what /r/space is producing, then simply move along. I just feel like complaining about it is simply unnecessary and will ultimately accomplish nothing.
EDIT: Typo
[–]Jamotron 2 points3 points4 points 7 days ago
Reddit is a democracy not a dictatorship so if you don't like what [2] /r/space is producing, then simply move along.
Don't you see this statement as self contradictory?
[–]Solleret 2 points3 points4 points 7 days ago*
Counterpoint does not equate "Dictatorship." There is absolutely nothing wrong with speaking up as a member about content in a communally curated community.
Those who do not agree with you should be allowed to voice their opinions as well.
And yes: I believe posts like this one are ruining the subreddit, and it's disheartening to see them git the front page while posts with actual content remain largely ignored. I have a right to that opinion.
[–]oOYokersOo[S] -6 points-5 points-4 points 7 days ago
You need to read my posts a little more carefully. Nobody said you didn't have a right to your opinion, I just said that your complaining is counter-productive. I also never said that "speaking up as a member" equates dictatorship. However, you tried speaking for the entire subreddit when you should just keep it to your personal opinions. Let the subreddit speak for itself.
[–]Solleret 1 point2 points3 points 7 days ago*
You also have to realize that there is often a very large gap between users who casually upvote posts, and users who actually participate in community curation/ discussion -- especially on larger subreddit like this one.
This is what makes the discussion oftentimes more interesting than the post itself. If you look around a bit, you'll see it everywhere on reddit: for example, dailymail links with thousands of upvotes, but every single comment is complaining about the fact it's a daily mail link.
This why, in my opinion, the argument that a community "can speak for itself" by upvotes alone is fallacious. People more vested in the subreddit's content should have a say -- but all too often they're shoved off as whiney, elitist, or no fun for trying to bring up the issue of post quality. It's a good way for a subreddit to get stuck in the rut of eternal september.
A subreddit can only "speak for itself" when discussion about its content happens among users who are more vested in it than hitting a vote button.
[–]Solleret -6 points-5 points-4 points 7 days ago
Conversely, you can post this stuff to r/pics or any other image-oriented subreddit. This stuff ahould not be so highly upvoted by the community here, and I think I have the right to point that out... without being "angry," in fact.
[–]oOYokersOo[S] -4 points-3 points-2 points 7 days ago
I understand where you're coming from and no offense but Reddit is a democracy not a dictatorship. What I mean by this is that you don't really have the right to say what should and shouldn't be upvoted here. That's up to the people to decide. And sorry for the name calling...honestly thought you were just trying to be rude. It's not a rare occurrence here on the internet.
[–]jammerjoint -2 points-1 points0 points 7 days ago*
That article is nothing but condescending and childish. What, only people with PhDs are allowed to claim they like science? Ridiculous. Science is not something reserved to for the privileged few. It's a mode of thought, a curiosity for the natural mysteries, a desire to unravel the workings of the world. When you start segregating people into real/false groups, you only hinder progress.
Instead of expressing disgust at ignorance, why not take the time to actually educate them? If you are so high and mighty, why don't you be the one to reach down and share the wealth of knowledge? Stay pretentious on your pedestal, and how is anyone to even become interested in studying science in the first place? If you truly want science to thrive, the simplest idea of it must first be ingrained in the minds of the general populace, and if the occasional picture of a galaxy or NDT does it, than that's all well - it makes it ACCESSIBLE to your fellow human beings. Astronomy and cosmology would not be here if someone was not inspired by the beauty of the stars in the night sky.
[–]jammerjoint 2 points3 points4 points 7 days ago
"Rude twat that just rants."
Which puts the analysis pretty on-point, does it not? Satire is not immune to discourse.
Ah, but there is a difference. The Onion doesn't take itself that seriously. The comment sourcing the article does. I don't know about the author of the article, all I know is that it was brought up in a certain context.
[–]Nieman 2 points3 points4 points 7 days ago
Does anyone have this in a high resolution?

Here's one at a much higher resolution, however it doesn't include the quote. I suppose it wouldn't take long to slap it on there yourself if you want.

People looked at the stars each night for thousands of years. You probably could make an argument for it being one factor in developing culture and civilization in the first place...with all it's byproducts.
[–]DrWalterJenning 2 points3 points4 points 7 days ago
I'm late, but to make this even more appropriate for r/space, here is a mashup of this C&H (sans text) and the famous Hubble deep field image. It has been my desktop wallpaper for a while.

Aint that the truth. Some of my best memories are laying on the dock at the cabin with just my mother looking up at the stars, trying to catch a glipse of a shooting star or a satellite. The rest of the family conversed by the fire and played games...everynight i requested that and my mother delivered with me. To this day i am a astronomy geek and a Carl Sagan admirerer

[–]pipedwget 0 points1 point2 points 7 days ago
Back when I was in high school I would take my dog out for a walk at the park at night. I lived in the suburbs and this was a fairly big open park. I would just go to the middle of the park where it was really dark and just lay in the ground looking up at the stars. I didn't keep track of time but I'd say I did this for 15-30 min, anyways this was so peaceful and relaxing. All I could think of is how beautiful the starry night was and no matter how bad I'd feel this would just be perfect to get back into a good mood.
[–]paperbanjo 0 points1 point2 points 7 days ago
My sophomore year of high school, our science teacher asked us to spend 10 minutes laying on our backs and "studying" the sky and then do the homework assignment. I enjoyed those 10 minutes so much that I started to regularly do this, especially when I was feeling particularly down. I can't do it now.. sky is nothing but light from the city. :( Point is.. I agree.

I always feel like someone may think I'm silly for this but, every time I'm outside at night for whatever reason I take a moment to look up at the stars. Mostly I look for my favorite star Sirius, but just taking a glimpse into the void that is my birth always takes my breathe away. It makes me appreciate my life and the fact that I'm able to see and appreciate it all.
[–]cheifjeff 0 points1 point2 points 7 days ago

I'll never forget the look on my gf's face the first time we stopped in rural vermont off of the highway to look up on a clear night. She's from the city and she's lucky to see the moon with all of the light pollution. Blew her mind.
[–]TimeZarg 0 points1 point2 points 6 days ago
I wish I could see the damn stars from my backyard. Even in a relatively medium-sized town of 275k people, the light pollution obscures the stars. I'd have to drive out past the town boundaries to get a view of the stars.

I'm lucky enough to have a cottage that I've gone to my entire life, as a kid I would look up to see the milky way, satellites, shooting stars, and more recently the ISS flying by. It's so clear up there that with some standard binoculars you can sometimes see the moons orbiting Jupiter, and even cooler, the Andromeda Galaxy. I think anyone who's never seen that, needs to do it at least once in their live. Twenty five years later I still go up their and look at the sky, it doesn't get old.

Looking at the stars is depressing to me :/
I think about how small and insignificant we are in the universe and start thinking what's the point in even living since we're so small that nothing we do really matters in the universe.
[–]Leopod 5 points6 points7 points 7 days ago
I used to think like that too, then one day I realized. Maybe on one of these distant galaxies, someone who also thinks they're small and insignificant, and I get motivated by the though that maybe one day in my lifetime, I will meet this person.
A little food for thought
[–]Visionator 2 points3 points4 points 7 days ago
But this is not necessarily depressing! To quote one of my favorite posts on reddit:
[Existence] doesn't make sense, I agree. But with this comes a level of freedom, if you'd like. Find ways to make the world make sense. If it's all an illusion, then whatever sense you make of the world can be just as plausible as any other ideas. Life can be meaningless. You can live in despair because of this, or you can actively find ways to bring meaning into your life. You can't change the world around you (arguably), but you CAN change yourself (which can then change the world around you to some extent). The possibilities are endless.

[–]bl1nds1ght 1 point2 points3 points 7 days ago
Basically saying that if there's no point, then there's nothing that should stop you from going and doing what you'd like. Stop putting restrictions on what you want and how you want to see the world.
[–]DrGhostly 3 points4 points5 points 7 days ago
But that's what makes it so great! Perhaps nothing we do matters in the universe, but we're an example of what makes it so great, the little things that are all part of something larger, organic beings that perhaps undeservingly gained consciousness to appreciate everything it has to offer. When you take a step back and realize that we're a part of something greater, it makes our problems seem so minute in comparison. I d'unno, that's just me.

What does that even mean, though? By that logic, nothing "matters", so what's the problem?
[–]MalcolmPF 2 points3 points4 points 7 days ago
But on the contrary!
Knowing these things is what makes life worth living. The fact that you and I are capable of even beginning to grasp the fantastic grandeur of the universe around us is astounding. You (and me and everyone) are the product of so much time and matter churning and transforming and becoming.
I know by now it's cliché to say this, since it's been cireclejerked into oblivion, but it remains true: you are the universe, trying to figure itself out. Somehow hydrogen turned into you after billions of years spent space. And now you can look up at the night sky and understand that that is where we all come from.
And yes we are very small in front of it, objectively we are minuscule and insignificant. But we can see it! And we can try to understand it! We are alive, to experience all these things, if only for a short time.
So, when I look up at the sky at night, I don't feel small. I might feel awed, at the scale of it all, at the mysteries that are as yet unsolved. But I always have a smile on my face, because I know that the stars are suns, and I know that there is always more to know.

I read a quote from someone a while back that, despite the fact that our lives are secluded to puny, puny Earth for the moment being, that we and all the organisms on Earth are the only life we know of in the entire universe. Is it not our obligation to continue to live, so that the universe may have life, in the event that we are completely alone?
Would it not be sad if the only life in the entire universe decided to stop because their existence was so small and inconsequential in the grand scheme of things? We are unique; completely so. And that is beautiful. Why not maintain that beauty?
[–]the_injog 0 points1 point2 points 7 days ago
To me, the very fact that we are so small, and so insignificant, is what makes life so wonderful sometimes. Imagine our luck (through the agency of complete random chance) that we get this short span to even look up and at times giggle ridiculously at the massive universe around us, and it's stupefying beauty and senselessness. That we get to experience it, even for a short 70 average some years. With all the time and all the massive space in the universe, and we few billion humans, now and in history, get a few shining (hopefully) years to enjoy this wonderful universe, and the speck of it that we see and understand. Life is sorrow, and it is short but it can be wonderful. And who knows? If we don't destroy ourselves completely...one day we may be out there too, and 70 years may be a blink of an eye to us.

Reddit's very favorite Neil deGrasse Tyson says this (and I'm paraphrasing):
When I look out into space, I feel big! Because we're not just in the Universe, the Universe is in us.

Was anyone else expecting Bill Cosby? No? He was my favorite childhood comic.
[–]Djdp24 1 point2 points3 points 7 days ago
He certainly never appeared on Last Comic Standing...

Comic is another word for comedian.

Even better on acid, all the stars join up, made me think if that's how they got star signs.

Having the most relevant username and a passion for amateur astronomy, I can say this is one of my favorite posts I've ever seen on Reddit. Thank you for this.

I think this is more targeted at religion than it is at space.
[–]oOYokersOo[S] 0 points1 point2 points 7 days ago
All depends on how you interpret it I suppose.
[–]sh0rtgeek 0 points1 point2 points 7 days ago
I would say this is targeted at all people who's lives are "so important" and the fact that there are more important things than me and you. The comic says, and I think it's a better quote honestly(no offense OP) "When you look into infinity, you realize that there are more important things than what people do all day."

How the fuck can you look at the stars from the middle of a big metropolitan area and all it’s light pollution?
That said, country hicks are certainly the last people to ever think for a second about Space and all that…
[–]crazyaky 2 points3 points4 points 7 days ago
Being a simple country hick, I quite disagree. Every day I come home from work, I take a moment to pause and look up at the stars and appreciate the near-infinite beauty and wonder of space, especially on these crisp winter nights. As I stand out in the cold, fumbling for my keys, I imagine that on some distant world an alien is looking back and having the same thoughts.
