If I were a thief, I wouldn't take it out of pity. I might move it to a different pole, though.

[–]Z_zombie123 384 points385 points ago

That's exactly why you're not a thief.

[–]The-Unknown 55 points56 points ago

OP should have taken another photo sitting on the bike...from their home.

[–]jubalm 29 points30 points ago

One problem, OP did not take this photo.

[–]ryumast3r 13 points14 points ago

OP is, in this case, a faggot.

[–]Regnub 15 points16 points ago

Not really, reposting doesn't make you a faggot, unless what your posting was JUST on the front page. But what really makes an OP a faggot is when they do a repost with a title that implies they took the picture. They did not do that in this case

[–]unbraikable 2 points3 points ago

Being OP makes you a faggot though.

[–]Nutcup 8 points9 points ago

Rename thread "Magic Trick" afterwards

[–]Marty096 31 points32 points ago

I'd hide it somewhere, leaving a series of clues starting at the original pole.

[–]kinnaq 63 points64 points ago

"A series of clues, each more fiendish than the-"

"Found it!"

[–]sleeplessone 7 points8 points ago

You already killed The Destroyer of Worlds?!?

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points ago

Also the fact that the owner is there taking a picture of his bike, before he locks it up properly.

[–]mm_kay 7 points8 points ago

I've actually done that before. Saw a bike chained to a parking meter, picked it up and moved it to a meter on the opposite side of the street.

[–]Creative-Overloaded 1 point2 points ago

Did you stay for the video?

[–]havestronaut 9 points10 points ago

My best blooper: hastily lock my U-Lock around my top tube and to one of the public bike lock ups in Philly. This one is right in front of my apartment building, but I usually lock up in a protected basement bike parking area. I just need to run upstairs, so this is faster...

I come back down an hour later, and there is my bike, leaning against the lock up, U-lock in place... and not around my top tube. I missed. Just straight up missed my bike frame completely. Like an absolute moron.

I thank the stars, and Odin, and Ben Franklin's ghost that my bike didn't disappear. A piece of my soul would have disappeared with it.

[–]Baby_Goose 0 points1 point ago

Compton, I assume?

[–]Canadave 1 point2 points ago

I did the opposite once. Had the lock around the front wheel and the frame, but managed not to lock it to the actual bike stand. Thankfully, I was only popping inside a mall for 15 minutes, so it was still there when I got back. And it was a shitty second-hand bike as well, so I wouldn't have been too devastated, but I still felt like an idiot.

[–]guitarman565 19 points20 points ago

Whenever i see something like this, i remove the bike lock but don't move the bike, just to let the owner know that they're an idiot.

[–]Doc-in-a-box 24 points25 points ago

Two questions: how often do you see something like this, and secondly, you did mean that you remove the bike lock from the pole?

[–]Just_Look_Around_You 8 points9 points ago

Houdini up there knows what he said

[–]guitarman565 6 points7 points ago

twice, and yes i did mean that. whoops didn't word that as best i could have.

[–]Tuvw12 0 points1 point ago

I've seen this plenty of times, of course crime is hardly an issue where I live so lots of naive people here

[–]Incongruity7 0 points1 point ago

How would you remove the bike lock itself, wouldn't it still be attached to the bike even if it was attached to an unsecured place?

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

I've seen this a few times, quite often people put the lock round the seat so I just lift the lock off bike just so they realize how dumb they are when they come back to it..

[–]Jonny_Watts 4 points5 points ago

I like breaking into people's houses and leaving evidence that I broke in but not taking anything at all just to fuck with them

[–]idwoof 3 points4 points ago

Way to steal a joke man.

[–]Jonny_Watts 1 point2 points ago

/r/funny is made up of stolen jokes

[–]Weritomexican 1 point2 points ago

Bro, bro, lets go do a B&E...

[–]leahyrain 0 points1 point ago

im not a theif, but because of the ignorance i would take it. I think they are asking me to.

[–]RobertTheSpruce 0 points1 point ago

So, if you were a thief, you would be a shit thief.

[–]pgrily 0 points1 point ago

Meh, that bike isn't worth locking up.

[–]az9 192 points193 points ago

Took me 15secs to realize what's wrong. I'm not very smart.

[–]starwarsyeah 164 points165 points ago

Being a cyclist myself, I immediately criticized the lack of locking the wheels to the frame before I realized what the actual problem was.

[–]pinkpooj 28 points29 points ago

I lock the front wheel and frame to the pole with a u-lock, and then I string a cable through the rails of my precious brooks, rear wheel, and frame again.

[–]dan2737 79 points80 points ago

[–]rusemean 20 points21 points ago

I'm willing to bet that /u/pinkpooj probably has a bike that costs enough to make time for that.

[–]sleeplessone 4 points5 points ago

My current bike, which is in major need of some maintenance was about $700. It was a commuter bike and I used it in place of a car for something like 3 years. I locked it up exactly the same way pinkpooj describes.

[–]Lethalmud 13 points14 points ago

I have this key that goes in a lock on the bike. also my bike looks like shit. I painted it rust colored. never gets stolen.

[–]Creative-Overloaded 0 points1 point ago

Now do that with your car.

[–]feathers77 2 points3 points ago

I go for the rear-wheel and seat tube with a compact U-Lock, pretty nifty!

Sadly don't have a brooks to consider though.

[–]pinkpooj 1 point2 points ago

I got it for Christmas, I'm in love with it!

[–]phqu88 -1 points0 points ago

Me too, post came 2nd! Some people just like to be dicks and steel 1 wheel.

[–]Tillhony 0 points1 point ago

Same here, I thought the fail was not locking it just like that. Then I checked the comments and felt pretty dumb.

[–]wallpaints 5 points6 points ago

Yeah, my first reaction was "What an idiot, he didn't need to use his kickstand..."

[–]rupert_murdaaa 3 points4 points ago

i had to look in comments to figure it out. jesus christ.

[–]pacersbts 0 points1 point ago

Looked in the comments and picture. Hrs wrong? The lock?

[–]Robstaley 2 points3 points ago

Hrs wrong?

was that supposed to be a "what's"?

[–]enough_coffee 81 points82 points ago

reminds me of this bad photoshop i did some time ago...

relevent

[–]Captain_Yossarian 76 points77 points ago

You aren't wrong (about that being bad).

[–]turkletom 8 points9 points ago

This actually happened in my area. Though, I'm not sure if they came for the STOP sign or the bike. Took them both anyway.

[–]Navevan 16 points17 points ago

The funny makes up for the bad 'shop job.

[–]sheetman 24 points25 points ago

David Cameron, Prime Minister of the UK, did this. And yes, it was stolen.

[–]Le_Canadien25 10 points11 points ago

David Cameron will read some reports I am writing this year, so I will make a joke about this in them. Har har har.

[–]XShadowKratosX 18 points19 points ago

UK Prime(RibRoast) Minister David Cameron did this exact thing.

Can't find a picture of the bollard but it was on television when the story happened years ago.

Edit: Here is a reconstruction image.

Edit 2: And here is something else that was apparently fell under the same search criteria (O_0)

[–]FRIENDLY_CANADIAN 6 points7 points ago

The bike has the lock going through the front wheel though, it's still effective.

The second picture is just... confusing?...yeah.

[–]selicate 2 points3 points ago

That only keeps it from rolling. It doesn't stop anyone from picking the whole bike up and walking off with it, or tossing it into the back of a truck.

[–]ryumast3r 2 points3 points ago

gives them more time to remove the lock later, once they get it off the bollard.

[–]R88SHUN 7 points8 points ago

This is a foolproof method if John McCain is the only person around who would want to steal it.

[–]desmunda 28 points29 points ago

I know right! You don't need the kickstand when you're it leaning it against a pole! An outrage this is!

[–]Cornholioh 5 points6 points ago

It's to protect that sweet paint job!

[–]Szoro 14 points15 points ago

What you don't see is that the other side of the pole has a loop for locks

[–]BenCelotil 3 points4 points ago

No, it probably doesn't.

The bollard colour and careful design (concrete poured into the pipe), the pavers, the angled paint pattern indicating a do not park area, the trees in the background, and the lack of kerb and channel at the street all seem very indicative of stations under renovations on either the Ipswich or Beenleigh train lines.

The depth of the car park puts me in mind of Wacol, but the roughness of the surrounds and the large purple sign put me in mind of Gailes and the golf course over the road.

It's probably on the other side of Brisbane somewhere.

I took a picture of something similar at Gailes station a couple of years ago.

[–]Szoro 2 points3 points ago

I'm liking the effort. I wasn't serious in the first place but still, liking that effort

[–]BenCelotil 1 point2 points ago

[–]Sjadow 2 points3 points ago

Even if it does, a thief could get through that lock in a second with a pair of bolt cutters. They could also just pop the quick release on the tires and swipe those. It's a crap bike, but if you're gonna lock it up, might as well put some effort into it.

[–]Szoro 18 points19 points ago

They put the stand down, so I don't think it's going anywhere

[–]pjeff61 2 points3 points ago

You should be a thief.

[–]plucas 14 points15 points ago

Seriously. Everyone knows cable locks are worthless. Need a U-lock up in here.

[–]Samurai_George 11 points12 points ago

Why? I'm serious, I'm new to cycling..

[–]phqu88 13 points14 points ago

You can cut the cable. Need a grinder for a U-Lock.

[–]pween 9 points10 points ago

no you don't i've cut through u locks with bolt cutters before. perhaps they were low quality ones.
note: i am not a thief, i worked for my university over the summer and had to cut the leftover bikes off the racks.

[–]Kamurs 5 points6 points ago

Cheap ones you probably can. But a smart cyclist will invest in something like a kryptonite ulock. Those things will take a lot to bust.

[–]bh3244 2 points3 points ago

NOTHING can stop 48 inch bolt cutters.

[–]ElGoddamnDorado[!] 4 points5 points ago

Nobody looks nonchalant walking around 4 foot bolt cutters, especially not with a bike.

[–]Tiop 5 points6 points ago

Doesn't matter, most people won't do anything to stop them.

[–]Atomic-pi 0 points1 point ago

A friend of mine slid them down his pants to walk around campus and get a bike one night.

[–]herrjoe 0 points1 point ago

According to my dad, his (now my) U-lock can. It seized as he was leaving work, and he couldn't open it, so he got security to try break it. Not a scratch. He phoned me up and I told him to dribble chain lube into the barrel of the lock, and it worked first time.

It is a motorbike lock, though.

[–]Ed-alicious 1 point2 points ago

You don't even necessarily need to cut the cable. If you get a regular U-lock and lock it through the cable lock, it's possible to twist the U-lock around enough that it pulls the cable end bit out of the locking part! I seen this done and done it myself with a bunch of different cable locks when a key snaps off in the lock or the mechanism seizes up or something. I have never seen it done to a very high quality lock though, because they're either probably a lot less likely to fail or else the owner of a very good cable lock is probably more likely to keep it inside and maintain it properly. When using a lock, you need to make sure that there is as little space between the lock and what you're locking it to so that there's not enough room to get a tool in there. Whether that means wrapping your cable multiple times or using one of these, it just makes it a little bit more awkward for thieves to get yo shit...

[–]Yunired 2 points3 points ago

I'm guessing bolt cutters.

[–]skintigh 2 points3 points ago

The cheap ones can be picked by seeing which numbers wiggle more.

[–]iHaveBadIdeas 0 points1 point ago

Or you just pull and twist, the right numbers fall into place.

[–]Vik1ng 2 points3 points ago

Almost all cable locks can easily be cut with a bolt cropper and U-locks require more effort.

But I still have to disagree with that comment. It always depends what your goal is. In this case you got a pretty shitty bike which probably isn't that high on a thieves priority list and the locks purpose is more that somebody can't grab it (although didn't work out that well in this case).

In addition good locks are expensive, you don't want to spend $50-100 on a $200 bike.

[–]Gotterdamerrung 5 points6 points ago

Locks of almost every kind merely provide the illusion of security, but the majority of time that is enough. They act as visual deterrents to less determined thieves, but if someone is bound and determined to get what you have, there is very little you can do to stop them. Slow them down maybe, but not stop completely. But most thieves are only interested in quick, easy scores, so even a cable lock will serve it's purpose in this regard.

I watched a video once that a thief made to demonstrate how easily he could break into a number of cars and steal their belongings. It was a smash and grab job, but he was in a parking lot at night and he literally just moved from one car to the next, smashed the driver's side window, picked up the valuables that were in plain site, and moved on to the next car, and I think over a couple minutes he managed to break into something like 10-15 cars, seemingly without a care in the world. His speed and efficacy and sheer ballsiness was shocking. Dude gave absolutely no fucks. Not sure what his haul was, but he had a bag full of goods when he was finished. No idea if he ever got caught.

I agree that it's important that someone have a particular goal in mind when attempting to secure something like a bike. You're either looking for a visual deterrent, something to slow a potential thief down, or something with as close to real security as you can get.

[–]jumpinjahosafa 2 points3 points ago

Though a good lock could last through a few shitty bikes? Maybe?

[–]ThrustVectoring 2 points3 points ago

You need both if you want to really secure something.

If you want to break a cable lock, you need a cutting tool. If you want to break a U-lock, you need to jam a jack inside and force it open. These tools are completely useless for the other kind of lock.

You go from anyone being able to steal your bike to only those carrying the right tool when you add a cable lock or a U-lock. You go to those carrying both tools when you add both.

[–]Ramt_1 1 point2 points ago

Those are useless too.

I like these combined with my lock of choice.

[–]0nlyRevolutions 0 points1 point ago

Learned this the hard way :( Locked up my bike in a busy area of campus... came back to find bike+lock completely gone. Have a U-Lock now.

[–]pattertw 7 points8 points ago

As a thief, it would stop me

[–]turkletom 7 points8 points ago

You're not a clever man, are you?

[–]AptMoniker 4 points5 points ago

You should leave a note! This is someone who is just really inexperienced and could use a few tips like: get a better lock, learn how to use it, and lock your wheels.

[–]MikeRotchitches 2 points3 points ago

I took this picture!!!

[–]mmmorgs 0 points1 point ago

god damn, now i just feel sorry that you had to see your own oc reposted...

[–]bodaciousbilly 0 points1 point ago

WOOSH

[–]MikeRotchitches 1 point2 points ago

You are correct.

[–]tacos 5 points6 points ago

My ivy league gal has a Master's in Astronomy. She did this with her Vespa every work day for a year, even after someone laughed and pointed it out to her. Didn't understand what was wrong with it.

[–]AptMoniker 1 point2 points ago

Did she lock it in a way that the thief would have to lift it up to get the chain over the pole?

[–]SnowSC2 6 points7 points ago

I would take the screws off the wheels so that if someone lifted them up they would just fall off.

Actually, no, I wouldn't. It'd be funny though...

[–]Triptolemu5 6 points7 points ago

Yea, it'd be extremely funny when they unweight the front tire while riding away and break their neck, collarbone and wrists.

So hilarious.

[–]MarBakwas 2 points3 points ago

What? I laughed.

[–]Triptolemu5 2 points3 points ago

I wonder how funny it'd be to you if it was your bike they did it to.

[–]cgenao6586 2 points3 points ago

This reminds me of that episode of Full House...

[–]shadymcdonalds 2 points3 points ago

I'm surprised I had to scroll down so far to see somebody mention this

[–]austin111 1 point2 points ago

I was about to have to post it myself

[–]JamesKony 2 points3 points ago

I showed my Wife this pic... her response was "Like nobody can just cut this off". My response to pointing out the obvious.

[–]littledingo 2 points3 points ago

Anyone seen a police officer in tighty short shorts running around?

[–]alfalfa1985 0 points1 point ago

It's a woman!

[–]MikeRotchitches 0 points1 point ago

It actually was I saw her put the code in to unlock it right after this

[–]Triptolemu5 2 points3 points ago

You laugh, but there's a surprising number of bike thieves that this would stop, especially since it's a cheap bike in the first place.

It'd probably make for a fun social experiment with some thrift store bikes.

[–]jammasterdj 0 points1 point ago

Saw a kids doing this very thing one day. I kept driving.

[–]green0311 0 points1 point ago

This is what happens when you ride your bike drunk.

[–]Lokrye 0 points1 point ago

bait bike

[–]KillAllLawyers 0 points1 point ago

Dangle, you've done it again.

[–]ellieoranges 1 point2 points ago

Nice kickstand.

[–]jkv811 0 points1 point ago

it's the thought that counts..

[–]Mc_Whiskey 0 points1 point ago

I would just slid the lock off the pole roll the bike like 5 feet away just so the person realizes what they did when they come back

[–][deleted] ago

[–]Hayarotle 0 points1 point ago

Repost... From 11 months ago. You're free.

[–]scsk8r831 -1 points0 points ago

I want to steal it just because I can. I'm not even a thief.

[–]orangesndlimes 0 points1 point ago

The funny thing is the people who would actually steal this probably aren't smart enough to realize they can.

[–]bearodactyl17 0 points1 point ago

The force required to steal this bike is enough force to lift a bike.

This guy doesn't fuck around.

[–]magicbookwerm -1 points0 points ago

I could still steal this pole. Slip it right through the chain that's around it.

[–]chon92 0 points1 point ago

I like to think this is only meant to keep the bike out of the hands of extremely weak thieves who couldn't lift the bike over.

[–]smokes_degrass 0 points1 point ago

I have that exact same bike lock.

It uses a password letter combination to unlock. My word was "Moon". Got it at Toys R Us, where I worked.

One of the first times I used it, I did almost exactly the same thing as this guy.

[–]rawrimadinosaur 1 point2 points ago

Well ya you have to put the cable through the front wheel as well, duh

[–]robbielarson 1 point2 points ago

It took me like 30 seconds to figure out how it wasn't properly locked...

[–]wendigo-go 0 points1 point ago

Maybe the bicycle thieves in this guy's town are just as lazy as the bicycle owners.

[–]inastrangeroom -1 points0 points ago

there's not one thing about this set up that would suggest that this person has a clue as to what they're doing.

[–]bibowski -1 points0 points ago

I would have taken it off the pole to hopefully teach the imbecile a lesson.

[–]SherbetExplosion 0 points1 point ago

I'd want someone to take that bike from me.

[–]Rubes90 1 point2 points ago

It took me a solid 30 seconds to realize what was wrong with how they locked their bike.

[–]pnoyben13 0 points1 point ago

probably a freshman

[–]cantstopreadingit 0 points1 point ago

You did this and took a picture of it to post on the internet.

[–]IlRaptoRIl 0 points1 point ago

I posted this a year ago, but it is rather funny. I'm not even mad that you got more karma, because a year is a long time.

[–]DizzyWobbles 0 points1 point ago

HA!

[–]cliffoxie 0 points1 point ago

My first thought was bait bike. They want you to steal that shit.

[–]Informationator 1 point2 points ago

I'd just lift the bike over the pole and set it right back where it was so they had a moment of clarity. "Ooooooooooh... I'm dumb."

[–]shiftace92 0 points1 point ago

I would be that guy that moves the bike over a few feet!

[–]IXpectU2die 1 point2 points ago

I did this once. In front of a lot of people...

[–]vatothe0 -1 points0 points ago

I feel this is in front of a Walmart for some reason.

[–]JohnnyGinjGinj -1 points0 points ago

Is there any sort of subreddit for miscues like this? ...I would love to see those idiots.

[–]Torikan 1 point2 points ago

Is he not using the kickstand?

[–]oysterfuzz 0 points1 point ago

My ex-gf did this exact same thing to my bike when she borrowed it. Quality bicycle aren't cheap >.<

[–]MicKaKa 1 point2 points ago

I did that near 12 with my new bike, when I came back it was gone :'(

[–]Motoi 1 point2 points ago

FUCK, someone PLEASE actually say what's wrong.

[–]Chimpsanddip 0 points1 point ago

Oh god... I did that once. Now I walk everywhere...

[–]ElPoquitoGrande 0 points1 point ago

The shittiniess of that bike is all the security it needs.

[–]my_toilet_is_haunted 0 points1 point ago

I saw a similar thing a few years ago. I actually grabbed the cable lock and lifted it over the post just to verify that the bike's owner was really that careless.

[–]electromonkey222 -1 points0 points ago

I'd steal it, scrap the bike for parts and keep the lock. Geez that's an ugly fu*king bicycle.

[–]Purple_Herman 0 points1 point ago

I count at least six things wrong with that picture.

[–]Chatonsky 0 points1 point ago

Hey god damit its symbolic.

[–]mang0es 1 point2 points ago

This pic got me right in the feels. That's how I got my first new bike stolen. I know I know --stupid naive me. I feel so bad right now.

[–]ModernRonin 0 points1 point ago

Tobey Maguire has really let himself go...

[–]Gaijin_Monster 0 points1 point ago

I ride my bike around town quite a bit. Sometimes there's just nowhere to lock-down your bike. In a one or two desperate situations i've done this hoping would-be bike thieves would see the lock cable, not look close enough, and keep moving on. That said, I wouldn't have wrapped the cable around something so short.

[–]workadayfilmcritic 0 points1 point ago

Look at that kickstand. Not using that right either.

[–]j0nnyb34r 1 point2 points ago

It took me far too long to work out there was a problem with that arrangement.

I clearly cannot be trusted with a bike of my own.

[–]functiondesign 0 points1 point ago

even properly locked, using this type of lock is just begging for this bike to be stolen.

[–]fallacy-hunter 0 points1 point ago

woops should've looked at the other comments

[–]samclifford 0 points1 point ago

Vertically compromised.

[–]CupICup 0 points1 point ago

Yoinks

[–]Dlax8 1 point2 points ago

You know you live in a bad neighborhood when you think OP was talking about how the wheels weren't locked to the frame as well as frame to post.

[–]Mileskitsune 0 points1 point ago

i have seen someone (albeit they were like 12) try to steal a bike that was chained up to a post like that. after about 5 minutes of trying they failed

[–]Particle_One 0 points1 point ago

Setup Bike. Cops use this particular spell at a coffee shop near campus in my town.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Another good technique is using a U-lock like a padlock for a cheap chain.

[–]minniepen 1 point2 points ago

took me too long to figure this one out...

[–]Cinemaphreak 0 points1 point ago

I think there is something on the other side holding up the lock.

While the base of the pole does appear to be cemented in, it's not entirely clear. You also can't see the shadows from any of the poles, which raises the possibility that OP came upon the bike from this angle and after realizing he/she had been fooled took the pic anyways for some karma.

Some of the these poles have handles for moving them when not being used or when delivery vehicles need to access sidewalks that are otherwise off limits to cars. Notice the curb behind the parked car.

[–]bryan_sensei 0 points1 point ago

I bet that bike belongs to a kid. And that kid is not very bright.

[–]Title_with_Punchline 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, that kickstand isn't even on the ground...they are doing it wrong

[–]CavCon 0 points1 point ago

I would just take the lock off the poll so when they come back they will realize their stupidity.

[–]Motordom 0 points1 point ago

Everyone knows your supposed to lock the wheels too ಠ_ಠ

[–]Cindoboy 0 points1 point ago

this picture was taken ages ago... it was titled "he then proceeded to unchain his bike"

[–]Brickfrigid 0 points1 point ago

Ahh , welcome to the Internet, circa 2001.

[–]twocowgarage 0 points1 point ago

Someone needs to move that bike over two poles.

[–]argosdog 0 points1 point ago

Notice, woman's bike

[–]Darfer 0 points1 point ago

I would never do this sort of thing, only because I know that I am the type of person who would do this sort of thing and I always have to triple check.

[–]redorangeblue 0 points1 point ago

i upvoted this to 1984 the year i was born!

[–]veryredbike 0 points1 point ago

Here's the sad truth: it wouldn't matter if you couldn't lift it over the top. Those locks are useless.

[–]DDraughn 0 points1 point ago

I would pull the chain over the pole, and leave a note that said, 'Thanks for the ride!'

[–]slayingorangejuice 0 points1 point ago

Well, this is clearly a women's bike.

[–]bodaciousbilly 0 points1 point ago

UTD represent!

[–]wanderingace 0 points1 point ago

An ex girlfriend of mine did this with a BORROWED $800 bike. Needless to say, it was stolen and I was guilted into paying for half of it. To top it off; she's a teacher.

[–]mookahmookah 0 points1 point ago

I looked at the lock for a good three minutes thinking the lock looked pretty secure, until I noticed the pole...

[–]Cutiepie16 0 points1 point ago

I showed my sister this and it took her 20 mins to realise what was wrong.

[–]moojah 0 points1 point ago

I have got a feeling this should have been posted in r/trees.

[–]Makin_Dollas_Rain 0 points1 point ago

He probably reached around the pole to lock it too

[–]Isuhydro 0 points1 point ago

I'm not a thief but I have an urge to borrow that bike

[–]Cardinal_Fang 0 points1 point ago

That's a sweet kickstand though!
